View Full Version : Feature request: reset password

Here's a feature request that would help out the MP community a lot and I think be pretty easy to implement: a command line way to use the master password to reset the password for a given nation. One of the banes of the several month long MP games is that one guy can go MIA and hose (or at least seriously disrupt) everyones game. As is, the choice is to either give the sub the master pass or set the nation AI. I'm assuming a command line interface would be pretty easy for the llamaserver to hook into so that poor llamabeast doesn't need to personally manage every time somebody needs to be set AI...I know I always feel guilty having to bug him given the number of games running there.

As an extension of this, it would also be nice if you could reset the password for yourself. So that you could change the password before giving it to a temporary sub, then change it back afterward.
Especially useful when someone subs more than once in the same game.
Same implementation, just allow it using either the master or the current password for the nation.

Oh man, seconded!
Who hasnt been bitten by this one? Anything that can help manage derelict players is a godsend.

for pbem you do not have this issue. Which is one reason that llamaserver is so popular I think.

Well, you don't have that issue *if* people don't password protect their pretender. I tend to sub a decent amount and can say anecdotally that even though I usually don't have trouble getting the password (thankfully) there usually is a password even on the PBEM games. I know I usually have a password on just out of habit, I'm sure I'm not alone.

That is regrettable, as it forces Llamabeast to manually bypass it, and there is absolutely no point to having it.
There will be penalties associated with nations that are pw protected in Kingmaker, as they were cautioned not to do it.
Not sure how much of a population penalty they will get, but it will be something.

Wow, command line password-changing would be amazing. Even more amazing would be command-line setting-to-AI. That, at a stroke, would make a colossal difference and mean there'd be virtually nothing I'd have to intervene with.

I'm not holding my breath for this one. But I can recover pretender passwords, so it isn't much of a problem to me.

How do you recover pretender passwords?

I use a magic word and the dialog tells the password to me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I'll recover passwords for others, if they send me turn files, too. Generally this is only of interest for game admins who need to find subs for players that didn't tell their passes.

Is your magic word: "Hex Editor"?
I cast that spell sometimes too... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

No, I meant that quite literally. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif But if you want a hint, then "SLI" would be another magic word just for you...

I have created a web page to recover passwords from pretender files now. Here it is: http://valhalla.srhost.info/passrecover.php
It only takes pretender files. I can recover passwords from turn files, too, but I'll do it manually. In case you need to do this, contact me.

Thanks for putting that together! I haven't played enough MP to have been hurt by that, but it'll be a great help for PBEM games.
