View Full Version : Can I sub for a teammate in the same game?

I have a teammate in Global War that will be away for maybe a week and we are wondering about several ways we can find a solution for this:
1. Is it possible for me to submit his turns so that we don't have to recruit a new person who will be unfamiliar with the situation?
2. I've heard that there may be some CD key issues when trying to submit two turns from the same computer, so would I need two different CD keys to do this? I suppose I could borrow his CD key when submitting his turn, then switch back to my CD key to play my turn, but I would really prefer not to do that for obvious reasons.
3. Also, does playing via PBEM vs TCP make a difference with respect to this?

I may be wrong but I believe it is one player per game per CD. So basically, no you can't.

Does it make a difference if I am subbing for the host? After all it is possible to play hotseat with the same key. But maybe there's a issue with TCP and PBEM.

I think that via PBEM, you can play as many nations as you want in a single game with one key.
I think you may also be able to do TCP games that way, as long as you are not logged into the server twice at the same time using the same key. I'm not so clear about that though.

I think agri did / is doing my turns in a TCP game atm... (and he is/was my teammate)

I think that llamabeast said it is impossible to get more than 1 turn working from the same cdkey. I guess it is the same for network games.

Too bad they didn't implement it like the protection in the ancient game Stars!--the system sent a machine signature along with the key in a turn file. The hosting program didn't care how many turns were submitted with the same key so long as the signatures were the same. Matching keys & non-matching signatures would trigger the protection, though.

?
I thought the checking system was exactly like Stars! Loren describes?

Yeah, the game actually stores both a registration number and a "compnbr" in the *.2h files. I wanted to quote somebody who told me that playing turns for different nations with the same machine was okay, but it turned out to be atul himself... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
<atul> You can. The check prevention just happens if you play with two different machines with same Dom key code in it.
Which would explain why local games and hotseat games work the way they are done.

Wait, so if I want to play a game against my roommate, we don't have to hotseat, we can run a network game with simultaneous turns even though I only own one copy of the game?? :O
Or are we dancing in circles so much on this that I'm losing track of where the yes's and no's are pointed? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

You could always play two hotseat games on two computers.

That would mean different machine signatures. I would assume that would trigger the protection.

Does it mean then that me and my brother could both join an MP game and play it from the same computer with the same CD key?

yes, exactly. you'd best use different DOM3_CONF / DOM3_SAVE directories then, though. search for that word for more info. otherwise you'll either have to juggle with the savegames through renaming, or you need to always enter both passwords.
