I played the origional SP for years and loved it. Whenever I used mortars in that version they seemed relatively useless for the points spent. I bought this version in 2006 and really enjoyed it, but lost the CD late that year when my PC died. I have ordered a new game today so I returning to one of my all time favorites! There have been a few patches since I played last, so before I start my new campaigns, I wanted to ask if I should consider using this weapons class that I have mostly ignored.
Thanks for any advice.

Mortars are great for:
1)Causing casaulties to unprotected infantry (say a large bunch of footsoldiers moving fast towards your position in an open field), thus disrupting/stopping attacks,
2)causing tons of suppression
3)better for DANGER CLOSE fire missions than 155mm arty
4)cheap, little bucks for a big bang
5)great smoke layers.

I like them for suppression and smoke missions. When in use by a human opponent who knows how to use them, they can really lay waste to your plans.(been there done that) I must admit some years back mortars may have been not so effective, but that's been addressed. IMHO.
