Fire Storm? Flaming Arrows? Thunder Strike? Magma Eruption? Shadow Blast? I'm curious which spells people consider their favorites on the battlefield and stories of how they have used them to devastating effect. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Also, I've been wonder which spell is better: Thunder Strike or Magma Eruption. I suppose it's somewhat situation dependent but they seem to be really effect for their class. At least they seem a bit stronger than Falling Fire / Falling Frost, but I suppose it depends on which mages your nation has.

I'm a thunderstrike guy just because it is the kindest hurter and the spell effect looks manly as far as dom3 effects go. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

is thunderstrike stronger? I'm not that fond of flaming arrows or any kind of gem costing spell since when I need them the most the gems are not there. (yes my own fault probably but still)

I'm still wondering what to do with any non A3 mages so far except for E3 which is blade wind in my book.

OW and astrals paralyze and soul slay.

but other mages I can hardly use http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

call me old fashioned but I can't resist a blade wind. Not always the most effective on the battlefield but fairly easy to research and cast.

well... my most recent big time battlefield adventure.

Life After Death + (Heat From Hell * Curse of Stones * Rigor Mortis)

gem expensive? yes. but it can turn a lopsided encounter into a major upset.

my particular battle ended with ~15 Hydras and a King of Elemental Fire fleeing from three, and ONLY three, soulless.

I'm only new but find Divine Bless works a treat http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I can never resist Cloud of Death. It's the best part of C'tis. Lots of collateral damage if your precision isn't good enough, but it's the most entertaining way I know of to wipe out 300 barbarians.

I enjoy Magma Eruption and Banefire, but I haven't played around much with the water magics. Falling Frost and Acid Storm look good on paper and I'll probably try them out some time.

Raise Skeleton ought not to be overlooked. Nor should Rain of Stones, the great magekiller.

Falling frost is very good. When you can spam it on the battlefield, even better. When you are doing it against C'tis... oh, joy.

My favorite to watch though, I think, is Fire Storm vs. Ermor undead chaff. Lots of nice fiery puffs as the undead burn up.

Sometimes you need a bigger gun - sometimes you need Gift from Heavens.

Other then that, I like Soul Vortex, because it makes the Wraith Lord a small, nice army-killer.

Thunder strike is real good for two reasons I think : low research cost, and the boost all air mages get to precision. The only flaw is the high fatigue. For long battles I tend to think FFs are better, even if you never really know were it will land.(fire mage are usually old, and this impacts greatly precision)
The best casters not using gems are for me dragon anathemants : FF spamming with no risk to kill your troops.

Coolest would be Charm, Enslave Mind and Apostasy. Nothing quite like turning the enemy against himself. Also nice to have more troops at the end of the battle than at the start.

If you define favorite as most used, then it is the bread and butter Body Ethereal and Luck.

The problem with Thunder Strike is the small area of effect. It's great against thugs (if they're not immune) or small groups of elite troops, but lousy against hordes.

Until you get to the high-end gem using spells, Air is difficult to use against large numbers of chaff.

There's very little lightning-immune chaff, though, and you need Air to protect against Air.

Granted, but you can't kill chaff with lightning. Or, at least, you can't kill enough of them. 50 fatigue from a 3A mage for 3 targets? It's hard to get enough 3A mages to kill even a few hundred troops that way.

Wrathful Skies or Shimmering Fields work, but need high end Air mages.
Wrathful Skies needs a Storm and either a SC caster (preferably AQ) or a willingness to sacrifice your own chaff to give it time to work, which isn't very useful in a war of attrition.

I was just playing Man fighting off Ermor's hordes of Long dead horse and I was desperate for anything that could actually do area damage.

I love smite in early game.

Then, mind burn and soul slay.

Then, charm and enslave.

But of course, 90% of the battlefield spells have their uses. Its all situational.

I do like my fireballs in the early game. Generally they kill a whole square and fatigue everyone nearby, and they are very easy to research and cast.

My most used spell is probably Falling Fire. Always handy and easy to boost to, even with only moderate mages.

Paralyze is another favorite for the same reason.

Control Undead is a personal fav too, just because its so much fun to steal someone else's Tartarians.

Frozen heart is nice, especially against all those Marble Armor wearing thugs. Best part is the W1 makes it a snap to cast.

My favorite battlefield spell would be acid bolt. Ask DonCorazon what a few D9 blessed Celestial masters spamming acid bolt does to a E9 Cyclops and his accompanying Abyysian troops. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Its ugly, let me tell you.

That was my first game ever. Whoever won?

The host disapeared and the game hung.
