View Full Version : New MA game (PBEM) -- Tigerstripes (in progress)

anticipatient
June 5th, 2008, 06:44 PM
New MA game, settings & map totally negotiable (you all seem pretty easy-going), any experience level. Myself, I have played many hours of single player, but I know that's never quite like multi-player. So newbies are cool, but I have absolutely no problem with playing with very experienced players as well.

Feel free to nudge me however you deem necessary, since I haven't hosted/admin'd a game before.

Settings decided thus far:
Inde strength: 7
No score graphs (although I think they're fun:))

Player: nation roster: 10 players;
Anticipatient: Jotunheim;
DryaUnda: Ulm;
Secretperson: T'ien Ch'i;
veto: R'Lyeh;
don_Pablo: Eriu;
Staneth: Arcosephale;
alhorro: Mictian;
Executor: C'tis;
ThatGuyBob: Agartha;
Sleet: Machaka;
chrispedersen: Ashdod

MP games are sometimes played via PBEM. They are also played via a network server. I prefer a network server (sorry llama), but PBEM games are also quite viable. Llamabeast's PBEM server is very nice.

anticipatient
June 6th, 2008, 07:26 AM
Lingchih, I played a couple games set up from irc.net #dominions -- is that where you go for matchmaking and whatnot, or do you know enough people who play that you don't have to?

I am up for an 8 player game of your modified Paraganos map. Should we play with CBM?

llamabeast
June 6th, 2008, 07:32 AM
I think Lingchih just means network games organised here. Games here are either network or PBEM games. Both have advantages.

When you are ready to have people send pretenders in let me know what you want the game called, and I will set it up.

June 7th, 2008, 08:45 AM
may be random?)

anticipatient
June 7th, 2008, 06:47 PM
I'm going to work on a random map. I like cradle of dominions a lot, but to be honest, I'm concerned that R'yleh will have a sizable advantage on that map. I am a new player, but it seems to be a very powerful nation, and to be the only unchallenged underwater nation at the same time, particularly on this map . . . I'd like to hear what more experienced players have to say.

Having said that, if nobody really cares, I really do like cradle of dominions, so we could just play that anyway. Life doesn't have to be fair, and neither do games http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

You guys want to play with CBM?

llamabeast
June 7th, 2008, 08:28 PM
I would also be inclined to be concerned about R'lyeh on Cradle. They would have a lot of space. Generally there should be slightly fewer water provinces per water race than there are land provinces per land race, since it's easier for water races to expand to land than vice versa.

I found an old version of Cradle that someone made for the Chinchilla game, with hand-placed starting positions for 12 players. So I used that. One of the starting positions will be unoccupied, but they should be far more evenly spread than they would be if Dominions had placed them.

I am in Chicago from Friday till Sunday.

I am not expecting to delay the game. My positions in all games will be capably handled by Mark Montero.

I am going to down the servers Thursday night at midnight, to give them a fresh reboot, and to install some remote management software.

That way if something happens while I'm away, there will be at least the possibility of resolving the problem remotely.

And what do you know! Lizard DOES taste like chicken.

Chickens, er lizards are welcome to send more, um, emissaries.

Of course, Ashdod hews to the beliefs of our forefathers. Eating our enemies, we gain their strengths. We shall have to think about this. WE do not want to taste like chicken.

chrispedersen
June 26th, 2008, 10:31 AM
Hmm I should have eaten that chicken when I had the chance... Instead chickens have popped up all over. And tho I squish a bunch.. still more chickens. Giants down to 3 provinces!

As for it being smart, dear chicken... the mistake was not in eating the emissary. It was being peaceable and not eating the rest of your 'tastes like chickens' when I had the opportunity.

So the giants were attacked with surprise by the cowardly chickens, and with the aid of R'yalla. But I don't think I'm going to have the time to develop a taste for sushi. Two small, tiny cowardly races SHOULD be able to kill one.

Although Ryalla has made a mistake here - he has swapped a smaller, peaceable neighbor for a larger more agressive one.

C'tis controls almost the entire southern continent unopposed. Aid appreciated - but definitely beware. Ctis will come with out warning.

Also, if anyone has sitings of Ryallian armies, the intelligence would be appreciated.

I think I must've done it on accident . . . I don't know how, though, 'cause it gives you a warning when you do that, right? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif/

Despite the bad luck (which was mostly my fault), I was having lots of fun. I wish the best of luck to my neighbors! In particular, I hope Arcosephale gets a bit of free real estate from the deal. Or better yet, maybe Ashdod can find a second life.

Could it be anything to do with being the admin of the game maybe..?
Well, anyway look forward to another game with you.

Ctis needs death gems, since he is consuming them rapidly in his fight against me.

Good gentles, there is no reason to aid his plans - let him bleed out on those giantish shores. Every ctissian I kill, every horde is one fewer that you will have to face.

He has brought 19 marshmasters - and better - against me. Mages that could have been home researching. Let them bleed out good gentles....

You seem to have a tendency of exadurating things.
There are plenty mages researching back home don't you worry about me.
And so far I'm not the one whose bleeding.
And if you need to know, those gems aren't intended for battles, I have plenty of those on my mages, but for forging thus the forge hammer I also need.

Once again I ask if someone needs earth, fire or water gems in return for death gems, PM me, and also the forge hammer.

Our scouts were totally confused with this battle. The Ashgod thug did not troubled himself with equipping a Robe of Shadows, and was disgracefully slaughtered by longdead meatshield, otherwise he was to win the battle.

As for our trade proposal, it's your last opportunity to make a profitable transaction at this month, otherwise we have to empower our mages. We are surprised that nobody has been interested in selling such common items as earth boots or skull staffs yet.

Imho the only thing we can do — is asking llama to debug the crash and find out it's reason. Otherwise even if we manage to get a new turn without the crash after numerous attempts, we may face the same problem a turn later.

Hi guys,

Sorry it's taken me a little while to look at this.

Right, the error is:

--
NÃ¥got gick fel!
dnf: bg area 0
NÃ¥got gick fel!
dnf: bg area 0
--

Now, I _think_ this bug will be fixed in the next patch. From the progress page:

12th october
* Game could crash due to too many large units on the battlefield, fixed.

I'll post in the beta forum to check that this is a fix for this bug.

Now, assuming it is, you have the choice of waiting for the next patch, or trying to go further back in time by rollbacks, and hoping it'll be avoided next time. I think it is probably caused by a lack of space on the battlefield, in some huge battle. I may be wrong though.

I may forget to check this thread, so PM me if you want me to do anything more.

Executor
October 26th, 2008, 07:55 PM
Sooo, this is probably caused by the war between me and Don Pablo then.

So who's up for a not 1, not 2 but 3 turn rollback???
It may be awhile till the next patch, so a rollback may be more reasonable, but than again that wouldn't be fair with me and Eriu seeing that both of us know what the other one's going to do and how to fight the SC (especially mine). This could really upset the balance of war.

I'm good either way, got some other games going on and seeing that Eriu has the upper hand in this war a rollback would suit me better, but I wouldn't want to play like that, and plus I've got something special planned.

alhorro
October 26th, 2008, 08:33 PM
Thank you Llama.
Btw, I have one squad of ~40 size 4-6 creatures, this squad has been attacked by AI during all the stale turns, and it's been showing strange behaviour every time — only 6 units were doing something in the battle, and the rest just stayed on their position mixed with PD till the end of battle, despite they all are flyers. It's not likely that 40 mid-sized units eq "many large units", but... what if it's the reason?

Anyway, I'd suggest everyone to divide large creatures in the army setup and try hosting (without wasting our time on any other orders). If it goes fine, we can rollback 1-2 turns and try again (with separated units), if not — rollback deeper.

Shouldn't we call it a drawn game since it keeps crashing with no reason, I think it's very obvious that we aren't gonna finish it anyway.
