I think that the time for a new game has come)

The settings are the following:
- Map is Alexander (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=d3smm&Number=573514&page=0 &view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) by PashaDawg with predefined starting locations. See attachment.
- Era: Middle
- Graphs on, sites 50%, renaming on, HoF 15, indies 6
- Host is Llamaserver. Please read the FAQ (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=531116) if you don't know how to use it
- Hosting schedule: 24 hours per turn for first 17 turns, 48 hours starting from turn 18.
- Mods: Twan's Mist of Deception replacement mod (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=d3smm&Number=596055&page=0 &view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1), Worthy Heroes 1.8 (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=560854&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)
- Players: 14-17.

Currently playing:

Ashgod - chrispedersen (replaced by Dimaz)
Abysia - Dragar (defeated)

Mictlan - danbo
R'lyeh - AdmiralZhao
Ermor - BigDisAwesome (AI)
Oceania - seej (AI)
Agartha - Revolution (AI)
Vanheim - don_Pablo (defeated)
T'ien Ch'i - veto (defeated)

Game page at llamaserver (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=Stasis)

Here's the list of exploits I would not like to see in this game:
- "Cast long-lasting battlefield enchantment and retreat". Please, don't script your mage who casts a battlefield enchantment to leave earlier that round 6 or 5 (for returning)
- "Overfilling enemy lab". Don't send magic items to your enemy to make him lose his own items.
- Priests with Crystal Matrix casting several times in one turn.
- any other severe bugs found in the process of the game
- Your suggestions?

Yikes - why do people like playing with graphs off? It just means more MicroManagement for every player.

And not only that, but it always benefits the strongest player most.

I'm really impressed with the speed this game filled up. It seems like the time for it has come indeed)
Three more issues:
1) I don't mind having graphs on. If people like it, no problem
2) We have 2 slots open and definitely need some water nation because there're many seas on the map. Maybe another map? Any suggestions?
3) There's a map issue that should be fixed - provinces with less than 3 neighbours should be marked with "nostart". Pasha promised to do that but I'm not sure if he has time now. We may do this by ourselves though.

Sounds like a job for a perl script!

If you have time though, it would probably be preferable to hand-place the start positions. That is a bit time-consuming though.

ano
June 11th, 2008, 07:28 AM
Well, maybe I'll do so when I have time. It's really better with the exception of easing heavy early rushes.
I don't know perl) Btw, if someone who knows it wrote a script for .map file processing, it would be great. Any language will be fine but I'm too busy and lazy to do it)

Well, I have largely written a program, but I just realised it doesn't differentiate between water and land provinces (I assume you meant less than three neighbours of the same land/sea type). By the way, do you really mean less than three, or "three or less"?

ano
June 11th, 2008, 12:02 PM
Cool that you did it. I meant "two or less" but "three or less" will also be fine.
As for water provinces, I think, it's also doable, isn't it?

JimMorrison
June 11th, 2008, 02:20 PM
If the script doesn't want to handle the water properly because of land connects, that much can be edited manually in just a few minutes. Yes, I am volunteering myself, if that's what you're going to ask. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

ano
June 11th, 2008, 02:43 PM
Yes, this can be done manually, but llama's script will be a very useful tool once he finishes it. For now, yes, we may even assign starting provinces manually.

ano
June 11th, 2008, 08:22 PM
Tried to specify starting locations but ran into the following problem:
Is it possible to specify a set of possible starting locations from which starting location for specific nation will be chosen?
#specstart should have 2 params to work: nation number and province number. What should I do if I don't want to link starting location to specific nation?
If it is possible in no way other than marking each province out of this set with #nostart, I really don't like it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

JimMorrison
June 11th, 2008, 08:36 PM
Well, it's likely a much more complicated script, but it would be interesting if it could be automated in such a way as to make fair and balanced (static) start positions. So, it would eliminate all territories with 3 or less connections, then determine loosely (based on a specified number of nations) the average spacing to make them all roughly equidistant, and especially to insure that all capitals are at least 3 provinces from eachother. I am sure this is far too complicated for anyone to just sit down for 15 minutes and bang out, so it's just wishful thinking, but it sounds neat. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif I mean once it was doing all that, it could probably even go down the list based on number of connections, so it would look at say, provinces with 7 neighbors, and see how many could work together as capitals, and then fill the rest of the list with 6 neighbor spots if possible.

Forgive my blathering, I am much better at speaking and typing, than programming. Well, I'm much better at just everything other than programming..... but I don't hold it against myself.

ano
June 12th, 2008, 08:46 PM
So, I've made changes to the map and specified the starting provinces. Obviously, some of them are better and some are worse but I spent more than an hour trying to make everyone happy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Here're the starting provinces numbers:
5, 121, 64, 262, 264, 18, 90, 130, 196, 243, 23, 241, 238, 151, 62, 53, 123.

And my pretender is in finally, my apologies for dragging my feet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

ano
June 15th, 2008, 04:28 PM
Yes, the final version of the map is attached to the first post. The only difference form original Alexander map (no libraries) is in the predefined stating locations I've listed above.

On other matters:

I am in Chicago from Friday till Sunday.

I am not expecting to delay the game. My positions in all games will be capably handled by Mark Montero.

I am going to down the servers Thursday night at midnight, to give them a fresh reboot, and to install some remote management software.

That way if something happens while I'm away, there will be at least the possibility of resolving the problem remotely.

Best to all

First, sadly second turn will be paused until Monday due to johnarryn's major request
Second, chris, I really don't know anything about your problem. File Alexander.tga (not Alexandre.tga) should be attached to the first post (it seems to work fine for everybody). As for corrupted icons I know nothing at all. Must be a global problem.

ano
June 19th, 2008, 05:05 AM
You may try to download the map from the discussion thread (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=d3smm&Number=573514&page=0 &view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) but I'm pretty sure that .tga files are identical

llamabeast
June 19th, 2008, 06:13 AM
Chris, the attachment on the first post is a RAR file, which is like a zip file. If you can't open it you need to download a program called winrar from here:

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar371.exe

You should then be able to open the rar file, and find that it contains Alexander.tga, which you should put in your dominions3/maps folder.

ano
June 19th, 2008, 08:06 AM
llamabeast
I don't think that was the problem because Chris says he "extracted the file into map folder".

llamabeast
June 19th, 2008, 08:12 AM
Well if he hasn't got a tga file he must have had an issue somewhere along those lines.

chris - what file do you have?

chrispedersen
June 19th, 2008, 11:32 AM
Actually, this has happened two times.

What happens if I download the mod file before the map file, the game will not work.

aka - when I run it, I can't see neighbors, 3 icons of recruitable troops don't show up, etc.

However, if I then just download the mod file again, everything works fine.

AdmiralZhao

So far, the mage-chefs of Ryleh have sampled the primitive brain-meats of 3 nations. Shinuyama's shamblers were a bland and flavorless meal, while Tien Chi's archers and calvary had a bit more spice. Our favorite has been the skin shifters of Midgard. They start out as a rugged, hearty fare, which quickly changes into a wild and zestful second course. With their constant regeneration, they are meal enough for even the hungriest star-spawn. Sadly, the period of independent expansion is coming to and end, and we can no longer easily arrange such meetings between our chefs and the wandering food-herds of the other nations. If you have any particularly tasteful neighbors, let us know and will split them with you.

Hmm, and on a sadder note, Llamaserver is rejecting my turn. Something about Llamaserver overstepping its free daily hosting limits.

It seems that there is some misunderstanding between Ulm and Ashdod. Has been informed that Ashdod is sending away messages accusing Ulm of "violating a NAP, prior to its expiration".

But below is previous message from Asdod to Ulm which states conditions of breaking a NAP:
_______________________________
I regret to inform you ...

From: chrispedersen

That as of this turn(13) my ally requires me to nullify my nap with you.

I personally think it will all be over by the time the nap expires (hostilities could commence on 17), but I am honor bound to say something.

I propose to revisit the matter with you, then.

Best wishes.

So, on turn 18 Ulm attacked some Ashdod province by a single scout and this is not NAP violation in anyway.

JimMorrison

The time for pomp and ceremony is over. The hillsides of the once expansive Bandar empire glow from the fires of Ulmish armies, and the unreasonable invasion horde from Mictlan.

Neighbors, friends, and enemies of Mictlan, know this - their empire has launched an all-out offensive against us, the army is not only massive, but is supported by what would seem to be the vast bulk of Mictlan's mage-priests.

After having our primary defenses rudely crushed by Ulm, Mictlan has nearly effortlessly established a beachhead, facing only reinforcements. The only way all of you can avoid being the next target for annexation, is to strike at the soft underbelly. Take a bite from the beast, or declare him your master - time is short.

Down to my last province, some joy at last in a successful defence finally killing the machaka pretender SC who has singlehandedly been killing armies that were otherwise handling the regular Machakan armies comfortably

Hopefully I can hold out and frustrate the invadres a little longer, and hope someone can take advantage of machaka's misofrtune before the god returns and is rearmed - albeit with a couple of afflictions

Reports from the ravaged lands in Bandar Log seem to depict several dozen frightened and bloodied Mictlan troops fleeing from the Bandar capital.

A spokesman for the Bandar, the venerable White One Mikhael Blackson would only provide this short quote to reporters, "When all else fails, ethereal Markatas will terrify even the stoutest of men.".

It is unknown at the present time what this statement actually means, but it is believed to elude to a secret doomsday weapon that the Bandar have developed far beneath their mountain home.

While it may be true that some wondered if the designation "C4" emblazoned on the new uniforms were simply a military distinction - the results were reality defying.

Hey folks. Due to some personal matters, I am forced to withdraw from all the games I am currently playing. I've chosen to set myself to AI (which I normally hate to do) rather than look for a substitute because I don't want to delay the game any longer than I already have. Thank you for your understanding.

NO! Now all Pythium's neighbors get a bunch of free provinces.

You seem to be in a decent spot on the score graphs. Is there anyway we could try to find a sub? It's never fun when 1-2 nations get a huge advantage because someone went AI.

Look,

No offense, but I had an neutrality pact with john that hemmed me in restricting the territories I could take. The return for that was an ally.

Its 27 turns into the game. I don't want another player I don't know, and who doesn't know the agreements taking over.

Let Pythium fall to its neighbors - anyone that is concerned about Ashdod gaining a third of pythium should check the charts. Ryllah and Ulm are way ahead of that already.

Subbing is a normal practice so you may accept it as a luck\unluck event. Also, if a player with big empire goes AI, it is a matter of much bigger imbalance.

As the last few Markatas scampered into the trees, a Rishi could be heard saying "I told you we should have NAPed Ulm, our Tigers would have gone to good use against Mictlan".

Man, I read the forums almost constantly - at least 6-7 times a day, and more at night. There was no way to make a request for a delay. There was no way to find out Pythium was being subbed. The boards were down for maintenance! !

Ano, I think if there is a significant change to the game - like a change of player, a nation being set to ai, a change in victory conditions, etc. - that the game should be delayed until everyone knows it.

I'd like to propose that as a standard anyway.

Well then, greetings again, denizens of stasis!

My escape from the doomed fortress of Bandar Log was well planned, and brought me a period of good health, and self reflection! In the meantime, I found this nation of oddly superstitious reptiles. Living among them, I studied their culture, until the day that I could convince them that I was the subject of an ancient prophecy.

Through C'tissian worship, I grow stronger daily. My muscles bulge and my eyes blaze with an ancient fury. I've not much felt myself since ascending to this new position of power. It is as if..... someone were urging me to do things that I would not have seen to be obvious choices, on my own. My heart hardens, and my mind focuses. The great war of the end days is upon us, and I have come to end it.

Why even just today, my waiter brought me the wrong meal, and I strangled him in front of everyone. Soon, all in Stasis will learn to fear me, just as the employees of Chili's fear me. O.O

Something strange is happening in this game.
First I was betrayed by Jotunheim now the situation is nearly the same with Oceania. We had peace with these water inhabitans and according to our treaty were sending them 400 gold per turn for the possibility to control some land provinces they took form us before. I am not sure if it was a fair deal because those provinces had about 100 unrest but that is not the issue...
The issue is that we had a NAP with Oceania and we were sending him gold each turn and now we are heavily attacked without any warning. I am a new person to this forums but I'd like to ask if it is considered fair play here? I just don't get it.

I generally assume that it's under the honor system unless the host specifically says at the start of the game that NAPs and other agreements between players are not to be broken. You are quite unlucky...over many games I have yet to have someone break a NAP against me. The best you can do is to let everyone know of R'lyehs backstabbery and encourage those who currently have NAPs with R'lyeh that not only is he not to be trusted, but that since he has no respect for NAPs they should not respect the NAPs either and should go ahead and attack him and engage him in a 2 or 3 front war while he is fighting you.

More often than not though when someone breaks a NAP it is just a misunderstanding and the person who broke the NAP thought that they were within their rights. Most people do try to protect their reputation.

I'd like to introduce a new term into Dominions Lexicon.
Its based on reverse dutch auctions, and known in american parlance as either reverse dutch or reverse chinese. However, to keep jingoism out of it, I'd like to just call it a reverse nap.

Here is the definition:

Both sides enter into a NAP with an agreed upon term, such as NAP +3 - which would normally be that there is peace for three turns AFTER the turn of notification.

So, a Reverse NAP is this:

The side that is *notified* may take any actions it deems fit, immediately, upon notification.

The side deciding to end the NAP, must wait the agreed upon time.

This makes it a disadvantage to break the NAP, and hence a little bit stronger than a traditional NAP.

Whatdya think?

If it's 64 bit Linux apparently there's a 3.20b patch available to solve an issue.

I doubt he has 3.20 installed at all. Still no answer to this.

I've corresponded with seej. He doesn't have 3.20 installed. He'll be upgrading and sending in more turns.

Yay. Seems like every game that I make it through the initial expansion phase in I just get tagteamed. Well have fun fighting off Ulm after he comes for you next Machaka.

You should all be aware that on top of his current massive gem income, Ano is clamming. With his province lead, income, and killer SC's...My fate is sealed and all of yours will be as well if you do not band together and strike soon.

Also, well fought war Ano. Your attention to detail with your scripting and careful army management continues to impress me when we end up fighting.

I made some mistakes and suffered some major loses in this war but it was your choice - I didn't want it indeed.

Theres nothing wrong with the position, but with the alliance between ulm and shinuyama I have no interest in continuing the game.

I have not put it on AI- so you can find someone to take my place if you wish, but I really think it pointless.

It looks like I need to be set to AI. Here in Ohio we got 60-70 mph gusts of winds yesterday caused by hurricane Ike. I'm without power at home, and they're saying that it could be up to a week until they get power fully restored. So instead of delaying the rest of you for a week to wait on me, just set me AI. I'm getting tagteamed by Ulm and Machaka anyway and am on my way out, so it really doesn't matter much anyway.

Best of luck to everyone.

ano
September 15th, 2008, 04:27 PM
Hm, taking on account problems with llamaserver and Ike hurricane (many people have been influenced by it) I think that it is maybe better to wait a bit for you to submit your turn when you can. Not sure about what other players think though.

I doubt its a serious question. But I'll answer it.
Blame isn't the right word ano.

Your alliance with ulm removes any interest I have in the game. Congrats you win. Or whoever. It is of no interest to me to sit and wait for the outcome.

Rather than going AI, maybe attack one of your neighbors? Ulm or Pythium would both be fine with me. Failing that, could you send me some of your gems/items before you go out?

I seem to have found a sub for Ashdod but it will be decided in the evening today. So I have to again! pause the game for something like 12h to clarify the situation with subbing.

After a LOOOONG week I just got power back this morning. As you can imagine, I'm gonna be pretty busy today. I probably won't be able to even get to my turn until tomorrow.

Doesn't really matter if it hosts without me. It'll only be a couple more turns until my empire is small enough to go AI.

I missed the last turn. I don't have the time for these long turns right now, and I'm not exactly enjoying myself with this slow death.

I went AI this turn. To all my neighbors with NAP's, come take my capitol before Ulm or Machaka get there.

October 7th, 2008, 05:18 PM
Some players (including myself) are facing difficulties with completing the current turn so I'll postpone hosting by 24h. And also, as we are in the late game now, I suggest to permanently change the hosting interval to 72h.

I'm currently facing a problem with my home computer so if it isn't solved today, I'll need the game paused until Saturday afternoon (36h).

I for one am shocked, absolutely shocked, by C'tis' use of Armageddon. Just because you are going out of the game, doesn't mean you have to ruin everything for the rest of us! I think it is up to all nations of the world to put aside our differences and destroy Ctis, while there is still some world left to rule over.

JimMorrison
November 15th, 2008, 01:50 AM
I am confused, absolutely confused by your assertion that poor C'tis could do such a thing.

First, I have no mage capable of casting Wish, and second, I don't have it researched.

Maybe, just maybe, you could get over your shock and look at the person who cast Utterdark this very turn. Maybe it will all start to make a bit of sense then.

I am much more likely to pump every gem I have into summons, and turn my last castle into a meatgrinder for my assailant, than to do something silly like hurt everyone else with Armageddon. Oh wait, that's what I did. Ask Mictlan how fun the meatgrinder was, I'm sure he would be willing to attest that I had far too many summons there to have possibly managed a Wish, what with my 4E/3D/4N pretender, and my best Astral mages being a couple of Couatls with Starshine Skullcaps. Tremble, mortal.

ano
November 15th, 2008, 07:55 AM
Well, it seems quite logical to me that it was you who casted Armageddon. Probably, it is better to ask JimMorrison himself if he did cast it. I seriously doubt it. The only nation that could benefit from it was yours

My understanding of human psychology tells that AdmiralZhao is trying to cheat us. I understand it is so but I can't really see any sense in it.
Well, so be it. Let's try to do at least something

JimMorrison

It's a pretty funny gambit, really. I just defended my lone castle from Mictlan last turn, and barely survived. Maybe he would do us the favor of revealing whether or not there was an S9 mage present. :p

I agree, looks like Zhao peed in the pool, and pointed at me. ;)

I don't think it is needed. Things seem quite obvious to me and I really see no need in lies.

AdmiralZhao
November 16th, 2008, 02:12 AM
Well, as the only water nation left in the game, the pool is Ryleh's to pee in or not as we see fit. :)

As for S9 casters, I understand that they are not always necessary to cast Armageddon. Our thaumaturges speculate that if a casting of Solar Brilliance was to become corrupted, perhaps by long exposure to vast clouds of poison and stench, that the very solar sphere might be damaged or disrupted, causing all manner of dire portents upon the world.

Taking on account in-game (and real life) situation Shinuyama and Ulm would like to take a (at least) 3-day pause. We know that it is a lot and the game becomes very slow but we're at the stage when empires and difficulty are so huge that every turn may be decisive especially taking on account the last turn, armageddons etc.
It's mainly me who needs it. I have a lot of work now and I didn't manage to find a sub. I'm sorry but I don't think game is possible without me now.

AdmiralZhao
November 17th, 2008, 09:55 PM
I'm fine with a pause. Also, if you need help finding a sub, I could do some advertising. Practically anyone is going to be an easier for than you. :)

ano
November 22nd, 2008, 12:59 PM
Hello again. Guys, it's really hard for me to play now and that's true. Sub doesn't really solve the problem because the empire is huge and even experienced player will find it hard to understand all the aspects and plans.
So we have three options now:
1) find a competent sub for Shinuyama
2) continue playing a slow boat
3) agree to a draw

Of course, I would choose third option not because I want to win here(I don't care how this game ends just because I'm extremely tired of Dominions now) but just because my ally will be most probably be doomed if I stop playing. But I understand that Zhao doesn't want a draw and thinks he will win. Let's discuss these options.
I will finish my current turn tomorrow that's why I'm making a one final postpone now.

AdmiralZhao
November 22nd, 2008, 02:50 PM
Hi everyone. All 3 options would be fine with me. I have the next week off, so I have no excuse for not completing a turn except a certain dread of spending 4 hours moving around hundreds of magic items. A draw would be acceptable. Ryleh is quite strong in terms of magic (the gem income on the score graph is about a 1/10th of our actual income :) ), but my opponents have both magic power and many mortal armies, so I'm not sure how such a war would actually play out.

ano
November 22nd, 2008, 06:32 PM
Fine, I am very glad to hear it. Draw is the best choice, imho. We realized that your actual gem income and abilities are terrific but we also had a lot of things to show you.
But it is a too heavy weight for me now and, once again, I am very glad. It was a pleasure playing with you and I hope we will meet at the battlefield once when we both have a bit more time to spare. Nevertheless, it was a nice game.
Once we discuss it all with Mictlan, I will close the game. Sorry, everybody, but as draw is acceptable for all, I think it'll be the best choice.

ano
November 24th, 2008, 09:27 AM
So be it. This game has been ended in a draw between mighty nations of R'lyeh, Ulm and Shinuyama. I wish I see you in some further games)

Good game everyone! Now that it is over, would you mind telling what your plans were? For my part, I was hoping to continue using Burden of Time + Armageddon to wipe out all the gold, blood slaves, and enemy mages. I figured that if I could survive long enough to do that, then my steadily growing gem income and tartarians would be able to finish off the world. My initial battle plan was to just protect the sites with bonuses (20% of alteration, 20% of conjuration) while the globals wore down the attacking armies. I had some raids planned, and would have counterattacked a bit, but I wasn't planning to risk anything significant while you had dozens of mages with each army, ready to cast Weapons of Sharpness.

My primary worries were 1) someone had enough astral gems to Dispel Gift of Health, which had a lot of gems behind it 2) Shinuyama had masses of undead chaff, which meant somewhere back there were some dozens of undead priests re-animating the chaff, which meant that they would be more or less unaffected by my BoT and Armageddon.

ano
November 24th, 2008, 08:39 PM
Well, I'm impressed. I didn't think that you would continue Armageddonning after GoH was dispelled. I must say that this combo (Armageddon + BoT) is not that impressive against Shinuyama because mages rarely get diseased and even when they do, they die rather long and they are also absolutely expendable. (I think that Shinuyama is one of the strongest MA nations but it has nothing to do with the discussion).
What our plans were... The main reason I didn't want to continue the game is because this turn would be terrific for me. I was planning a massive attack at many directions at once (20-25 provinces at least), preparing anti-tartarian sc's and protecting my artifacts (which I had many) against your potential further armageddons. Yes, I had a ton of reanimating priests who were generating about 400 longdead/turn, I also had full-power blood with average income of 150-200 slaves/turn and many powerful blood mages. Both of these could be heavily affected by armageddons because soulless and longdead never heal and slaves can't be gathered in empty provinces. However, I still had some nasty sites giving a lot of money, a huge fire gem income and about 8000 gold in treasury so I doubt I would suffer the lack of gold badly. My experienced DaiBakemono armies (great unit, btw. Many of them survived from the first turns of the game) backed up by 20-30 mages were also ready to march.
We also decided to cast some cheap globals to fill all slots so that you would have a chance of dispelling your own globals.
Also, this turn I saw that you had only a couple of weak domes and many clam- and artifact-wearing (probably) mages at your capital. We were going to dispel forest dome and cast about 20-30 earth attacks to reduce your clam income. We didn't decide for sure where to cast but everything was well-prepared.
It's all about me.
Karnoza should have done quite opposite thing. He was preparing a one powerful attack at your province with Alt bonus site which you couldn't teleport in due to your own domes. He had about 1400 sieging power and was going to break the walls in a single turn. It was a well-planned attack that he was nurturing for a long time.
But, all in all, I am VERY happy I don't have do all this. Frankly speaking, I am very, very tired of Dominions and especially of late-game) When I showed my empire to a potential sub, he cried "Oh, God! I will never dig it!"
;)

ano
November 24th, 2008, 08:43 PM
As for astral gems, we had a total astral income of about 200 per turn so even if you did cast Nexus for 999 gems, we would dispel it. That was what I supposed you to do after you dispelled my gem-giving globals.
