Heh. As QM asked, and as I was sort of testing, I'm changing this post to read:

Are soulless only produced if there are corpses in a province? And if so, was that changed in a patch? I swear I remember fewer soulless being produced if there were no corpses...; )

I haven't checked the file, so maybe this doesn't apply, but were there corpses in the province?

EDIT: I believe soulless have always need corpses.

For Reanimate Soulless (the strategic order), there have always needed to be corpses, and the type you get depends on their equipment and your nation.

For battlefield summons, it depends on the spell. Raise Dead works anywhere. Some others give you more soulless if there are unburied bodies in the province.

Reanimate soulless is pretty bad, unless you have a lot good troop corpses in your province. Like maybe after a big battle with good troops. Otherwise, reanimate longdead is they way to go.

Raise Dead only works if there are corpses or if one side in the fight has already taken casualties... and then it only works up to the number of casualties or corpses that there are.

I thought raise dead works everywhere too (but I am often wrong). Has this been tested?

Extensively. It used to be that if you left Death mages unscripted in combat they would sometimes cast Raise Dead repeatedly to no effect (except a nifty clacking sound). The battlefield AI has subsequently been patched to avoid this behavior--it does not cast Raise Dead unless at least one Soulless would result.

MaxWilson,

Thanks. Useful to know. I guess I have been lucky so far. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
