View Full Version : Jotunland (PBEM) - (game on!)

Llama has graciously offered to help me get a newbie play by email game going. I'm hoping for people with less than 5 MP games played, or veterans willing to take it easy and show people the ropes (before massacring them).
Early Age
version 3.17
Cradle of Dominions Map
Mods: CBM 1.3
8-10 players
game settings: default
We're currently waiting on llama to do us the awesome service of making the game. It's going to be called 'Jotunland'.
I'll try to cackle more.

Conceptual balance mod 1.3. It's designed to make less things suck to the point of being unplayable. It also makes some of the more powerful, overused things a little more expensive.

Not that many games use CBM, so it would be a little unusual to use it in a newbie game. On the other hand, it arguably should be used much more (I'm beginning to think that, for instance), so perhaps it makes sense to get to know it early.

July 16th, 2008, 04:20 PM
My instinct is to do it modless, since it's a newbie game, but I'll read up on it after work.
quantum_mechani
July 16th, 2008, 06:13 PM
My 2 cents is that it's actually easier for new players to use Conceptual Balance. The reasoning being that many of the 'pitfall' options new players often spend valuable resources on are improved (things like independent light cavalry, horned serpents, many titan pretenders).
Aezeal
July 16th, 2008, 06:34 PM
I'd like in as Hinnom
I'm just trying them out and can't even beat the AI so I guess I have somethings to learn, mighty vanheim and helheim dominate me (mictlan helps them too)
I'd not mind CB mod, don't know it really though but what the heck http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

i'll play also... i'm busy finalizing my nefelheim pretender for another game today but tomorrow i can work out a pretender for this one..
cbm sounds good since it seems like everyone uses it and stuff might as well learn on it and forget vanilla exists?
oh i thought it sounded clear.. i'll be taking nefelheim unless anyone objects or whatnot..
i've never ever played a MP game but i signed up for one yesterday and i've hosted three small blitzs since then... if this game starts this weekend... i'll probaly have hosted like five casual duels by then but hopefully that still means i'm quite the tenderfoot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

oh i'd like it if we played cbm simply because nothing about cbm is at all more diffucult than basic... and cbm seems so popular in other multiplayer games that we might as well learn cbm (i've been studying hard to learn cbm for the past 2days!)
but i am totally fine with not using it...
and... we'll just have to make sure to send a buncha diplomatic messages around in an attempt to form an anti aez alliance!
additionally is it considered bad manners to use aim instead of ingame messages? since ingame messages take ages to work out .. once you get friendly terms with someone is it possible to use messaging to communicate? or is that bad manners towards all the people not doing it?

Any game that doesn't specify what diplomatic channels to use is pretty much any thing goes.

The most common method for diplomacy is forum. I have used forum, email, aim and in-game diplo.

I don't mean to be mean to my friend Aezeal, but if he plays Hinnom he will EAT YOU ALL.
I think probably if a more experienced player is going to play in a newbie game they should at least not play a rush nation, because they'll end up knocking some newbies out straight away.
I'd recommend Marverni. Or Aezeal, you could just join a non-newbie game.

Now to AEZ, Hinnom really is an aezzzz kicker (sorry about the pun) and if everyone is ok I am ok with it.
I just lasted 19 turns on my first MP and 8 of them I was dead but would not quit.
If its all of us agianst him, bring it on.
But I would like to be around long enough to make mistakes and be able to recover from them and learn because the other guys are as new as I am and maybe won't see the mistake.
Thats it folks...I will say no more about it one way or the other (besides I am playin a nation that I have never even looked at so I have no delusions of where I am going to end up)!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Well I've played in some games (7-ish?).. but last 2 had to be ended due to vacation, and never had much succes.
I'd not mind looking for another game cus llama does have a point (though my SP hinnom went abysmal)
I'd not mind being given a random nation either though...
if I'm given a random nation I'd need to know asap so I can look into it (I really only know Niefel and TC a bit as EA.. and giving me Niefel wouldn't be a good idea I think cus I have had more practice with them and I can get a good early game with them)
ow and I didn't like TC very much so plz a random nation but not TC or Niefel..
or just kick me out and I look for another game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

CB complete 1.3 and Worthy Heroes should be plenty, although hosting with both is redundant, I think.. I believe WH is included in CB complete.
Anyyyyyyway, you don't even need to enable them when you PLAY the game. You just have to have them installed. The only thing you have to MAKE SURE OF when playing a conceptual(ly) balance(d) game is that CB is ENABLED when you CREATE YOUR PRETENDER.
Otherwise there's a very good chance that when the game starts, it will say you are a cheater and give you an archmage with no extra magic and totally neutral scales, which you don't really want http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Oh, whsiker, I have a suggestion to make. You are doing a lovely job as host, moderator, administrator, except you should learn to feel comfortable making decisions http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Just say, "yea CB!" Or even, "nae CB!" Just not both, because then we'll be back where we started. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I'm worried I might accidentally delete my pretender before the game starts ;D

looking forward to playing
GrudgeBringer
July 18th, 2008, 07:32 AM
yeah, either way is fine but I need to redo my pretender...(SIGH)
WHY do I need to redo my pretender (besides being called a cheater and getting something stupid instead)?
Since we are all new and havn't played with it, what is different that we need to know that would affect pretender creation?
namad
July 18th, 2008, 07:59 AM
some of the pretenders are too useless .. or too automatically the only reasonable choice...
CBmod just adds a few points of cost here and subtracts a few there to try and even this out.... generally any tactic that is valid in one is valid in another.. it's just CBmod tries to make more choices of chasis reasonable choices instead of some being fairly unreasonable...
really i don't care one way or the other ... yeah... just be in charge and decide... add it to the first post.. post that you added it to the first post at the end... and give me 24h and i'll have it uploaded (also it'll have to have a name and exist on llamaserver)

So while I understand you have had a lot to do and appreciate your hard work I would like to have a nation that can take advantage of a mod we decided on AFTER we picked our nations.
But I will live with whatever you decide as this is just a learning expieriance and I have never played either nation anyway and have no hopes of winning this.

Um, guys, I'm a newb and this is my first MP game, so when it was time to choose rules and starting settings I didn't ask anything due to lack of experience. I've been browsing this forum for the past few days and have found that the major exploit is engaging battle with a single mage, using the Mist of Deception spell and retreating afterwards. The spell is bugged and it's effect continues even when if the caster has escaped, massacring enemy or making him to retreat. This way a single mage with the cost of 2 air gems defeits the entire army. Stopping this tactic is nearly impossible even for experienced player, not telling about newbs. (If I said something wrong - correct me.)
I don't want game to be spoiled by something like this, and since the game had only just begun - my request is to forbid players to script the 'retreat' order for the caster of this spell. As I saw, most of the civilized games have restriction for this spell one way or another, or played on Twan's Mist of Deception replacement mod.
Another one often banned exploit is "Overfilling enemy lab" - sending magic items to enemy to make him lose his own items. So maybe we should forbid this one too?
Please tell your opinions and/or suggestions.
Aezeal
July 23rd, 2008, 03:51 PM
I do hope all exploits are banned in this game, I consider it standard practice really
namad
July 23rd, 2008, 07:07 PM
sounds reasonable... the rule of "all exploits are banned" is a bit vague since what counts as an exploit is probably debatable... but i'd reckon all exploits which ever get listed in this thread are banned sounds reasonable?

This is a NOOB game, I'm pretty sure at our level we shouldn't even know about the exploits, and if we do we read it somewhare where it was said that it was an exploit.

I've already send a PM to administrator of this game Whisker_Buiscuit that I'm going offline until sunday 11:00 - 13:00 GMT. I've already made my move this turn (7th) and likely I won't make it to the deadline of turn 8. So it is his desicion whether to wait for me or not, though I would prefer to make my move myself as it seems to be very critical to me... I'm very sorry anyway... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

has argatha been stale'ing? twice in a row? and isn't argatha the admin?... it seems unlikely they'd have no change in army size or provinces two turns in a row ... AND also submit their turn RIGHT before the deadline

Yep, exactly my point. The administrator should watch over the game till the end, even if he gives up (and, according graphs, I think he did). My suggestion: if he doesn't show up next turn we should PM Llamabeast about assigning one of us as the administrator. The new administrator will set Agartha to AI afterwards.

it seems like the admin has yet to set them ai? or find replacement? and they are going to stale a 7th time? or is this now fixed?

Excuse me, but I don't see your activity as the administrator. Agartha is still not set to AI, you wanted to make a delay for yourself, but you staled. And now I'm nervous becouse I need to talk to admin about possible delay for myself on turn number 14 and I don't want to end up stale'ing again...

we seem to have a game that is somewhat helter skelter right now.
Nobody's fault as most of us are new and this is a good learning experiance for all of us to watch more closely.
However, while I am one to fight to the last dog (or Giant as it seems)I also am not real thrilled that we have a admin that has staled 5 turns (making it easy for one player), and another player with some exp but staled anyway. I would suggest that we bag this game and start it agian with the same basic core of people and maybe a couple of reliable folks that have the time and desire to play. (Bwaha is one that like to play lots of games)
Sometimes life gets in the way...
That being said ..Kalisa go ahead and attck my force if you win we will ally, if you lose You are hurt bad.
One battle for it all!!!
IF we don't get this together quickly I will just be going thru the motions as it seems the game is unbalanced now.
Any other thoughts that will change my mind?
WingedDog
July 31st, 2008, 10:19 AM
Well, I do not see any reason to finish the game. All we need is another administrator. Agartha is dead anyway, so person who kills it doesn't get much bonuses, just the same as killing independents.
As for stale'ing - I think there are the same situations in just every game. Everybody has some reasons from time to time to be offline, just look at the "sub wanted" topics in this forum. Me and Aezeal did stale for one turn each becouse we had obstacles not allowing us to make our moves in 24 hours. It is an administrator's duty to listen to player's requests and to react, so a normal administrator would likely move a deadline as we asked and we wouldn't skip our turns.
So, as I said, all we need is a new administrator.

Let it be known that the honorless dogs of Arcoscephale have broken their peace treaty with the nation of Fomoria. A mere two months after agreeing to our offer of alliance, they struck at our lands in a surprise betrayal. Should any wish to punish this infamy, they will have the friendship of the giants of Fomoria.

Aezeal, Defender of the Oni has attacked us by surprise in the middle of the negotiations he proposed, followed by a message refusing our offered terms and announcing his intention to drive us into the sea. It seems, however, that he lacks the ability to back up his words, as he was sorely wounded and forced to flee the field by our province defense.
In a separate matter, the nation of Fomoria is looking to sell water gems to finance our defense against Arcoscephale and Yomi. Any nation interested in aiding us will surely be rewarded.

Poor, helpless Arcoscephale is now laying siege to our capital city. Their weak and harmless troops slaughtered our 50 points of province defense and forced our mages, who were evilly protecting their homeland, to flee. If any nation should care to assist us in our civilians' vicious bullying of Arcoscephale's armed forces, or possibly trade money, air gems, or death gems for our surplus of water gems, they would earn the gratitude of our vile citizens, who treacherously attacked Arcoscephale's weapons with their faces.

Using events in one game to justify actions in another because you are playing against nations run by the same person is seriously disruptive. For instance, if one were in a winning position in one game and a losing position in another, one could trade resources to another nation in game one and have a nation run by the same player in game two trade resources to your embattled nation there; this would be totally unfair to the other players in game two. Basically, sharing anything between games, including grudges against nations which happen to be run by the same player, is very disruptive and makes the game less fun.

The traitorous filth of Arcoscephale have conquered the Fomorian homeland, taking only a handful of casualties as their irresistable horde of Wind Riders slaughtered everything we had to throw at them. Our only small victory was that our summoned shades killed a few of the equinophiles as we attempted to flee the field; all of our troops and mages were cut down. Again, we beg for aid from any nation with a desire to avoid Arcoscephale's grip of death.

He blasted into my area and came up with a plan tostay in my area for a length of time.
However kallisa my ally is the party he was going to attack and I had to tell him to leave my lands EXACTLY as he entered them and I would not attack or hold a grudge (no pun intended)agianst him as long as he made war on someone else.
You that have played with me before know that I am fiercely loyal to my allies and will go down with the ship if need be.
I hate to welcome our new sub with a War declaration but I declare war effective immediately.
We are about the same in all areas so it will be interesting.
I would appreciate those without an intrest in this conflict to let us settle this.:cold:
Respectfully,
Three Toed Pete, Prophet to the People of Helheim

2GrudgeBringer:
It sounds loud!
But what do we have in reality: there are no troops of mine on the Helheim's territories. Only one territory (№55), (which I have inherited from my forerunner) might belong to that country, and I don't mind, if he brings it back. My forces entered only Kailasa's provinces.
And one more question: why did you capture upper province (№70) of your ally Kailassa? I didn't have enough troops last turn to do it myself.
Several month in a row GrudgeBringer told what my troops have to do and where they must go, and was changing his plans every half of an hour. At last I was tired of it, and I do as I planned from the begining. And I didn't climb into Helheim territories.
So war? War is good...

I believe I have stated my case to you in privite with just an overlay on the forum.
I took more than one of my allies provinces with his permission in order to have a better permission to defend agianst you as an agressor.
You have not shown the courtesy that you seem to imply and YES, you have decided to do what you want in my teritory.
I will let this game rest on the next few turns, but don't let kalissa fool you..he is a strong player and has set many traps for the unsuspecting.
Also I think you may have a suprise in store for you.;)
However, there are never any hard feelings or carry over to another game...so good luck, we will both learn some things and If you win you will have HUGE territories to bask in!!

I repeat: these territories are not yours! Doesn't matter. I'll destroy both of you :))) ...if I can. :)

From my own perspective, a non agression treaty means you will take no actions to harm the person with whom you have a treaty.
So for example, If I am about to invade a territory - and you conquer it specifically to prevent it - you have violated the nap.
Territories 55, 70, 46 were all kailasa's when I invaded 55.
Words otherwise simply aren't the truth.

I have never heard of such an interpretation of the phrase "non-agression", for what it's worth. Attacking a third party hardly seems like an aggressive action.

i think it's pretty common for people to do this... generally it makes you hate the person and want to go to war with them... but i don't believe it specifically breaks the NAP terms...
i think it's a pretty grey area... and i suppose if you wanted to avoid having it happen you'd have to PM someone before you invaded a 3rd party that was adjacent to both people...
i mean in another game i had someone teleport into a province that i was going to attack.. win the battle then rout me off as well... then claim well... we have a nap and i was here first so i'm keeping it... it makes you hate them but i don't think it counts as an outright lie... unless maybe you specifically ask them not too
i think generally a nap has the terms you agree upon plus no attacking... any additional terms about neutral provinces probably just have to be included as separate terms?
i've also discussed specifically which independents each party would claim and then had the other person just take the ones he promised to me and say... well i didn't attack you so you shouldn't complain even though we spent ages specifically discussing which independents each party would take...

The Fomorian nation is struggling to come up with the funds necessary to survive. We are now selling all the gems we can for 15 gold or best offer. We are not in possession of any astral pearls, but all other varieties are up for grabs.

a) would anyone like to sub for me? there is a solid chance of winning the game if you do b) can we switch to 48hour cycle otherwise? now that everyone has declared war on me all at the same time i need a lot more time to plan my turns and if the cycle doesn't increase and i don't get a sub i'll just have to go ai
i may be overreacting but i'm pretty drunk and I'm nearly so upset that i am contemplating quitting all the games i am in simultaneously and never playing again...
i think i am mostly mad at myself for not listening to the intuition that diplomacy was pointless in this game and should never be attempted
but yeah seriously now that everyone is at war with me I am going to require 48hour cycling to even consider continuing to play

I'd offer to sub for you namad, but it would be bad for the community - why lose a player.
I doubt everyone is at war with you - I think kailasa and helheim are busy with sauromatia.
I hope they will bump it to 48 - but just remember its supposed to be fun. Think of the bragging rights if you win - all against one.....

well i calmed down after sleeping.. and i think i might be more of a blitz'er than a pbem'er... pbem... i just get waaaaaay too focused about stuff...
i don't even think i really enjoy the concept of finishing a game.... like I was going to try to make sauromantia wet himself with just two units... and even though i knew arco was going to backstab me i focused on poison immunity items instead of winged helmets for several turns just cause well i didn't really want to fight arco :) he has so many provinces even if i won a war with him it'd take too long and i'd get bored...
i should have taken arco's personal insult as the declaration of war it likely was... thats what i like about blitz's and small maps.... short game short fuses low number of provinces.. everyone knows what everyone is on about....
honestly i think i'm just still mostly mad at jazzepi, not wingeddog... what do you think would be better for the game? taking chris as a sub? or me finishing it up when I don't really give a damn about winning and i am just hoping to see the coolest looking battles i can?

i haven't even really looked at my turn, due to disgust with myself... and the hosting is set for 6hours... not 30hours... so theres little chance me or chris will have a chance to do this turn on this time table?

I'm paying attention to the thread -
But I'm a fairly picky player too namad - I substituted the sauromatia position only for a few turns, as I believed it has no long term viability.
I agree the turn should be switched to 48 - but in the interrim why not do the best you can - and of course if you really have no interest in playing the game.. I'll pick it up.
Best

sauromantia had no chance to win the game (sorry sauromantia)
at this point either arco wins, niefelheim wins... or somehow arco and niefelheim destory eachother in a massive war and someone (helheim or sauro win)
or the admin fails to set this cycle to 48hours ... niefelheim stales and then arco probably just wins i reckon

Oi, see what happens when I dare to sleep for a while... hosting has been set to 36 hours, if that isn't enough then I'll extend it to 48, but I'd like to try and keep things going as quickly as possible, so let's give this a shot first.
PS: I'm not at war with you, Namad. Of course, I'm barely in the game at this point.

Is there no e-mail entry on the new profiles? I just can't seem to find it. chrispedersen, if you could send me a private message with your email address, that would be great. I have delayed hosting by twelve hours to allow time to get the switchover taken care of; the game will now host at 01:02 GMT on Sunday August 24th, although I hope that the Niefelheim turn will be in before then.

I would say that the alliance is with the nation, not the player, and thus such alliances continue. Of course, you aren't REQUIRED to honor an alliance anyway.

i've informed chris of all my plans and prior dealings as best as i could very briefly..... so ideally the game can continue unchanged except for it will have his brain not mine...
if chris emails me his .2h before he is officially on-duty i can submit his turn that way...
i would hope chris would contact the players in the game i have told him about to reaffirm any deals i had with them... but honestly... like i said i'm in a buncha other guys and the stress was just getting to me but i'd like the game to not be ruined... me going ai would totally have shaken things up too much.... me playing in a foolish dramatic fashion wouldn't've been to great either
i hope i didn't cause anyone to suffer a lose of enjoyment... I'm diverting a lot of my dominions time to another pbem game now :)

I had a 10 turn alliance with Named and a 3 turn warning in the third turn of it.....just wanted to kake sure it was still in effect.
If we DON'T honor pacts made with the previous player it unbalances things as you probably have a weaker Defense on the side towards the ally.
Sooooo, whoever is taking over for Named we have a 7 turn alliance and a 3 turn warning after that.
Welcome to the Game!!!!!!:)

Thank you.
Namad spoke very well of your alliance, and that he had planned on helping you with either kailasa or sauromatia.
He indicated which - I just don't have it in front of me at the moment.
Nief is in pretty bad situation at the moment, having lost 6-7 territories this turn.. and will lose another 6-7 next turn.
I will be able to turn it around, I think.. but it will be tough.

You are being watched. Your armies are being watched. Your servents are being watched, your magic sites, your dancing girls.
Recall that this allows Arcosephale to know where everyone of your magic sites are. Will you ever know if those random events that happened - were just that.. random?
And of course, the eyes of god were what allowed him to attack with such deadly efficacy, removing 4 of Niefleheims best magic sites in one turn.
I do not know about you - but I don't like being watched. I suggest we blind this peeping tom - and I have the ability to do it, but not the means.
I will contribute 40 gems and a mage to do it, to the casting of 'Fate of Oedipus' - that leaves 40 gems. What say yea...
Is it worth 10 gems for four of you - to regain your privacy?

Alas, it seems Niefelheim is already way to strong for me, and gets even stronger with time. Many of his Niefel Jarls have a full set of artifacts and are able to slaughter my entire army, so best I can do is just to harass him by raiding random provinces with pegasii. Still, since time only works for him, I'm willing to fight till the end and hope for some mad luck.
