View Full Version : Pretenders Playtime: Pretenders playing in this thread!

RadioGibbon
July 18th, 2008, 01:38 PM
Hello all,

In my eagerness to get involved in the MP scene I'll be administrating this game (hosted on llamaserver, courtesy of llamabeast) for new/inexperienced players. I've tried to make the conditions as simple as possible in order not to alarm, confuse or shock any potential players.

Details:
Server: LlamaServer (automated play-by-email)
Hosting interval: 24 hours moving to 48 hours in later stages.
Age: Early
Graphs: On
Settings: Default
Mods: None
Map: Cradle of Dominions
Players: 10-12

So please feel free to sign up with your preferred nation, and then we can move onto uploading pretenders.

Cheers

Isn't Glory of the Gods a little too big for 12 player, but it sure sounds tempting,
I'd take Lanka if it's OK?

RadioGibbon
July 18th, 2008, 02:29 PM
Hmmm, Glory of the Gods (MP) claims to have 227 Land and 47 Sea, which would come out at 22 or 23 provinces each, which does seem a little high (although on the other hand might provide time for players to totter around and learn to walk so to speak).

The Map doesn't have to be finalised until sign up is complete, and if the twelve slots fill up really quickly I might see if we can't get another couple of players or so interested.

llamabeast
July 18th, 2008, 02:30 PM
I would also think that perhaps Glory is rather too large. For 10-12 players I'd recommend Cradle as a lovely and good-sized map.

RadioGibbon
July 18th, 2008, 02:41 PM
Alrighty then. Map changed to Cradle of Dominions.

I tried Ermor in the last one and would like to try it again if possible.

I'd like to join please if I may.

I'll take the token water nation since nobody else has yet. Don't know much about any of them, so will find out which one I prefer and get back to you.

RadioGibbon
July 20th, 2008, 01:11 PM
Yep. I'll change the thread title as soon as the game is setup and we can upload pretenders then. No reason not to be working them out now though (I know I am...)

Okay guys, you can now upload your pretenders (see my FAQ if you're not sure how). The game name is "Playtime".

RadioGibbon
July 20th, 2008, 08:57 PM
Thanks Llamabeast, much appreciate your hosting this.

RadioGibbon
July 22nd, 2008, 01:07 PM
I think I'll start the game with 11 players tomorrow morning if the final pretender hasn't been uploaded.

llamabeast
July 22nd, 2008, 01:09 PM
I recommend PMing him if you haven't already. Sometimes people just haven't been paying attention.

By the way, don't start the game until I say it's okay. As a result of work on the LlamaServer you now have the option of starting the game, but because of the incompleteness of the work, if you start it it won't work properly.

RadioGibbon
July 22nd, 2008, 02:53 PM
Yep, I've PM'd him,

and thanks for the warning about starting the game, I would have just gone blundering in.

GrudgeBringer

Are we about ready to start?

Just trying to get a timeline.

Thanks

James243
July 23rd, 2008, 01:27 PM
Sounds like llamaserver is being updated - I'd say a few days at least.

llamabeast
July 23rd, 2008, 05:10 PM
No no, I am working on it maniacally at the moment, but it is still working in the meantime.

RadioGibbon - PM me when you want to start. It wouldn't have been unreasonably to go blundering in with the "start game" option in fact. I'd forgotten it was visible in fact. Yours was the first game for which it was visible, and will be the last for which it doesn't work.

llamabeast
July 23rd, 2008, 08:10 PM
Okay, the game is all ready to go, and the "Start game" button should work now. However, Ermor appears to have made a mistake with his pretender - I think he must have had some mod enabled (probably the Conceptual Balance mod) when he sent his pretender in.

So, Ermor (sorry, Das123 apparently) - could you remake and resend your pretender please? When you've done so let RadioGibbon know and he can start the game.

Oops. File rebuilt and sent.

das123

I'm getting an error message saying the Ermor is already taken when I tried to upload. Any other ideas?

llamabeast
July 24th, 2008, 06:15 AM
Oh, weird. Are you using the same e-mail address?

I'll remove Ermor anyway.

llamabeast
July 24th, 2008, 06:15 AM
Removed. You should definitely be able to upload now.

das123
July 24th, 2008, 07:28 AM

RadioGibbon

Alright then, lets get this show on the road. You should all be getting your first turns in a few minutes.

llamabeast
July 25th, 2008, 05:11 AM
Heh, bug, sorry. Still a few little flaws to iron out following a large number of changes in the server lately. It turns out the "Start game" admin option does not, in fact, cause it to start.

Anyway, this is all very helpful for the debugging. Game started now.

RadioGibbon
July 25th, 2008, 10:03 AM
Heh. I would have posted something after telling everyone I'd started the game that in fact it hadn't started, but the forums seemed to be down.

Anyway, I imagine I have a turn to go do.

James243
July 26th, 2008, 08:25 PM
Is it possible to send an email message to Agartha and Arcoscephale? Don't want them staling their first turn, and they may not realise the game has started. I'm IM'ed them, but you only get those if you check the site, and if you checked the site then you probably checked here anyway. Maybe we should delay the first hosting? I think patience is much better than people missing their early turns, and infinitely better than having a couple of AIs early on...

das123
July 26th, 2008, 09:50 PM
I think that the admin has the email addresses so that would be a good idea. There are less than eight hours now before the turn is missed. Perhaps another 24 hours would be an idea.

das123
July 26th, 2008, 09:52 PM
I've been playing a single player game on the map just to get used to it. It says that provinces with asterisks have higher level magic sites. Is this the case? In my game they are worse than the other provinces.

GrudgeBringer
July 26th, 2008, 09:53 PM

Hi GrudgeBringer,

You can request your turn to be resent...

http://www.llamaserver.net/doAdminAction.cgi?game=Playtime&action=resend

I've just asked for yours to be sent again.

RadioGibbon
July 27th, 2008, 06:34 AM
So is it right to say then that:

Whsiker_Biscuit - Agartha

GrudgeBringer - Arcosephalae

Didn't receive their first turns? Did you get yours after the requested resend GrudgeBringer? (Is the e-mail your checking the one you submitted your pretender from?)

We can roll back to the first turn if Agartha & Arcosephale want.

RadioGibbon
July 27th, 2008, 08:08 AM
GrudgeBringer, I have changed your e-mail address to (address given above) and requested a resend.

I couldn't see what your e-mail address was before however, so I dont know if this will do any good.

If it is working then we can roll back to the start once we sort out whatever problems Whsiker_Biscuit is having.

Edit by llamabeast: Removed e-mail address to prevent harvesting by spambots.

GrudgeBringer
July 27th, 2008, 10:42 AM
i got both turns and sent in turn 1 but it was stale...I did send in turn 2.

I don't understand how if my pretender went in ok then I wouldn't receive my first turn on time.

I don't know how this will effect me in the game but i'm not happy about it.

RadioGibbon
July 27th, 2008, 11:34 AM
We'll roll back to turn 1 since you were afflicted with technical mishaps.

Sorry to anyone who got lucky in their first turn, but I can't imagine too many people did.

llamabeast
July 27th, 2008, 11:47 AM
This all sounds strange, haven't encountered such problems before. Those of you who didn't get the first turn - have you checked your junk mail folder?

By the way everyone, you should be careful posting e-mail addresses on public forums. Spam bots will find the addresses and start spamming you (it happens fast). You can post them in the form llamabeast[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net and be fine though, because they're not desperately smart (yet).

GrudgeBringer

Thanks for taking the time to replay turn 1.

I did check my junk file and amd my deleted file and no dice.

RadioGibbon
July 27th, 2008, 07:22 PM
I checked another game Whsiker_Biscuit was playing Agartha in (Jotunland) and he's missed his last 3 turns in that as well. I guess we'll need a sub before we can get started.

I've postponed Hosting for 24 hours, hopefully we can get someone quickly.

Sorry and thanks for your patience Guys.

JimMorrison

So hey..... I've got a few games ending here, and so will have time to add this one maybe - I do like Agartha. 8 )

What I am curious though, has the game actually officially started? It sounds like it sort of hasn't..... I'd be much more interested if I could design my own pretender, rather than being stuck with who knows what. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I could have the file sent within a few hours at most of knowing I had the spot, so it wouldn't require much waiting, if it's an option.

RadioGibbon
July 27th, 2008, 09:56 PM
Hi JimMorrison.

The game hasn't taken off yet but I was hoping to avoid evryone having to resubmit their Pretenders.

I'll check with llamabeast to see if a restart would delete the pretenders or if only yourself would have to "resubmit" a pretender, presumably after "Agarthas" e-mail address is altered.

Either way I'm off to bed now so theirs no need to rush yourself.

EDIT: I mean if we do have to resubmit pretenders thats not really any hassle, but I'll just check what the correct technical procedure is for a restart, cos I've never admined before and am still feeling my way around.

Cheers.

If Jim wants to re-design etc then lets just start from scratch (guess who didn't like their starting position http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ). Seriously though, it isn't like the game has really kicked off in any way and it would be unfair for a sub to inherit a pretender at this stage of the game.

Want to second the appreciation for the pro-active admin of the game to date. Well done RadioGibbon and Llamabeast. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Well that's the thing - even if the first turn had been sent, if everyone was okay with me making a new pretender, then the game has to start completely over, so start positions would be regenerated, even if everyone else had the same pretender recycled.

James243
July 28th, 2008, 01:15 AM
Works for me - best to have a game where everyone is happy with their pretender (and their starting position http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif !).

Thanks for subbing in!

GrudgeBringer
July 28th, 2008, 08:03 AM
OK with me, heck I am so new I never design my pretender twice the same way anyway....

I may just get it better, as far as starting positions go if they are random then we take our chances if you have predetermined then it will work out ok...

Welcome aboard Jim!!

Calahan

I'm happy with a full re-start to allow Jim a chance to design his own Pretender. As James243 says, it's always best to have a game everyone is happy with :-)

Top marks for RadioGibbon's admin so far as well.

Please let us all know if the Pretender files need to be sent in again, or if the ones already sent in will be transfered over automatically.

We aren't restarting are we?

Calahan
July 28th, 2008, 09:07 AM
'Executor'. I'm not 100% sure what's happening, but from reading the thread, it appears that 'JimMorrison' will be coming in to to take the place of the AWOL Agartha player, and he'd like a chance to design his own Pretender rather than use the one the original Agartha player designed.

And I guess if the majority of the players are happy to allow this, then that is what will happen, and the game will be re-started with new start positions. Of course if the majority aren't happy with this, then I guess it won't happen. Unless of course the admin calls it. As his decision should always be final :-)

RadioGibbon

Okay,

Bad News: Were restarting

Good News: No one except JimMorrison need submit a pretender, and this pretender can be for any nation he likes (except of course those that are already taken).

Sorry to those of you who've already played turn 1 three times or however many it's been.

If it will help console those of you who were happy with your start posistions I was over the moon with mine, next to one of the sunburst magic sites, close to defensible bottlenecks and got the first turns merc ration.

Anyway, I've already restarted, so as soon as JimM sends in his pretender we can get started again.

I must admit, seeing an awake PoD 2 provinces from my capital, and so early, is a bit distressing. Especially when you cut me off from several territories that I rather coveted.

This is my second multi-player game. Got absolutely hammered in my first game but it was a lot of fun.

I've also had a horrible setback in this game which I am trying to recover from. Ran into a bunch of mages with all my best troops on the fourth or fifth turn and got wiped out which has really slowed my expansion. All those first timers - welcome! Second game for me.

On the topic of sob stories...

Helheim has lots of troops who have glamour. Glamour gives troops mirror image in battle. I didn't realise that it also gives stealth. Until I sent my non stealth prophet to attack a province with all stealth co combatants. I think he was more surprised than I was to find himself facing 40 woodsmen...alone.

Let's just say it hasn't been the fastest start for me either! But hey its a noob game, and still awesome fun!

JimMorrison
August 5th, 2008, 04:10 PM
That right there is tangled up with the issue of why I refuse to Prophet my starting scout (or any scout). Then they're the stealthy ones who try to avoid going in to bless your army and smite your foes, and they get Leader 0 so you can't even drop non-stealthy troops onto them to force them to go in.....

Executor
August 5th, 2008, 04:33 PM
You just have to be careful and always put them to move not sneak, and it's useful to have a stealthy prophet in many ways, and you can always put crown of command or something alike on him to make him a leader

James243
August 5th, 2008, 04:48 PM
I've noticed that making scouts prophets is pretty popular - why? Is it just to play games with other players dominion? Unless you're playing against mictlan it seems little benefit. But I must be missing something...

JimMorrison
August 5th, 2008, 05:01 PM
Commander Prophet and Scout Prophet are very different beasts, sure. They both have capabilities and drawbacks. All I was saying, was that with my playstyle and what I generally try to accomplish - I really dislike the Scout Prophet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Executor
August 5th, 2008, 05:43 PM
There are many reasons, you get H3 for blessing while your starting army patrols or attacks, spread dominion to attack like with abysia or niefelheim, with MA C'tis you can get a stealthy prophet assassin, Ermor to reanimate from start...

JimMorrison
August 5th, 2008, 09:26 PM
Right, I wasn't saying it's invalid, just something that I never apply. Interesting to note, I also don't believe in the tax/patrol start. So, my own list of reasons why I'd ever use a scout prophet, just get smaller. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Executor
August 5th, 2008, 09:37 PM
I always start with tax/patrol and it's the first thing I check at the start of the turn, I don't trust the automatic tax rate it never drops under 50 no matter how high the unrest , and with pangaea and cealum you can go to 200% and not get unrest, that really help get an early start!

JimMorrison
August 5th, 2008, 09:42 PM
200% without unrest? O.o With "OMG I love those crazy bird people" Caelum, no less?

< runs off to start a SP test game >

JimMorrison
August 5th, 2008, 09:50 PM
Well, test game implies if you have an awake Lady of Love as Pan, that she will reduce unrest by 10 each turn. 200 unrest was giving me 19-20 per turn, so I'm guessing she could support 140-150% safely, which is pretty neat. Of course, just being awake is a bit of a design point sink, and you're not getting an SC out of it, just more gold. I'm sure that can be leveraged nicely if part of a larger strategy though.

But Caelum, at least in EA, doesn't get Lady of Love. I tried Lady of Fortune, who did jack and nothing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif However, both got the same 19-20 unrest per turn that Sauromatia did with some random shmoo for their pretender. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Is there anything I am missing?

You mentioned that Ermor can reanimate from the start of the game. I'm Ermor in our game but Early Age Ermor is not the great undead nation of the other eras, or is there something I'm missing out on? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Executor
August 6th, 2008, 07:27 AM
I was meaning MA Ermor, but you can make a black servant a prophet in any age to reanimate but only sauromatia can reanimate longdead horseman and the giants get londead giants which is quite nice.
Oh and there is a little trick you can do with EA Ermor or really any nation, cast life after death and kill your priests with cold or poison so they become undead ( resistant to cold and poison ) and can reanimate.

War!
!

After honoring our non aggression pact through its completion, evil lanka chose to declare war on glorious peaceful helheim (me) . Lanka chose the risky strategy of dividing his armies so as to take 2 provinces per turn. While allowing helheim's lich king to claim two key victories, the strategy has paid off with lanka now seiging helheims capital. With haakon the aged and the entire faculty of svartalf university mobilised elsewhere, the research strategy and pretender aspirations of helheim lie in ruins.
But not without significant cost to the demon ogres of lanka. And in that lies opportunity. If you lie to the south or west of lanka, now is your chance to invade! This will benefit helheim but helheim is crippled anyway. But it will benefit you too! And don't think that lanka, once done with helheim, won't be looking elsewhere for conquests. Attack now, at lankas moment of weakness!

I'll be away this coming bank holiday weekend, so unless anyone objects I'll set Fridays turn to 72 hours or so.

If anyone does object then just sing out, and I'll just stale over the weekend.

Let us all join in the effort to rid the world of these annoying fish like monsters that won't stand still and fight.
Looks like they're almost dominion killed so anybody who sees his remaining dominion is advised to put a priest or two near to preach so that they would die like cowards that they are.

Oh no, Lanka is in trouble. :p

I bear no ill will to those noble Atlantians who overlooked the peninsular empire of Sauromatia as a war target.

We will however, continue spreading the word of our lord and savior, Blurblugbludd the Merciful. It is our sincere hope that this improves everyone's quality of life.

On that note, Sauromatia needs your daughters! The young god is thirsty, and we will trade many shiny pretty magic gems and bars of gold for those excess daughters who you always regretted drowning!

The deep dwellers have many neighbours, and we are happy to be getting along with them all as they go about their everyday business. With of course the obvious exception :smirk:

It is strange that we heard no cries from Lanka when they were persecuting and destroying the peaceful and friendly people from Helhiem. Maybe they only object to aggressors when it is they who are the chosen target of aggression? And I apologise for the fish-like characteristics of my fish-like warriors. But when have you ever seen a fish simply stay still waiting to be caught! It is just not in their nature :)

Many Atlantians are currently enjoying the wonderful messages of Blurblugblubb the Merciful, and they opine that the Sauromatian Lord is wise and mighty indeed. Although they regret that they have no daughters to offer as gifts of appreciation at this time. They are very sorry about this unacceptable position, and humbly seek forgiveness for not possessing the requested offerings :( Efforts will be doubled to meet future requests.

Calahan of Atlantis

ps. This is the first game I've ever had dominion problems in, and amazed how quickly it can go down! Thought (for some reason) that change was limited to +/- 1 candle per turn, but last turn just proved to me that that theory is a complete load of &*%$£!

pss. Some of my provinces have some well weird scale mixes from the various other nations. In fact I think I know every other nations scales apart from my own! Also thought that province scales would only change in the direction of the dominion in that province. But that theory is also faulty as it appears scales can change as dominion goes down in the direction of the dominion that is forcing the down-shift. Think I need to do a lot of forum/manual reading on dominion, since the things I thought I knew about it are way off the mark.

Lanka is in no trouble, with ease we defeated the tyrant of Helheim and liberated the poor people that suffered under his evil ways.
First we were amused by the pitiful efforts of the fishes that tried to invade the great Empire and subdue the good people of Lanka, but now they are just annoying, they run around the Lanka coastline avoiding fights.

Bad News,

Theres some building work going on, and I've just realised my alternate PC location won't be able to connect to the internet. I've had to switch to AI as this is the last time I'll be able to get on the net for about 10 days.

Any chance of this game switching to a 48hr timer?

There's been a great pace to the game so far, and while I don't want to be the one to slow things down, I stale turned the last turn, and only just avoided doing the same again this turn. I'm still pretty new to MP games, but as far as I can tell the vast majority of games have switched to 48hrs by turn 30 at the lastest. And while it's impressive to still be doing 24hrs at turn 42, it may be taking it's tole on some of the players.

Not sure what everyone else thinks, but I'm going to continue to struggle to keep with this game if it stays on a 24hr schedule.

Haha, I was just thinking about this, after the weekend break. We've made awesome time up to here, but it might be nice to afford a little breathing/thinking room now. I'm not so much struggling - yet - but as this is not my only game..... Well, I appreciate the extra time to think, as well as the comfort of knowing my opponents are not rushed or staling.

We invite any and all nation to rid the world of this treacherous nation.

JimMorrison
September 5th, 2008, 05:08 PM
Sieging a castle owned by Marverni is invading the Sacred (read: coveted) lands of Lanka then, is it?

I guess it's party time then. And I would also encourage all of those other people who are taking bites off of Marverni, to take advantage of Lanka's overextended position, and stake a more fruitful claim on those territories.

A shame that you would go to war over one province, and the handful of indie archers that you chose to throw at the situation. We even waited patiently until your sieging force failed and was driven off. Don't tell me you didn't see that army sitting there waiting, that I had dispatched the month Marverni's leader disappeared.

I think you wanted this war, so be it.

Anybody know what's happening with this game?

From the admin log it appears that the current silly deadline date (19th Nov) is mainly due to the llamaserver going a bit nuts on the 24th Sept, but when 'Executor' appeared briefly on the boards on the 27th Sept saying he had internet problems, he/she also added extra time. 'Executor' is the admin for the game btw.

Guess we'll just have to wait a few more days to see if 'Executor' re-appears. If not then llamabeast will need to be contacted to get/overide the admin password for the game to continue. Unless somebody out there knows something :)

How do you all feel about rolling back this turn for Calahan?

JimMorrison
October 24th, 2008, 09:59 AM
If you do a rollback, you must do the "instant" rollback. That is, when you coordinate with Calahan so that you perform the rollback, he submits his turn, and you force host before anyone sends in a revised turn.

For example, I hit my opponent with a couple of surprises this turn, and it wouldn't be fair to lose that. Also, something I tried did not go as planned, and if I changed out some gear on a couple of SCs, I could avert a defeat. So - not fair at all if either I or C'tis revised our turn, and the other didn't. And also, not even quite right if we both revise.

Calahan is late to return though, it may just be best to suspend hosting and find a sub, and hope he makes it back soon.

Executor
October 24th, 2008, 02:24 PM
I really hope Calahan will get back this weekend, it's a waste to let someone state out a game, especially someone with a winnig chance. I had a run of 8 stales in tigerstripes and it totally wrecked my game.

About Marverni. Their last fort is under siege by Bogus group, and their god is god is sieging his former capital from Atlantis. That fort was agreed to pass to Atlantis before these stales started. Through Pangaeans could take that fort, it will not kill Marverni, as their god will still be alive.
It seems finishing off Marverni depends on Atlantis decision too. And in meanwhile, that bogus buggers sit where they are and seem to not show anywhere else.

Atlantis have sieged and take Marverny capital (killing fountain of blood in process). Some turns later, Marvernian god appeared in home province (now taken by Atlantis) and routed local PD. Since then he was sitting there, sieging his own capital. At least this is what my scout told me.
Maybe remaining priests called him back?

About Atlantis - maybe crazy, but could he just made stalling, while his territories\underwater territories declared untouchable? Since all remaining active nations seem to be land-based.

He's been gone over a month..... one of his other games, he was Ashdod, was twice the size of anyone else and rolling strong, and has been handed off to someone else now, after what looked like some painful losses on his couple of stales.

It sucks that he is as large as he is, and is AWOL. I think it sucks even more that his job was sending him to a "somewhat unstable" region of the world for a week, and he's been gone over a month.
