View Full Version : How to attack stealthy astral mages?

Any idea what remote attacks or assassinations can be used to target a group of stealthy astral mages (ie. shadow seers)? I can't remember anything that can target hidden units except for mind hunt.

Seeking arrow, earth attack, disease demon

All lies.

You pretty much have to catch them with an army when they de-stealth, though I think the blanket damage spells (flames from the sky, murdering winter and possibly fires from afar) might get through stealth. I'm too lazy to check now though.

Tangential question - do astral boosters help detecting mind hunters, or is it like magic duel in that they don't count?

Micah is right, but those are all too expensive ways to attack several shadow seers who cost 180 gold. Fires from afar will probably hit only one or not even one, flames from the sky should kill half of them but it's too expensive. They attack in small groups.

They de-stealthed on my seraph, took my sickle and I want my revenge!

Cost is relative. If they can take out your expensively equipped seraph (with sickle probably over 200 gems!) you might find a few dozen gems on various mage-killing spells quite a cheap alternative.

I know some assassination spells fail on units with glamour, but I don't know whether that is the result of glamour or stealth.

Yes he was over 200 gems with the ones he just got from sickle. The problem is that no assassination spells work on stealthy units when they hide. The only things that I know that work are mind hunt (but these are astral mages) and fires from afar, flames from the sky and murdering winter which are too expensive for what they'll do.

Hiding really shouldn't be an instantaneous order.

If you have Blood magic, maybe you can send a Dream Horror to the province you know they're in? If that works, it could cause him some serious problems. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Well after they attack you they must be visible for at least that turn, mustn't they? So wait till they show themselves again and nail them.

Psycho, if hide is not an instantaneous order every stealth unit becomes useless, because he unveils and attacks when arrives in enemy province!!! ^_^

The turn you can see it is the turn you cannot attack it. Because stealth order is executed before magic phase.

Are you sure that assassination spells always fail to find stealthy units? It seems to work half the time for me.

Mind hunt does find stealthy units. Seeking arrow and earth attack surely do not.

Anyone tried VotD? (I'd test it myself if I wan't at work.) Thematically it seems more like Mind Hunt, and therefore could be worth a try.

It should work, I think.

But it might not have much effect if they haven't personally killed many units.

Stealth should probably be executed after magic phase so you have a chance at magiking those bastards. I'm just beginning to appreciate exactly how extremely powerful stealth commanders really are.

Horror seed? Leprosy?
Your own stealthers with bane venom charm or built in "Reaper" effect?

If its in your provinces, set up some watchers/call of the winds for upkeep free patrollers?

VotD doesn't work, surprisingly. Horror seed and leprosy do, but they would take too long to have effect. I guess my best bet is fires from afar.

Can you try assassins against stealthed commanders? Assassins can have trouble against mages, but the odd one gets through to the mage, against astral especially if you buff them with some cheap +MR.
