Hello, I am having problems getting Balor (the Fomoria Hero) to use his special ability 'Gaze of Death', and I am out of ideas as to what to try next. I have tried the following with his scripting, but he still seems reluctant to use his God given talents.
1. No script = He just stands there and casts spells such as Sermon of Courage, Holy Avenger, Raise Skeletons etc.
2. Attack = He simply attacks using his melee weapons, but does not use 'Gaze of Death' at all.
3. Cast spells = Same a 1 above, he simply casts the usual range of AI selected spells.
4. Stay behind troops = Exactly the same as 3.
In all the above cases there have been plenty of enemies within range (20) of 'Gaze of Death', but he simply won't use it. Not sure what else to try, so hoping someone with far more knowledge and experience than me knows how to get the best out of this guy.
Thanks in Advance for any responces.

It's a ranged attack... so script with "Fire at Closest" or "Fire at none".

NTJedi is correct. Also, keep in mind that there's no graphic for Gaze of Death, no projectile to watch flying through the air: however, if you're doing it right, you should be able to spot a big splash of blood and damage on a group of low-MR enemies!

Ha!! I can't believe I didn't see the extra 'fire' options available. Thanks for pointing out the blindingly obvious to me NT Jedi :-)
I was hoping too much that he'd use Gaze of Death as a 'pure extra' ability while still doing either melee or spell casting. Guess you really can't have your cake and eat it :-)

Sort of depends. If you give him a really nasty bow and get a Quickness on him - you'll have your cake and eat your enemy too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I like the ideas that go on in your head JimM :-) I'm sure a 'Thunder Bow' can be put to some good use combined with Balor's giant strength.

Even 2 fire bolas (one per hand), with the giant strenght and possibly Quickness, would make good fun IMHO http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Oh man that's kind of hilarious, Tifone! 8 )
If only Fomoria had access to Fire magic, natively. In most cases though the Thunder Bow will be best option, and it can be pretty sick in the hands of a Fomorian King, especially with Quickness on him.
And if you're going for pure carnage factor, don't forget the Spirit Helm! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
(Bottle of Living Water, and Bag of Winds optional.)

Nice shout Tifone. I've never really looked at any of the items that have their range linked to strength to be honest, but I guess 28 strength opens up a load of options. And I have always wanted to test those Fire Bolas out!! Could be tricky getting hold of them though, since fire is not an easy to come-by path for Fomoria.

Probably, but I was just opening up a funny possibility - with the easy reachable boots of quickness, that would be 4 bolas per turn (sent very far for the streng and very precisely for the equally easy to reach Eye of Aiming, Aim, Eagle Eyes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif btw do they stack? I think they do) and 2 gazes of death I think. Something very close to a machinegun ^_^
About fire access, I think it's not a big issue, maybe he already got it in the pretender for a bless, but I think he can even find some fire mage around easily, don't forget he's in EA and bolas are just F1 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I thought Formoians only have one eye... so the eye of aiming would !??*& (i.e. you would regret it) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Ahah it's true, I was just thinking about their air magic, didn't actually think about that ^^ Still Aim and Eagle Eyes should do the work ^^
(Oh Ming, you made me remember about the first time i discovered the eye of aiming, and tried to put TWO on a commander XD )

I believe Eagle Eyes and Aim (and Wind Guide) don't stack, sadly!

I would be willing to bet they put in special code to take away his Gaze attack if he lost his only eye, too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif They're crafty like that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Balor's pretty bad-***... just keep him away from Firbolg Snipers w/ Eyes of Aiming and Vision's Foe. :p

Yes the Fomorian Giants do only have one eye...much to my dismay when trying to use a fake eye on one recently. FAIL.

You could use him with a Black Bow so the MR attack is against a feebleminded opponent.

Hello everyone,
I have a question about the ability "gaze of death". Does it work on undeads ? It appears that it doesn't : yesterday my longdead horsemen appeared immune to the multiple gazes of death of a pack of 6 Catoblepas, despite their low MR (10) and low HP (4). They just slaughtered the poor "terrifying" beasts...
Is anyone able to confirm this ? What tags give immunity to gaze of death ? Undead ? Lifeless ? Demon ? Other ?
Last question, do we know precisely oh much is the roll of GoD against MR ? Is it the default 12 ?
Thank you for your answers.

I'm not sure but I would guess it's the "lifeless" tag that gives immunity.
