The New Fangled Avatar Factory & Bar

Hello Everyone,

It appears that there would be some interest in my churning out some new 'larger' Avatars for this well loved Community. I'll make a bunch of my own choosing, but if you have a request (or better yet, a link to an image you would like me to run through my factory) just drop a post in this thread.

This is gonna be fun, buckle down the barrels of brew and you'll find extra fluffy pillows and padding in the overhead compartments.

Please do not pull the handle clearly marked "DO NOT PULL" in big bold letters. (that will cause the factory to do an emergency stop, and we do not want that to happen.. last time it took ages to get the machine running again.)

You know, back in high school, we had a program to work with called the WinAli Assembler to learn the Assembler language. In one of my good days I modified the program to include new text, buttons and background images with a resource editor, then uploaded it to all the lab computers the day before summer vacation. I went for a mock Duke Nukem 3D style. The program icon to launch the program was an atomic cloud picture, which I got from the then-popular WinNuke program, with Muhammad Ali in front (hence WinAli). The picture of yours reminds me very much of that, it looks pretty much exactly like it.

That sounds like a permissions problem. In the testing phase my avatar would not show no matter what I tried. Talk to Mindi about it.

I noticed that the dancing lizard is showing up as your profile pic. The profile picture and the avatar are two separate things. The profile pic is changed with "Edit Profile Picture" the avatar can be changed in "Edit Avatar" which shows up under "Settings & Options" in your User CP. You may already be aware of this and it may be some kind of permissions issue (as Edi suggested), but I thought it would be worth mentioning just in case.

Try this:
Right click on the image that DG posted and select "Save Image As" and save it to your desktop. Then go into your User CP and into the Edit Avatar section. Select the "Use Custom Avatar" option button and then hit the "Browse" button. Navigate to your desktop and select the image that you saved there previously. Then click on "Save Changes".

Tried that already, more than once. According to my Paint program, atleast, it's just a picture of Shrapnel's banner. I'll try putting it into my Avatar set up though, to see if Paint's just masking it.

Here's an Idea,.. if you got a paint program that can do the following..

1) Load a .png image with alpha channel
2) Crop and/or resize an image (to 64x64 size)
3) Overlay a .png on the resized/cropped 64x64 image
4) Save As.. .gif (with optimized pallet & set color RGB 255,0,255 to transparent)

Then using this Template..

You too can make a custom Avatar. Try if if you can and see if it works. Be sure to post your results here so we can all see. If you want to make a 'batch' of avatars and post them here, Mindi can decide if they are worthy of being moved to the default selection of avatars.

Ahh, but that part we figured out.....we were having a debate of which kind of kitty, lol. I know it's not the fluffy type that is in our house...although their claws sometimes feel like it...and we were uncertain as a couple different ones seem possible. Maybe we should just go with kitty...meow.

It's a black panther-as in that particular mutation-looks like an American bobcat.

They're the only ones I know of with those long faces and small ears, and that long of fur. Hard to tell from just the face, though.

I'm going to have to say that's a tiger. No other large cat has striping like that. The odd coloration has only 2 explanations - either it's really a Liger that is exceptionally gothic, or someone had some fun retouching the image.

I would call it "Black Tiger", if you were fishing for a title for the avatar database.

The eyes seem slightly too close together to me, and the nose seems slightly too small, to be a tiger.

And American bobcats do have stripes on their faces.

-but heavily photoshopped. But scrutinizing this very closely (after a couple of hard ciders), I am compelled to think this is the actual picture that was the base for the image that avatar was based on. Whew, what a mouthful! And a mindful. That word is so awesome as a noun. <3

JimMorrison, Yup, that is the image I found to make that peticular avatar. Nice catch, I generally do google image searches for like "Wild Animals" or "Big Cats" or when wanting something more specific, "Tiger", "Panther" etc.

David, if you feel like playing around with these (http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?t=97981) and these (http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?t=119241), there's a lot of material for avatars. The first set needs to be resized to 80x80 (some are not perfect squares, but 100x??? or ???x100, so need resizing so 80 is max dimension) and the second set needs to be resized from 80x100 to 64x80.

These avatars are all from the graphics of the old Age of Wonders game by Triumph Studios and just this morning I got permission from Lennart Sas, one of their top guys, to use them in avatar galleries on forums. I specifically asked if it was okay to use them here at Shrapnel and he said yes, so they're good to go if Shrapnel wants them into an official gallery.

You're welcome. I know AoW is not and never has been a Shrapnel product, but it'd be a shame to let them go to waste because we do have permission to use them. :)

And the forum is a Shrapnel product and it doesn't hurt to give people choices, no? The Dom3 community at least has a large number of people who played the original AoW and its sequel and who have migrated to Dominions.

I actually made all of the 100x100 ones around late 2006 for the stardestroyer.net forums and the hero portrait stuff in February this year.

So even if all of them don't make it, no matter. If some are considered good and accepted, I'll be happy. :)

My current avatar is a downsized version of that, it's another one of the AoW pics. A 64x64 or 80x80 version with that frame would go very nicely and then I'd have a shrapnelified version, all shiny and official looking. I'm not sure which size would be better, so if you did both, I would very much appreciate it.

Annette, I have been trying to find a larger version of your avatar with no success. Was it part of the old forums 'cannon' avatars that got installed with the software in ages gone past? As you have seen, I did manage to find a few old 'Recreuiting posters' to make avatars, but still have not found the one you have. Do you know if it's a USO poster? Rockwell painting? or just some obscure war poster and that pose has been cropped from it? I'd really like to find a larger version of your avatar.

Its not so much Annette being a copyright nazi as Shrapnel being a copyright nazi. Company liability tends to override personal choices. What they do on their own desktop might be quite different than what they do on a publicly viewable server.

From what Ive seen, alot of this stuff is not a problem until someone openly declares where it came from. :)

Ed you should apologize to Annette for any reference to her as a nazi. copyright or other. It's just plain rude and if I could I'd spank you. there was no call for rudeness on your part, she was just stating the company policy.

There is an 'extreme' solution.. if I provide a 'link' to every source image I made an avatar out of 'AND' the Avatars themselves could be connected to the 'link' then it falls under the heading of advertizing.. you are using 'their' graphics to point people to 'their' site. it's 100% acceptable practice on the net. No court would or could condem a fan for promoting their fav image.. if things were 'extreme' on the other end.. I managed to violate 42 copyrights by making new icons for the 'bookmarks' using their 'favicons' or graphics from their sites. (without express written consent from each of these sites)

Personally I'm not worried, I'm not the paranoid type,.. but it just takes one 'lawsuit' to make anyone a little more paranoid. Nobody is using these avatars to make money, nobody is profiting from these, if anything it generates interest when someone sees an avatar and they delve deeper to reveal it's source. 'Nobody' goes to 'Any' forum.. sees a nice avatar image and says/thinks "Gee this is a nice avatar, I think I'll show my aprieciation by spending money here." lol.

I say "Chill people, it's a non-issue!". I'll make a few of the AoW avatars, and leave the decision weather or not to move any of them to the 'default selections' up to shrapnel. That is the best solution.. you all get access, and shrapnel cannot be responsible for links to my photobucket account.

While OOP you can still find it for sale. In fact, I actually just found the original game for sale on GoGamer. Are the developers seeing any money from those sales? Probably not, which is why they're okay with it. Whoever still retains the publishing IP rights though...that may be a different situation.
Hell, Tim can't even do anything with 101st even though Empire (now owned by someone else I believe) isn't doing anything with it, and probably never will.

I did lose my link to my avatar, Balbarian, and found it in the photo album you posted. Thank you! Quite frankly, David, I've had it so long I don't remember where it came from I think it was a stock Shrapnel avatar from 2000. Ban you, Ed? I hardly think so! I'm not sure anyone has ever called me a forum nazi before... in reality, the first thing that would happen if we violated copyright is that the copyright holder would ask us to remove the offending whatever. We're talking about avatars, and it's pretty unlikely Disney or the USFO or whoever would come here and be alarmed by what they see. But in principle, as software publishers, we are extremely sensitive to violating other company's copyright because we are sensitive to our own copyright protection. That would be setting a double standard, wouldn't it?

No need to blow this out of proportion, and it's not just a matter of permissions. I just think if someone wants to create a bunch of cool AoW avatars and has permission to do so, that would be a great independent project. But we will shy away from officially hosting it. I've said it before, and I'll say it again...our developers have hired us to promote their games. That's why we're here.

I've talked about this with Annette and I'm going to host any AoW avatars David may make on my personal webspace so if someone wants to use any of them, they can do so.

It's not a big deal and there is nothing strange about Shrapnel's position as such. If this were an independent gaming site instead of an actual game publishing company, it'd be somewhat different. As things are now, with the permission from Triumph, there is no possible way Shrapnel or anyone here can get in trouble over this, even when the origin of the images has been stated and they have been posted as such a massive block.

Here's an Idea,.. if you got a paint program that can do the following..

1) Load a .png image with alpha channel
2) Crop and/or resize an image (to 64x64 size)
3) Overlay a .png on the resized/cropped 64x64 image
4) Save As.. .gif (with optimized pallet & set color RGB 255,0,255 to transparent)

Then using this Template..

Annette, looks like you missed s step.. you saved as a .jpg not a gif and as such could not turn the pink corners transparent.. No worries, I grabbed your sample and gave it 'ye old treatment' added a color background, gave the guy some 'shadows' to enhance his beauty, errr I mean his rugged gruffy look befitting of Sarge. ;)

David, if you are inclined to try your hand with Dominions 3 graphics, you can download every single unit sprite from this thread. (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=39977) It has both normal and attack sprites for every unit as of version 3.17. And since there were 2082 units as of version 3.17, there's quite a bit to choose from... :D

Edi, While unit sprites are abundant, I usualy try to make avatars with things like 'event pics' GUI items etc. If the Dom3 fans want to hash out a ton of Dom3 avatars they are more than welcome. Personally I think it would be overkill.. I avoided this type thing in the Space Empires threads way back when I made over 1000 avatars.

If people have their favorites and want an avatar, they can post the source image here and I'll pprocess it.

Anything Dom3-themed would probably be sprite-related, since it has a very limited number of other graphics.

You have done an amazing job with all the other stuff and I really like the style of the avatars you do. It's phenomenal. You put a crapload of work into it and I truly appreciate it. My own tinkering with the AoW images to get the unit portrait and hero portrait galleries is small potatoes compared to you, but it has given me a picture of just how much work is involved.

There's a couple of the Dom3 sprites that could be good fodder. I'll take a look and post them later. :)

Here's a silly little avatar using DG's "S" Shrapnel logo icon that he posted in the other thread. Seems that Shrapnel blue goes well with Ulmish blue. :)

some people seem to be 'resizing' the 64x64 overlay (or their avatars) and the result is some weird artifacting and otherwise frame distortions. I am not planning to make any 80x80 avatars, but here is a 'Clean' 80x80 Overlay .png with alpha channel. Use it at your leisure.

Hi Dedas, it didn't need much fixing,.. I just slipped a background under it,. slightly shifted the butterfly, resized, placed the overlay, saved as gif, loaded it into gif movie gear to set the transparency, saved, uploaded to my photobucket account and posted it here.. a simple 5 min opperation.

lol, sometimes a good fitting background is staring you in the face. LoL

.. Actually I did a google image search for "blue wallpaper" I used one of the thumbnails that appeared on the first page of results.

It probably is a windows wallpaper, weather or not it's the default one I have no idea.. I don't have a wallpaper on my comp, and iirc way back when I installed windows XP Home I think the default wallpaper was green grass hills and a blue cloudy sky.
