Looking to start a new game. Willing to play anywhere any age, any map, with however many players are willing to join within the next few days. Will host on LlamaServer. Maybe even a random game, randomized by an outside party (my roommate). We will vote for an age, a map and whether we play random nations.

Players:

1. MadFrancis/Marignon - Submitted
2. Apsophos/Agartha - Submitted
3. James243/T'ien Ch'i - Submitted
4. Tichy/Shinuyama - Submitted
5. Jazzepi/Abysia - Submitted

We're up to eight. Shall we recruit some more or is everyone okay with eight? We can wait for more peeps if you all want or we can close it. In anycase we should start thinking about which age and map we are going to play, as well as whether we shall be playing random nations.

Ershalim

Personally, as I'm not terribly good at anything, random suits me fine. 8 people seems like a good enough start as any. Late Age seems to be pretty popular at the moment. So buck tradition and go Early? *Shrugs*

Just registered. First post, hurray.

If you're willing to go to nine or need an alternate please count me in. Was looking for a game to start. Any map, age, or nation is fine with me. I'm too new to know what's what.

That's one vote, for EA Random Nations. Anyone else?

Also I am going to keep adding people to the game list ... if we end up playing with only eight than we will just have alts or subs. If not we can always play a larger map. Either way is fine by me.

My vote is random everything except the map, as I'm not really familiar with any nation or age yet :)

I agree that we shouldn't use a straight random map -- they tend not to be balanced out of the box in terms of number and quality of neighbors for start positions. There are a bunch of maps now that people have lavished attention on.

I'm fine with any age, and random or semi-random nation selection. I think players should be allowed a small opt-out list, or be able to state certain preferences (like no water).

Psycho
August 23rd, 2008, 06:04 PM
The only thing that is important to me is to have a map that is visually pleasing. It's best to play on a random map, but since I don't believe anyone would like to mess around with adjusting starting positions, we could take some standard map take can fit 11 players like Cradle.

I vote for random nation assignement with an opt-out list as well. Regarding age, I vote it not be EA, since my two MP games so far were EA.

Maybe we could have opponent-chosen (anonymously) pretender chassis? (more madness, yay)

Also, should we use any mods? CBM? Random mods from a list?

Or should we roll some dice to decide things to be randomized and make this a randomly random game?

More random madness!

Jazzepi

I can generate a map as long as I know the number of water nations we're going to have.

Generally I do 15 provinces per player.

MadFrancis

1.Marignon
2.Mictlan
3.T'ien Ch'i
4.Agartha
5.Abysia
6.Caelum
7.Vanheim
8.R'lyeh
9.Bandar Log
10.Shinuyama
11.Ashdod

This is a MA randomly generated list of nations. Any objections? I was thinking Cradle would be a good map for 11 players. I'm also open to random maps. If any person wants to opt out of their randomly generated nation we can allow one chance to be randomly assigned a new nation per player.

Yea? Nay?

Tichy

Im leery on the opponent chosen pretender chassis, as for mods Ive never played with anything but Worthy Heros, but am willing to give anything a go.

As for random randomness, we could always roll a die for things such as independants strength, site frequency, gold and resource modifiers, starting provinces and such.

Ooh, that would make me R'yleh? The nutty fishes. I can work with that. If we do opponents making pretender chassis things, we'd need some kind of quality control. Some arbiter to assure that they weren't useless for whatever race they were made for... I'm not entirely sure that'd be worth the effort, but it could be fun.

Not absolutely opposed, but I wouldn't mind one reroll...

I'm just a beginner player, so playing Shinuyama might turn out a negative experience as it really is the last nation I'd pick :(

Shall we set a deadline for Tuesday evening, say 03:00 AM GMT to start. Any trades must be made before then, and Pretenders sent in.

We'll play Cradle.

# Starting Provinces: 3
Ind. Strength: 7
Site Freq.: 35
$ Multiplier: 175
Resource Multiplier: 225
Supply Multipler: 75
Random Eevnts: Rare
Score graphs Enabled
Hall of Fame: 5
Research: Standard

The above is a random make-up of the game conditions. We can use these or just go default if people want.

Also, CBM or no? Random die roll says no, but either way I'd sort of like to at least use Worthy Heroes.

Ershalim

Modses tend to make things more complicated. I think if we're already playing with so much random it'll already be 'new' enough to keep things interesting. It's up to you, though. I'm fine either way.

If it is up to me I'd tend to agree that the randomness of the settings will make the game different enough as it is.

Psycho
August 25th, 2008, 02:22 AM
I am strongly opposed to this randomness of settings. I would like to see everything on default if there isn't a good reason for changing it. I've seen people sometimes change indy strength or site frequency, but not things like no. of provinces, random events or multipliers. This kind of settings favor nations who have heavily armored troops and as such won't be recruiting many of them. Also it favors misfortune, so taking luck in your pretender design would hardly be a viable option.

Random nations is one thing, but lets not get crazy with randomness. I believe it's better if we voted about changing any of these.

46852
August 25th, 2008, 03:48 AM
I agree with Psycho, random multipliers will unbalance the game a lot, even more than random nations.

Sounds great.

Put my vote down for {DEFAULT} settings. Or maybe re-roll an over-under where its either +1 click to a setting, Default, or -1 click. I was in the IRC channel and the consensus was alot of games were using so-called "CBM" but they said plenty of vanilla games too, so I am somewhat impartial on mods. How big a difference do they make on gameplay? I beat around some AI as Bandar Log and I am looking forward to the game.

Jazzepi
August 25th, 2008, 04:19 AM
Personally I don't think you should mess with any of the settings like indies, *definitely* not staring provinces, resources multipliers, how common the events are, etc etc.

If we took the multipliers that you have listed there it would be a huge boon to resource intense nations, like MA Abysia, and I'd be fine with them.

Im having problems with the map. I am trying to have the whole map no start with the exception of 11 balanced starting positions. But when I test it out withh 11 human players the distribution is all wacky and some nations get placed ontop of others.

Anyone know why, or can anyone link me to a map editing tutorial?

Xietor
August 25th, 2008, 10:45 PM
I may be mistaken, but you may be limited, when using llamaserver, to the maps he has.
The reason i say that is I asked him if I could play a game using a map he did not have at a later date. and he said when i was ready to start the game, and it was tweaked the way i want it, he would add it to his list.

I think the reason he limited the maps was the amount of downloading involved. In any event, he will be back tomorrow and you can pm him then.

Gandalf has a server that is up and running, and you likely can play with your map on his server. That is tcp/ip however.

If you don't mind, MadFrancis, I'd like to drop off this game. I noticed there's another game starting where I can play Vanheim, the same nation I play in my first game.

I just started to think I might not have the time to get familiar with a new nation yet.

So if it's ok, could you just delete my freshly sent pretender?

If it's too much of a trouble or messes up the game somehow, I can try to hang in the game too, no problem.

It's not the losing that I'm shunning, it's just the fact that I don't have the time to get familiar with another nation yet. Mictlan would've otherwise been an interesting nation to play... But still, when you got nine-to-five work and wife and kids at home, you don't really have the time to delve into nordic myths and the blood gods of the Aztecs all at the same time ;)

Really sorry to have dropped out of the game, but I'm glad I made the decision before the game started!

A small request first: Please could people not explicitly post any e-mail addresses here? If you do, they will be picked up by spambots, and the address will start receiving spam. It's quite unfortunate. One way of getting round it is to write the address in a "munged" form, e.g. pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net.

The server's fully functional again now - hopefully your pretender is now visible Psycho. Everything should be smooth running from here.

Grudgebringer - I think your e-mails aren't getting through. It sounds like you're doing everything correctly.
1) Try e-mailing yourself. Does it arrive?
2) E-mail your pretender file to me. Then I can check everything is okay.

I have noticed I am noew getting about 8 spams every time I log oN....(sigh) my bad!!!

I e-mailed myself and got it immediately back.

I am e-mailing my pretender in agian, it is Vanheim and I will mail it now at 8:45 AM CST (I don't know GMT sorry)/

If you have any ideas let me know because obviously I can post on here....

As I said my first pretender to the original game went thru.

Now I DID upgrade to 3.20 but it wouldn't take it before that. I also have my mods on and CBM is on...could that be the cause?

Thanks for all you do...your always gracious.

Ashdod
Agartha
Bandar Log
Caelum
T'ien Ch'i

Mictlan
R'lyeh

These nations have a pretender sent in. The name of the game is in the thread title 'MadCradle2'. The game was deleted, so anyone who hasn't sent in a second pretender needs to now. I will set the game to automatic start so that as soon as the last pretender is submitted the game will start.

GrudgeBringer, don't post your e-mail address! You will get spam like crazy.

However, I have just realised that you have ended up using gmail instead of kc.rr.com because I told you to send your pretender from gmail, forgetting that the server would remember that address. Okay... changed. I will have it resend your turn to your kc.rr.com address.

In future you can send turns from gmail with impunity. The next turn will still come back to your kc.rr.com address.

What makes you say that? I play for fun, not to win at all costs. Why don't you hop your birds through my provinces and take them yourself?

I won't be touching Vanheim's lands while he is gone out of respect, that's not the way I roll.

Psycho
September 15th, 2008, 07:39 PM
Sorry if that came out wrong, it wasn't anything offensive directed at you or TC player. I just meant that one of you two (or both) will have an easier time with one opponent.

I know I would take those provinces and I don't see how attacking a nation gone AI is playing to win at all costs. I hope that doesn't make me dishonest.

Tichy
September 15th, 2008, 07:58 PM
Oops, that's right -- sorry GrudgeBringer.

Psycho -- going AI is one thing, and up for grabs unless someone else has right of conquest (i.e. if the player went AI at the end of a losing war, the winning player rightfully views another player eating up the remaining provinces without permission as a hostile act.)

Foodstamp was talking about not horning in on him while he's unavoidably staling. If Van decides to stay with us and not AI, I think we should all go hands off of him till he gets back. (Easy for me to say, I don't even know where Van is.)

Foodstamp

GrudgeBringer

I didn't want to ask for an extension that long as I would not want to have to wait 5 days (and in a fairly new game at that).

I always try to be up front with my intentions where some would just bail on the game.

I wanted to do what was best for the game and all the remaining players.

I am not at war with anyone and actually I got off to a slow start so this isn't going to help.

However, I am not one to quit easily but I also don't want to go 50 turns trying to just catch up.

I appreciate the Honor among you for not attacking a person who has to stale by cicumstance and not happenstance.

You tell me what you want me to do thats best for the game and I will do it.

BUT, tell me by tomorrow night as if I don't hear from anyone I will AI it.:(

Foodstamp
September 15th, 2008, 11:29 PM
My vote is for you to keep playing. You are not at war with anyone, and I am pretty sure the other players will agree not to attack you this early in the game. When you get back you will be in a weakened position, but that should give you a good excuse to play for fun and try some wacky stuff.

If you go AI your kingdom will be pretty easy pickings for your closest neighbor and may possibly give us an advantage over the other players.

I was not talking about horning in on him while he's unavoidably staling. I assumed he would go AI, since even if he finds a sub, he wouldn't be able to switch him over.

That said, I have no problem with waiting for GB, or letting him stale if he's not attacked, whatever works for the others.

It's OK to give you a turn to set your defenders in place, but don't use the extra turn of Rlyeh staling to take over more of his provinces. I fought with AI Tien Chi all the time. I didn't attack while he was staling.

So, we're done. Tichy, you were a good opponent, but my gem income was just too much. Having three gem globals for such a long time was unexpected. Besides what the graphs showed, I had over 200 clams which I forged in my banefire forges. I also wished twice per turn for gems for quite some time now (when I weren't wishing for seraphs and chayots). And the long period of peace allowed me to accumulate over 40k gold and over 4k gems in my stash before this war began. I didn't even begin to spend any of that. My power was just too overwhelming.

As for the game, after the initial war with Agartha, who fought well, but was caught between me and Bandar, I found banefire forges in a province next to Agartha capital and enchantresses in another of his provinces. So, I just sat back and used my big water income to forge all the clams I could. I used wishing for gems as a way to alchemize other gems into water with a 1 for 1 ratio (and later I did it for nature gems for GoRing Tartarians). Graphs showed I was number three all along and I waited for the war between you (Shin) and Mictlan, which never happened. In the meantime I grew in power and tried to keep up with you in the number of provinces. So I teleported to the other end of the map to attack TC. And when you finally went after Rlyeh, I convinced Mictlan that we must react against you.

I've never had a game enter such a late stage stage before. In the end I was ridiculously powerful. Even a fight with you seemed like a walk in the park.

Yeah, I had nowhere near that kind of power. I was sitting on about a dozen clams and five or six bloodstones. I was wishing for things about once every three turns.

I, also, was waiting for a war between me and Mictlan...I would have won that one...

As soon as I saw you throwing dozens of remote assassination spells and ghost riders at me every turn, I realized just how many orders of magnitude higher your resources were than mine. I could mount about three or four of those spells per turn.

Will you declare the victory on the hall of fame, or should I submit your name?

I had capability for 8 ghost riders, 2 flames from the sky, 7 earth attacks, 6 disease demons, 3 mind hunts and countless seeking arrows (which I didn't use) per turn. This is without counting seraphs, chayots and the pretender.

I'll post in the HoF.
