View Full Version : LlamaServer down for 48 hours

Everyone using the LlamaServer should have got an e-mail anyway, but...

While I transfer the LlamaServer to a new and hopefully permanent home, it'll be down for the next 48 hours. Sorry about the inconvenience. Once it's back up it should hopefully be super-reliable.

Thanks Llama. I don't know how to set up one of those contribution things but considering almost every Dom game I have played for the last year has been on llamaserver, which continues to get better and better through your efforts, I would gladly contribute some upkeep if someone more tech savy sets up a way to pay.

Cheers,
DC

Yes, thanks a lot.
It was said many times but there may never be too much thanking for what you do for us:)

Llama,

Will you be updating to 3.20 at the same time?

Thanks Llama, I'm new to the community and I am amazed by what you do for it. Plus, a few few days wait is no big deal.

I would also like to donate for the new server if you accept :D

hi llama

you are, of course, the best :)

but I was hoping for some clarification as to ongoing games... atm, i'm just waiting for the server situation to be cleared up and not sending in any turns. I take it, that when the server is back, there will be some amount of time to submit before any hosting? I could myself submit to the old email, but I would worry that others wouldn't and are, like me, patiently attending some sort of notification :)

Dear all,

Many thanks for the kind comments. I think, perhaps, I may sort out some kind of donation option for the LlamaServer soon, just to help cover the costs of the server and so on. I am going to run out of funding for my PhD in 6 months, and very probably won't have finished by then, so I guess I may become more money-conscious! But in fact the upkeep costs are very low, so I will definitely keep the LlamaServer running indefinitely in any case.

archaeolept - before I restart the server I'll postpone all games by 48 hours, so it will effectively be as if those two days didn't exist. The e-mail (and web) addresses will stay the same, and in fact any e-mail you've sent in the last two days should be received normally. So hopefully everything will be reasonably seamless.

You're the man llama. I would most definitely put a couple bucks in.

PhDwell, see, there's your problem

but at least recognizing the issue is the first step in any possible solution. I recommend the knife ;)

Llama, first I want to join in thanks for the awesome work you're doing with your server.

Then I'd like to ask a few Qs, just for clarification.
1. Just to confirm, server is updated to 3.20 so all players should do so as well. right?

2. 8 hours ago I got this mail from the server:
Okay, the LlamaServer's back up and working again. Predictably, there were a raft of unexpected issues but I think it's working reasonably well now. The remaining glitch is that the website doesn't seem to be updating reliably - hopefully this will become stable and happy shortly.

I postponed all games for a full 72 hours in the end (at one point it looked like I would have to give up for today and leave if off for another day, hence the extra 24 hours). So no games should be hosting imminently, and hopefully everything will be fairly smooth.

Thanks for your patience everyone, hope the frustration of having to wait to see your battles hasn't been killing you!
So should we expect to see the games hosting on coming Tuesday?

3. One of the games I'm participating in, Victoria, has hosted Yesterday, is it a glitch or is the turn I got the real thing?- I'm asking b/c game is in advanced stage and I'd hate to repeat doing the turn.

Hi Wraithlord,

1. Yep, server is updated, so go ahead and update yourself. Well, unless you are also in some network MP games, in which case you should probably keep an un-patched copy until your host for those games has also patched.

2. Just check the website, www.llamaserver.net . It's updating properly now.

3. It's not a glitch, it hosted because all the 2h files were received.

I sent in a modified turn, but never got an email stating that the server recieved my turn. How can I be sure it did?

llamabeast

If in doubt, send it again.

Great.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. It never ceases to amaze me how good is that server of yours.

Best of luck in Phd. I once considered treading this path but then came family, career and dominions :D

I very much hate to be bothering you again llama. But I resent the turn and still no notification. I'm trying to send the turn for Ermor in the game Stasis. Is there anyway to make sure it was overwritten?

Thanks again for putting up with me.

llamabeast

No, an updated 2h file for Ermor hasn't been received.

Hmm. Maybe try e-mailing it directly to me? And maybe to yourself as well, to check it's sending okay?

Ok I just sent an email to me, you, and the llamaserver in one go. Let's see what happens here.

I got mine, so it seems to be sending alright.

And of course there just cant be enough thanks for the master lama for all his efforts.

A troubling though had just crossed my mind.
Given that server was upgraded to 3.20 and given that most games haven't hosted yet what happens to all the guys that sent their turns before the llamaserver went down and so in-fact have sent 3.17 turns.

llama, what is your recommendation?- Do you think a warning email should be sent to players to tell to make sure to UL 3.20 turns?

llamabeast
September 1st, 2008, 04:42 AM
No WraithLord, that will work fine. Players are fine to send either a 3.17 or a 3.20 turn.

Hmm, well I guess there seem to be sufficient reports of e-mail frustration to imply it's not working as well as might be hoped. I have two possible plans for improving the situation. Unfortunately, a 5-minute attempt at each failed (computers never do what you want), but I know they're both possible, so I will have a go at them tonight. In the meantime, apologies for any frustration.

E-mail seems quite mysterious. Obviously it's working seamlessly for the majority of players, but for a few it's being stubborn. I've no idea why.

BigDisAwesome - I received your e-mail, but the LlamaServer didn't. Very odd indeed. Anyway, I forwarded it on and it received it straight away from me. So you can at least rest assured that your updated turn finally got through.

Awesome.

Doubly so since so of my 3.17 turns have already hosted.

Thanks llama. That sure doesn't make much sense.

Email is definetly mysterious. I still havent gotten it completely where I want it on my servers. A person could make a whole job out of understanding and setting up emails.

But if I can help out, feel free to ask. And lch has some background on the subject also.

Okay, I have significantly improved the e-mail system. Hopefully it will work well for people now. Let me know if you still have problems.

Gandalf - thanks for the offer! If I come up with any more technical questions I will be sure to ask you.

If you want a redundant backup system, I can create you a mailbox on my system. You can set your email addresses to duplicate to that address. That way they can just store there in case you need them.

Thanks Gandalf, but I already have just such a system set up with a gmail account. It has come in handy more than a few times when I have screwed things up!

Server is working fine for me now.
