May be of some interest here. ;)

kongregate has some great web games. I personally like Monster's Den 2. It's completely addictive for like 30 hours, then you totally get bored with it.

Sonny is also quite fun.

I actually found this game on Newgrounds first (although which first recieved it I'm unsure of), but I'm fairly sure Sonny is pretty much everywhere now.

But this was fun until I got frustrated with drawing the exact wrong cards I needed to win the game while the enemy piled up card after card that I couldn't dispel or resist. I eventually gave up and left. The multiplayer option the creator is considering sounds like great fun though.

I really like Monster's Den too, but it couldn't hold my attention forever. I'm surprised at how mediocre Kongai is considering it's their flagship game. I figured their thought process was the game was going to be so good that people would play games they didn't even like just to get the cards. But I can't imagine that happening.

Also played Sonny and Mardek and all those games when you don't have enough time to finish a Dom3 turn. ;)

Ah good, it lives! I sent out the link to the Newgrounds version this week only to get a bunch of "Where's the game?" responses. Checking it out Newgrounds had killed it!

That was a lot of fun! Not nearly hard enough, but fun, nonetheless. Once I'd got past the Deep Ones, I don't think I lost a single round. But definitely an enjoyable 2 hours :)

If you're a sucker for tower defense games (like me), I found GemCraft to be fairly entertaining. Colorful explosions get me every time. >.>

I love tower defense games. Gem Tower Defense is another good one-similar to GemCraft, but with a somewhat different play.

I found gem tower defense to be somewhat strange and not as action packed as desktop tower defense (if you avoid sending the critters back and forth by placing and replacing a block).

Yeah it is kind of oddball. I wish regular gems in it were upgradeable, instead of just downgradeable. As it is, it's really difficult to get some of the more powerful gems, so I end up just building malachites, star rubies, silver and (occasionally) jade towers in Extreme mode. Considering that there's about 16 different tower types, maybe more, that becomes a little monotonous after the 30th round-not to mention, makes Extreme mode exponentially harder to beat.

Desktop TD is pretty awesome, I never understood why people resort to juggling.

Dammit, now just thinking about it, I can't get the *pock* *pock* *pock* sounds of Squirts out of my head.

I've spent a few hours on necronomicon today. It was quite entertaining for a while, but afterwards I got the cheap-game-feeling thaqt I had spent too much time on it. :)

Fortunately I've caught a cold, so I don't feel bad doing nothing useful. Besides, I've spent plenty more hours on making a gozu, a mezu and a tatsu.

The tatsu is annoyingly slow to make. I'm rather bored with scales by now, since I make them pixel by pixel to make them look at all like scales.

Also it is disturbingly close in color to the gold-painted wooden or plastic dragons of the average chinese resturant :)

What level did you get to? At level 20, you "win", and get that warm fuzzy feeling of meaningless accomplishment. \:happy:/

I am not sure what all of those things are that you mentioned, but they all sound like food to me, so a Chinese restaurant seems like a good place to find them. :p

Are these for that Yomi polishing? I am excited just at the thought of deliciously refried nations! <3

We have a really authentic Chinese restaurant about an hour's drive away. Every so often I go there to get my pickled pig intestine fix.

I quit at lvl 16, but resumed my game later on and finished it. Was a bit surprised, but quite content. Now I don't need to play it anymore :)

I intended to make some Jomon stuff, but I will probably not be able to restrain myself, so it will cover all eras and to some extent TC as well. Ox-heads and horse-faces have a chinese heritage, and are probably more common in chinese myth and stories than in japanese dito.

The new horse-face will probably make me do another celestial soldier of less demonic appearance, since they are currently similar in looks and the horse-face is a guardian of hell rather than a celestial being.

Sounds great to me!

Kristoffer, are you at all familiar with the movie "The Great Yokai War"? I haven't seen it yet, but it's supposed to be excellent. Probably of interest to a lot of people on these boards.

I find that having closure on flash games (well any games, but flash games are so insidious) really helps inspire a state of well being. A state of well being you had before you played, but that you lost until you completed the game. :p

I'm so excited to see updated Jomon. O.O They're one of my favorite nations! Now the wait for the next patch is already unbearable. :p

I thought the Japanese were fond of beast-men as well, or is that a more modern convention for them?

Fox and cat spirits are popular, but I think they were also brought over from the Chinese.

The problem with Gemcraft is that the best strategy is to just explode low level gems constantly. The first 3rd of the game can be beaten without putting a single gem in a tower. Very good idea, but not well designed.

Level 30? O.o I thought Yithian Scholar was a bit anticlimactic. But at level 20, it told me I won, and ended the game..... These last several days have been mighty odd.

I think things are still being changed.. but it does mean you have to do it again :D

But there are still over 6000 games on Kongregate that I've never even tried yet! :p

You can beat the 'regular' game without juggling. The '10K Fun' mode, however, is essentially impossible to beat without juggling; death is otherwise certain ca. level 88, essentially. By that time, bosses have several hundred thousand HP, and you run into a heavy flyer wave at the same time high-hp spawns are distracting your squirt towers.

Did they finally fix it to be potentially defeatable?

The last time I played it, Squirts alone were insufficient for the fliers by wave 17 I think it was.

88 was at that time, never breached by anyone who didn't juggle. Even then, they had to use like 2 Squirts (or some favored a Dart too, I think), and then they had to sink ALL their remaining cash into AA (can't remember what those are called).

If it's finally been fully balanced, then I might hit it up again, I love building mazes.

I never got past 68. :(

I seem to recall hearing that the Fun mode had been beaten, but only by juggling. You did need to go heavy on boosted storm towers to kill the fliers.

I've seen it. It's okay. I don't think I've seen "The NeverEnding Story" in full length, only clips from it, but you could probably compare it with that. Or "Legend".

BTW, I tried the card game, too, but while it's very nicely done, it gets boring quick. Like KO wrote, one does wonder if it wasn't too much of a waste of time afterwards. I've usually been two levels ahead of the AI after level 10, sometimes even three levels, but while this does make a difference at first it doesn't seem to make any difference at all once you reach the 100 life cap. The sanity for you and your enemy is determined randomly each game, there were times when my opponent had better values than me despite me being three levels ahead of him. I did finish with level 30 as "Great Cthulhu", too.

Yep, fun but gets boring. It would be nice if it were a multiplayer (especially team play, since each player can only summon 1 monster at a time)-nicer still if the concept were combined with a boardgame, somehow.

And while it does have some atmosphere, it's definitely not of 'Lovecraftian' levels. It's not quite of 'agic: The Gathering' levels, for that matter.

Still, although I agree it's a somewhat 'cheap' game, it's better than a vast majority...It's a worthy effort for an Independent, though, and the 'Call of Cthulhu' people at Chaosium would be smart to pick it up and run with it.

more cards and making decks would be nice.. though probably it's not balanced enough for that.. just more cards and MP might be best

Well, I mentioned 'The Great Yokai War' because supposedly, it features a lot of traditional Japanese spirits/demons/beings, and the ratings I've read about it have been good. I haven't seen it yet, myself, although I do plan to.

The Neverending Story was ok. I prefer The Dark Crystal, Time Bandits, Sword of the Valiant, Dragonslayer, Highlander, The Black Cauldron...

I can hardly believe that Tom Cruise starred in 'Legend' a million years ago. Where did you go wrong, Tom? I still like that movie-probably my favorite movie with Tom Cruise in it.

We had some pretty good fantasy films in the 80's.
