in particular, if you stop paying their hire?

They stay prophets. Last time I checked, they get your bonuses if you pick one up later.

Its also true of captured prophets. If you use a charm to force one to switch sides.

right, but are you able to immediately re-prophetize; wait for 6 turns until you can; wait until the merc is killed... ?

and if I get a mercenary to be my prophet, disown him, and then buy him again? Could I then have TWO prophets?

Im not sure. Sounds like it might be worth testing.

ok. Apparently you can´t. At least the option didnt show up for me in the six months the mercs were hired by other factions...

You can have two prophets if you buy the other nations merc prophet, I experimented on stuff like this, although I don't remember if you get a dominion bonus from him.

the more interesting thing is, if I remember, you can:

merc (hall of fame)
prophet
kill
make a new prophet
rebirth old one

and now you do have 2.

no, the more interesting thing would be:

if you prophetize a merc, then don't pay him and he drops out of the merc list, will you be able to prophetize somebody else again at any time or will he stay your prophet in hiding forever?

Same for "opponent bought the merc and keeps holding on to him forever".

Maybe Mercs shouldn't be able to get prophetized at all, that would make things a lot easier.

It does seem buggish

Oh, a similar theme happens if you prophetize a Horror, by the way. After a while, it goes bye bye. Even if you GoR and Empower them. As you can probably guess, this one I learned the hard way.

I rather feel if you make a prophet out of a merc, you get what you deserve. I can think of a few situations where I would do it, but I wouldn't cry over spilled milk if somebody then outbid me and stole my prophet.

Adept, you are 100% correct. If KO and JK could anticipate making a prophet out of a merc, I would prefer that they pick lottery numbers for me.
