Are there sites where I can download maps? I am rarely happy with the random-generated maps, as they have too much water and not enough choke points (perhaps the next patch can give us the option of configuring the random maps? :))

The map list (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=34207) thread under mod & map subforum lists most maps with picture and link to the original thread. I think there's also a map database wiki.

Thanks, and well-met again, Endoperez! Even this Alzheimer-ridden, old fogie remembers Endoperez as one of the most helpful members of this forum! :)

You can configure the random maps.
Go into the Game Tools,
then Random Map Creator.
Setting the mountains higher and impaasable makes good choke-point maps. Set the water lower.
Here is one that I made for my solo games.

OMG, that's wonderful. Thanks much for pointing it out.
P.S. What does "ruggedness" category in the options mean? Does it make the map more mountainous? Or does it make resources scarcer (one interpretation of "rugged" terrain)? Or something else?

If I remember it makes the map more choppy. Not so smooth lined.
