View Full Version : MP Discharge - LA game - Finished

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. And squids. And whatnot. A new game, what do you say?

Basic info:
Late Age, no Ermor or R'lyeh, please, and thanks for the fish.
Around 15 players, planning on a long-ish game with quite a bit of action. If we get
I'd like to have people with some experience in mp games, though won't say no to a total starter either. You only learn by playing.
Mod(s): CBM 1.3 (includes worthy heroes iirc)
Map: Glory of the Gods (MP) - startpositions modded - See post #36 for the map file, or just click the link on llamaserver.
Last man (or dragon or lich or whatever you choose your god to be) standing wins.
24h per turn until people want more time to think up their stratagems.
Hosting will be done on llamaserver (Praised be thee, four legged shaggy animal with great coding skills)
Other options:
Hall of Fame entries 15
Renaming allowed (of course)
Normal research
NO score graphs, may paranoia rule the land.
And I'm not forcing you to stand by your pacts (NAPs, Alliances, trades). If you think you can get away with your scam, go ahead. It's a perilous world out there, but if you break your treaties easily, don't think other people will stand up to their words to you either. Every action has an equal reaction. (Meaning basically that this game will have a machiavellian politics.)

Roleplaying your nation/pretender/prophet/neuroptera on this forum (and in politics) is suggested and looked kindly upon but not enforced. Imagination is your limit. Basically. Provided that you can conjure your imagination into words.

Players:

C'tis, Desert Tombs - Quitti (Lizards shall arise again, if not voluntarily, then by dark magic.)
Agartha, Ktonian Dead - Juffos (Hu-Nam corpse glorifiers)
Man, Towers of Chelms - Caerun (Jealous tower guardians)
Marignon, Conquerors of the Sea - Ossa (BLOOD! FIRE!)
Patala, Reign of the Nagas - Revolution (Painful water)
Abysia, Blood of Humans - Kortek (MORE FIRE, LESS BLOOD!)
Pangaea, New Era - Nimnio (Natures revenge)
Ulm, Black Forest - Illuminated one (Vampires, ghouls, whatnot)
T'ien Ch'i, Barbarian Kings - Rabelais (Mongolian hordespam!)
Arcoscephale, Sibylline Guidance - Purgatorio (Phalangites, Phalangites. I like this word. Phalangites.)
Pythium, Serpent Cult - hunt11 (Heretical Swampageddon)
Jomon, Human Daimyos - Dark Kitty (Shall spam samurai archers)
Bogarus, Age of Heroes - Zapmeister (Go go gadget mages)
Mictlan, Blood and Rain - LoloMo (Rawr, obsidian clubs for everyone)
Atlantis, Frozen sea - Agema (Deep frozen bones)

And the game is running. Everyone have fun :)

(Information subject to change. I do not take any responsibility on your cats or avocados, whichever might be reading this. And all the usual stuff. You know, what you get when you press "I accept" when installing stuff. Agreeing on not using this game as a nuclear weapon and such.)

///

Game is now finished, congratulations to Revolution playing Patala for the win :)

The nation of Agartha was waning. All the great Pale One Oracles were already dead, and a new people, the Hu-Nams, had replaced the native Agarthans. Many bodies were embalmed to preserve the Agarthan legacy through these times of toil and hardship, and a new god has arisen, one who has claimed giving these corpses unnatural life will bring the nation of Agartha back its lost glory.

That is, I will be playing as Agartha, Ktonian Dead.

Well, if there's still time to find out who the heck they are, I'd like to try Bogarus.

Quitti
November 7th, 2008, 06:22 AM
Regarding the difficulty of magic research:

This mainly boosts the abilities of non-magical nations, and the more magic-affiliated races take a while to get to the point where they start being quite real threat to others, like Bogarus. It takes time to get evocation to 8-9, where their mages start to own ;)... Not that they'd be useless anyway. But it is a boost to some of the blessrush-nations such as Mictlan (And I think Pythium had some nasty sacreds too?). Oh and T'ien Ch'i had these fun cavalry too.

I'd like a vote on if research should be normal/difficult. If you do not voice your opinion I'll count you as indifferent. Mainly what I've heard from you so far, most would want it at normal - PREFERABLY PM ME, so we won't clutter up this thread with those posts.

--
Edit: Seems like we have mictlan, pythium and t'ien ch'i in, Meaning that I'm preferring normal research more and more. Bogarus is going to have a fun time :D

I've got about half a dozen MP games under my belt but none have been Late Era, so if you can give me a day or two to check out the nations before I pick I'd be grateful.

Revolution
November 9th, 2008, 02:58 PM
Alexander is also a nice similar sized map. With either of those or if you choose a random map I suggest going into the map editor and making provinces with less than 3 neighbors or those that are surrounded by marsh/wasteland no starts and then giving us the edited map file. Glory of the gods defiantly has some spots you would not want to start in.

"Concerns have arisen over *heavy breath through teeth* meetings taking place without the Kings ears in form."

*The red hood of the messengers robe lifts showing a young man with red silk patches coving his eyes.*

"Should there arise a need to expand our nations borders think of it as a fire burning through an old growth forrest, allowing a new age to grow in its place."

*He smiles a toothy smile. It almost looks as though something is glowing in his mouth.*

"Be at peace Children of the Mother Hydra; we crave not the sea, cold and devoid of warmth. My Lord reminds any who touch the holy fires that the only choice he will be given, is to throw blasphemous lechers into the Smoldercone."

*Smoke billows from the mans mouth and face, envelopes him, and before you can look back, he is gone; only ash remains in his place.*

The dark secrets of the Iron Order

Dear readers,

In my investigations into the Iron Order I came upon this letter that proves that the order is indeed plotting against the upright people of Ulm. But please, read yourself:

In response to the letter of 21.6.1407
As a first point I have to complain about condemning relationships before marriage as a sin.
The argument that the of the soul lead to the impurity of the ore is nonsensical. I have simpuritytudied the doctrine as well as you. You will find no reference to prove that sexual intercourse makes the soul impure. These concepts most likely stem from the doctrine of Marignon that has been declared heresy in 1401.
Also Black Steel is not made from pure iron. While it is unknown how it was made exactly evidence suggests that the iron was purposefully contaminated before being worked into Black Steel.
From a military perspective this is pure madness. A great part of the infantry consists of bastard children. By cutting down their numbers you will cut down the number of supporting troops the order can field. And as every general knows these are often critical in a campaign.

My second point is that the Hochmeister Theoderik will not be my successor. He is not intelligent enough and too easy to influence to lead the order. Instead I suggest Alfred. He has proven to be an upright man able to think for himself.

Childebert, Großmeister

As we all know both Hochmeister Alfred and Großmeister Childebert died under mysterious circumstances one year later and Theoderik became the new Großmeister. The ..........

There are reports of a disease in Atlantean territory. If this should prove to be the result of another nation seeding our territory with disease-bearing units, it will be considered an act of war, and treacherous breach of NAP if applicable.

Our border patrols have been heightened to a state of alert, and will expect to catch any potential offender soon.

Hecata stared at the map. Blasted Atlantians. Killing her armies. Endangering her lands. Thwarting all her plans. She had to act now before they reached the western seas becoming untouchable. Still she could strike at them. The towers had been built. The pawns were in position, ready to lead the knights. The bishop was being moved. "Check" she muttered to herself ...

... This was madness. Marching all night through the thickest of woods. They said Atlantians could see at night. A bat was flying over him. Maybe it was just him but those damn buggers were becoming more and more.
When they reached the end of forest the moon was shining bright revealing the Atlantian militia. At least they wouldn't have to worry about the light. "Infantry form up! Rangers ready crossbows!" he yelled. After some seconds the sergeant replied "Crossbows ready!". He waited, letting the Atlantians come closer. "Volley!" ...

... After the prayer he looked at the men. The knights saluted, faces of stone. But the infantry ... too many fresh recruits, too many worried faces.
He sighed. "Boys just keep this in mind. We will not drown. Don't try to breathe. Keep the ranks and watch your neighbour. Reinforcements are on the way. Be steady and we shall see the sun again." Silently he added: "Some of us. ... Maybe.". "Let's go!" ...

... Knock. Knock ... Knock. ... Knock. Knock. He opened the door and urged the cloaked man to come in. Just as he shut the door again an Atlantian patrol turned around the corner. They waited in silence as they went away. He lit the candle. All were assembled now. "The order has arrived. It is time to reveal ourselves. Get the girls and the daggers ..."

... It was black magic. He knew. His fiancee was a with. His, the blessed one's. The items she gave to held power. Unholy ... but in a strange harmony with the power of the blessing. If the order ever found out ... there was no way back now.
She had led him below the waves and now they were standing before the Atlantian forces. He still loved her. They would not harm her. At this thought his heart started to pound like a hammer falling down on the anvil. She kissed him while he turned towards the advancing Atlantians. He felt untouchable. Never miss, never tire.
He charged impaling one on his lance. He gripped his sword ...

Bah. The traitors of Ulm. They ask for a NAP, agree to it after negotiations, and then stab their fellow signatories in the back after less than 10 turns.

Still, there is at least one bight side. Apart from one loose province, Ulm shared no land border with Atlantis. Their brief advantage in numbers and surprise will rapidly turn into a wholesale slaughter. Their troops may be granted underwater breathing but still flounder like beached whales; their mermen are barely skilled and worse equipped; they cannot supply enough waterbreathing for adequate magical backup to their armies.

The war underwater will be short and - for Ulm - very painful. Then Atlantis can strike anywhere and everywhere along Ulm's coast...

Yes. I don't know how common it is, but it's considered good manners to not password protect your pretender since there's no way to get a sub or AI the nation if the player goes missing...

Ulm should now be AI too. And the armies of C'tis have once again been decimated. Mictlan has a nasty bless (like usual).

Hello

I have to go back home and drop the games I'm in (I can't take my computer). I'm sorry to warn so late (and after having already stalled one or two turns) but something unexpected came up and I forgot a bit about the games I'm in.

There is no password on my pretender, do as you see fit :) (it is possible that I will be available again in a week or so if no sub has been found yet...)

Have fun,

My apologies for the upcoming stall. It was the case that I'd have time to get home from work before the turn was due, but something seems to have affected that delicate balance, and I didn't notice until it was too late (I'm still at work now). No complaints, no worries, and the next turn will be in on time. (I recommend everyone shore-up their defences, I'll be attacking you all simultaneously with the surplus resources.)

I control your cap now (patala) actually the ai lingered on for quite a while...Tien only died a few turns ago. After laying seige to your cap I sat there for quite a while hoping for a dom kill and attended to other matters...but you had some dominion in Abysia's land that just wouldn't quit. Taking a rainbow pretender in MP is always risky and it definitely was a tough starting spot.

And I'm not forcing you to stand by your pacts (NAPs, Alliances, trades). If you think you can get away with your scam, go ahead. It's a perilous world out there, but if you break your treaties easily, don't think other people will stand up to their words to you either. Every action has an equal reaction. Mmm, the way I read Ossa's post, he was simply stating a fact without passing judgement on it.

In a Machiavellian game, it is still of value to the other players to know which NAPs are worth something, and which ones aren't ;)

I know: that's why I said "I'm sure you haven't forgotten, Ossa..." I wasn't faulting him for letting other players know the situation (a wise move on his part); I just thought my allies in other games would like to know that I appreciate the distinction between the two game types.

At this time, I would like to ask for a concession...A rough count puts me at around 130 provinces total income of about 10,000 gold (6000 after upkeep) 263 gems/turn (only 2 of which are blood slaves) I have been putting those gems to good use...I found the Ultimate gateway during my invasion of Pythium (for those not in the know, it's a magic site with a 50% conjuration bonus...which in the hands of my nation is almost unfair, thus the proliferation of rudras and kinnaras) I finished researching quite a while ago so all of my mages are free to roam and cast magic to devastating effect.

There are still some potent nations out there (Atlantis has shown very solid defensive anti SC tactics and I'm sure pangea and his carrion beasts would prove unpleasant) but thankfully I'm not a one trick pony and my SC's are mostly there to disrupt income while my main armies take down the real resistance. I have quite enjoyed this game but my turns are starting to take a painfully long time and at this point I think it's less a case of if I'll win and more a case of when. I'll crack that dome on your cap eventually Atlantis :D

*Stuff*

I know that you've been expanding long and mostly unopposed, but darn, didn't think that much.

I know there's pretty much nothing left of me (C'tis) after countless years of warring with mictlan, swapping provinces and simply killing each others mages and troops off. At least I can draw some comfort from the fact that I outlived him :)

So, I'm willing to call it Patala's victory (Ultimate gateway, right...) unless no-one else thinks they can oppose him in the race to godhood.

You mean, one day you'll crack all three of the domes on my capital ;).

I've been struggling against both Ulm and Abysia, and whilst I've been crushing their armies by and large, I've also lacked the troops to exploit and make big territorial gains. Although I've finally become very strong in SC/troops and was ready for a big push when Patala attacked, being stalled for so long has exhausted my empire in gems and gold.

I can probably make Patala's life somewhat difficult for a while with the firepower I have left should everyone fancy an all-out assault, but equally I'd agree to concede if all others do.

Hmph. Nobody notices the little hoburg priests sneaking about doing their thing.

Oh, wait, that was kinda the point. Nevermind, carry on. :)

On to the topic at hand, I'm a bit on the fence. On one hand, I know full well I won't be able to stop Patala at this point with what I have, despite the generous donations from Marignon. At most, I figure I can be an annoyance for a few turns, but that's about it. On the other hand, if I know there's a proper war going on out there that might end up in Patala's fall, I've no problems at all with being said annoyance.

So it really comes down to how many people are willing to keep trying the impossible. In other words, I'm pretty much on the same lines as Agema here.

I got pretty lucky this game...I started out with my capital literally two provinces away from Mictlan's capital. I was reasonably concerned...even with an awake SC god there is not much I could have done against a bless rush...thankfully Mictlan agreed to a NAP and eventually seemed to get mired in a war with literally all his neighbors. I was able to expand reasonably rapidly but my position was really exposed, I was surrounded on all sides but I was reasonably happy with the amount of land I had so I established NAP's with Pythium, Man, Jomon Pangea and Abysia (I was really a big pacifist in the early game). My early focus was to get as many cheap castles up as possible as quickly as possible to jump start my research while site searching as much as I could. Tien Chi had been complaining about his weak start location (and it was quite bad) and when I saw that he was my neighbor and that his god was a crone and was out manually site searching I figured he'd be a relatively easy kill in the early game and would have the potential to be a big pain the the *** if allowed to live to the late game. So I banded together with Abysia and we were able to dispatch Tien chi...unfortunately I underestimated the ai and ended up sitting on his capital and another castle that the ai built in the north for what seemed like an eternity. I had planned to dominion kill him but his dominion was quite persistent and lived on in abysia's northern land where aby had no temples. When I did eventually successfully storm his capital I took it with ease but my god (The destroyer of worlds) took some light damage and managed to get feeble minded. Not a huge deal since my early expansion was over; he would sit on Tien's capital doing nothing for the rest of the game.

I was lucky enough to find 2 indy mage sites...Gnomes E2N2, very useful battle mages and wizards who gave me access to all magical paths and have a natural 10rp/turn for 180 gold. I quickly researched my way up to Maelstrom and put that up and with hammers proceeded to clam like a *****. I was making an average of 4 clam of pearls/turn for quite a while, I ended up stopping at 50 clams. C'tis having well of misery had me concerned so I eventually overwrote it with my own and picked up some nice death unique items. Most of my death gems ended up going into liches, I ended up with 6 of them and would use them to cast manifestation and leprosy...Marignon and Atlantis took most of them, despite the fact that they are anonymous spells I did not throw them against people I had NAP's with.

Jomon and Marignon went to war somewhat early on...I had pretty good scouting the whole game and watched most of the battles. Despite generally taking heavy losses due to Mari's impressive PD Jomon seemed to have achieved an advantage over Mari and killed his god when he accepted peace and they returned to prewar borders. I considered attacking and trying to wipe out Jomon at this point but he was pretty new to multiplayer and I had given him some advice and kind of felt bad about attacking him...so I ended up sitting around summoning/forging. All my neighbors seemed to be stagnating...the eastern powers were destroying each other with no nation seemingly managing to achieve an advantage. Eventually Pythium went ai and so did Jomon so I moved in on the two nations simultaneously. I took an undefended province of Pythium's (I had scouts all over Pythiums land and he would always be leaving provinces with 0 PD...drove me nuts but I did not want to fight hydra masses. When I took the province the ai decided to send some human made hydra armies my way...an unpleasant surprise, I had seen what those things did to bogarus's nice SC's and I was not really prepared to fight them...So I kept the AI's armies at bay by constantly killing all its commanders with earth attacks and manifestations. To the west jomon gave me some nasty surprises as well. The AI can be pretty serious business with human created armies in its hands. I had a cavalry mass overrun a large astral mage force with an infantry front that was not big enough to properly protect it, and his astral mages made using my SC's a dangerous prospect. Eventually though I wore down and conquered most of both these nations and in Pythiums land found the ultimate gateway.

By now my SC force was really strong...Marignon was fighting Pangea and Atlantis was fighting Atlantis, I gave them some aid with remote spells when I'd see a big stack of troops from Marignon or Atlantis. At this point I was pretty sure I would win and was just trying to weaken/demoralize my enemies to make them a bit softer down the road. With my SC's I was able to take over most of C'tis in 1 turn and had it all in two (except for the castles which I was content to leave under siege) Mictlan was dominion killed and I ended up splitting his land with Man before giving Man warning on our NAP. I was careful not to fight Ulm because I wanted the ai to continue focusing on Atlantis.

At this point Marignon was pretty much dead and Abysia still had a lot of land but his armies and mages were pretty much destroyed by Atlantis. Man had invested most of his money in PD...I couldn't even get scouts into his land but I knew that my SC's would easily dispatch any number of unsupported PD. The only threats to my power as I saw it were Pangea and Atlantis. I had talked to Pangea and he indicated he didn't really want to fight me and knew I was in a much more powerful position than him so I sent troops south to start raiding Atlantis and started striking in Abysia to claim some of his vast amounts of undefended land. That's pretty much it, thanks for the game everyone!

Sorry bout the wall of boring text :D

Interesting - I mainly bombarded mictlan and forged/summoned stuff with those death gems - I could've done better, but since Bogarus wanted me to start fighting Mictlan the same time as him, and I thought he was an easy opponent with Man and Bogarus by my side - Unfortunately Man started doing something else, and Bogarus went AI. That left me pretty much alone against Mictlan, and as a added bonus the Bogarus AI decided to attack me. And all this while starting in probably one of the lousiest positions in the game - I think I had 2 waste and 2 mountain provinces next to my cap, with closest mountain/farmlands (best ones around up there) 3-4 turns away.

Still, it was an interesting game for the most part.
