This may have already been posted but, I couldn,t find it. I have the download version and can't save. It goes to the save screen and freezes, right then. Computer has 512 mb ram, pardon ignorance but don't know how much free ram. Do I have a memory problem or am I doing something wrong?

You should not be having any problems with that amount of RAM. RAM has nothing to do with saving the game - if it plays then it will save.
Is the save screen Saying "INPUT A NAME FOR YOUR SAVE FILE" above the red string input window that is showing a suggested save game name?.
If so, it will wait forever for you to enter a name there (or accept the default) and then hit the RETURN key. (Or hit ESC to abort the string entry.)
See Game Options->Help Tab (the one with the helicopter)->Game Manual button. Once the Game Manual is loaded then the "Saving a Game" link describes the save process.

That is the screen I get to. And it goes no further. I can not enter a name nor continue nor exit. Nothing.

Check to see that you have a Saved Games folder in your main folder. I somehow lost mine and had a similar problem.

If the save game folder is missing you won't see " >Auto-saved game " in slot one and not having a save game folder doesn't cause a freeze, in my game anyway, you simply cannot save the game but different computers may act differently in that circumstance
I assume you've just recently DL'd it and started playing and this brings up a bunch of questions
1- what operating system are you using ?
2-Did you install all of the patches ?
and, if this isn't a recent DL
3- Have you been able to save a game in the past?
What I would suggest is delete the existing game and re-install it and all the patches in the order they were released. Not being able to save is not normal under any circumstances

The other suggestion would be to defragment your Hard Drive with the check for lost clusters, if you have not done so recently. Freeing up "lost" clusters can significantly increase disk space.
Also, consider a surface scan for bad disc sectors. Those can cause all sorts of strange errors if present, not just save errors. Run the surface scan overnight though - it takes a lot of time!.

Thanks guys. Now I know the game will save and I'm not as dumb as I thought I was. Deleting and reinstalling the game was my next option. Just wanted to see if it would save and if I was doing something wrong. Again, thanks.

Defraging before re-installing would probably be the best course of action under the circumstances
