Can anybody tell me where a random map created within the game is saved, I want to add some details to it but the map file is not in the dominions3/maps directory

It very nicely puts it into the savedgame directory for that game. That allows it to be cleaned up with the game and not clutter up your maps view when you start another game.

By the way, did you know that you can set variables for the random map creation?
I like to set the ground color to green (I dont really like snowy maps or maps where plains is dead-brown).
I also set water from default 30% to 20%
and Mountains from default 20% to 50% because I like lots of choke-points

You can change the defaults (and other game defaults) with the command switches. In Windows you just add them to the call on the EXE in your shortcut (or make a new shortcut with different switches for each variation you like to play)

Those command switches are awesome, but I've started using the RanDom utility which activates a Dom3 process with the switches you specify, and has a simple and fast UI to help you make multiple maps, even with different settings, very quickly.

I'm sorry I must be looking in the wrong place, should the savedgame directory be in my dominions3 folder or does the game put it in some other location ?

It should be there. If I start a game called foozer and tell Dom to create a randomly generated map for it, then in my dominions3/savedgames/foozer directory will be files named __randommap_foozer.rgb and __randommap_foozer.rgb
On WinXP that is.

Are you on Vista? If you install programs to Program Files under Vista, and there's no manifest, it does something to put user-created files elsewhere (for some reason relating to security which I don't fully understand). I use Vista but Dominions is under \usr\dom3\ so I can't tell you more.

Is reinstalling Dom3 in a different folder an option? E.g. c:\dom3?

If not, a quick google search leads me to think (http://www.clipboardextender.com/off-topic/vista-program-files-hide-and-seek) you will find Dom3 maps somewhere under C:\Users\<Your User Name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Dom3.

you might try searching your machine. The name of the file should be standard. Search for __randommap, or for .rgb for that matter. There probably isnt many of them.
