Hey guys. I'm new to the forum but have been reading some of the other posts for a while now. One thing I can't figure out how to do is make a mod work for my game. I have a Windows XP computer and when i try to download the mod the message pops up that windows can not recognize the file type. All these mods look great and I'm really exited to try some of them but so far I haven't managed to make of any of them work for my game.

Any help you guys offer is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance

You're likely missing a program to unpack the files from their containers.

I'd suggest winrar, from www.rarlabs.com, which can handle most types of compressed files well.

Everyone has their own favourite, though, so waiting a bit might land you more suggestions.

XLegend,

Mods are regular old text files with the .dm extension. Calchet may be right if the filetype is a zipped or rar'ed compression of the mod (often done if the mod comes with a special graphic identifying it or graphics for new units), but even after you extract it Windows won't do anything with the mod file(s). Instead, save the mod to the mods subdirectory of your dom3 installation (e.g. c:\Program Files\dominions3\mods) and then start Dom3. You enable mods under "Game Options" on the main screen, before you start/load a game.

P.S. If you want to understand modding better, read the documents in the docs subdirectory of your dom3 installation.

Thank you guys very much for responding.

Max, it took me a while but i eventually figured out how to get the file in the folder. I had searched ont the forums for a while and I couldn't find out how to do it (I never thought it would be in the guidebook). I'm decently tech-challenged so I had no idea what sort of file it was and thought it would act like a patch.

Again thanks guys

I'm glad it worked for you in the end.
