I was fooling around with making little banners for signatures, but it seems that even when I turn on viewing signatures that they don't pull up. Oh well, if you want to use this for a website or a signature on another forum feel free. I might add a few more.

If I had hot models I probably wouldn't share :-P

Perhaps, I could do a few. I can't make promises because I am on a break for a little bit and will get pretty busy shortly. Let me know what you need and I can try.

Great take on the "dividing world" thing. Maybe I should use that at the top of my maps page. And the click on Dom3 icon one would work really well on my aboutDom3 page.

Keep em coming. :)
How about something with Tux about to hit the Dom3 icon for my HostingGames or ServerInfo pages? (tux is the linux mascot). Who are the mascots for Windows and Mac? Gates and Jobs? Having all three sitting around a Dom3 icon might be cool.
(sorry, I get carried away with ideas)

Windows' mascot is that damnable paper clip from Word. :re: Alternately, they were going to use the old guy in the top hat from Monopoly, but couldn't get the rights cheaply enough.

Apple's mascot is Barney. Pure hellspawn.

If you have any requests for small scale changes let me know. For example, I can get rid of the transparency on the logo to make it stand out better. Note that the shadow was a practical choice so you can see your icons easier (I assume most people keep them on the left side of the desktop like myself).

I also want to give much credit to Kristoffer Osterman who made the sprites, probably the terrain, the map, the cover, etc. He is very talented and this is really a collage of his work. In other words, he did the hard part.

Important: For all those who have used the Dominions Desktop 2 (not for widescreen) you should set the image as your desktop again because I noticed a small white line in the upper right and have gone back and fixed it for all resolutions.

Since I can't go back and edit my previous posts, I am going to add a couple links. These are the same as the desktops above except there is no transparency on the logo.

Alright... just for fun (and to complement your new background). Check them out, they are cursors. These two are meant to be used together.

Lich normal select cursor (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/dduckett/Dominions%203%20Cursors/lichcursor.cur)
Lich working in background cursor (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/dduckett/Dominions%203%20Cursors/lichbusy.ani)
Lich link select (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/dduckett/Dominions%203%20Cursors/lichlinkselect.ani)

(On Windows XP, to use these go to control panel, then to mouse, then pointers. Click normal select and if you double click you will have a chance to browse folders. Find lichcursor.cur and select it. Then follow the same steps to set working in the background to lichbusy.ani. The spot for clicking is the lich's staff.)

Man, you work is amazing.

Just to throw an idea, why don't you do a screen saver?

I had actually thought about it, but it seems that there is coding involved (unless I do a power point type screensaver or pay for a program). I found a program to create screensavers but it worked a lot like Windows MyPictures and I could not make the images fullscreen. I then thought about gathering a compilation of screenshots that users could run through using my pictures in Windows, but that probably wouldn't be available to people on other OS.

As a standard question, are people happy with the signature sizes and such? Are they too big or too small? I would make some mega desktops but my own monitor resolution only goes up to 1280 x 1024 (which I usually stop there for resolutions).

By the way, critiques are always welcome. If you think something could be improved in the future then let me know. Unfortunately, my break is ending shortly and then I will not be able to produce near as much.

Also, please excuse typos in previous posts because after a certain point I cannot edit them.

I've never heard of a cross platform screen saver engine. So your options are either not make one at all or make on for the different platforms, or just for windows.
Can you use power point to create a screen saver?

vladikus
January 9th, 2009, 02:00 AM
I can use powerpoint, but the way it works is it exports a bunch of images as .bmp and then the user would use the screensaver "My Pictures Slideshow." So, in that case, a collection of screenshots would be all that the user would need. It wouldn't be very pretty, but it would work (likely only on Windows).

I'm not too sure about all the options out there, but pretty much every GUI has an option to go through a bunch of images as backgrounds out of the box.

Well, then I'd say its possible. The only other problem is hosting space. Unfortunately, my hosting server only allows me about 30 MB. I could pack screenshots together (probably .zip), but I am going to need a better alternative shortly.

It would be nice to have a kind of screen shot repository so we could get a wide variety from everyone. Any ideas?

Maybe make some banners that are forum friendly so users can use them in the signature :)

vladikus
January 9th, 2009, 01:03 PM
Upon further searching I found the signature compliance guidelines and now understand why my signatures have not been working. I will see what I can do to make the signatures forum friendly. Although, I have not seen any signatures on the forums at all despite having signatures enabled. I only see avatars.

Edit: I have confirmed this. Based off of these guidelines (image http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=31257&highlight=signature). I changed one of my banners to meet specifications, which you can get here (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/dduckett/Dominion3%20Banners/domsig4shrap.jpg). The banner did not show up for me and I have yet to see any graphic signatures on the forum--I only see text.

Did I find old guidelines. Do other people see images in signatures?

vladikus
January 9th, 2009, 01:23 PM
Okay I see your signatures now Dom, but only after I enabled:
Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)

I'm taking a guess on this but that probably means that adding a signature through the forum is the wrong way to go about doing it. My banners will probably only work as code in the signature to the link. I'm going to try that now.

Yep, used [IMG] tags rather than the forum's way of setting up a signature. It's a shame that most of those options (enabling signatures and [IMG] tags are disabled by default.

Im going to sound like a fanboi again but..
many of the larger forums have it off by default. As new small forums they have the settings really high then gradually learn that its not a great idea. They have to cut back later which ticks off users.

Altho this new software they switched to does things in a very good way for that. Better than many forums handle it.

Your logic may be sound, but you don't just -sound- like a fanboi. ;)

I still miss the old forums, very much. "Thank Gandalf Parker for this useful post." - That about sums up what I like about the new forum, and I'll never agree that it was worth what we gave up.

The new search is better in most cases but fails miserably when you are searching for a phrase instead of a word, or if the word you are looking for is not indexed for some reason. For example:

The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : wish

Personally I think the changes to editing posts were huge. 8 \ Equally huge, the changes to attachments, causing many people to have to use MediaFire and such for maps. Also, I will always feel the PM limit to have been completely unnecessary (the few people who "abused" it were not even a problem until all the data was converted to test the new forums, we could be forced to slash them again next time, in 2-3 years or whatever).

But it's hard to forgive Shrapnel for making us LOOK at this forum constantly, that's for sure. :( They seem so nice, why would they do this to us?

Other than the Search function (which is better and worse, apparently), you don't seem to have a strong opinion on what you like better, it just sounds as if you are apathetic towards the change. ;) It's not that I don't like the new "features", but I'd give them up in a heartbeat to have the old forum back, or to have this one behave as the old one did (best of both worlds, server side functionality, and client side performance!). :p

To drag this back on topic for a moment, outstanding work on this art, Vladikus! :D

I did see the banner that you had in your sig, vladikus, but I think that the graphic was too big for a sig, too. Even Thilock_Dominus' sig graphics are borderline for me. They're about the maximum size that sig graphics should be.

For what it is worth, when I registered (a recent event) I noted that the forum rules said:

GRAPHICS IN SIGNATURE GUIDELINES
1. No copyrighted material- No copyrighted photos or logos from other sites without the owners permission.

2. No hotlinking- Either host the image on your own website or on a free service, dont steal someone elses bandwidth.

3. File size limits: Combined size limit for all signature graphics can be no more than 35k

4. Dimension limits:
a. Combined maximum width of all graphics in signature is to be no more than 600pixels
b. Combined maximum height of all graphics in signature is to be no more than 125 pixels

If you are unsure if your signature graphics comply with the above guidelines, right click on the graphics in your signature and add together the dimensions and file sizes to get the total. If they are over the maximum width, height or file size then you need to remove or change your signature graphics until you comply with the above guidelines.

You will be asked to change your signature graphics if they do not comply with the above guidelines. If they are not changed, the graphics will be completely removed from your signature. The banner Vladikus currently has in his sig certainly follows these rules, though Thilock's are about 30kB large. (if 35k is meant to be read as 35kB:smirk:)

Well, while keeping within forum guidelines, what do people feel is a good size for signatures (so they are not too big, annoying, or distracting)? I know we aren't going to agree on this, but I would be interested to get opinions.

Just my personal opinion.....
The give and take in deciding sizes for sigs was to allow room for a decent amount of information. Taking up the entire allowed space for a not very informative picture was just something I wouldnt want to do. If too much of it went on then Im afraid more people would end up turning off the display of sigs in their view.
IMHO

But you do excellent work Vladikus

Well, in a way the smaller the actual pixel size the higher the resolution, which sounds like a good trade off. So I'll just judge it for myself and let you all know when I have them resized.

Alright, here are the resized signatures so they meet the forum's standards. Note that I could not do the last banner because of the many frames in the animation. To conserve kb would be to to make the image impossible to see.
