Players: 6-10+, depending on interest.
Server: LlamaServer (automated play-by-email, FAQ below)
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=35160
Hosting interval: Initially 24 hours, 48 at Turn 20, 72 at 50
Age: Early
Graphs: On
Settings: Default except for renaming on, Magic Site at 55% (+10%, which tends to mean that people generally get the gem types they need)
Mods: None (non-negotiable)
Map: random and 15 per player. Note that 15 per player is a tight map which will lead to early wars rather than later wars.
Rules: Anything goes. Unless you are hacking files or spamming email/mail, any tactic allowed by the game is considered fair game.
Exception: If you make a Pact with someone, record it in the game thread with the Turn (and record when you end it). If you don't want to record it for any reason (eg. secret pact), then there shouldn't be any complaining about pact-breakers in the game thread.

That's nothin'. For pretender design I set up an AI opponent of the faction I'm going to play and then beat them down with double-bless giants. After I get a glimps of the AI's god and a good look at his scales I can reconstruct the entire build. I then use that for the build in my MP game.

So far I've only been able to pull up the thumbnail of the map by extracting it from the source code of the llamaserver web pages. The page has an error where the thumbnail array isn't defined properly I think.
I'm hoping for a little plot of land to the North-East.
http://www.llamaserver.net/mapThumbs/DarkHeavens.png
Edit: I believe this might be the maps description...
233 land + 22 sea.
No fixed starts.
Just a regular fightin' map.
llamaserver doesn't seem to have a link available for download. I'm sure our admin will provide the map when the last player submits a pretender.
(One final note: I hate html generated from applications as they are a pain to read.)

I'm okay with that. I think you should just submit. You never know, depending on how the random placement works out, we might need time to restart the game anyhow.
That said, people might have to deal so long as their placement is workable and not absolutely terrible.

In an attempt to avoid a river to tears on turn 1, have the northern ponds and the provinces with less than 3 neighbors been designated no starts?

January 28th, 2009, 11:46 PM
I agree...people have to deal with a random map start.
But I also agree with Revolution that there is no reason to have to have such a bad start as to make that person long to be put out of the game.
I think Revolutions idea is a good one...(I am no modder so I have no idea if this can be done), Have some areas where there just is NO WAY you can get a start if you are placed there marked as no start.
Other than that or sitting on someones lap at the start..lets roll!!!

I don't think this is a strong map for water nations regardless of start.
Though perhaps at least setting nostarts in the water to help water nations wind up in a bigger pond isn't unreasonable.
GrudgeBringer
February 1st, 2009, 02:05 PM
I (of course went from a great start to a terrible start) but my problem isn't that I only have 3 Provinces ( LOL, I had 7 last start), its that I have lands more suited to sauro that Arco...There are no fertile provinces within sight much less any that I can reach. I have 2 Blanks and 1 Forest around my Cap with wastes around them
As I said I can live with 3 provinces, but I would like to be able to have enough income to buy a mage and MAYBE a couple of archers each turn.
I have never played on a random map so maybe I am actually in a 'good' position.
Someone has to get the short end of the stick, but it sounds like there are quite a few that are in trouble from the start.
I have no idea what to suggest so I will just do my whining now and then do my best....
licker
February 1st, 2009, 06:15 PM
Yep, with as many nations as we have some will no doubt wind up with a less than ideal situation.
I'm not sure what remedy their is short of not playing on a random map though.
My 2nd start is slightly better than the first, but neither outstanding. I suppose it will all depend on whom my neighbors actually are.
Revolution
February 1st, 2009, 06:43 PM
With random start locations it's impossible to please everyone with as many people as we have; it's unfortunate but you just have to work with what you're given (which is easy for me to say since my start isn't too bad).

You're almost definitely going to want to push back hosting more than that...if this game hosts in 9 hours there are going to be alot of people caught by surprise by the rollback who will stale...which out of fairness would cause another rollback and that's a headache no one wants. I'd probably tack on another 12 hours to get everyone back on track.

February 4th, 2009, 03:21 PM
So... as of the previous night my turn was in and everything was in order. I check today to find not one but three messages about DarkHeavens in my mailbox. Indeed, I was unable to resubmit my turn for turn 2 round 2.
A few weird things happened as a result. First, my army still attacked the province I had targeted on turn 2, however, they used the battle arrangement from turn 3, which was optimized for the foe I was facing in those respective turns. Sure enough, I lost more units this go round then last. Now my expansion is less then what was going to be. This bothers me.
However, that's not the weird thing. Apparently I also managed to obtain extra units that I did not have from the previous version of the turn. I'm up one Auger Elder and one Principle. That said, I should probably not complain about the less the optimal expansion.
None-the-less, roll backs should not be taken lightly and avoided whenever possible. Just a comment for future reference. Also, rollbacks need to be given just as much time as any other turn.
Edit: Other things to note. A side-by-side comparison of the respective graphs for each version of the turn shows that Ulm's income has been decreased substantially while Arcosophale has a dramatic improvement. Arcosophale also has a tremendous increase in units in this version as well. There are other little fluctuations, but those are the most notable.

After a roll back you need to delete all the files in your game folder. Not doing so can lead to some issues with playing your next turn.
Otherwise it sounds like the game glitched somehow.

February 4th, 2009, 04:46 PM
You mentioned Arco's gain in money and men...
I had forgotton on turn 2 to set taxes at 170 while taking my first province...and setting my prophet.
With the rollback I set it at 170 thus the money.
I had a 'Event' happen that said a lot of lowborn soldiers ect ect joined the cause....They where about 30 of the same Inf I start with...so now I am back to being happy with the restart in the first place..sigh
I agree, I just happened to be on the forum when I saw that they wnated to roll it back.
There was no discussion or whether in fact they where going to do it.
This morning before I went to the gym I checked and got a message that it was going to post in 6 hours..I got luckey or I would have staled.
I did NOT delete all the old files which may account for me getting a whole army as an event...(maybe I will get one EVERY turn:p).
We have to have a discussion with a game this big before we just roll back, start over, or attack me:D
just an opinion...
K
February 4th, 2009, 05:03 PM
Ok, considering that the roll-back just glitched a bunch of people, I'll assume we don't need a discussion to roll-back again.

Arrrgggghhhhhhhhhhh, we are rolling it back agian?
I don't want to seem like i'm complaining TOO much but we restarted when I had an excellent spot to a place where I have no Provinces backed up agianst the water (your right, I knew it was a random map). But I paid my dollar and took my chance...then had to take another chance after I won.
Then I am semi happy with start (although 1 turn behind everyone) and we have a rollback that could have been a stale if I hadn't have been lucky...BUT got some benifits that might put me on even keel.
Now...we need to roll it back agian?
Are you saying that the game is messed up NOW and in the future because some of us just rolled the turn over the old one without deleting the file...OR, its messed up for the rest of the game....OR your not sure.
I don't claim to know a darn thing about the way this works...it is just taxing in a a game this big that you get put behind the 8 ball and wiggle out and then a re-do puts you right back there...twice!!:confused:

February 4th, 2009, 08:35 PM
GrudgeBringer, I'm sure we can get it right given the turn delay. As much as you want to start over, I'm sure there are some who don't. The same as when the first rollback occurred. You have to understand the position your putting K in. Attempting to make him do something that forces action on his part only places him in a more stressful situation.
I'll tell you what. My position is rather good. I'll float you some money when I have some available.
K, I myself was not calling for a roll back the second time. This is one of those situations were there is no possible way to please everyone and you must understand that. Knowing that this is one of those times means that your damned if you do and damned if you don't. Given all things being equal, my rule-of-thumb is to do the simplest of all possible actions, which in this case is to just leave it be.
One final note. This game can proceed as fast as the last person to submit a turn. If we all make it a point to submit our turns when we can, we can move this right along spite the annoying delays.
K
February 4th, 2009, 09:30 PM
OK, the second roll-back is because the first roll-back basically caused half of the players to stale. That's bad form.
I've mulled it over and I think we should just play on from now. If someone has travel plans or something you should get a temp sub. We have too many players to delay for any one person.

K, That IS the one reason to roll it back and I can understand that. If I hadn't got up at 5 AM to go to the gym and decide to check messages in another game and just run by this one...I would have staled also.My ranting has/had nothing to do with the Admin of the game nor directed at anyone personally. It is that the size of the game means you need to get off to a good start...I had a great start and someone HIJACKS the game (twice).I just wanted to whine for a moment as I have NEVER had a start with 7 Provinces around my Capitol.I was trying to play catch up and was doing reasonably well when someone asked for a delay and someone didn't see it and we rolled it back...Lo and BEHOLD, there is a dominions God and he likes me...I get a whole dang army for free and NOW my friends ...be skeeered, be very a skeeered as I can expand comfortably in 2 directions:D.AND THEN...AND THEN, that tricky Dominios God said it was just a dream and took my army from me.:doh:So I (LOL) lobbied (read that...begging) that maybe we should just start over...:eek:So I have had my say and I thank you for the offer of money...but I can't be bought that cheap ( but for 100 Earth Gems... SOLD!!)Good luck all, lets go see what the new start has in store for me THIS time, you never know maybe I have opened the Tartarian Gate!!:p
Now this here, is a great example of how to whine properly!:D
I think we can safely say that the stalls and roll backs have been a pain to us all, but i'm sure it'll be all systems go from here. It shouldn't surprise that a game this size may fall foul of the occasional admin error.
It won't be long before we are complaining about a new set of ingame issues - trecherous double crossers for instance... Hang in there Grudgebringer, a game of Dominions is about managing the ups and downs!

Hello
I have to go back home and drop the games I'm in (I can't take my computer). I'm sorry to warn so late (and after having already stalled one or two turns) but something unexpected came up and I forgot a bit about the games I'm in.
There is no password on my pretender, do as you see fit :) (it is possible that I will be available again in a week or so if no sub has been found yet...)
Have fun,

Alright, Kailasa killed my wyrm with some bless troops, and is blocking my expansion because my amphibian troops will never be able to fight against them. I am stuck in the corner with three deep sea provinces.

I would say the number of NAPs is standard. Most people average about 5 neighbors. Most people like security and will ask for an average of 3 NAPs. With 14 players in this game that would put us at about 21 NAPs. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it looks like a lot when each one is received one at a time via message board posts.

February 21st, 2009, 11:15 PM
There was no NAP between Helheim and Tir as far as I can tell.
The message my sub sent me was...
"He's [Helheim] told me to not treat it as though there's an nap between us, so I'm pretty sure it's out"
I certainly never had any direct discussions with you, and while I did tell rdonj to accept a nap if you offered one, from his message on the subject it appeared to me that there was indeed no nap.
In any case, what's done is done, if I broke a deal then I broke it unknowingly. I should have asked for clarification in all likelyhood, but from my discussions during my absence the plan was to push north all along.

I've lost track of whom I was speaking to in the game, but there was clearly a discussion... ok. Your point.

Well considering I just staled due to my own time pressure I'd rather do it now, things are only getting more busy for me as all the kids spring sports have started up and I've been enlisted to help coach.
Indeed I'm bailing on one other game already (though it's far less advanced or interesting than this one) because I can put in turns, but I can't put in good turns, so I'd rather just hand it off to someone else.

We haven't really had a whole lot of smack talking in this game. That's really disappointing since I find it to be one of my favorite parts of this game. I guess I only have myself to blame for not starting things early. Better late then never I guess.
My fellow Ermorians and I are slightly insulted that the forces sent by Argatha amounts to what they assume to be a threat to our mighty empire. I seriously hope there will be more to it then what they have offered up to our graveyards so far. We have decided that it would only be sportsmanlike to devote only a fraction of what we have to offer as well.
If by chance they manage to strike down our elders with their pitiful little band, they will rise again more powerful then you can ever imagine. Good fortune to you, though good fortune is much more then what you will need.

Well it seems I forgot to offer my forge capabilities up to the public.
I can forge most items. If you're looking for something drop me a PM and we can discuss prices. I don't have any set prices, as I'm willing to deal if you have a gem type I could use. Just drop me a PM and we'll start the barter.

Hi guys. I am still on business trip, and I barely had time to play... Now tonight I have to work overtime, and it could be possible I could stall... Could admin please delay the turn by 6 hours? I am sure I could return to my hotel and finish by then. Thanks!

I haven't seen this, but it has been reported recently. sansanjuan made note of it: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showpost.php?p=685996&postcount=2648
Edi thinks the problem might be do to a fix related to dead prophets not triggering the ability to reappoint a prophet. A sort of over-correction most likely.

I do need 24 tacked on the NEXT turn...
If Sauro would have got his turn in I might of been able to get this turn in before I left in 8 Hours.
However, I will need at lEAST 12 hours and most likely 24 on the NEXT turn if Sauro takes it to the very end of the turn.
If quickhost is on I will get it done as fast as I can when I get back.
Thanks...I will PM Torin as I don't think he reads these forums much:up:

OK...I am leaving at 6AN CST USA tomorrow morning dor 5 days.
I was going to work on this turn all day and get it sent in and ask for an extension till tuesday for the NEXT turn.
So before I ry and load the turn that just came in....are you saying that it doesn't take, it staled, what?
If we don't get this resolved REAL soon then I will need an extension till tuesday on THIS turn (57 I think) if it doesn't work.
Let me ask this....If EVERONE stales then unless your starving somewhere it should have no effect on wars, or anything else should it?
Let me know guys...

I think Llamaserver keeps a copy of all the .2h files that were sent in. So all we'd have to do is a manual rollback then a manual force host.
Who's the admin for this game again?

Torin is admin but he doesn't check the forums much or his PM's so I email him. You might want to do that or I am going to raise all kinds of H@ll if I have to stale.

I'm sure I'm the one that caused the failure since I'm the one that staled even though I submitted a turn file. (I've got a confirmation e-mail from llamaserver to show for it.) If you roll back and force hosting before I have a chance to redo my turn, the game will fail again.

Then we could roll back, then you could try submitting your turn again, and then force host.

Go back in this thread to where Torin has been on. You either Right Click or left click ( I forget) on the part that says 'Online' or 'Not Online'.
Hit view public profile and it will have "send a privite mwssage and in some it will also have send an E-mail" (Depends on how you set it up), Just click on that (Mine is set up the same way...it doesn't give you the E-mail address...just sends one with yours to respond).
Send him a PM AND an E-mail AND put it in the forum to back yourself up if je doesn't see it or respond.
He doesn't say much....just "OK" in the few instances I have contacted him.
iF we get it done fairly soon I will start working on my turn and will stay up until I can get it done but I will need a EXTENSION on the NEXT turn till Tuesday (though if he sets it on quickhost there is a chance we won't make the finals and I may be back a little earlier and can keep us on schedule).
If NOT then I WII just need an extension till Tuesday on this turn...there is just no way around it as I told everyone earlier.
ALSO, PM me with your Info, plans what ever... PLEASE.
Hope this helps ...let me know what we are doing.

Ok to make this clear to evryone.
I have Pm'd Torin and explained the situation.
I am leaving town Tommorow morning at 6 am CST USA time and will be back Monday evening.
I had asked that the NEXT turn (58) have an extension to Tuesday with it still set on quick host in case we don't make the finals.
With this screwup we have 2 options...everyone gets a stale or we ALL redo turn (57) and HOPE (according to Lama) that it works.
If we are going to redo the turn anyway what difference does a stale make IF we all have it.
Regardless, At this point I am requesting (and have told Torin) that I will need an extension until Tuesday. I MAY have limited access to a comp and could get my turn in on time.
But I need the Extension just the same in case.
What bothers me right now is that only Bigdisawesome and myself have either noticed this or have a comment.
Also I will need turn 57 sent to me as I have deleted it once I got a received message to save space on my E-mail list.
Sorry guys, I am stressed trying to get eveything done so I can get a little sleep and be ready to play tomorrow.

What I need is the discussion to get discussed so I know what I need to do IF I can access a computer.
Otherwise I will be back and have about 12 hours to do my turn WHATEVER we do....
This game is one of the best I have played and I want it to comtinue.
It just seems at this stage of the game any thing that gord wrong has a BIG imppact on the turns and what you scripted.
I just was lobbying for us to continue with the stale as if everyone staled there was a 'No harm No foul' to it.
That was until I loaded the game and saw the things that had happened because it DID stale.
Sigh...I guess I don't really care, lets just do something.

I sent K a PM to see if he remembers the PW. If I get it, I'll try rolling back the current turn. If that happens you won't need the old turn GrudgeBringer.

Everyone staled 'cause Llamaserver unloaded the turns and tried again with blanks after the game crashed. I kinda think it may be my fault, after getting errors in an SP game i realized that i had downloaded the "b" version of the last patch but never installed it, so i did so. I did do the turn over from the start after i updated, but maybe i should have re-downloaded it entirely. I've had a couple glitchy things happen this game before this- the prophet thing i mentioned earlier and two cases of false video tape in minor battles with Sauro. Perhaps these are due to my failure to patch properly, or perhaps there's something else entirely going on.
In any case i'm for holding up for as long as it takes to get this straightened out and make sure GB gets a chance to get his turn in. Possibly someone else who's a little more active on the forum could take over as admin?
@Grudgebringer - the Horror Harmonica attack was very amusing :D

I'm on stand-by, but honestly the whole issue isn't worth this much complicated fuss. Also, everyone should have an equal chance to rethink their turn in my opinion.
P.S.: Something about GrudgeBringer's writing style bothers me. The way he makes each sentence a paragraph makes it harder for me to get what he is saying. No offense, its just weird.

AOE, sorry if I confuse you with my writing style. I separate each point into a paragraph so that it's easier to scan for the points you want to pick out.
Thanks, Revolution. I have very limited access to a computer, and there is no way I can start turn 57 before I return on Monday evening. However, I will work diligently to get it completed ASAP (Tyrant...guess I won't use that horror harmonica trick again, huh?)

Well if you submitted a turn 57 already, then the llamaserver still has it on file and will use it if I'm not mistaken. So really only people that might have had problems need to resubmit. AoE and maybe Tyrant. So if Tyrant get's his turn in before this hosts tomorrow then it should be good to go.
This text excerpt comes from the llamaserver...
Note that once the game is rolled back, it will appear that the game is waiting for 2h files from all players. However, the 2h files from last time the turn was played will in fact be there, and will be used if the game hosts without them being overwritten. This can be useful; often, a game is rehosted in order for only one or two players to retake their turns, while everyone else is expected to make no changes. The game admin can therefore wait till just those players have submitted, and then force hosting. None of the other players will stale (assuming they actually submitted a 2h file last time the turn was played).
So you'll still need an extension on the next turn, but you should be alright on this one.
