Is there any reason to learn Construction past 8? All the magic items in the manual can be made with 8 or lower.

Uh...never mind

actually, the question is:
"is there a reason to learn 8 at all?"

of course, there is. but going from 6 to 8 is a _big_ step (especially on difficult research). getting to 8 and having the artifacts you want (or any artifacts at all, for that matter) available isn't guaranteed. if I do decide to research to 8 and their aren't artifacts I wanted available, then I've really wasted a _bunch_ of research time. is it worth it to take the risk and go for it? or do I just forget it and reach for worthwhile summons and strong evoc?

I think that's the question. Whenever I go for Const8, I'm always disappointed, someone else seems to always rush straight for it and make everything.

It's a gamble. In all my games I've been lucky enough to reach Con 8 a turn or two before anyone else and it has won me the games. Of course the effectiveness depends on your nation and other factors. As a Sauromatia who has lucked out on site searching and has a huge death income The Chalice is really invaluable (for tartarian spam):)

Its been proven to be technically possible (tho not realistic) to research to Const 12. Doing so enables you to construct the unique indy items, should you choose to do that.

There are also several spells at construction 9, not generally considered the most powerful in the game but they can be useful nonetheless.

Why do people rush for construction 8?

Simple, it is one of the easiest ways of winning the game.

Research to const 8, grab no. 1 chalice before anyone else, then make a mad dash to tarts for a good chance to win. Signing lots of long term NAPs helps alot.

Also, well at const 8, try to pick up, the following very, very useful artifacts:-

Sceptre of Dark Regency
The Sickle Whose Crop is Pain
Hammer of the Forge Lord
The Stone Sword
The Ruby Eye
Tome of High Power
The Ankh
Black Book of Secrets
The Tome of Gaia
The Gift of Kurgi
Soulstone of Wolves
Aegis

Those, along with the chalice should give you a good chance of winning. When following such a strategy make sure you design your pretender with const 8 and the endgame in mind. Any bless you get or other benifit, such as research or site searching or ability to make a wide range of magic items or cast rituals is just a very good bonus.

This stinks IMO, People should be fighting each other, not biding time to get the goodies, lol.

NAP's are the things that need to be removed from MP the most.

After all only one can win,so why sign a NAP and make it easier on your opponents? and you?

Also the research difficulty should be max in a MP game.

my 2 cents.

Omni’s point wasn’t that its useless, just that its useless if you arrive behind a bunch of other players and all that’s left for you to forge is the Robe of Calius. Making the decision to go from Con 6 involves some strategic calculation assuming graphs are on. Some of the items to consider:

1. where are you on research graph and what paths have you already taken care of? If you have a strong lead and have enough combat spells to get by for a while, then going for Con 8 is likely an excellent choice for the reasons stated above.

2. if you are in 2nd/3rd place, you still might go for it. Try and think about what the leaders may have researched – have they cast a global? are they blood nations that probably started down the blood path? have your scouts seen them cast high level combat spells in non-Construction schools? Also, how far behind are you and what paths do you think they have? They might hit Con 8 before you but if they don’t have an N/S caster then the Chalice might not be feasible for them? Or if you are just behind them they may still be trying to get the gems to grab all the artifacts so there might be some good stuff left.

3. if you are way behind, then chances are you are better served going down another path. If you have the paths for royalty and the gems, I’d think about Conj 8 and try and grab the elementals, in particular the Air Queens. Or research Thaum to enslave and charm the Tarts that will soon be at your doorstep. :)

Make sure your tarts have MR 24 or above and laugh at the mages enslaving/charming you, as you hack them and there army to pieces.:)

In the endgame, always try to have MR 24 and above. Makes you immune to alot of anti-SC stuff.

Really?
I just managed to paralyze a 26 MR Adon.
It might have been a fluke, the Astral 8 or the communion that did it... but it still happened.
Of course, it was unexpected for both me and my foe.

Definitely boost your MR as high as you can get it but you can never be safe. Still remember playing Ironhawk and his Pazuzu got enslaved 1st spell cast in a big battle even with a way high MR. The joy and agony of the DRN...

Well, yes. I once had a MR 27 pretender that went down to a soul slay (+6 penetration) in the 1st combat round. How I cursed but it is rare.

Actually, I wonder if that can be modded so con 12 is con 9

Beyond all the posts (in a different thread, now I think about it) saying that items put in at an odd-numbered Con level wil be dropped by one level? Not a thing.

JimMorrison

What it is, is that all forging is even numbered, period. When you set the integer for forging level, entering a 1 gives you Cons2, entering a 2 gives you Cons4, etc.

If only you could do a .5 on there. :p
