Just curious. Perhaps someone knows/met in the game. Does it work properly in this case? Not bad then for a reverse communions of fighters (vampires for example)

I dont know for sure but it probably does.
Another interesting fact about holy avenger - if you cast it, and then accidentally (or not!) injure your own priest, it will pick a random enemy to attack.

Oh dear me, Ironhawk, you gave me an idea for the most amusing spell...

Sounds to me like Communion + Holy Avenger + Rain of Stones = free Smite spam (okay, free apart from the cost of any dead mages).

You could communion a whole load of vamps, have the communion master cast Holy Avenger and then leave, and they'd do heaps more damage and still be immortal so it wouldn't matter when they died.
It'd be a nice complement to doing something similar with Phoenix Pyre.

A communion+holy avenger combo sounds awesome...
I must now go and work one out.

Blood Vengeance, Holy Avenger, Fire Shield, Astral Shield, Phoenix Pyre..... Am I missing anything nasty? :p
Oh right, Soul Vortex.

Would friendly fire from soul vortex trigger Holy avenger?

Most probably - yes.

Probably. However keep in mind that the unit casting holy avenger probably has decent MR so soul vortex might not hit them. I think the original way I noticed this was due to damage from a BoW aura or something. It was a long time ago.

Heck, script a holy astral mage to (Communion Master)(Holy Avenger X4)cast spells and have someone cast Curse of Stones (or Soul Vortex, etc). That would be a GREAT way to spam smite.

In the manual it says something about the effects of HA being evoked once per battle turn. Is that once per battle turn per unit? Or once per battle turn for that side in the battle?

I can tell you with absolute certainty that each unit can only benefit from, and unleash Holy Avenger bolts once per turn, regardless of how many times they are struck. However, I'm iffy on the total. I think each affected unit can cause one bolt, but it seems spotty - spotty enough that I couldn't tell you for sure that I've ever seen more than 1 bolt per turn. ;)

I'm pretty sure I've seen multiple strikes at the end of a battle, when the last priest gets killed.
Maybe it's one per turn, but they get stored up.

Being killed while using Holy Avenger will cause 5 strikes, over the next 5 turns. That is also how many turns are run at the tail end of battle, to let poison and such run their course. They are still 1 per turn, they just come in a stream because nothing else is happening - if they die during combat, you can see the free bolts are separated from turn to turn.

I suggested something like this over a year ago.. it was widely regarded as impractical.
I don't know if it will work - but I suggest sleep clouds. The problem will be that you will have to order your priests to attack, as the AI will deprecate any spells that cause direct damage... Still it should be workable.
