Just noticed & may not hold true but Scout helos & some Light helos make very good FOOs as have high arty ratings, just dont get them killed

It's that way for several versions back already, I believe ;)

I never get my helos killed. It's the other guy that kills them!:D

This is probably a newbie question but how do I identify scout/light helos with good arty ratings when I'm picking units for a game? Moreover, have UAVs been given good forward observer abilities as well?

Buy the ones in the light helo or scout formations.
UAVs scout planes its pointless you cannot call arty from them they fly over the map & leave each turn. Any info is passed to controler on the ground

Doh! Thanks for your reply. Forgive my ignorance. I’ve never used UAVs in the game. I’d wrongly assumed that they moved on the map like helos rather than as obs aircraft.

When I would play campaigns, I would always buy a f/o as my second unit, B0, so I could keep track of it. I would always upgrade it to an attack helicopter...like an Apache. It made for better arty spotting, plus it was also good for taking out the odd tank or apc that got a little too close.

I frequently buy two scout/light helos and put one on each map edge (usually north & south) as far behind my front lines as possible and still see a bit ahead (5-10 hexes) of my front line units. Between them they can usually see most of the battlefield. That way the function as both FO's and spotters. And being far back don't attract so many MANPADS and get missed most of the time when they do, the second helo often spots an enemy MANPAD that fires at the first.
