View Full Version : Greek Army TO&E and OOB errors

There are quite a few errors in units and formations of the Greek army. I'm starting with the major units issues.
Greek army never had:
- M4A3 Sherman tanks (only the M32A1 ARV variant)
- M20 and V150 armored wheeled vehicles
- M7 Priest SP howitzers
- 81mm mortars under armor (M4A1, M125), instead of them each mechanized company use one APC (M113, Leonidas etc) to carry two 81mm mortars and their crew.
ERRORS:
- M-24 light tanks used in armored units (like the other medium tanks) and cav/recon units up until the late 80s. Many of their turrets are still in use on varius Greek islands in fortified positions.
- Greek army removed the AT-4 launcher from every BMP-1, because it was very unreliable.
- Only a few MOWAG vehicles used by Greek police during the 70s-80s.
- Mirage F1CG used only as an interceptor, and never in close support missions (with bombs).
- The first aircrafts in SEAD role are the F-16 Block 40 armed with AGM-88 missiles (during the early 90s). Greek air force never used Shrike and Martel.
- There are many guided bombs and air-to-surface missiles missing, like Paveway II, AGM-31 JDAM, Scalp EG etc.
UNITS MISSING:
- M3 Stuart: used during the 40s and 50s
- M3 White Scout Car: used during the 50s and 60s
- M18 Hellcat: used during the 50s in tank destroyer battalions
- Staghound, Humber Mk.IV and Daimler Dingo armored cars: used up until the early 60s in recon units and "gendarmerie".
- C-27J Spartan transport airplane (deployed in 2005)
- Steyr AAMG: trucks with quad .50 AA Machine Guns
- 3.7 inch mountain guns, 5.5 inch howitzers and 20mm Breda AA Guns (WW II weapons used during the 40s and early 50s)
- Many armored versions of HMMWV (such as M1097, M1118 etc) and VBLs in various roles, like FO vehicles, AT (Kornet, Milan) and GL carriers
- An armed version of the training aircraft T-2 Buckeye (with bombs and rockets) which is used in close support role.
- Newer F-16 Block 52+ with better EW capability and modern guided missiles.
- Special purpose vehicles, such as commando jeeps and ATVs
- 120mm mortars (replacing old 4.2 inch in infantry battalions since 2008).
- Many infantry units, such as Carl Gustav and LRAC teams, airmobile squads, special para units (ETA), national guard etc.
There are many more errors as far as weapons are concerned, but also most of the formations must change. Also, because the most probable conflict in Greek borders would employ naval units, there are many interesting vessels (like assault, patrol and missile boats) that could be included.
I' am trying to finish two corrected versions of obat31 (one with few mistakes but compatible with WinSPMBT ver.4.5 and one completely revised with new and corrected units, formations and even icons).

...... and when it's done I'll look at it and comments like "used during the 50s and 60s" will be far more useful than they are now

Don,
Didn't mean any disrespect. The job done in the game is unbelievably great!
To find the real info about the Greek army is extremely difficult especially for the period between Greek Civil War (1946) and "Attila Operation" in Cyprus (1974). Being Greek doesn't mean that I have much more clue (my data have many contradictions).
I will update this thread with more accurate information as soon as possible.

Don and Andy are very open to changes/corrections etc to OOBs as long as there are some proof/details. My interests are mainly in the navy so I am not that good with the greek oob (I mean in real life).
I would like to add one thing though. Due to a few reasons (doesn't matter for the game so I won't mention them), Greece has yet to receive any BMP-3s. Which is why I have stopped using them in games as of yesterday. I wish I knew when they would be available. Perhaps this year, perhaps next. No one knows yet.

zaphod72,
The Greeks may also have used the 75 mm pack howitzer (i.e. unit 530 in orbat12). The 1988 edition of Military Technology’s ‘World Defence Almanac’ claims that they had 108 in reserve in the late ‘80s. The British or Americans might have supplied them for use against communist insurgents after WW2.
The venerable 25 Pounder (unit 146) was also used slightly longer than in orbat31. It was in frontline service until at least 1988.
With regards to the Carl Gustav, the 2004-5 edition of ‘The Military Balance’ (IISS) claims that the Greeks had 2000 at that time.

Redcoat2,
From the beginning of Greek civil war the Brits were the main supplier of the Greek army until 1948-49 when the Americans took their place.
The first armor and recce units were formed with various armored vehicles, used by the British army during the war (Centaur A27L tank, Universal Carrier, Marmon Mk IVf, Humber Scout Car and Mk IV).
During the civil war, the Greek army also used four types of British made towed artillery.
- Pdr25 howitzer (remained in service until 1987)
- 5.5 inch howitzer (in service until 1955 when replaced by newly acquired M-144 155mm, but a few of them remained in reserve until 1990).
- 3.7 inch mountain howitzer (entered service in 1948 and went obsolete by 1955).
- 6pdr AT gun (in service until 1952, but also used in island fortifications until 2004).
The above information comes from the official "Military Review" magazine (Hellenic Army General Staff).

Wdll,
There is an official intergovernmental agreement on the delivery of 415 BMP-3M to Greece (signed last year), but it's still unknown the date of the first deliveries. I don't think that this will happen anytime before 2010. Also, probably it is better not to use the Kentaurus IFV, because the above agreement meant the cancellation of this project funding.

It looks like the guy who wrote the Greek section of the 1988 ‘World Defence Almanac’ did his research when the Pdr25 was still in service in 1987. From now on, I will assume the book is more accurate for '87 than '88. The availability date for unit 146 should still be updated - slightly.
If the Almanac is correct about the Greeks having 75 mm pack howitzers it may have been the Americans who supplied them.

The little info I have on the matter talks about conflict of interest between a certain well known greek company, its relationship with german armaments and its influence in certain circles in Greece. I just hope this greek goverment finaly does something because for me they are the worst government of recent times (defense related) that makes Simitis' government look like ultra nationalist.
As for Kentaurus, I don't use it anyway, I don't know how good they would be in real life, but in the game they are a bit of jack of all trades but master of none. Not enough armor, not enough ammo, apart from the TI, they kinda suck, in game terms.
Plus of course what you said.

Redcoat2,
From the same magazine (Military Review, "Obsolete Howitzers of Greek Artillery"):
- 75mm M1/M116 Mountain Howitzer, acquired in 1945 and remained in service until 1955. Some of them were in reserve up until 1990. Now, they still use a few only for salute shots.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Greeks first got them from the Brit paras sent to Greece in 1945.

Greek Tanks (Early Years)
1946-1962: The British Centaur A-27L Mk VIII (with the 6 pdr gun) is the first tank which enters service with the Greek army. After a year, and the proper training of their crews, they were used against communist guerillas, in mixed armored cavalry regiments (tanks with armored cars). They remained in service until 1962 (replaced by M-47s).
1950 (Dec)-1990: Greek army receives 206 (in total) M-24s which remained in service until 1990. At the same year they formed the 392nd and 393rd Tank Regiments (55 tanks each). Some turrets were used in fortified positions in Greek islands (until 1993).
1952-1958: 127 M-18 Hellcats form the first Tank Destroyer Regiments (397th, 398th and 399th). After 1958 and until the early 70s, Hellcats were used as training tanks.
1957-1990: After receiving over 100 M-47s, Greek army forms the first two "modern" Tank Battalions (22nd and 23rd: 3 companies with 17 tanks each). M-47 remained in service until 1990 and three more years in reserve (1993).
1963 (July): M-48 enter service. Along with the newly acquired M-113, they form the XX Armor Brigade. At the same time, some of the M-47 serving with Armor Battalions moved to the Tank Destroyer Regiments

With regards to early tanks, I think the Greeks may have received some M3 Stuarts from the British. I've found a definite official reference to 40 British Stuarts being delivered in 1950 and 1951. Some British Stuarts may also have been transferred during WW2 or during the post-war communist insurgency.

Yes, we did receive some M3 (probably from the 23rd Armored Brigade which sent to Greece in 1944). These Stuarts were used in 1948 by the XI Armored Recce Regiment.

I have gathered from SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) every information about transfers of weapons to Greece from 1950 to 2007.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Transfers of major conventional weapons: sorted by supplier. Deals with deliveries or orders made for year range 1950 to 2007
Note: The ‘No. delivered/produced’ and the ‘Year(s) of deliveries’ columns refer to all deliveries since the beginning of the contract. Deals in which the recipient was involved in the production of the weapon system are listed separately. The ‘Comments’ column includes publicly reported information on the value of the deal. Information on the sources and methods used in the collection of the data, and explanations of the conventions, abbreviations and acronyms, can be found at URL <http://armstrade.sipri.org/>. The SIPRI Arms Transfers Database is continuously updated as new information becomes available.

There are a few minor contradictions with the official data I have gathered so far (e.g. I can't find any information about the presence of M-20s and M-26s in the Greek army).

Info is a good thing.
Info from what seems a reputable source is even better.
The question is who will do the dirty job now:
1. Cross validating data and
2. Feedng them in the game?
I hope a more accurate Greek OOB will come out of this ... somehow! :)

And as much as possible with official data. :)

"I'm trying... hard!" Wrong attitude! :D. It is a hobby! Enjoy it & take it easy! It's better to take a longer path and ensure a better result, than rushing into it! Believe me, this way your effort will be better appreciated and the end result more useful! (As for me, you already have my  for even attempting an OOB revision!)

......and be aware that to be really taken seriously you don't make statements like this at the start......
There are quite a few errors in units and formations of the Greek army. I'm starting with the major units issues.
Greek army never had:
- M4A3 Sherman tanks (only the M32A1 ARV variant)
- M20 and V150 armored wheeled vehicles
<snip>
then just a few days later report this......
Transfers of major conventional weapons: sorted by supplier. Deals with deliveries or orders made for year range 1950 to 2007
<snip>
UK
(20) M-4 Sherman Tank (1949) 1950-1951 (20) Ex-UK
USA
(20) M-20 Reconnaissance veh (1949) 1950-1951 (20) Ex-US
<snip>
In the case of the sherman the gun ( and Icon ) may be wrong in the OOB but those are not ARV's

Dear Don,
Already mentioned that there are a few contradictions in the SIRPI list. For instance, the list states that the first M-48s delivered in 1959, but all the official sources of Greek origin agree that Greek army acquired the M-48 in 1963. Likewise, there is an error with the M-47 year of arrival (the correct is 1957 and not 1954). Also, in the SIRPI list there is no mention of the M-48A2C from Germany that served with the Greek army.
I posted the list because it is the only one that gives a complete picture (but with some minor errors) of the Greek army equipment from 1950 to present days.
Anyway, SIRPI is one of my sources and, of course, not the only one.

A very interesting collection of hand-crafted models of vehicles and artillery used by the Greek Army in the "Museum of the Macedonian Struggle":

Zaphod72,
the SITPRI Trade Register (http://armstrade.sipri.org/arms_trade/trade_register.php) can be a useful source of information about international arms sales/transfers. However, I suspect that some of the information is not always 100% accurate – and I am sure that it is not comprehensive. Many arms sales/transfers do not make it onto the Register – for various reasons. It also does not always include foreign weapons made under licence – and the Greek arms industry produces a variety of such weapons (from LMGs to MBTs).
The Register could provide you with clues about foreign arms deliveries to Greece that you could cross-reference against your local sources – which could be more reliable.

BETA TESTING - BETA TESTING - BETA TESTING :)
This is the first version with minor changes (can be used with present Pick List) of the OOB31.
New units are marked with a (+) and updated with a (*).
INFO FOR NEW OOB
-	Leopard 1A4(GR) and Μ-48Α5 were the first tanks using APFSDS 105mm rounds (DM23 and M735). In 1992-93 Greek army acquired M413/DM33 rounds and in 2003 the latest batch of M426/DM63.
-	In 1964 an ATGW company sent to Cyprus (Cobra jeeps). So, Greek army uses AT missiles at least from that year.
-	In 1957 formed the first motorized AT companies (one per Infantry Division) with 106mm M40 recoilless rifles installed on M38 jeeps.
-	TOW launchers entered service in 1978, with BGM-71B missiles. In 1985 Greek army acquired the first M901A1 with Improved TOW (BGM-71C) from US reserves. Upgraded in 1993 (October) with TOW-2/BGM-71E missiles.
-	The first SP Artillery system (M-52A1) entered service in 1958. I've left the M7 Priest as is (even if Greek army never had this SP howitzer), because the Pick List uses the SPA slot from 1946.
-	Leonidas II (Greek version of Austrian 4K-7FA APC) uses new type of smoke grenade launchers (2x4 at the sides of the turret instead of 4 at the back of the turret in Leonidas I). Also a MG3 machine gun can be installed at the back to be operated by the passengers.
-	Even if many BMP-1P kept their AT-4 launchers, all sources agree that none of them carries missiles. All AT-3 launchers removed from the other BMP-1s.
-	During the civil war, Greek army used British made artillery (25pdr and 5.5 inches field howitzers and 3.7 inches mountain howitzers). By 1953 most of them went obsolete and replaced by US artillery pieces (M101, M114, M203) which started entering service from 1951.
-	The first area SAM system in service with the Hellenic Air Force was the Nike-Hercules (acquired in 1960). In 1964 the Greek army acquires Hawk SAM. These went under major upgrades two times since then: in 1976 to I-Hawk version (MIM23B) and in 1996 to Phase III.
-	Small Arms: Until the late 60s infantry units were equipped with M1 Garand rifles/carbines and BARs. In 1967 the Greek army acquires FN-FALs (rifles and LMGs) to be used only with SF units (Commandos, Paras and Marines) and some front line Mech Inf Regiments. All other infantry and National Guard units stuck with M1s until 1977. In that year starts the production of G3A3/4 rifles, HK11 LMGs and MG3 machine guns at the Hellenic Arms Industry (EBO) under HK licence. In September 1991 SF units start replacing their FN arms with M16A2 rifles, M4 carbines and M60 LMGs. Greek infantry will remain with 7.62mm rifles and machine guns for the following years, since the plan to acquire HK G36 has been canceled.
-	The Greek navy uses two helicopters with anti-shipping role. The AB-212 (armed with four SS-12 missiles) and the S-70 'Aegean Hawk' (armed with four Hellfire missiles).
-	Even though, the Greek air force acquired AGM-88 HARM missiles in 1994 to be used with F-16 Block 30, I've set the starting year at 1990 because of the Pick List.
-	Other air-to-ground guided bombs and missiles that I've added in the new OOB, are Paveway, AGM-65G Maverick, Scalp EG and JDAM1000 (these will enter service by 2010).
-	Mirage F1C served as interceptor and 2000EBG have also anti-shipping role.

So what's next?
I mean are there going to be anymore additions or a "verification" phase of the proposed OOB?

My friend Hoplitis,
This is not the final edition, because I am working now on new formations (still trying to keep the compatibility with present Pick Lists). This is a 'solo' work, so there might be some errors.
