Hey all, some friends and I are thinking of splitting a copy of Dom3 to own as a group for LAN purposes (because yes, we're a bunch broke students too cheap buy individual copies) . . . is that going to fly? I know some other games are okay w/one CD key on multiple machines, just want to make sure before we order and end up with some buyer's regret.
Thanks!

I would guess that it works.
I don't know about the game's Network option but the worst posibile thing should be, that you have to manually sent each other the tohost and toplayer files from the save-game-folder like you would do in an e-mail game. That takes negligible time compared to playing, so it would still be worth it, even if the network option does not want it (and -as I said- I would allready expect that to work)

It doesn't work. If you play on the same machine, it will work (or it does for me). If not, the game checks the CD key and machine of each player in a game against the CD keys of all other players in the game. If any of them are the same CD key but a different machine, it cancels the orders on both their turns. Note that it does not check the host's CD key, only players.

Yeah, I think maybe it knows what machine wrote the file or something.

I've spent a lot of time trying to get this to work. it will NOT work using a server of any kind really. What does work though, and this is a fairly slow way of doing things, but if one person makes a hotseat game with all the nations in it. then you send the .trn file for each person's nation to each person, they do the turn, and send back the .2h file. (maybe the .trn also). the host can then save the .2h files into the savegames folder, and once he gets them all, he can host.
like i said, this is a rather slow, and annoying way of doing it, but it is the only way i've found that you can share a CD key.

Well, bummer. Maybe we'll look into setting up some sort of FTP deal to streamline sending files. Or just reroute some of the money from beer and our other frivolous expenditures. Thanks for the quick replies.

NumbRat,
We're having a sale right now (but ends today) in which you can save up to 12% of your total purchase price. If you sign up for our Savings for Scholars and Soldiers program, you can save an additional 10% off the sale price! Go here for details:

It's a great time to buy, but I'm afraid you'll have to hurry to take advantage of the combined discount. The sale ends today. The Student discount, however, is good for any in-stock purchase, anytime.

That's a pretty hefty saving Annette, can I take advantage of it now and use it to pre-order Dominions 4? :) (kneels on floor and preys to JK and KO to make a fourth)

:( Although maybe if did make Dominions 4 available to pre-order, the undoubted six figure pre-sales you'd get might give JK and KO some incentive and inspiration :)

Might is the keyword.
It continually surprises people but Illwinter has often said that money is pretty much the lowest incentive to them. Its not their day job. Its their fun-time activity.

Yes, I was aware of that GP. But surely JK + KO are two very kind hearted Gods who wouldn't want to disappoint 100,000+ faithful and devoted followers :)
Then again I guess there's a chance they could actually be two cruel Gods instead :(

Thanks for the heads up Annette, I missed out on the extra discount, but the student %10 is pretty cool (much love from us students BTW), I'll talk to my peeps.
