Hi - I know I've seen threads on this before, but I can't find them. Can someone either link those past threads or discuss here what are generally regarded as the best and worst nations in each era? I am trying to start a game with a few noobish friends and we want to choose nations of rough equality. I played a lot a few years ago but my god it's hard to remember this stuff. Thanks!

There is no best. There is only pros and cons.
Thats the great thing about this game (and why you remember so many threads on this)

Im guessing you mean best for MP.
What size map? What settings for magic and resources?
Best for the offensive player? defensive type player?
Stealth player? researcher/turtler? barbarian horde style?
Best for early game expansion? late game holdout?

Im sorry. Im just picking on you now.
The best is different for each player.
Maybe you can check out the Victorious Nations/Hall of Honor thread for some ideas.

MA Pythium and of course....

MA Ashdod= super overpowered

In particular, MA Ashdod = super versatile. I can think of some nations which are somewhat better than Ashdod at specific niches (Niefelheim has generally superior sacreds troops, for instance) but Ashdod is in the top 10% across all categories of troops/summons/mages/thugs.

LA R'lyeh is quite spiffy too.

LA-Ryleh used to be spiffed. After the nerf (Dom kill) it is now unspiffy.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts, sorry for delay in responding. Gandalf, I am considering a small 3-player mp game with a couple friends who are all pretty new to the game. Probably a map with around 100 provinces and we are likely to add in 3 odd random AI nations. Fast or normal magic research.

I will check the hall of champs, thanks again!

I'd suggest not to have any AIs from start, I had bad experience with it. The weaker ones will be steamrolled, the stronger ones would declare war at the most annoying times.

Sounds like playing MP to me. :)
