The game is finished! Kietsensei of EA Oceania has been declared the winner!

_______________________________

Hi everyone!

I'm quite a new player of dom 3, but I'm really liking it and now it's the time to host my first game:D

Now, this won't be a normal game; I want to employ many gameplay-changing mods and see how they work with each other.

The mods I'm planning to include are:
-CBM (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=43120)(We all know this one)
-CPCS (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=42165) (More early and mid game multipath spells)
-Holy War (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=42638) (Gives a lot more holy spells/units/sites, changes the role of priests by quite a lot)
-More Magic Sites (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=41189)(Adds around 150 magic sites to the game)
-Llamabeast's Streamers & Standards (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=39989)(Just for the eye candy)

The game information:

Early Age

Map:Land of Legends (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=43144)

Players: 12

-Amonchakad: Arcoscephale
-Lavaere: Fomoria
-Strabo: Ermor
-Aethyr: Helheim
-Gregstrom: Lanka
-Pelthin: Yomi
-Anthropos: T'ien Ch'i
-shard: Sauromatia
-Llamabeast: Tir Na N'og
-Dragar: Abysia
-Burnsaber: Agartha
-Kietsensei: Oceania

Settings:Everything to default except
-magicsites 50
-HoF 15

Turns:24h for the first 20, then 48h. We can go to 72 hours if requested.

Now,because of the high number of balance-changing mods, this won't be a normal game: what I'd really hope we're going to do is giving a lot of feedback on the mods' balance.
I suggest you read the changes made from the various mods.
If, while playing, you find something that you think is overpowered, useless or just unbalanced, post it in the game thread.
Also,if we all agree that something is really ruining the game's fairness, we will change it on the fly(as far as i get it,mods CAN be changed mid-game).

Soo...I think that's pretty much everything; if I forgot something, just tell me, as I said it's my first time^^
Let's see if there is enough interest for an odd game:)

I think you should test it a bit more. Those are the mods we are "trying" to use in Unsanity. They seemed to work at first but a lot of spells are screwed up summon wrong things or don't summon at all, some pretenders are bugged, cheat messages appear, nations disappeare, and once we tough it was all fixed and uploaded the pretenders the game disappeared from Llamaserver.

Oh I know, I actually got the idea from your game:)
After reading its description, I tried to merge all those mods in a SP game, leaving out only the Antilarium metamap. I think that the problem is caused by Mithology, because with it on, I had all sorts of bugs and crashes, then I took it off...bam!
No more problems. I've already played 3 SP games with the combination of mods I plan to use in this game(though I was using them separately,I had yet to merge them into a single mod)and i never had a single problem.

I'll do a couple more games with it, but I think that all your problems are caused by the Mithology mod( or possibly Antilarium).

Since he didn't include the mytheology nor the antilarium mod, his work will be much easier.

You should double-check that the magic sites and summon spells give units they are supposed to give, that gave us most headache.

Thanks for the hint, I've start doing that and in 5 minutes I've already found a couple of bugs.I'll have to reupload the mod file after I've fixed them all...the game won't start until we have enough people anyway:)

By the way, does anyone know a way to mod a map so that i can see every single site?
Looking at the mod file and double-checking all IDs is quite tedious...

Hmm, I just did a test game and the War Clerics look fine. Are you sure that you don't have any other mod active?

EDIT:I'm doing more playtesting and I'm finding more small bugs, mostly typos.I suppose I'll just keep working on it until we have the game ready.

If you find any typoes in Holy War/CPCS, would you mind taking notes of them and telling me, so that I can fix the main versions?

Well, there are many games recruiting at the moment. Filling up might take time, because people are hitting their personal limits. My personal maximum is 4 games. I'm currently in 3, but I'm saving one because when I manage to complete my UW Gameplay Enchanment mod, I need to make a test game for it. Alugra needs a test game too.

The "Testing" and the current posts about bug fixing might also scare people. Besides, it's only been what 6hours? Cripple_Fight with 13 players took 3 days to fill up.

Hey chris and Shard, welcome aboard:)

For chris: sorry but we won't be playing with SingleAge: considering that I already had some problems with merging all the mods, I don't want to have to deal with even more potential bugs and issues.
Beside that, many people have already chosen their nation from the Ea, and even if we played with SingleAge I would have never admitted LA R'lyeh anyway :p

So, for the moment I'll sign you up as Mictlan, if you change your mind just let me know.

EDIT: I've just noticed that it's thursday, so llama should join us. With him, if he still wants to join, we'd be either missing 1 player, or 3 if we want 2 water nations.
I need your opinion: do we just get 1 more and don't have water nations(it's just 18 provinces anyway) or do we specifically look for 2 more players to play 2 water nations?

I'm guessing that you mean the "Grip of the Marshlands" spell? Should be useful when combined with your low attack troops. I haven't tested if the claymen you summon in the battlefield by the "Animate Clay" spell get the dominion bonus or not.

Yeah, Tuatha Sorceresses seem like ideal candidates for Winds of [Season] spam. You also seem to have good access for several niche evocations (Shocking Pour, Spore Spread). Also "Grip of the Marshlands" has nice synergy with poison spamming + quaqmire because sliming also halves AP.

But I'm giving away all of your tricks here! Whoopsie, I'll just say what I came to say in the first place.

If you notice any bugs or typoes in the CPCS/Holy War mods, would you please report them to the mod thread (see signature in this post). Also, if you think some spell/unit/magic site is too strong or weak, please voice your opinion so that something can be done about it.

I'm the author of CPCS & Holy War, in case you were wondering and I'd be clad to anwser your question.

The changes of CPCS & Holy War are mostly global, althought Holy War slighlty changes (max changes +/- 10% in gold cost) some sacred troops. Also some mage-priests are reduced in holy power while some "pure" priests got increased holy magic.

I also brought up some hints about handling the mods in a previous thread, behold the power of copy-paste!

- With Holy War, holy sites are much more common, althought the effect is somewhat diluted by the magic site mod. My careful estimate is that about 8% of sites will be holy. All common holy sites can be found with a level 1 priest, uncommons by level 2 and rare sites by level 3. It's recommendable to send at least h2 priest out early to search some holy sites. Most of the sites do not give lots of gems, but allow access to good quality units & priests. Most of the indy sacreds can be pretty good even with a moderate bless, and some need no bless at all to be of use (Penitents, for example, are just undercosted heavy infantry, because they fight to cleanse their sins.), so it's worthwhile to search even if you don't have a bless. Most also give some gold and/or resources. Most of the holy sites are just for land, so rarely concern sea terrains. However, the "Temple of the Deeps" common holy site is still there, so holy searching underwater is worthwhile just for it.

- Be careful with the CPCS spells - consider the new options they give for your opponent against you, so that you are not completely taken by suprise by a new spell. Be also sure to check any spells that are available to you. CPCS has up-to-date complete spell list on these forums (you can find the link on the first post of the mod thread).

- Also consider the new cross-holy summoning spells (Call Guardian of X). They need precious mage-time (only one unit per summon), but the troops are pretty good, and sacred to boot. If things get hot, they might just be the silver bullet you need. For example, Guardians of the First Flame have high attack skill and a high-damage magical weapon. They might be just what you need to croak those pesky ethereal thugs. Guardians of the Throne deal nearly no damage to anything but are ethereal, high def and small size. Perfect to buy you some time on the battlefield and to exhaust enemy troops as they try hit them. Guardians of the world tree have magical ranged attack -> perfect for popping up mistform.

- The new holy spells from Holy War should also be up to consideration when you devising your combat stragedies. Just the new 3 starting spells change things. All priests can now do battlefield healing with the "Faith Healing" spell, an option that makes level 1 priests much more useful on the battlefield. "Smite Heretic" is also good for fending off any early sacred rushes. You should also note that the three most powerful new holy buffing spells (Holy Warriors + Divine Armaments + Divine Protection) are mr negates/mr negates easily and only work well with low-to medium mr troops. Penetration items can also be used to increase the effectiveness of these spells.

Actually, all this talk about the mods has given me the craving to game.

Sign me up as Agartha.

Amonchakad, you should know that finding a another sea player might take some time. Going against EA Oceania in a 18 province lake is a practically a suicide. The Knight of the Deeps will be in your capital before turn 10. EA Atlantis has nothing that could even theoratically hit them and R'lyeh isn't able to reach critical mass on its Mind Blasters in so short time.

Perhaps you could combine some water provinces to reduce the amount of water? 10-12 water provinces should be okay to a single UW nation, considering that we have two amphibious nations in the mix (fomoria & Agartha).

Kietsensei
June 19th, 2009, 04:51 AM
By the way if everyone is ok we could start as we are now. Most people seem to be busy with other games already. Land players will have 15 provinces and water 18 but we all know how hard it is for these cute mermaid to colonize outside of the water :)

If people disagree and we cannot find other players I can switch to another nation: Hinnom

Edit: Burnsaber just posted before me. He is right and another solution would be to reduce the amount of water.

shard
June 19th, 2009, 06:13 AM
Since one of the purposes of this game might be to test out the mp viability of the mods I don't mind changing my pick of Sauromatia to another nation you think that might make better use of the new spells.

Any suggestions?

Amonchakad
June 19th, 2009, 10:37 AM
Honestly, the solution about letting Oceania as the only sea nation doesn't sound bad.I haven't played Oceania much, but I know that it has many problems expanding above the surface...
About editing the map file for having less water provinces, it sounds a little complicated for me, but maybe somebody else can help with that.
So...I'd like to have the input of more experienced players: would Oceania get too powerful with 18 provinces at its disposal(considering we also have 2 amphibious nations)?

Shard, about your nation, you can choose whichever you want: we already have other ones that will help with the testing, so play the one that you feel most comfortable with:)

I don't really know, but I'd be quite happy to play with just Oceania in the sea. I can't imagine them being really scary like, say, R'lyeh, even if they are uncontested in the water. It's a shame really that we haven't included Burnsaber's Oceania mod.

Also, if we are playing with the land of legends, someone probably needs to work on starting locations. I have started in locations with as few as 2 neighbors. Which sucks pretty bad.

Turns out there's a problem with Crusade.dm, where Shrine of Sombre recruits unit 2890 instead of 2891. It probably wants fixing.

I don't know if that's an issue with the original mod pre-merge, or llamabeast's merging perl.

llamabeast
June 20th, 2009, 04:42 PM
Well it's meant to recruit bog beasts, which is why it's called the Shrine of Sombre (Sombre always talks about bog beasts), and hence should be a land site. Unfortunately I don't have the DB here to check the unit numbers.

As for diplomacy I am all for Machiavellian, i.e. you can break NAPs if you want, and people cannot get annoyed with you as a player (although they can of course get annoyed with your nation and pretender!). It's up to Amonchakad to decide though.

2890 and 2891 are copies of the sea serpent and bog beast respectively - both are defined within the dm file. It's about 30 seconds' worth of fix - I could post up a corrected file if desired.

Cradle is much too big IMO.

Land of Legends has 13 provinces/player, which is just about right. I would be against going for anything much bigger than 15 per player. It's also good in terms of the small sea. I haven't looked at the start positions though (though they can be fixed of course); one alternative might be elmokki's other map: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=43180

If everyone's ready I'll create the game on the llamaserver as soon as the map's ready, and we can start as soon as Monday,if we all upload our pretender.

Just to be clear the mod combiner doesn't screw up the sites as such, it just doesn't have the feature yet of fixing site recruitables. I'll add it when I get a chance. As for there being other issues - if you are worried, check them yourself! It is no easier for anyone else to do it.

I've added the map with the fixed starts in the first post; remember that we all start in the outer ring, and that all the provinces of the island have the "many sites" flag.

So,send in your pretenders, and we can start:)

Aethyr: No, you should make sure to use the Crusaders mod as the unit numbers are different. However it's just like any other mod, so as long as you've put it in the right directory you should be able to find it. It doesn't have a graphical banner, which makes it a little harder to spot in the list.

In the EA, there are a few nations I put in the top tier of strength. Niefl. Mictlan. Sauromatia. Lanka, xHeim.
Since part of the idea was to test crusaders, I was willing to take tien chi - but as tienchi essentially plays with an identical bless to mictlan, but with cap only sacred troops, I'm not willing to go up against mictlan in the same scenario.

I was intrigued by the idea of playing a sleeping mother of rivers as TC.
The masters of the way can summon 5 of the new sacreds. Master of the dead another. So the mother of rivers could theorecticall help support 8-12 masters of the way per turn after year 1 - increasing TC's available sacreds significantly.

Since I was going to be using motw as summoning fodder, I was going to go with Magic -3: Not often seen, and a strong dominion. Since TC has available communions, as well as all magic boosters available to it, I was going to use those to counter the magic -3.

Not enough to counter mictlan, however.

Crusader actually makes Mictlan somewhat weaker; there are many spells targetted toward enemy sacreds; and there are many early magic spells which makes cross path answers to mictlan more available to other nations.

chris: That's absolutely ridiculous, you can't go around deciding what nation everyone can and can't be. Otherwise I would join every EA game by saying; "I'll be Niefelheim. Nope, I'll be Mictlan but no-one can be Niefelheim. Nope, I'll be Hinnom, but no-one can be Mictlan" and so on.

I'm not quite sure what would be the correct way of solving the situation now. If I were you I'd just stick to T'ien Ch'i - it should be great fun in CPCS, you're not particularly likely to come up against Mictlan, and anyway you've got an advantage in experience.

Anthropos: I think you might be too late unfortunately, although Amonchakad is the one to say for sure.

Amonchakad
June 23rd, 2009, 04:51 AM
Aethyr: all you have to do is unpack the content of the .rar file in your "mods" directory inside the Dominions folder; then you'll find the Crusaders mod inside the in-game mod list(as llama said,it has no image next to it, so it may be difficult to spot). Are you sure that you've unpacked the .rar file after downloading it?

chris: Well, to be honest I didn't like either that you were just keeping some nations "reserved": I too think that you should stick to TC.

Anthropos: I'm sorry but we cannot accept you, the map is already tight with 12 players, and adding 1 more now would probably mean having to change map and postponing the game start by several days.

Aethyr
June 23rd, 2009, 05:13 AM
Amonchakad: the .rar file in my mod directory appears to be a 1.95MB file; however, when I *click* on it, I am not given an option to exract any files. I have downloaded/unpacked plenty of mods before and I've never experienced this.

Re chris: thanks, I was waiting for someone to point this out.

llamabeast

Anyway for the mod: I think the problem is that you don't have WinRAR: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm (you probably want the top one). rar files are an alternative to zip files, but an unrar program isn't packaged with windows like WinZip is.

chrispedersen

chris: That's absolutely ridiculous, you can't go around deciding what nation everyone can and can't be.

Llama, I had said mictlan in my original post. The game had gotten to the desired 12 players, with all nations chosen, and it looked as if we were headed for an immediate start.

If you read the original post, as well as burnsaber's it is stated that part of the purpose of the game is to test the mods. (ie., how many games do you know where 'if something is unfair we'll change it in mid-game' is a condition of the game?).

Since that was the case *and* the game was full (ie, nations already picked) I said I would switch to Arco/TC if there was no Mictlan because those two nations can test out the spells better.

As soon as shard said he was contemplating switching to mictlan (Ie., would pick which one he liked better, after playing with them,) I said forget it, I'll just go with my original choice.

Logically there are two possible standards:
1. No one can switch nations. In which case I'm mictlan.
2. First come first serve - in which case I'm still mictlan.

However, if you (or shard) think I was unethical or wrong in how I approached this (although how it can be a problem to say I'm willing to play TC as long as there's no mictlan) I'm willing to just drop, with no hard feelings on my side.

Gregstrom
June 23rd, 2009, 02:46 PM
FWIW, I'm with llama on this one too. Changing nation selection at the last minute is normally okay (I'd say the host would be well within their rights to veto it), but doing it on the condition that no-one else takes the nation you've just dropped is unreasonable. And going back on that change (to the extent of pre-emptively blocking even the possibility of shard changing nation choice) the moment something you don't like happens is to my mind definitely unreasonable.

chris and I were PMing a little earlier. Anyway, the conclusion seems to be that he was a bit bewildered that people (notably me I guess) objected to his nation-choice thingy, and certainly had no ill intentions so I guess it was just a mismatch in perceptions of what seemed reasonable. Unfortunately he's decided the best thing would be to pull out of the game (with no hard feelings). I was a bit surprised by that and tried to persuade him to play, but he reckons that's the best plan.

I was expecting him to post here to say that but he hasn't, so hopefully he was expecting me to.

Maybe Anthropos could play after all.

Out of curiousity is there any way at all to remotely site search for holy sites? Or a relatively cheap summon that has at least H2?

llamabeast
July 6th, 2009, 10:22 AM
No, there's no remote search spell.

Telestic animates have H2 I think, but then they can't move so they're not a whole lot of use.

It's all about your prophet basically I think.

Gregstrom
July 6th, 2009, 04:41 PM
That's interesting - Holy war: Priests and Sacreds is supposed to boost national holy priests.

Pretty much every other nation with only H1 access gets bumped to H2 somewhere, and I'm very surprised that Sauro hasn't.

llamabeast

Sorry about that. It seems that I remembered to decrese the cost of Oiorpatas but forgot to up the holy levels on the priest. Well, you can find all common magic sites with a H1 priests. Then, several of the common sites allow you to recruit H2 priests (like Preacher & Templar Abbot).

But you know, if you happen to have a province with mysteriously increasing order & magic & luck scales, it might be worthwhile to check that out with a prophet. Then you'll have all the priests you need.

Our prince Snireth Ko, commander of the knightly order of the Deep seeks wisdom through The Old Man of the Sea and it seems that Lanka won't be able to repel the nimble nemedians.
That is why, even though Oceania's sympathy goes to Lanka, we are betting 1 water gem on Fomoria ;)

I'll be expecting that gem to arrive shortly. The Fomorian people are now extinct, which explains why you don't see them in MA. Well, they're extinct except for a single Fomorian Giant who saw the error of his ways and fought with the Lankans to liberate his home from an oppressive regime.

Shard,

I have sent you a PM clarifying your misconception (which I note you have chosen not to respond to); we never had a NAP.

To the nations of the land: Sauro's arrogance has made him vunerable. Those of you who share a border with him will never have a better chance to take down this mighty foe.

We are committed to his destruction; join us and keep what you take.

The emissaries and diplomats of Sauromatia, perhaps naive and unwise to the silver tongues of the Lord of Shadow, nevertheless do try to take great care in their penmanship. This does mean however that replies aren't always instantaneous, particularly when previous records have to be sifted through.

We stand by our statements.

We have reason to be aggrieved, and consider Helheim to be our mortal foes at this juncture, despite what seems to be an alliance with Oceania and Tien Chi. For those taking an interest, rather than consider us a 'mighty foe', we humbly suggest that you may also view us as strong, steadfast allies.

Of course you stand by your statements, why should anyone expect otherwise?

The simple facts are that you rejected our offer, and while we were still discussing "counter proposals" which we earnestly emplored you to consider, you took the territory that our offer was contingent upon.

You do indeed have reason to be aggrieved: you have under estimated us. We deem the nations of the land to be too wise to be deceived by your pathetic ploy. Through your naked aggression you have shown the wind. Now, the whirlwind comes.

Amonchakad, you probably should take another look in the starting provinces if you use the same map again sometime. I ended up on a island with only 2 land neighbours and 3 water neighbours, which really limited my Ancient One production. (And of course my dominion kept on spreading into the underwater neighbours, which made my phoenix useless for expansion.) I'm not bitter or anything, s*** happens, but it's something you should be aware of.

To the Lords of the Land,

The Immortal 'F3S2E2W2S2' of T'ien Chi is no more, grounded to dust by the valiant defenders of Sauromatia. It is a pity that he of the imaginative name will not be reborn in his capital to convey the message that the partitioning of Sauromatia will not be a straightforward matter. While superior troops and strategy continue to stymie the brute force brought to bear against our lands it will only be a matter of time before the numbers will tell and we will fall.

As such, knowing its inevitable end, Sauromatia, given the straightforward incentive of gold, will more than happily concentrate her remaining might towards one of her aggressors.

To the Lords of the Land:

Sauromatia's defense of his lands has indeed been valiant. The fact that he has been able to maintain a defense for so long against so many underscores our original point: this is a mighty foe, and there will never be a more opportune time to take him down.

Do not be seduced by his dying promises. Do whatever you can to keep the pressure up and make him defend multiple fronts. Let us slay this beast.

If anyone has anything to say about the spells added, I'd appreciate if it was posted on the mod thread (see my signature for link). The idea of the mod is to make randoms more exciting and allow for more tactics on the battlefield. If you view some spell as too strong/weak/hard to use just drop a word to the mod thread so that I can fix the issue.

And if any of you have ideas for new cool spells, I invite you to suggest them. I'm often replacing spells in the mod if I notice that they aren't working as imagined they would.

Sorry for spamming these messages, but I'm going to update Holy War mod soon, which is in use in this game. If anyone has anything to say about the changes in this mod, I'd appreciate if it was posted on the mod thread (see my signature for link). There are other mods in this game that also change stuff, but the workings of the Holy War mod are easy to spot.

1) All of the new holy sites are from this mod. Are they too common? Are the recruits too good? Too weak?
2) All of the new researchable pure holy combat spells are from this mod. "Chastice", "Faith Healing" and "Smite Heretic" are from this mod too. Are they usable? Are they enough to warrant recruiting some priests after turn 20? Could they be too strong even?
3) How about the summons (a'k'a "Call Guardian of X" spells)? They're not meant to be game-breaking, just generally useful.
4) How about the common indy-priest nerf? People okay with it?

Here is a list of changes I'm already committed to doing, just in case.

- Add amonchakad's description fixes
- Templar Abbot should be cheaper 100gp->70gp
- Explain the lack of sacred status on Wardens trough description text.
- Buff Sauromatian's H1 priest to H2.
- Replace Warrior Monk's Chi Kicks, due to CBM giving the "Chi Kick" weapon +4def.
- Due to some nice modding trick, I'll likely be able to make Preachers drop to H1 casters in combat, allowing me to reduce their ridicilious encumberance.

If you don't want to give feedback because it might reveal some stragetic secrets, just PM or e-mail me. Getting all the needed fixes to the next version would make my life a lot easier.
