Reading the recent posts reminds why I love so much diplomacy games. :) No diplomacy games are just a variant of singleplayer games, period. Why play multiplayer games if you do not like to discuss with people? With no diplomacy there is no drama, there is no feeling, just pure dullnes :)

My threat to throw everything I had at you had nothing to do with metagaming. I was simply trying to break the double-team on me by threatening to go kamikaze on one of you, and I figured I had a much better chance of making a dent in you than I did in Pan, so you got the ultimatum You gave me that threat immediately after I attacked. This was two turns before Pan attacked. It was just me, who was clearly militarily weaker than you were (I had no ready SC at the time; you had two). In fact, at the time, you were indicating to me that you rather expected Pan to come after me.

Secondly, all your hurf-blurf about my aggrieved posturing - I was upfront about my reasons, and that you needed a counter after pythium evaporated. It was surely you acting all aggrieved. But my other immediate rationale was quite real - you were elbowing in on those few scraps of territories that were due to me. That's how it goes. If you treat an ally with contempt, you should not act all shocked when he ceases to be your ally.
I still have no idea what you're talking about with Holburg. As I said, I took it to preach there to kill Pythium, and you never asked about claiming it after thatOur agreement during the height of the war was that I would get all the remaining pyth territories currently not in your possession. That included Holburg, as it was still pyth's. I then said I was moving in to take both those territories. You later took it to preach/cut off retreat. , but watching you try to cast me as the villain after you launched a sneak attack at me is quite irksome. You can trump up whatever pretexts you want, but at the end of the day you stabbed me in the back to try to get an advantage, which is fine. The farce of you pretending otherwise is what I take exception We had no formal agreement extending beyond the fall of pythium, so I can't quite consider this a backstab. As to trying to cast you as a villain - I was not the one to bring this to the thread.

In fact, at the time, you were indicating to me that you rather expected Pan to come after me.

Which was sort of true at the time :) I was sure Van would be after me, what with me having a low dominion and Van being able to blood-sac -> My dominion was close to get wiped around that time if Van had started a blood-sac campaign (but I have since learned that fear was unrealistic at the time). I even moved an army to the wastelands next to the Van border to take an indy barbarian province, but to also act as a first line of defence *and* to protect the temple I just built there. I pledged Agartha to help me in case Van attacks, as I had already run out of clean underwear because of the death-bells I heard gonging in my head. Agartha wasn't super keen, but said something along the lines he would be available after the Pythium business if the issue was still pressing.

Then of course I had the pleasure of having scouts in the area where you two were quarreling, and saw an opportunity. My dominion situation rapidly was improving with the new temples up. Thus I had second and third thoughts, and reversed course totally. I think I was able to do a pretty classic backstabb on Agartha (not that I am especially proud of that, I don't usually do such blatant backstabbs without a moral casus belli whatsoever; but as it is the theme of the game and because I could...), which I hope Micah won't hate me for the rest of his living days :smirk:

...No diplomacy games are just a variant of singleplayer games, period.
Yes absolutely. And zero diplomacy SP games are exactly what I want out of my MP games :)

Why play multiplayer games if you do not like to discuss with people?
Dominions is the only game I have ever done (online) multi-player gaming with. Everyone has their own reasons why they start playing MP games, but for me the one and only reason why was that I really loved Dominions 3 as a strategy game, and I just purely wanted to have better AI opposition. As I had played against the AI for 18+ months before playing MP, and I had finally run out of variant ways to handicap myself, or role-play against it. And the only way to get better AI opposition was to turn the AI opponents into human opponents.

I personally have no interest in the diplomacy side of MP games, as I'd prefer my fortunes to be based entirely on my actions and strategy in-game, and not on whether or not I can sweet-talk, bluff, threaten, plead, with my various neighbours. I have every respect for players who like the diplomacy aspect of MP games, and even to some extent envy those who are good at it. But for me diplomacy plays far too big a role in MP games, as it doesn't matter who you are, or how good or bad you are, diplomacy can counter-act everything. It is very common to see players making in-game decisions purely based on which player, and not which nation (or it's actions), they border, or can attack, or feel most threatened by.

I also think diplomacy in this sort of game is un-thematic, as if for no other reason than I can't believe for a moment that the nations would all share a common tongue, so communication between them would surely be difficult. Or that vastly differing nations would instantly get along as neighbours. Because there is no in-game mechanic for diplomacy, this results in there being no restrictions on which nations can team-up together. And of course the overall sticking-point of there can be only one.

In some ways I think diplomacy is the ultimate game balancer in Dominions. But I personally don't like the thought of there being something that is powerful enough to entirely negate a players skill level. And while it rarely happens that skill level is completely negated by diplomacy, even the greatest player(s) on offer would lose very quickly if surrounded by poor players who simply agreed to all attack the good player for no other reason than he/she was a good player. I've seen several well known players post on the issue of getting ganged purely because of who they were, and nothing to do with their nation or actions. And to me that is just wrong. As every player should start every game being completely equal in status (baring which nation they are)

And all of that rambling is why I like RAND games the most :)

And all of that rambling is why I like RAND games the most :)I pretty much agree completely about diplomacy. That said, I do miss being able to discuss unusual happenings with my opponents in RAND games. For me, probably the perfect game is one that allows communication, but with an honorable group of players who agree to not make any kind of deals with it.

If that is the case, could someone explain to R'lyeh that it was a bad idea to teleport one of their starspawns to attack Atlantis? Of course, R'lyeh is welcome to waste gems and mages teleporting to get killed by my province defense, but still, be careful when you say 'allied'. Oceania and R'lyeh might be, but Atlantis hasn't had contact with them. Except for that unfriendly starspawn, I mean.

Or that vastly differing nations would instantly get along as neighbours. Because there is no in-game mechanic for diplomacy, this results in there being no restrictions on which nations can team-up together. And of course the overall sticking-point of there can be only one.

There is in-game diplomacy: Sending messages, gold, gems, items. Also known as tributes.
Nations never needed a common tongue to communicate. They need one tongue both nations can share, lie the old language used for Pantocrator liturgy before the Pantocrator fell. Spaniards managed to make allies in Mexico to fight the Aztecs without knowing the language for instance, so it's not really a problem.
I respect the fact that one may not like the diplomatic aspect of the game, but I think Dominions is a game about becoming the only ruler of the world, and there is not just war to achieve this. There is also dominion push/preaching, for instance, but there's also diplomacy. War is a side effect of diplomacy. In reality, most nations would rather convince their neighbour to give them a territory than enter war to seize it. War is a side effect of diplomacy, and no-diplomacy games are only realistic if there are few exactly 2 or exactly 4 nations: 1 vs 1 is pretty obvious. 4 results in 2 1 vs. 1 fights. If it's 3 vs. 1, one of the three is going to get a bad position and be killed by his former allies if he ends in the middle. In a 3 players game without diplomacy, one player is most likely to lose because of geography (hello Mr InTheMiddle). I think it's worse than losing because of lac of diplomatic skill.

Euhm, Pan being described as the menace? What has the world come to :(

Pangea pledged for an alliance, was crawling on her knees in front of both of Vanheim and Agartha, but all that was got was evil laughter (it still echoes in my head) and finger pointing (or that was how the Pangaean scribes deciphered the hieroglyphs, at least), from both of these evil neighbours. The hands of Pangea have thus been tied, there has been no other alternative but to undertake operations of pro-active self-defence.

Besides, the pro-active self defence operation on Vanheim was a near epic fail. Only two provinces fell instead of the six I had planned; why are you people going so bananas with PD? Don't you have a single nice thought for the poor little sneakers or the poor fluffy animals dwelling in the forets?

Bold comments, most likely meant to make me feel immortal while you crush me :D Hopefully we can have a good fight though :)

In a few turns everybody will have so many counters to manikin it's not fun at all; they are so yesterday pretty soon. Besides, hopefully somebody gets Dispel soon, my population is dieing like a flies in a DDT fog :( As Vanheim is perhaps the most dangerous nation (of the ones remaining), it wasn't much of a difficult choice even to take this rather drastic pro-active step. If Pangea (and the potential others swooping in on Vans like vultures) can not stop Vanheim *now*, Van will walk home with this game; they get stronger and stronger by each turn passing.

Micah
September 6th, 2009, 04:15 PM
Agartha's final attack on Vanheim killed almost a whole thirty troops and zero commanders, clearly they are now crippled and unable to defend themselves properly.

Or they are just continuing their diplomatic campaign of untruths to gain an advantage. You be the judge.

Vanheim's SC Ghost King has awoken, their troops are second to none, and they can blood sacrifice. Coming to their aid now or ever is a grave mistake.

archaeolept
September 6th, 2009, 05:05 PM
I think who has been telling untruths is pretty clear. Micah is so sore that he is willing to spin against me from beyond the grave. Why would he just mention that one battle, when clearly I lost a hundred this last turn. I have only a handful of troops left, and one of my castles will be breached next turn, the other the turn after. Anyone w/ eyes can look at the troop graphs - Pan has pretty well 10 times the forces as I do. And how am I to blood hunt when my lands are about to be over-run? Why is my dominion so middling then? And how is it that a single ghost king is supposed to withstand massed manikin? Only a total dominions noob would take his claims seriously.

Now, I understand, following your own tactics, I should abandon my castles and head out to fight some lesser threat.

As to why your final attack was so poorly executed, I'll let you dwell on the reasons.

Jarkko's spin is self-evident. Micah's just petty.

Micah
September 6th, 2009, 05:55 PM
Why would I mention that last battle? Because it is the one you referenced (my suicidal attack.) Your subsequent loss to my PD was your own tactical blunder, though all you lost were some huskarls and your ictyid mercs, which the army graph rates the same as skinshifters and einheres.

And my listing of your national strengths wasn't there to say you could hold off Pan, just as a reminder that helping you out might not be in the other players' best interest.

Anyways, I really liked the idea and settings for this game. I wasn't very well prepared for it as I was a last-minute sub, and certainly wouldn't take the same strategy as I did. Vanheim itself is a bit hurt by the settings, as it is so gold hungry, and my placement was... unfortunate.

Hopefully there'll be another one like this soon, as I should be out of this in a couple turns. I'd suggest modifying carrion woods, and limiting dom to 8 or so.

It's not going to be over *that* quickly. You still have a pretty large army of good sacreds with a good bless, and those sacreds cause an awful lot of casualties before they die.

It was a very close battle back around t16. I'd not fully understood then how best to use my undead boosting spells: I took a lot of damage from banishment I didn't need to, and very few of my troops had Unholy Power. I like to think I'd probably have defeated the remnants of your force even if you won, as I had my pretender and about 100 units uncommitted, and plenty more magepower which I'd held back to acquire a vital new research level.

A quick question: Is *everybody* going to raze their castles and labs as soon as a lone satyr has been sighted in the distance? Don't you know the castles are culturally important heritage? What are our grandchildren going to tell to their grandchildren?

"Come now here Clark. You are still so very young, but let me tell you a story of this field. You see, there used to be a great city here once upon a time, but then a young satyr, not much older than you in fact, happened to walk by. That young satyr was my grandfather. When the inhabitants saw my grandfather stroll by over the hills there (do you see those hills there far away? yeah, it is sort of difficult to see them from here, even though it is a sunny day today), they all went 'OOOooooooOOOooooOOOooo!!!' and then they burnt their city, ripped away all the stones from the walls, hammered the stones to sand with their bare fists, filled their cellars with the sand and then commited mass-suicide. Yes, I know, it is a sad story."

Oh, and Ashdod tried a backstabb too, but to be honest, it was quite a pathetic attempt... I seriously suggest a bacstabb to be tried with something else in addition to a dozen or so slingers. Instead of a backstabb it was really only pat on the shoulder. You do *not* want to give the target a heads up, you want to hit their back so hard they can't find their nose anymore.

Three times now. Agartha, Vanheim and the latest to join the club appears to be Arcos. This time there were no satyrs even within hundreds of miles, so something else must have been scaring this time

All hail the new ruler of Ashdod! Your friendly neighbour Pangaea wishes you a long and healthy rule. Pangaea would take it as a token of friendship if we were to see the Ashdod troops get away from our common border; seeing giants stroll right next to the twin-city does not make one feel comfortable in these uncertain times...

Yes, the Inquisitors surely did pull a holy veil of secrecy over their true intentions, and cleverly withheld the small print on their deceitful peace deal. "Marignon agrees peace with Machaka, that is until those damn spiders are far away from home".

Man regrets that while its calls for help fell on two eager pairs of ears, it is unfortunate that only one pair of sinewy ears sought to genuinely help the beleaguered Wardens. While to the other pair, all outside prayers for help were soundly deafened by wrinkled and cauliflowered ears, that are obviously the result of decades of unhealthy Mitre abuse.

The Lord Wardens hereby offer their thanks and condolences to the fallen yet brave Spider worshippers. For while Man's idea to use spiders to catch flying pests was a good one, we should have heeded the warnings the web masters voiced towards their untrustworthy, Jesus loving neighbours.

vfb
September 12th, 2009, 07:40 AM
Oh no, the nation of Marignon was completely willing to abide by its ceasefire with Machaka, until we discovered that Machaka had brutally launched a surprise invasion of Caelum, ignoring their diplomatic agreement to give three months notice before launching any aggressive acts.

At this point we decided that Machaka was not worthy of our trust, and we had better commence military defensive posturing before we were likewise attacked. So Marignon positioned ourselves in a strategic location in the mountains, through which the spiders had recently passed on their expedition to the Bandar capitol. We were attacked by the spiders the next month, at great loss of many brave flagellants.

We have no idea who this "Jesus" is though. There is but one true god, Smaug, and Riego is his Prophet.

First off....sneak attack? I don't know if that is the appropriate term....
While my cyclops was under-equipped, and losing him was certainly a mistake, it wasn't exactly by choice, as i can't really forge the amulet of antimagic i needed. In terms of overall troops losses though, there was little disparity between us. I have never had much of an army due to gold constraints

I must admit I had forgotten the strength of Marignon's PD.....

Of course it was a sneak attack! Your army snuck up to Marignon's border, and attacked without any provocation on our part, and without any declaration of war, or even any sort of excuse about posthumously defending your neighborly spider friends or such nonsense.

Not that there is anything wrong with a nation of sneaky folk like Eiru sneaking around and attacking people though, it's only to be expected from such ruffians and brigands. But why would you attack Marignon, bastion of purity, defender of the sacred virgins, and sworn enemy of the evil blood hunting nations? Evil blood hunting nations whose lands would likely feeling the righteous wrath of the legions of Marignon, right now at this very moment, were we not otherwise occupied by defending our borders from rapscalions like Eiru.

Episcopus Servus Servorum Smaug

Praise be to Smaug, we seek His help and ask for his pardon. We take refuge in Smaug from our wrongs and bad deeds. Who ever been guided by Smaug will not be misled, and who ever has been misled, he will never be guided. we bear witness that there is no God except Smaug-no associates with Him- and we bear witness that Riego is His slave and messenger.

It should not be hidden from you that the people of Pan had suffered from aggressive dominion spread, iniquity and injustice imposed on them by the Abysians and their collaborators; to the extent that the Maenad blood became the cheapest and their wealth as loot in the hands of the enemies.

Though Marignon is beset by the bandits of Eriu, we recognise the dire threat the evil Abysians pose to the world, with their terrible blood sacrifices, and summoning of unspeakable horrors. We hereby declare war on Abysia again, just in case you didn't hear us the first time. And we hereby rescind our declaration of war on Pan, and may they do what they want with their own peoples, for Smaug has told us that the people of Pan are blessed, for they have recognised the evil of Abysia.

Our Lord, bless Riego, Your slave and messenger, his family and descendants, and companions and salute him with a salutation. And our last supplication is: All praise is due to Smaug.

I've added a day in total to this host time, due to what would seem to be confusion.

the confusion stems from overlooking the distinction between "start thinking about going over" and "actually doing so". :)

qm is the one to make such a decision, but he has not as of yet done so.

Ah right, many thanks for the clarification Archae :) I thought there'd been a decision on the IRC or something regarding switching to 48hours, and the post here referring to it was just aimed at canvassing further positive support for a decision that had possibly/probably already been taken on the IRC.

The very evil and very false god of Ashdod is dead! The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and you can't get much bigger than an Ashdod giant.

I'll be damned if I let Ashdod backstabb fair Pangaea a third time in the same game... Yes, this means Pangaea is going to pacify the giants for good this time.

Folks,

Can someone help me with a technical question on this game? Somewhere in the early parts of the thread I read that while the magic site frequency is set to zero there is still the base terrain chance to find sites. Is my understanding correct?

Cheers,
Maer

Agema
October 8th, 2009, 11:51 AM
Yes, mostly. Although frequency is set to 0, sites are not nonexistent, just extremely rare.

It may be worth searching, a few of them will turn up. In fact, looking at the graph, at least one nation has had magic sites change by a multiple of under 5, which I think means someone has definitely found a magic site or two.

Maerlande

Thanks Agema. I've been browsing this thread and a bunch of others to try to understand. I'm still kind of confused but I'm getting the idea.

Micah
October 8th, 2009, 01:15 PM
The terrain modifier doesn't account for the full chance of a site. I ran a test game with 0 sites and still found some in plains and farmlands. (It was on Glory of the Gods, in case there might have been some sort of "high magic" tags lurking around under the terrain type. I didn't check that thoroughly, although the sites weren't in any conspicuous locations like standing stone icons or the ends of peninsulas or the like, they just seemed randomly spread.)

The Ashdod giants should have picked their fight a bit more smarter. Challenging a horde of manikin with a few giants is *not* the way to go (you need those slingers and archers, and lots of them, plus anything doing lots of AoE damage; the manikin have zero protection, so killing hordes of them is no problem, as long as you don't get hit yourself, because the manikin tend to stun whoever they get in contact with). Pangaea is all about happines, flowers and humming birds, but being backstabbed twice by same nations is slightly annoying... Especially as Ashdod killed the prophet of Matonen with dastardly and evil assasination spells, that was really the final drop, grrrrr.

In other news, could R'lyeh please ask the Starpawns to spawn somewhere else than in Pangaean lands? It gets boring to kill the spawning Starspawns every turn, you know. Give them a map or something before sending them through the void gate, and remind them that land =/= water, target water when jumping out of the void, not land!

Speaking of horrible losses, Smaug will temporarily unavailable for confessional while he once again navigates the paths of the underworld. His prophet, the apparently unkillable diplomat Riego, is still alive and kicking, and will preside over Church ceremonies and inquisitions in Smaug's absence.

Marignon bestows our blessings on Man for giving Smaug the pleasure of paying a visit to the recently departed. And we also appreciate Man's efforts in eliminating the health benefit costs for a few mages who had seen better days.

Brong is confused that the followers of Smaug seem happy at the dispatching of their hissing God. But if that is indeed what pleases them, then we wish them well with their many endless months of genuflecting to return him to this war-strewn plane.

But be warned that those who are devoted to Brong will not be so readily converted to follow the words of another, and a repeat fate awaits Smaug and his foolish flock should they again return to attempt the spreading of their false preachings.

Elsewhere, Brong welcomes the sudden arrival of our new neighbours at the site where an omni eyed ruler of giants previously sat upon his throne. And one wonders if they are going to be friends to their deprived nature loving cousins?

Abysia and Atlantis decided to throw their act together, and attacked fair Pangaea. Why can not the forest dwellers be left to live in peace and write some harmonous poems? :(

Although I have to say the attempt from Atlantis was pitiful. I would love to roll on the floor laughing at that "attack", but honestly, the attempt was so sad that I am simply too embarrassaded on behalf of Atlantis. Surely sending in commanders *alone* against Pangaea (I mean *Pangaea*, who is famous for eating commanders for breakfast) wasn't that brilliant stroke of geniousness, was it? To make matters worse, the commanders were the damn excellent H3 priests, who was sent for some pretender knows which reason into a province with absolutely zero manikin. For next round, please bring along *lots* of chaff, so that you wouldn't have to face similar embarrasments again; losing thugs to PD Harpies is possibly the second worst fate of any wanna-be hero (the worst fate would be to get kileld by markata PD...) after all.

On the other hand, I am quite impressed by the Abysian effort. Ok, so Abysians made some blunders too (and I am most delighted for that, the charts would look so bad without them), but I have to say that attack by 34 commanders (I suppose that is about every single warlock Abysia has ever recruited, right? I certainly hope no unscrupulous nation will take advantage of such a silly concentration of commanders so far from home) supported by a huge (for non-Pangaean standards, that is) army was excellently performed. I lost nearly two percent of my armies, and it hurts me inside :( Free spawn have feelings too, you know :(

Ermorian onslaught? Foul, treacherous lies!

Twice Ermor has had a surprise assault launched against us. Firstly by Mictlan, then at the end of that war, Ulm sought to crush our exhausted forces. Ermor has been on the defensive throughout; three times Ulm has besieged and stormed our northern fort and three times narrowly been repulsed; even now, Ulm holds territory that was Ermor's prior to their sneak assault.

If the tide has turned, it is no less than the cowardly opportunists of Ulm deserve!

Ah, but the warlocks have to have wings to be able to fly, no? There is always the danger of wings getting cut once the abyssian demons meet one of the proper Pangaean armies. It is unfair that the Pangaean PD always have to bear the brunt when evil nations attacks, but the harpy spawns have proven their worth tim and again; yet do not expect such an easy joy-ride in the coming battles. someone please declare war on me and come kill me so that man doesn't get my capital.

That's a nice sporting gesture I must say.

I battle back over many turns from the brink of defeat against a far superior enemy, that started the war in the first place, and now that same enemy is trying to deny me a profit from any victory I may achieve.

Man has more or less been Caelum's only opponent all game, so I'd be pretty pissed if someone came along and stole the prize at the last minute without doing anything to earn it. Especially if Caelum helped them to do it by 'gifting' them their capital. Asia Twist anyone?

There is such a thing as saying 'Well Done' to your opponent, and accepting a defeat with pride and dignity if you have lost a fair fight. Offering your only asset to a random neighbour who has had absolutely nothing to do with the relevant fight all game is certainly not very sporting in my books.

But then I learnt ages ago in life that not everyone accepts defeat graciously.

P.S. I wouldn't even mind if you (man) killed me... I obviously had no idea you have had no reason to play for ~40 turns, as you say, as there is no way I could know such a thing. And this actually comes as a shock to me given how enthusiastic I felt you were about this game. This latter remark I judge from the incredible frequency with which you sent me PM's in the early part of this game, mostly during the turns we were allies and not enemies. Although you still sent many PM's when we were enemies. So for you to now suddenly claim you have had no reason to play, basically from more-or-less the start of the game, is very surprising to hear indeed.

Although to say you have been wasting your time almost exclusively for the benefit of me enjoying a game is a very bizarre statement that I don't understand at all I'm afraid.

And I apologise if what I said insulted you, but I found your original comment very insulting. As from my point of view, that comment came across as saying "I'm about to lose to you, but you're not getting the prize you've been fighting for, as I'm going to give it away to the first random person who comes along. So Na-Na-Na-Na-Na".

You have edited your message, but I saw the original, so I will reply.

Yes I convinced Machaka to break their NAP with you and attack you. NAP's mean little in this game, so I didn't consider this to be a terrible incident. You gave me full notice of cancelling our NAP, which you honoured, and which is a credit to you. But the circumstances were vastly different I feel. You decided to attack me, your ally against Bandar, as I was by far the easiest target for you at the time. And like you said yourself, attacking in a different direction would run the risk of you encountering Pan. Which you didn't want to do at all.

As a result of your attack, and given you were over twice the size of my nation at the time, and the big advantage of flying mobility in a small area, I felt my only chance of survival was to turn to diplomacy, and find help against you asap. Frozen Lama / Machaka answered that call, for which he has my thanks. But the only losers in that very brief affair were actually Machaka themselves, who fell to a mirrored stabbing fate against Marignon. I guess there's a good lesson in there regarding 'Do unto others', as the saying goes :)

You say you have been waiting dozens of turns for me to kill you. Again, how the hell I'm supposed to know such things is beyond me. Or even why anyone would think that way / take that approach, during in a game. I admit some of your play has surprised me at times, but I have never played in a game with you before, and everyone has different ways of playing the game. Plus I have played in less than a dozen MP games to date, so I have far from a full book of example play-styles to judge players upon. So surprising play to me may be normal play to others.

I apologise in advance if I have said anything to again offend you. But many of you comments and remarks here make no sense to me at all, and indeed contradict almost all of your other actions. This makes it difficult to predict or judge any result that may occur from my own comments on this matter.

namad

this war was fun but you won it 20-40turns ago :)

obviously you can't see my .trn files so you can't tell how badly I am doing.... but... I figured after a few dozen turns of doing awful you'd eventually figure it out... now the problem is i can't make you kill me...

because if i gode you too much and then somehow you get unlucky and lose too many troops or commanders... then i seem like i lied and tricked you... but see... if someone else attacked me... well..

they might have had positive income at some point during the game and they might have a force 100times as powerful as mine instead of only 10times as powerful

I mean... not only have I not won any battles at all during this war, I haven't even managed to inflict 10% as much loses as I've sustained and not only that but there have been like 8battles in 45turns maybe less than 8? you have to admit this has been the most boring war ever, eh?

It's hard to fight a war with -200income (I took turmoil1luck3 because if I did very well and had many territories and a chance to win the added income over turmoil3 I felt would've been worth it... and if I wasn't going to win I wasn't going to win) every turn and no non-national gems and no trading while yes there were strategies I could have come up with that would've worked to defeat you they would've required the war to be twice as long as it has been and I'd probably have gone AI after 80turns of this :) so I tried making some giant random foolish attacks in the hopes of catching you off guard and obliterating you via some happenstance... (if you were able to predict all my good plays and prepare for them I figured bad play might work better than good play... and even if bad play didn't work well it would at least end the war faster even if it only gave me a like 10% chance to win.... now in hindsight bad play was somehow even easier for you to predict than good play but I couldn't've known that at the time)

while I was typing this long post I lost like 80% of my national resources :) technically I could've done a lot better if I was on defense every single battle but like I said I didn't have the patience to stall you for another 20turns now that I've taken such heavy loses no matter how hard I try to stay alive I wouldn't be able to last more than 10turns, problem solved!

I can't be sure but judging by how shortly before the hosting I posted I have a feeling abysia planned that attack before I called for it... which is quite an odd coincidence if true!

"Fair" Pangaea? From that Carrion Woods, it's more like decaying and decomposing!
What is this "Carrion Woods" thingy you are mentioning? Fair Pangaea has nothing to do with death and rot, even though perhaps sometimes in the distant past even some slightly sinister ways might have been forced to be utilised.

Incidentally, to interpose with something moderately important, can I request a 24h delay to Saturday 22.00 or so?

Apologies everyone for all the recent Man stales. Some recent events in Real Life have resulted in me no longer having any control over where I go or what I do.

As such I am sadly going to have to step out of this game, and request a sub be found to lead the further fortunes of Man. I'll try to post a sub-hunting thread, but may not have time as I am literally about to board a flight. So if no thread appears, can I kindly ask QM to sort something out sub-wise.

Sorry again for the stales and for not being around recently to sort the problem out.

I'm talking with a potential sub for Man on IRC. QM, you available to negotiate? :) As my neighbour and ally in the game I sure would prefer that Man not stale more.

Maybe a delay QM?

Who played Man this turn? I need to talk to the player as Ryleh. We bumped accidentally.

We would like to inform the living nations of the world that ulm wont be able to contain the undead hordes for much longer.

Bah! The horde isn't your problem. There's barely a single unit in my entire roster - undead or living - than can do more than chip the polish off the armour of those damn Ulmish tanks. It's the Evo that hurts.

:(

When I got home yesterday in the evening, I started to make my turn. Trying to send it, and I had no connection. Tried over and over again, no dice. Prayed that somebody would ask for delay, but alas that did not happen. Thus I staled :( To add salt to the wound, the connection seems to be working now just fine...

There were probs with llamaserver last night. That said, Aby staled too. Shouldnt have been too bad a turn for you?

Marignon is happy to see that Abysia has woken from their slumber, and hopes their fearless leader is not feeling too horrible at the moment.

The Council of the Death Wyrm has got some ants in their pants, and have organized themselves an invasion of Man. So, wake up, Man! 90 minutes to hosting, and your turn's not in. We promise that fighting Marignon will be much more fun that sitting around on Caelum's capitol forever.

Thanks also to Pan and C'tis for some nice spectacular battles for us spectators.

The war on four fronts begins to take its toll even on the forces of fair Pangaea. C'tis has all but been knocked out (just their pretender left, and I finally got enough manikin to the front to take care of her next battle) though, and R'lyeh has just one army left (Ether warriors!) which will be dealt with next turn). Agartha has rejoined the fray with two massive armies (I guess they are running low on money and have to do *something*) and will prove a hard nut to crack (happily Pangaea has three decent sized armies in the area, so it will be a guessing game at who hits whome and where :) ).

Can't say this game has had a quiet lull for me, non-stop 100% action all the time on all fronts :D

Maerlande
December 7th, 2009, 03:09 PM
Don't be fooled! Ether warriors are just a side issue. Beware the massed evocations and thaumaturgy. But then, you've lost a thousand or so to that before.

I have a strange proposal. It appears that there are few takers for subbing Abysia due to the micro challenges and the late game.

I would be willing to take over Abysia and we may have found a possible sub for Ryleh. Of course, that means I have extra intelligence on the Ryleh position, but Abysia and Ryleh have never been neighbours so it would be drastically different. The most affected by this proposal is Pangaea so I'd like to hear your opinion Jarkko.

Otherwise, we are in the difficult position that QM is out, Man is barely playing due to RL issues, and the game is stalling out.

Oh I should mention that I am a fairly good Abysia player with lots of SP and some blitz experience. And I currently have time to handle the micro.

Looking forward to the discussion.

Cheers,
Maer

A few thousand maenads here or there doesn't an army make. Besides, my pans neeeded to take it slower for a while, they are godly sex-machines after all, but there are only so many hundred females they can keep satisfied a given day... ;)

Hi Folks,

My busy ness looking for subs has gotten me a new job. QM has set me up as admin for this game.

So I'll see if I can get the sub situation sorted out today so we can continue.

Cool Immaculate
It's at 48 hours but we've been extremely generous with delays.

I have lined up a temporary sub for a few turns so we can keep going. Please PM me your email and I will send you a turn to preview.

Let me know if 48 hours is okay. I don't imagine anyone would mind 60. We've been stuck all week looking for subs.

Man did not get his turn in. Can we please get a sub for Man? Only some timely fleeing with extreme cowardice saved a couple of his thugs from certain destruction this month. Once brave Black Servant held his ground too long and was roasted for his efforts.

I sent Calahan a PM but did not hear back.

P.S. Immaculate, here is CB1.5 (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=43120)

Damnit- i played the wrong turn... i played the turn that was sent to me originally thinking it was the turn to play then submitted it and realized the turn i got from the server late this afternoon is the turn to play. I will need even more time; so sorry... I think i have the right turn now. Sorry to waste your time (i sort of know what i want to do now but i still need to give all the orders again)

Maerlande- sorry to hold things up- i think there was some confusion.

Do we have any plans for slowing down the hosting schedule for the Holidays? I'll be home, but usually I don't fire up the computer that much between Christmas eve and New Year, prefering to spend the time with my family.
