NEWS:

Ok, the game is started. Everything seems to roll smoothly and I was able to receive and send my turn for R'lyeh fine.

Please note that one of the land starts is now empty and it will give a slight advantage to those nations who start near that empty start. Other nations are highly encouraged to take this advantage into consideration when bondering their diplomacy.

Thanks for everyone for sticking out through the bug-hunting process.

Introduction
Important, must be read before sigining!

The idea of this game is to create an action packed game with the special map that is lacking in choke-points and surrounded by water. The players will start on clearly marked fixed starting positions placed at the edges of continent. No player will start in the clumps of wastelands in the middle.

We will be testing and using 2 mods in this game. CPCS, short of CrossPathCombatSpells adds 36 new crosspath combat spells, mostly for early game and late game use. There is a full on-line spell list for the mod, just follow the links in my signature.

The another mod, UWGIM, short from Underwater Gameplay Improvement mod changes several things to make it easier to get out of water and to get into water, in order to allow water nations to actually participate in the game. There is a full lsit of changes by the mod in the mod thread. See signature for details.

Players are expected to fight for the bitter end. The Baalz's good player pledge is a requirement to join this game. The province count per player isn't too high and victory condition is actually achievable. This should hopefully result in a action-filled game full of drama, hitting for a epic finale before turn 80.

All settings are not etched in stone, the map will change for example if we can't achieve enough players for Panganea. So if somethings really buggin you, speak up and I'll see what I can do.

Nation selection is handled on a "first come, first served" basis, but all three water nations must be on the game (players should remember that all of them get new treats by the UWGIM mod, they should be more fun to play now). Hinnom can be picked, but it will be granted a special start in the middle of the desert cluster at the west side of the continent to give it a thematic handicap. Sauromatia, Niefelheim, Caelum, Fomoria will be given somewhat poor starting locations with only 2 neighbours should they be picked. This might result in a situation where players can deduce where these special nations start (start locations will be marked on the map.tga), but if you are one of the 5 nations affected by this, I think that the nation can handle the heat.

There is a problem with players not bothering to read all of the first post before joining, so, as a finale, I'm going to test you if you read all of this. When you sing up, you NEED sneak in a password "Jenga!". It doesn't have to be in any context, just type it in the post where you announce your participation to this game. If you don't say the password, your signing will be put on hold until you do. This might seem silly, but I want to be sure that the players know what they are getting into and agree with the terms of the game.

Also, because no-gem-gen mod eliminates Blood Stone as an earth Booster, Peddle Skin Suit is moved to construction 6 with a cost of E4B1 to compensate for the lack of second earth booster.

I'm really familiar with the mod in question. This is game is quite "moddy" already, adding more might scare players away.

Hmmmm, I've been wanting to give Hinnom another look in a MP game since the nerf. With no blood stones and a handicapped starting position maybe I can do that without feeling too guilty. If anybody objects too much to me taking Hinnom I don't mind picking something else, maybe a nation like Jenga?

Just a question on the nations w/more difficult start locs. Why are Mictlan and Lanka absent? I would definitely put them ahead of Fomoria at any rate, though I can understand why Fomoria is there, especially in this game.

Well, any EA list of power nations is pretty arbitary, all of them are pretty powerful. When I was making this game, I just decided to include the 4 nations with most wins in the victorious nations thread (arbitary, I know, but you have to put the line somewhere).

So far, there has been one vote for putting Pebble Skin Suit to con6 with E4B1 cost to replace Blood Stone. I'll give all joining players one vote and if the end result is positive, it's going in.

It probably has gold cost 60, like all other trolls.

The status of the Pebble Skin Suit is 3 yay's and 1 nay. If we want to get mathematical, thats 3-1 = +2. So it looks like it's coming in.

I'm going to be moving this friday to my university. I'll likely be able to get back on in a matter of a day or two but if not I've asked chrispedersen to cover for me. So depending on when we're going to start I should be able to get my pretender in at least, if not I'll have him send it in and play a few turns.

Or, if people feel that this will overcomplicate matters, I can back out of the game now.

Awesome Burnsaber. Absolutely AWESOME!!!

Just read the first post, and I've always wanted to find a way to make players who sign up for games to actually read all the rules and notices before doing so. And now I know how to do it :)

Best of luck with the game everyone. And hope the mod-testing goes smoothly Burnsaber.

Burnsaber

Allrighty. Map and complimation mod done! See the download in the first post.

The "random" starting locations are not exactly equal, but all have at least 3 province difference to nearest capital and 3 or more neighbours.

With fixed visible starts and the lack of chokepoints in the map, people should be wary of early rushes and plan for them.

Alhought we are not starting before sunday, plese upload pretender as soon as possible so that we can actually start on sunday.

Intentional. Even the original map has those provinces "empty", likely for balance reasons. I know it might be sort of confusing, but I didn't want to make the map uglier by trying to scribble over them or something. The map has plenty of water even without them. 27 water provinces on the outer rim leaves each water nation with 9 water provinces, which is pretty good, considering that land nations have 10,8 provinces per player.

Yeah, my attemps to contact fakey have resulted in nothing. According to chris, he should have gotten internet yesterday. Since he seemed quite eager to drop off (suggesting it in two separate accounts), so I have decided to seek a replacement player now while there is still time.

Well, you don't have to sign the pledge if you don't want to. Pledge that was pledged just because it's mandatory has no meaning.

Can you promise to not to instantly turn AI if the tide of war turns against you? Because that's enough for me. By fighting to the end, you learn more of the game and keep the game nice, clean and balanced. If real and stuff cuts in the dom-time, just ask for an extension.

Also, Panganea is available. If you agree to that one term above, just post a confirmation here and upload pretender before saturday and I'll be glad to welcome you into this game.

P.S: "Jenga" isn't supposed to mean anything in this context,it just sounds silly :). It's a game also thought http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenga

Yeah, I usually reserve spots longer than this, but I read between the lines from your posts and came to same conclusion. So, hopefully, no hard feelings?

On other news, I started the game before anything else superdramatic happens. The game seems fine, there even isn't even a single illegal pretender!

I extended the clock 24h for the first turn to accomodate if someone was really counting on the Friday start in their scheducle.

Burnsaber
September 3rd, 2009, 01:19 AM
Oh, and just to avoid any further confusion, I'll give a more accurate definition to the victory conditions, which were defined as thus in the first post during recruitment:

Victory Condition
1)40% of capitals and provinces held for consecutive 2 turns (when someones winning, you have to act immediately!)
2)The surrender of other players

With thirteen players 40% of capitals is 5,2 ~ 5. We have 132 provinces, 40% of which is 52,8 ~ 53. So a player will win if he holds 5 capitols and 53 provinces for 2 consecutive turns. Compared to many other games, this is pretty "easy" to achieve, so people are highly encouraged to keep an eye out for potential winners and take pre-emptive actions well before they can reach the requirements. It's especially dangereous if someone manages to take the 5 capitols, since air-dropping around to take the province requirement really isn't that hard.

Fakeymcfake

[01:14] llamabeast_ I still can't log into the llamaserver
[01:14] llamabeast_ Something like it has happened occasionally before though
[01:14] llamabeast_ From time to time there are files that, when sent, never arrive
[01:14] llamabeast_ I know that sounds like superstition but it's true
[01:14] llamabeast_ Nothing throws an error so I have no idea what causes it
[01:15] llamabeast_ I think you'll either have to let him stale this turn, or restart

Since staling the first turn isn't fun for anyone, I decided to restart since it's just turn 1.

Tried requesting it from llamaserver?

Do you have another e-mail you could use?

(Then of course there's the obvious, like have you checked your spam folder, but i'm going to assume you did that).

The bug is a bit more persistant than that thought. First, I tried to change the e-mail to my secondary adress in to order to get the turn file and send it to Intostructure.

I got the "you are now receiving turns for R'lyeh in the Early Days game" message, but I couldn't get the file, no e-mail arrived, no matter how many times I requested for it. Then Calahan from IrC agreed to help out and I set to e-mail for him. Same thing, Calahan got the confirmation message, but no turn file, not even by requesting. So I set R'lyehs e-mail back to Intostructure and restarted.

I'm just absolutely baffled at what could cause this. Perhaps no .trn file got generated for some reason? Llamabeast "ghost turn" explanation is the best I've seen.

Now that the restart didn't work, we'll just unfortunately have to let R'lyeh stale the first turn and see if he receives the second turn.

Ugh, I don't what it is about this game that apparently makes it an abodomination against llamaserver, but damned be if I'm going let that bring me down.

We'll, we have two options at this point, either we continue with a major power power vacuum in the sea or start the game completely over, having to resend pretenders and stuff.

Le Sigh.
Llama server is now repeatedly sending my pretenders back saying they are middle age R'lyeh pretenders when they need to be early age.

I've checked, thoroughly, to make sure I am indeed sending in an early age pretender. I have the early age Jenga map open right now, with the Jenga mod on, and my one saved R'lyeh pretender loaded right in. I am certain this is a perfectly kosher early age pretender.

I've decided to step out of the game and ask for a sub. Hopefully the trouble is somehow on my end and a different person playing R'lyeh will enable the game to continue. I'm sure a lot of you guys are probably wondering if I'm attempting some sort of hacks or shenanigans which have lead to this, and I don't want to be in this position any more.

Burnsaber
September 7th, 2009, 11:53 PM
OH MY GOD!

:doh::doh::doh:

I now know what the bug is. It was because of the Jenga mod where I moved MA R'lyeh into early age to give it coastal recruits. That's why llamaserver is throwing fits, because it thinks that you are basically sending MA prentenders into early era game. I don't know why it accepted R'lyehs pretender in the first game, but it was likely the cause of error.

I'll just make the game "multi-age" game, so that the game accepts pretenders from all eras. That should fix it. Just be certain that you have the Jenga mod enabled when making pretenders.

So yeah, my bad. Please feel free to verbally mock me if you feel like it, I deserve it for not figuring this out sooner.

I was just about to upload the fixed version of the Jenga mod when my internet connection decided to fail :banghead, but it will be back up later today. I'm posting this from school.

Just give me 12 hours and I will fix this game for good. Everyone just lay back and breathe until I mangae to upload the new Jenga mod. Patience is a virtue, you know.

Burnsaber
September 8th, 2009, 10:14 AM
Ok, here is my assestment of the situation:

1) The bug is squished. I tested my the new preferences out and managed to send a pretender for R'lyeh with 0 problems.

2) Unfortunately everyone needs to re-download the Jenga mod (can be found in the first of the game thread, titled Jenga_Mod_fixed, containing a Jenga2.dm file). When you put the file in the mods folder, feel free to delete the old "Jenga" .dm file to stop it from cluttering your mod preferences screen.

3) The changes in the mod shouldn't affect any one else but R'lyeh, but I've decided to play it safe and I'm asking everyone to remake their pretender and making sure that they have the new Jenga mod and the single age mod enabled. Since you guys probably remember your desings, this will only take a minute.

4) Send in the new pretender and once everyone has sent it, we start the game and have fun bashing heads.

5) Even if the player for R'leyh is final in his decision to step down, it won't matter, for I shall take control of R'lyeh. So if you follow the steps above, the game will get rolling.

6) Thanks for your patience.

I had the same problem a while back. The best solution I've seen is just to re-install the game into a folder not under /program files. The problem seems to be the absolutely outrageous security settings in Vista, which prevent any applications from creating a file under /program files.

So, I just reinstalled the game to C:/ and it worked perfectly.

The Mind Lords find your message lacking as much in logic as in capital letters. How could your kind not know the difference between mammals and fish, not even with all of the first hand experience from living in the ocean? And your kind would attemp to eat a cursed titaness with a hybrid form, without any kind of natural resistance to poison? We Mind Lords are perplexed on how your kind could have survived without anykind of knowledge on how to breed or eat safely. All other species we have encountered seem to at least have an basic grasp on those two things, no matter how lowly creatures they may be.

Truly, this only assures us of why you people need to be lobotomized and enslaved. The difference in brain activity will be neglible and you'd be a great deal more useful for the world as whole. If you surrender now, we'll make the procedure as painless as possible.

We admit that the strenght of your heretical blessings took us by suprise, but know that your victory is shallow and meaningless, for she'll be back. With vengeance. We invite you to invade us. Gaze upon the armies of R'lyeh and see your future as mindless automatons.

That sounds like a R'yleh map icon issue to me. Have you checked to see if you have the "standards and streamers" and/or "llamabanners" mods installed on your laptop? Or indeed all the mods for this specific game that could have changed the default R'yleh icon?

If all else fails, then perhaps just copy the entire contents of your Dominions folder at work onto your laptop. Dominions is not a harddrive hungry game, so it should easily fit onto a 1GB USB stick.

What's a scale bug btw.?

Lingchih
September 28th, 2009, 11:49 PM
The scale bug is rather rare. When it happens, usually in your cap, your scales are not accurately reflected in the prov. For instance, in this game, where I am Nief with cold 3, I have no cold in my cap, though my dom there is very high. In fact, I have not had any cold there all game, even though all my other provs with Dom have cold now, ranging from 1-2.

The bug can affect any scale, not just temp.

Dagnabbit, 2500 gold worth of experienced Jarls sent to Valhalla, and all I got was one pretender god's eyeball. Not a good trade, methinks. But, at least, 14 mages patrolling is 14 mages that are not researching or site searching.

Those guys are just too brave. I think I need to lower their morale rather than boost it. They need to know when it's time to run.

Pretty disgusting how useless those mages are for killing niefel jarls, though. This has been a pretty awful war for both sides. If only I had a decent water income.

Possible bug i think.

the troll ambassador: besides being really annoyingly having only misc slots despite his humanoid appearence, he has no magic, yet when you choose his actions you can click "forge magic item" or "cast ritual spell" but of course there are no options, just the screen. he can also be told to "cast" maybe its just a copystats quirk, but i thought i'd report it.

Edit: also, i guess the only applicable use he has that he shouldn't is that he can alchemy without magic.

oh and he can't research

Edit again: after having a little modding explained to me, i'm guessing the magic path thing is to allow him to lead troops underwater but he's not supposed to be a mage, but he can be empowered straight to level 2 water for 30 gems. (would this only give him W1?)

Intentional to prevent using her as a Thug chassis (She needs to be tough however, since assasinating her will bring death to all troops following her). Hopefully I remembered to explain the "in-game" reason for her lack of slots in the description?
(I'm 100% sure if I remembered to do that in my last update)

Yeah, there isn't much I can do about that. She's copystatting Lord of the Seas for the "bring troops UW- ability", which gives her his magic too.

Yeah, empowering her will just give W1. She's currently W1 base, but also has -1 water magic (the same way like land capricorns get magic penalties).

Damn daylight savings, or rather lack of that. I intended to take my turn this morning while eating breakfast, but forgot that I am currently at GMT+2 rather than GMT+3 like still a bit over a week ago. Which resulted in my first ever stale in a Dom3 game :(

To make matters worse, Lanka had an excellent turn, which saw my Marverni totally overrun; I wouldn't have been able to do much to reverse that even if I had been able to take my turn. Now I don't have enough gold to pay my forces, and my forts are under siege. My preteder is still (barely) alive, but has so far taken quite a few hits from remote spells. While my druids cause massive havoc with reverse communion, they really are no use without troops to protect them. I really do not see how I could possibly make a come-back from this, even if Lanka was attacked by all her other neighbours.

To preserve my sanity, I think I will go AI :( Cheers for Lanka for a well executed attack! Thanks Burnsaber to setting up this game, I am sure interested in joing a similar game in the future too :)

I have forts yes, but almsot all are besieged. I have mages true, but no troops to protect them (and you know Marverni druids need a meat shield as they are ultra-fragile) as the troops will desert now (no money to pay for upkeep). I have a live pretender, true who has has been hit by quite a few seeking arrows (and while he has recuperation and will eventually get rid of his afflictions, he is of absolutely no use now).

I am sorry, but the Marverni situation is totally hopeless as far as I can see.

Taking a look at the score graphs, you do still have quite a few troops left. And, to my understanding, troops don't desert that quickly from lack of gold. Is there any way we could convince you to stay on for just one more turn, just to see how badly desertion will really hurt you? With that many troops remaining it would at least be worth searching for a sub to play out your final days, I think.

November 2nd, 2009, 01:13 PM

Jarkko
November 2nd, 2009, 02:47 PM
Very well, I'll stick around to the end then. Not that it makes any difference, the charts sadly do not reflect the truth here (like say, my druids being in an army, while the militia from two events are far far away, or the fact that most of my army is actually mercs, who will wave goodbye now (if you check that, you notice they all leave after this turn)) :(

I don't mean to force you to play, it just seems from the sidelines that there's still a play or two for you to make. Maybe there really isn't, and you're about to really get trashed next turn or so. I think that this might be a moot issue next turn, although his last fort is outside of my jurisdiction. His two remaining forts have been under siege since before he staled. I would guess that he had left orders with his mages and just forgot to submit turns. Barring some kind of screwup on my or another nation's part he wasn't going to break the siege.
