It says I have a CD key violation. How do I fix this?

Buy the game?
Seriously though, try uninstalling and then reinstalling with the cd key you got with your legal copy of the game. If that doesn't work, I think you need to contact Shrapnel Support.

You may have more than one person in the same game playing with the same CD key, e.g. if some other member of your family is playing in the same game as you. Unfortunately you can't do that - you need one CD key per player.

Did this happen during a MP game?
If so did you give your CD-key to another player in that game? or did you submit turns for two or more nations in that game?
If you have a valid and secure CD-key, then as Sombre says, Shrapnel Customer Support is the path to follow if you are still having problems.
Edit: I see llama got some ninja training up in Scotland then.

That's not so great! I wanted to give a friend of me an introduction into Dominions 3 in two weeks in a LAN session. However, this won't work if two installations don't work with the same key in LAN.
So it's back to Civ4 FFH2 I guess...

You could do it with two copies of the demo version.

Yes, provided there's no movement restriction, that might work.

Dominions is a game well suited for hotseat play as well.

Eh, I don't know. I've tried that. The problem with playing dominions hotseat, is once you start having 30+ minute turns it can really drag down the pace of the game, and unless both people have something easy to jump in and do while waiting for the other person's turn, it can be a somewhat frustrating experience. Maybe other people can deal with it better, but my hotseat partner was always ragging on me for playing too slow.

the trick is to have 2 games going at once on different computers. or have Dom on one computer and like Heros of Might and Magic on the other, or some such arraingment

Good idea, actually.

Although it's nice that Dom3 supports hotseat mode, it wouldn't be an option for our LAN sessions. I have two computers and we'd rather play another game than playing any game which makes trouble.
Especially since I still have to convince my friend that Dom3 is a good game. He tried the demo once himself after I told him about the game, but he had trouble to understand the game and since he isn't as stubborn as me if it comes to digging into a game, he lost interest. Therefore I better don't come up with restrictions like hotseat mode.
It would be great if Dom3 would support a spawn installation like starcraft did. Ahhh, those were the times when players were still treated nicely by the game companies... Almost unthinkable today, in times when games like C&C 4 wants to force a permanent internet connections even for single player.
I'm just waiting for the time I'm buying a board game like settlers of catan and get a note in the manual that I have to buy the game X times if I want to play with X players.

I sympathise, I really do. Just unfortunate that dom3 doesn't have the option. It's to try and reduce piracy/sharing I suppose.

Ideally the game should have included a game timer... as seen within Heroes_3 and AgeofWonders:ShadowMagic. I play hotseat with relatives and basically it takes 2 days before one turn passes.... still good fun!

We actually setup at least 3 computers with different TBS games and sometimes as many as 5 computers.
