View Full Version : Warcry - new semi-rand game :)
Zeldor
October 28th, 2009, 01:52 PM
Here comes a game that I promised for some time. Rules are a combination of RAND ones and normal multiplayer games, so:
- nations are random [but you can name 3 you don't want to roll]
- players are known and you know who plays who
- diplomacy is allowed
- no trading is allowed [or donations]
Other settings:
Era: MA
Map: Dawn of Dominions [adapted for MA, details lower]
Settings: standard for MA, magic sites 50, HoF 15, Renaming ON
Mods: CBM 1.6, Zlefin's F&W thugs [http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=43378]
Victory conditions: 6/12 VPs
Players: 12
Players:
01 Caelum - Zeldor
02 Atlantis - FrozenLlama
03 Agartha - Pashadawg
04 Arco - Baalz
05 Vanheim - Ferrosol [Omnirizon as a sub now]
06 Ermor - Quitti
07 Jotunheim - Lolomo
08 CTis - Burnsaber
09 Eriu - Micah
10 Bandar Log - QM [Trumanator as a sub now]
11 Pangaea - Lingchih
12 Pythium - Graeme Dice
Other important reminder:
- no cheating [if you are not sure it's cheating, ask]
- no Sickle farming
- patrolling with immobile commanders allowed [minor bug]

Ok, just waiting on 4 players, I guess that it should be easily to fill, probably till Sunday, especially with few people PMing with interest in that game.
So please, take a look at the map and see if you have any suggestions. Especially for Agartha, Caelum and Eriu. I was thinking about switching Pan for Machaka, but I don't think they'd be able to survive long enough.
I will also need names of provs that need changing, at least in Pan neighbourhood. Eriu's too.

Ok, it looks like there will be just 1 spot for volunteers, unless someone from invite list decides to play after all tomorrow. Will let you all know tomorrow evening.

What's sickle farming? If it's using the sickle artifact to get death gems, I think it would be pretty hard to determine what is "farming" and what is "normal" usage. Can we just mod it out?
Graeme Dice
October 31st, 2009, 11:00 PM
Sickle farming would be using the sickle with remote attack spells to harvest 30 death gems a turn. Either get somebody to attack one of your provinces with remote attack spells, or cast ghost riders on your own province.
LoloMo
October 31st, 2009, 11:45 PM
Oh! Crafty! Ok, I'm good with disallowing that.
Zeldor
November 1st, 2009, 04:27 AM
Well, not certainly remotes, but just Sickle + ally suiciding troops against it.
quantum_mechani
November 1st, 2009, 06:27 AM
or cast ghost riders on your own province.Actually, ghost riders doesn't work since they are lifeless.
Calahan
November 1st, 2009, 07:53 AM
Actually, ghost riders doesn't work since they are lifeless.
Just because I'm a bit anal about these things sometimes, it's actually the Mindless tag that is the key when it comes to getting gems from the Sickle. Since killing a Lich for example (which is Lifeless), will net you a gem.
After having the Sickle in three games over the summer, I found no way of self abusing it. As all the remote attack spells you can cast with the 'independents' tag (thereby generating a battle) bring no returns gem wise. It definitely takes two to tango for Sickle farming. (hence why I'm guessing it's on the banned exploit list)
Or of course just take Misfortune 3 (or cast Baleful Star on yourself) and wait for the Barbs/Knights to turn up :) (or, now it's mentioned, is attacking barbarians with the Sickle an exploit as well?)
Graeme Dice

Didn't realize that. I never managed to quite get to the point that I could try it out except in one game that crashed just before I managed to reach Con 9.

November 1st, 2009, 05:03 PM
Ok, game is oficially full. PM me or post here that 3 nations you'd prefer not to get. Ironhawk will roll nations then.
I will work on the map tomorrow, should have most of stuff on it done. Still waiting on suggestions about balance fixes. And some prov names would be cool too.

November 3rd, 2009, 10:02 AM
I would like to request removing pyre vines from the mod. I have a number of problems with them:
1. On thematic grounds I dislike map move 2 'plants'.
2. They have such a bizarre heap of abilities, it looks weird and messy and it's hard to judge balance.
3. The graphics look a bit ugly.
4. They are not thugs or SCs.
Zeldor
November 3rd, 2009, 10:33 AM
Ok, MA Scenario map is ready, let me know if there are any problems with it.
QM suggests that no compensation is given to weaker nations, any other comments on that?
Lingchih
November 3rd, 2009, 09:32 PM
I am also fine with no compensation for the weak positions. Mainly because I'm not sure what to suggest you give them.

I am also fine with no compensation for the weak positions. Mainly because I'm not sure what to suggest you give them.
Same here.Have only tested the map with MA Arco but one thing that did come up was that one of the provinces next door to their start has a guaranteed navigator recruitment. Is it really wise to give them access to A given that they can communion up pretty damn well without it?
Zeldor
November 4th, 2009, 08:27 AM
Wasn't it C'tis getting them? Hmm... There is also a connection N of Bandar cap that should not exist, I will remove it.
Anyway, I need 3 nation statements to get nations rolled. I need them from Baalz, Pashadawg and Zlefin.
zlefin
November 4th, 2009, 09:34 AM
due to my illness, i'm going to have to pass on this game.
I do look forward to hearing how FW thugs do, as this will be the first real game balance test of it. I know they're a little weak, that's by design; i meant them to be significantly weaker than death summons of the same cost. As to the vines, they were put in as compensation for the loss of fever fetishes (which was part of Zeldor's original request). I didn't put anything at the clam replacement since naiads already occupy that slot. And i didn't do any other path things since that was outside the original goal of the mod.
Zlefin
PS don't forget my lances and weapons mod zeldor! sometime i wanna see that get into a game too, but I may not be up to harassing you about it for awhile.
Zeldor
November 4th, 2009, 10:04 AM
I really hoped that you, as mod creator, would play. Are you sure? If yes, then FrozenLama was next on backup list.
P.S. I can test lances and weapons mod in next game, assuming you play in it, otherwise I won't use any of your mods :P

Do we know what nation we're going to be playing yet? I'd like to start testing things.
Zeldor
November 4th, 2009, 02:01 PM
Pasha said he will give his nations in the evening. So it leaves only Baalz to say his nation [FrozenLama sent me his picks when he volunteered to join]. I hope to have nations rolled tomorrow and game started at Saturday or Sunday.

Wasn't it C'tis getting them? Hmm... There is also a connection N of Bandar cap that should not exist, I will remove it.
Are you speaking of that connection into what used to be Helheim? It's always been there... I think it is meant to be. It gives that nation a bit more expansion room, and a back door around the mountains for either side.
Zeldor
November 5th, 2009, 12:25 PM
Lingchih:
I meant 137-141 connection, not Helheim cap. It's not in RAND version of the map, so I assume it's a bug that was fixed by Pasha there.
BTW, everyone got their picks, so I PMed them to Ironhawk. I will inform you when nations are rolled. I should create the game on llamaserver today too.
Ironhawk
November 5th, 2009, 06:21 PM
Ok, your nation picks are below. I obeyed everyones dislikes as they were described to me. Let me know if there are any problems:
01 Caelum - Zeldor
02 Atlantis - FrozenLlama
03 Agartha - Pashadawg
04 Arco - Baalz
05 Vanheim - Ferrosol
06 Ermor - Quitti
07 Jotunheim - Lolomo
08 CTis - Burnsaber
09 Eriu - Micah
10 Bandar Log - QM
11 Pangaea - Lingchih
12 Pythium - Graeme Dice

Yes. I think there was an error I discovered way back when when first hosting a game on the map. I forgot all about it. :)
Zeldor
November 6th, 2009, 07:03 PM
Ok, game is up on llamaserver. I don't have time to fix the F/W mod, I will do that before game starts and adjust game settings. You can upload pretenders meanwhile, you should need only CBM for pretender creation [at least making it with old F/W mod version won't cause any problems]. I hope I can get the game started on Monday.

November 15th, 2009, 11:33 AM
Lingchich was writing about some internet problems and his turn is still not in 1h before hosting, so I added 6h to the timer. Will add more if he does not appear.
Anyway, please submit your turns on time [Baalz, qm! :)]

Ah thanks, I was out this weekend and planned on just taking a stale rather than holding up the game so early on, but got my turn in now.
Zeldor
November 15th, 2009, 08:18 PM
I don't like staling people. But I also won't let the hosting get too relaxed [and I simply cannot always be near hosting time], so don't try to abuse it :)
Lingchih
November 20th, 2009, 07:21 PM

Thanks for the delay Zeldor. But with no resolution in sight, and me in such a precarious position, I think I will have to request a rollback. I cannot stale at this point.
Thanks
Zeldor
November 21st, 2009, 05:23 AM
I know. I have no time till evening to deal with it. Maybe someone can suggest a solution? I've heard it happen few times. If not, I will do the rollback in the evening.
Quitti
November 21st, 2009, 10:07 AM
Rollback or stale is the common consensus of dealing with it. I'd say rollback since it's so early in the game, with no one dealing in new turns to see if it corrupts the file again or not. (As in rollback+force hosting, since Llamaserver should have the turn files ready anyway).
Zeldor
November 21st, 2009, 01:58 PM
Ok, I rolled back the game. Will force host once it does the thing.
Ling: get on irc! :)
Zeldor
November 21st, 2009, 02:21 PM
Ok, it looks like llamaserver did not like the rollback and commited suicide...
Next turn due: 00:00 GMT on Thursday January 1st
Frozen Lama
November 21st, 2009, 04:18 PM

Yeah, I cotnacted llamabeast, we have to wait, I don't think I can do anything.

Zeldor
November 22nd, 2009, 11:35 AM
Game seems to be lost in time and space - it no longer appears on llamaserver. I hope llamabeast appears soon to fix it.
Lingchih
November 22nd, 2009, 05:36 PM
I'm getting a bit confused (as I think the llamaserver is as well). I got a turn 11, which I did and sent in, then I got a rollback to turn 10, which I have not touched yet, since the game still appears to be lost in time and space (it's not showing on the llamaserver status page).
The llamaserver appears to be acting up elsewhere as well (Overlords).
Zeldor
November 22nd, 2009, 05:38 PM
It hosted non-existent turn10, which was not supposed to happen [especially with timer like that], so I rolled back to turn10, just to see that it contains turn9. So I went for the remaining solution - tried to roll back to turn9 so I can force host to generate proper turn 10. And then game vanished [when using rollback to turn9].
Micah
November 22nd, 2009, 07:54 PM
I think the global stale to turn 11 was the best option to clear out Ling's bad .trn file instead of a rehost, especially given that it was actually working. =)

Like I'm a prophet! Now it looks like awesome solution indeed.

If and when you get the game working you are going to have to find a sub for me. My computer died on Sunday evening and I have been unable to get it working since. No idea when I will get it fixed but it will probably be a week or two at least.

December 1st, 2009, 08:26 PM
Okay, I believe I have fixed the game (confirmation would be helpful as of course there may be issues I am not aware of). All I did was restore the last files I had for turn 9 and rehost. There were some irregularities in how the server had archived the files though, so it does indeed seem to have got its knickers in a twist.
A thousand apologies for taking so long, and, worse, being so uncommunicative. The straightforward reason is that I no longer sit at my computer much, apart from at work, where they have blocked ssh access so I can't do anything. My life is quite different now that I have a job rather than being a student, and I've even deliberately taken measures to reduce my tendency to use the computer, i.e. putting it in the lounge. I now need to swing back the other way a bit and actually answer my e-mails and so forth. In fact it only took five minutes to fix so I will try to take that as a lesson and be less procrastinaty in future. It is important to me that the LlamaServer is considered a reliable server, so I will aim to get back on the ball with it. Sorry to Zeldor in particular, who has really done his best.

Well, had I not lost all 17 communicants in my previous turn when the AI decided, to spam nothing but word of power on Atlantis' Dagon instead of throwing in the occasional mind burn, then I might have been able to fight off Ermor this turn. Not that it was a bad choice, but it made me regret researching evocation to deal with Ermorian undead hordes instead of thaumaturgy to deal with SCs. Oh well, Ermor is clearly playing well, so I'd watch out for him.

This turn I think the lesson was what not to do. That would have been a lot nicer if I hadn't forgot to stick my communion scripting back on that gaggle of mystics, you were supposed to be getting blade winds and falling fires with some earth elemental blockers, instead of far strikes intended for empoisoners. Ah well, I didn't really expect you to attack into that communion so it slipped my mind. And those howls saved your butt to, an extra earth elemental with my pretender probably would have tipped the scales. Well played. :)

Those Sirrush having regen and reinvig would probably have made the difference in chewing through that last wave of longdead. Ah well, profitable turn nonetheless. Well, since I'm not going to be able to climb back to the game, I might just as well write my "good-bye" post right now (I'll likely play to the bitter end thought, just to keep that nice C'tis dominion up as long as possible ;)).
I decided to go for a slightly different C'tis strat this time and spend a lot of time recruiting poison slingers and summoning animals (since summon animals gives only 100% PR troops when used in swamp terrain, they make for a good meatwall for the slingers). I really didn't have to use this trick against Bandar Log (seriously, if you start near Bandar, you attack him, it's such a no-brainer-play). I managed to kill his SC pretender with a somewhat lucky blow and Eagly Eye'd shamans with Ethereal xbows were enough to decimate his elephants.
Unfortunately Arco attacked just as I was busy mopping up the remains of BL. Since most of my troops were busy, Arco really managed to creep deep into my territory. And just when I thought that I'd started to beat him back, there come another wave of teleporting pd raiders. Sirrushes and their 100% PR was also very nasty suprise, especially when taking into account my earlier strat choice.
I spent a lot of time and gems forging Bows of Botulf and more ethereal xbows (c-c-combo!), which would have allowed me to wield my shmans both as communion slaves and Sirrush killing sniper machines. But of course, then Perpetual Storm came up, making all that effort practically void. *sigh*. Facing no other options but defeat I decided to make Arco pay dearly for my lands and IMHO I managed to suprise Baalz couple of times (although it was mostly me who was taking the beatings).

Yeah, the "feature" is a quite nasty bug really, but I knew about it. I've faced thousands of undead before. Just not much I can do about it.
And that battle was so nasty on the processor, I had to abandon my PC (which I usually play on), and go watch it on my Macbook Pro. The PC just choked after a few rounds and wouldn't playback anymore.
And there will be mages in the battles to come. I was getting some important last minute research done, and decided to just sacrifice that castle. I had hoped to do a bit more damage though.

I'm not sure if the Solarions are overpowered. I equipped them not to die by being immune to everything and to have regeneration, at the expense of damage output. They were also backed by an army of mages casting buffs. I'm actually disappointed they killed so few.

Jotunheim, it was about time for you to come and put me out of my misery. It just took you, what, 30 turns?
Anyways, this has been a odd game. I was practically dead in turn 40 already, but Baalz just couldn't get a decent siege on my capital. I'm not sure why, perhaps he got Atlantis on his back at that point? So I just mulled around and sometimes sent raider squads to annoy people. I really loved how I was able to take 4 provinces with 12-15 city guards. No one was intrested enough on our front to even just slightly boost PD to prevent that "raiding squad" from rampaging across the realm :D.
Also, I'm now pretty convinced that MA C'tis dominion is really not much fun. It's not OP by any means, but I really did not feel comfortable with the advantage it presented when I holed up in my cap and it likely wasn't much fun to fight against it. Not sure what the fix could be, since the dominion effect is not moddable.

Good job fending off Arcos! I saw that you couldn't take down the Arcos giraffe, but neither could they take down your walls. Plus he needs to shuttle around priestesses to heal afflictions on his commanders!
Baalz was building up a huge force of vinemen a province away from your capital. I had to waste a lot of troops with guerilla fights against him, because I don't want the lizards to go down. Their miasma was the only thing protecting my eastern flank. So every turn, I budgeted a portion of my resources to ensure that Arcos couldn't take down C'tis.
But then after Arcos went AI, I found that I couldn't commit enough resources to take down C'tis, because everything went to fighting Eriu.
But now Jotuns are finally able to move against the massive Ermorian threat!

Well, the score graphs show you topped out with over 32,000 troops. Yeah, you've got 10-12 thousand on me (minus a few from that last storming), but I assume you must have a lot more in reserve.
But yeah, Ermor can probably not win. You move too slowly, and seem reluctant to take the battle to the caps you need to gain a win. Jotun is in a good position to win, needing only one more VP. But actually, I'll put my money on Atlantis. He's got the forge, and no enemies.
Sieging my cap would possibly get you another VP, but would be quite costly, and would even perhaps fail, since I have mages of all disciplines in there, along with the maenad hordes I have previously faced you with. Even if you take my cap, I also own the former Caelum cap. It will take you years to march up and siege that VP. The game will surely be over by then, won by whoever.
Sorry, I don't mean to be a spoiler. I'm just stating what I see for the game. I never thought I would win as Pan, I just wanted to hang in there until the end, which it looks like I will do.

And, off topic... Is Ermor totally broken? The expanding battlefield seems to me so.

I doubt it too, at least with just skeletons and thaumaturgs. And that is the reason why I'm reluctant to move onwards fast. You are correct on that I'm not in the best position to win at the moment, but as jotun decided to cancel our nap, maybe I can wreak some havoc...
And freespawn certainly does have it's problems, if battlefield wide spells could actually affect the whole battlefield, it wouldn't be broken.

I would say Atlantis is the winner unless we all kiss and make up and invade Atlantis :) He has the forge for too long already. I bet he has all sorts of teleporting nasties by now. The closest Atlantis victory point to any army we have of significant size is the underwater Atlantis capital, and there's no way we can take that. So I guess we'll all just have to wait for Atlantis to finish forging stuff for his 200 Frog SCs and come take our victory points.
Quitti
April 22nd, 2010, 06:48 AM
Or then you could divert your forces to him instead of me, oh poor little Ermor. The forge has been on for quite a while and we can't really do much about it.
Anyway, isn't army size counted from unit sizes and not unit amount? Skeletons are size2 and skel cavalry are size 3, so 30k army size equals to about 13k-14k units or so. The biggest stack of mine had 10113 undead and 284 normal troops last turn when jotun peeked at it before the storm on that fort.
Also, this picture (http://tinyurl.com/steelcock) is the army in question, just having won the fight with a few hundred skeletons lost.

Oh don't worry, commanders won't actually require feeding, even though they do eat.
Anyway, got tired of looking them hanging around, so I thought I'd make some use out of them. Too bad they didn't do much, killed just one dryad and a sleeper or something like that. I originally made them to counter pythium if he should step out of his cap with his mages, so they've been around for a while. But you charmed 8 of them by my count, which isn't even 1/3rd :). I guess I'll have to refrain from doing stuff out of boredom before the game's outcome is not set yet...

Yeah, I agree it's broken. Something should be done to it. I wasn't aware of it before actually engaging you in the fight with those 10k undead though, might've otherwise limited the stack size a bit or split it up into multiple armies which still wouldn't have been easy pickings (like the one 1k army rampaging around and taking C'tis cap for example).
