View Full Version : Cripple Fight 2: The Lamepire Strikes Back!
Burnsaber
November 6th, 2009, 12:10 PM
This game will only feature nations that have not yet won a single MP game, according to the thread on victorious nations (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=33275). This is your chance to play your favourite weak nation without some stupid niefels bounding you into dust in turn 14. Although note that there are some nations that are consider pretty good in the mix. Well, there must be some reason for them not having won a single game.
Name of the Game - CrippleFight2
Type - llamaserver PBEM (Play By EMail)
Map: Threelake (http://dom3maps.wikidot.com/system:threelake) 92 land + 12 sea (about 13,1 provs per land player and 12 per water nation (although the sea provinces are somewhat disconnected)
Mods: CBM 1.6, Multi-age mod (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showp...0&postcount=41)
Players: 8
Settings: renaming on, magic sites 40, otherwise normal
Hosting Schedule:
24h per turn until turn 20,
then 36h to 40,
then 48h to 60
and finally 60h after turn 60
Delays:
-Each player will be granted a delay on request. If there are longer delays (especially in the first 20-30 turns), please try to find a sub. But if push comes to shove, delays are highly preferred over setting someone AI. If someone has trouble keeping up on the schedule, just speak up and we can negotiate on a better hosting schedule.
Victory Condition
- The surrender of all other losers.
NEWS AND IMPORTANT NOTES
The game is up on the llamaserver (http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=CrippleFight2)
Althought I'm (sort of) admining this game, I don't have the time to play in it. So Valerius will be working as a "in-game" admin.
This is to avoid the levels of drama as seen in the "Setsumi" game.
Nations and players in the game:
EA Ermor -- Squirreloid
EA Abysia -- Trumanator
EA Tir'na'Og -- Valerius (CF1 veteran) ADMIN
EA Atlantis -- Ghoul31
MA Bandar Log - Frozen Lama (CF1 veteran)
MA Eriu -- Starshine_Monarch
LA Arcosephale -- tgbob (CF1 veteran)
LA Atlantis -- Alpine Joe (CF1 veteran)

Looks like the cripples are popular; the game filled up in under 8 hours.
I've never played on Threelake before; it's a nice map. Will we be playing with the special commanders in some provinces? I noticed when downloading the map there was a modified .map file so if someone starts in the province with a wraithlord they don't get it as a free commander.
Also, are you going to have HoF 15 like in CF1?

Yeah, it seems that I'll have to incorporate the "draw" nations to the next game. If not for anything else, just to keep the game over 6 players.

Since I'm not playing, I could give all nations fixed starting positions and make sure that no one starts over the special provinces and get free commanders. Also, improved balance!

Going to 8 players from 13 is a big jump. 15 HoF would (IMHO) be a bit too much for 10 players.
Anyways, I'll dwiddle with the map and upload the game today.

Okay, game is up on the llamaserver. The map is attached to the first post. All in all, I think that I managed to create pretty balanced starts. All nations have at least 3 province space between capitals and the terrain is okay.
Of course some starts are somewhat better than others, but that's just dom3 reality for you.

It doesn't look like an error. I found the thread from the Sol game. But at this point, unless Burnsaber decides differently, I guess we go ahead since we have 8 people signed up and the map is already setup.

You can add in the llama banners mod by appending it to the bottom of a mod we're using (eg, CBM 1.6). Since its only a cosmetic change, it only affects you, and should work fine. But you have to append it to a mod being used so the game actually does it (since its going to look to add only the mods the server tells it are part of the game).
Someone with more skill in modding can probably give you better instructions.

Any chance I could get a 24 hour delay on the turn? My monitor has once again decided it doesn't like turning on. I hate to delay a game this early, but I've already eaten one stale because of this and two in a row would be a big blow.
If not, I will just suck it up and move on.

Frozen Lama
November 15th, 2009, 09:50 PM
Wow, bad luck on Trumanator's part. he gave 24h notice on all his games and 1 of them staled him, 36h after he posted, and this one looks like he will again. unless it gets delayed within the next 40 minutes, i think we should roll back and let him slip his .2h file in. there is a slight chance he will get it in in time anyways, but not that likely.
Frozen Lama
November 15th, 2009, 11:04 PM
well now that he's staled, whenever one of the admins gets online, will we be rolling back?

Urgh, I hate to ask for a rollback, but I DID give notice on all my games, and PMed as well. If its going to piss everyone off I'll just see if I can roll with it though. I haven't looked at my turn yet, so if we're going to roll back I won't bother.
Valerius
November 16th, 2009, 01:57 AM
Trumanator, I'm very sorry about that. Burnsaber has been covering for me this weekend since I haven't been available. It looks like we needed more time than the 48 hours hosting was delayed.
I don't like rollbacks but I think we should in this case. As far as I know, nobody is at war yet so I don't think we have to worry about that aspect of a rollback. I'd like to get opinions on this, though. Are there any objections to a rollback?

Ok, the game has been rolled back so that Trumanator (Abysia) can submit a turn. Only he should send a turn file. Once he does I will force host the game. When the turn re-hosts please be sure to delete your old 2h files. Thanks.
Valerius
November 16th, 2009, 05:20 PM
The game has now re-hosted. Please be sure to use the latest turn 9 you received, not the original one.
Valerius
November 17th, 2009, 02:27 PM
Wow, three cheaters on one turn.
The other strange thing is that a commander disappeared from my capitol. Maybe this was caused by me not following my own advice and deleting the old 2h file before submitting last turn? OTOH I'm fairly certain I never downloaded the first, pre-rollback, turn 9. Did anyone have a Bean Sidhe show up on their doorstep? :)
Zeldor
November 17th, 2009, 02:32 PM
It's enough if one person cheats and submits old .2h file. I'd ask llambeast to check the situation, find the person behind it and ban him from MP completely, if it's what happened here.
Explanation is simple - someone uses old .2h file and game sees it as valid [game name is fine, turn is fine, nation is fine], but every rollbacks makes some changes in IDs, and it's how things are stored. And there are some weird things that happen if you submit .2h file with IDs different than those you should have. It's usually commanders becoming troops and other way around, magic paths suddenly appearing, you getting commanders in weird places [or scouts becoming commanders and attacking], I have even seen 4 air queens after rollback.
Valerius
November 17th, 2009, 02:41 PM
It's possible that someone deliberately submitted a 2h file from the first, pre-rollback, turn 9 but I think probably it was accidental. But llama would be able to tell who submitted the wrong 2h file?
From what you are saying we can't just play though it since random commanders appearing is, to say the least, unbalancing. I hate rollbacks even more now.
Zeldor
November 17th, 2009, 02:47 PM
Yeah, that's why rollbacks are avoided whenever possible. I don't think you can submit old file by accident [well, theoretically you can ignore all warnings, info and just forward old email to llamaserver...]. You shouldn't be even able to open new file with old .2h sitting in the folder ["unit2com incosistency" is the error for .2h file with different IDs than .trn file].
Valerius
November 17th, 2009, 03:01 PM
Ok, I just ran a test. I downloaded the first .trn, made changes to create a .2h, then downloaded the second .trn. When I loaded the second .trn I got no error message, it remembered the orders I issued from the first .trn and I had an extra commander in my capitol. Essentially one from the first .trn and another from the second. So it looks like it could have been accidental based on the lack of error message. I guess the only option is to rollback again, make sure everyone deletes everything in their CF2 game folder, downloads turn 9 again and rehost?
Zeldor
November 17th, 2009, 03:07 PM
It's early game, your IDs could have not changed. Or you still owned all IDs, even if they were different units. But in that case saving .2h file after using it with new .trn should not cause any problems [but not 100% sure].
Squirrelloid
November 17th, 2009, 03:14 PM
So wait, are we rolling back again? What's going on?
Starshine_Monarch
November 17th, 2009, 03:33 PM
Lots of wierd stuff happened. Somehow I had an unexplained increase in wealth (or so it says) and one of the Tuatha I had recruited the turn before had decided that he didn't want to be a commander anymore. I guess I got confused and handed in an earlier trn file. I have no idea what to do now. I figure that it's early enough that we can just restart the whole thing if everyone agreed to it.
Valerius
November 17th, 2009, 03:39 PM
It looks like in one or more cases the first turn 9 (pre-rollback) was saved and a 2h file created. Then the new turn 9 replaced the first turn 9 .trn file - but the 2h file that had already been created was not deleted. This resulted in situations like in my test where, when the new turn 9 was loaded, two commanders appeared in the capitol - one from the first turn 9, the other from the second. When the game hosted it appears this may have resulted in other changes like, in my case, a commander disappearing.
So I think we will need to rollback again.
BTW, Zeldor, thanks for your help.
Valerius
November 17th, 2009, 03:47 PM
Ok, I've rolled back again. Here's what I need everyone to do:
1. Delete any files in your CrippleFight2 folder in saved games - 2h or trn - anything in that folder.
2. Now save the trn file that the llamaserver will resend you into the CrippleFight2 folder like you normally would for a new turn.
3. You will now need to complete your turn 9 again from scratch - luckily this is early game so it shouldn't be too much work.
4. Send your completed turn to the llamaserver as normal.
I'd appreciate it if everyone would post here that they have done this so we can avoid another bad turn file. Any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for playing. Eriu does not have any easy path. My experience has been that they are usually one of the first nations attacked (CF1 being another example).
Squirrelloid
November 27th, 2009, 04:02 PM
Eriu's early game is actually reasonably strong, since they have great recruitable thugs. Its the late game in which they really suffer. While TS spam was a reasonable option, by the time you had it I had you vastly outmanned - and evocation was probably a distraction from construction to outfit your thugs. A handful of sidhe lords with vine shields and frostbrands under mistform could have been much scarier than TS.
(With an E8+ bless, or E4 and rainbow armor the sidhe lords are tireless, and thus don't suffer the TS-spam problem of fatiguing out.)
Valerius
November 27th, 2009, 04:16 PM
Yes, I agree about Eriu's thugs (and to a lesser degree the thunderstrike option), the problem is getting to that point. You need to get some research done and get some gems to equip them and until that's done you are really fairly helpless.

The Empire of Ermor is a nation of reknowned craftsmen and merchants, can forge a rather wide variety of items, and is willing to trade with interested partners. Payment is accepted in gems or potentially items, and prices are open to negotiations. Please inquire with your local Ermorian embassy about the particular items you are interested in. (eg, send me a PM or find me in the Dom3 IRC channel).
Longstanding conditions:
-We are always willing to take Death and Astral gems. Other gem types subject to negotiation
-Due to local shortages in the death gem market, items requiring death gems will require payment in death gems. This is not negotiable.
Temporary conditions:
-Ermor currently has a surplus of Air gems, and would gladly trade Air gems for Nature or Earth (or of course Death or Astral). High volume trades welcome. (Many air forgings also possible)

The honorable monkeys wish to explain the reasoning for the war:
1) Monkey's hate seafood, even seafood that's been forced out of the water.
2) said seafood kept calling the nation of Bandar Log Patala
3) Cripple Fight 2 had a five hour host going, or at least really fast, and now, the seafood nation has caused the hosting to be very slow.
for these reasons, the last of the seafood must be purged from the CrippleFight universe

Perhaps the seafood nation needs to ask for delays or a new owner be found.

Well, the seafood nation would love to continue fighting the good fight, but alas, the head angakok is out of commission at the moment...
I dropped and broke my computer moving out of college, so I am in the process of scrambling to fix it. Until then, is it possible I could get a 24-hour extension? If you guys dont want to slow the game down, maybe burn could sub in a few turns?
I really want to finish out the game, even though I probably don't have long for this world. Defensive wars are my favorite kind!
Anyways, let me know what you guys think

Alpine, I postponed hosting for 24 hours. If it seems like you'll be without a computer for a longer period than how about we take up Burnsaber on his sub offer until you can return?
Alpine Joe
December 13th, 2009, 07:18 PM
Alright it doesn't look like my computer will be up and running by the next hosting, so if burnsaber is still willing to take over, it would be great to have him sub in. once I get everything in order, I'll see if he still wants to keep playing, and if he does he can have the position permanently.
Thanks for everyone's patience, but this is a position where having a tough fighter to the end will be important. Atlantis has already bled its fair share of invaders, but the fish people still have a lot of fight left!

Ok, thanks for the update. Hosting postponed again to give Burnsaber time to look over the position and submit a turn.

Ok, the holiday season is upon us and hence I've been thinking. I was thinking of temporarily moving to a very lenient hosting (like 72h) for the holiday week (20th-27th day). Quickhost will still be on, in case people want to keep the game moving.
Unless I hear any big objections, I'll set the new hosting to take place sunday.

I will be gone this weekend. My current turn (39?) is in. Please extend the hosting for turn 40 to sometime late monday (US Central Time) if it is set to host earlier than that. Thank you.

Shouldn't be a problem given Burnsaber's planned holiday hosting schedule but I'll make sure turn 40 doesn't host without your turn.

Sure. I changed the hosting interval to 120 hours. If we need an additional postponement I'll do so.
BTW, according to Burnsaber's game description we are due for another change in hosting interval, so once we return to normal hosting next week we will be on 48 hours, not 36.

I may not be able to check the server closer to the scheduled hosting time and we still have one turn outstanding so I'm postponing hosting by a few hours as I mentioned above.

It appears that the old men of Ermor and their summoned goons have made their move to win the game. the peaceful monkeys of Bandar Log have no need for violence, but they would like to point out to the world the collection of elemental royalty and other nasties that Ermor has. If Abysia falls to the old men invasion, the game is likely to be decided. perhaps the Tuatha should aid them? or the other old guys down south in Arco?

The 'old men' of Ermor are curious about these 'summoned goons' you mention, seeing as our rather small collection of elemental royalty are the only summons, goons or otherwise, so far involved in military operations.

LOL. And so my mighty tart prophet is paralyzed for 24 rounds on the first turn of combat by a lowly S2 mage (without boosters, no less). Paralyze is OP!!! ;) A good lesson, though: while my prophet's dominion boosted HP carried over into his first fight in hostile dominion his MR (which was a lot higher than 22 in dominion), regeneration, etc., did not. Probably should have known that. Oh well, at least my awesome Sidhe Lord raiders succeeded in their tasks.

Burnsaber
March 21st, 2010, 05:06 PM
You could flip a coin?
There is no need to keep on playing a stalemate game just because there "has to be" a winner. Perhaps we could just say that both nations are winners for the purposes of "getting" a spot for the next game?
The point of these is after all to eliminate the cripples ona after another and see which one is the worst. This game kinda proved that EA ermor and Tir'na'Org could win a game (if the opposition is just as crippled, of course :P).

That's an interesting idea. It would allow CF2 to continue without holding up CF3. You'd have one less nation for CF3 but by the time CF4 rolls around CF2 will have been decided and you can add a nation back into the mix. I think this is a good solution.

@ Burns - I could potentially return for CF3 if there's a spare spot open now that my RL has calmed down a bit. Although I'll need a new nation now that Squirrel's taken EA Ermor off the menu.
Although wondering if the remaining Cripples are now so few in numbers that CF3 will be too blitz like to genuinely call any win a win. Since the value of the likes of EA Abysia and Eriu goes up considerably if there's no late game to worry about. Maybe invite a few honourable Cripples to the show, such as MA Man, MA Agartha. Since both of those should never really be able to win a proper game. Other candidates possible as well.

We'll we are keeping the rules as same. No nations that have won a game. But, there are all those "0.5" wins on some nations because they have got a draw (which is not winning, although a special case might be brought up for this CF2 game). So there will be some new blood for the next game.
Also, it is my dream that someday we will really have just four nations or something left and just blitz until we have a clear loser, the most crippled of the crippled. The prophesied "anti-winner", the "unredeemable", the one that can only be gazed upon with pity. I want to know which nation is the worst in the game! Yes, those games with under 6 players won't be eligble for a HoF spot, but the wins from these games are quite disputable for the HoF spot already even with 6+ players (because the competition is seriously cut down)

I'm stickin to the "no win" rule. The current rules are just as arbitary, I know. But they are clear and not subject to opinions. If you made a thread asking for weak nations, we would likely get like 30 nations as candidates. If we put in MA Man (2 wins IIRC and a real cripple), we should likely also put in EA Ulm (2 wins too), if we put in EA Ulm, we should also put in EA R'lyeh (definately crippled and 1.5 wins), if we put EA R'lyeh, we shoul put in.. (etc)
It's a slippery slope my friend, leading to a absolute clusterf*ck :D
MA Oceania? A cripple? I shall need to defend their honor! (Hopefully by the time CF3 gets started a game or two will have ended, at least for me.)
I'll list the nations for the next game in this thread later today. I'll make a thread for CF 3 in easter or after it, depending on how my work and holiday days pan out.

It's good to be back Burns :) Not back 100% yet, but slowly freeing up 'me' time by trouble shooting my RL problem list.
Entirely your call on leaving it as 'Cripples' only. So only non-winners it is then. (which does include the 0.5's as you say).
But I demand an official enquiry into the accounts of MA Man. 2 wins. F$%£ OFF is all I have to say to that! Has JK/KO or QM been around with the steroids since I was last here or something? I demand answers, and a headcount on stuffed brown paper bags.
And didn't QM solve a lot of MA Oceania problems by getting rid of the magic path loss on land their mages suffer from. Or am I imagining that happened in the last CBM?!? (although that's not to say the nation isn't still struggling even with this boost)
Burnsaber
March 23rd, 2010, 08:43 AM
Okay, here is the list of nations for CF 3, assuming that the result from CF2 is inconclusive and both EA Ermor and EA Tir prove their non-crippletidute.
EARLY AGE:
Abysia: 0
Atlantis: 0.5*
MIDDLE AGE:
T'ien Ch'i: .5
Agartha: .5
Bandar Log: 0
Eriu: 0
LATE AGE:
Caelum: .5
Arcoscephale: 0 -- reserved by PM by Agent Smith
Atlantis: 0.5 -- reserved by PM by Frozen llama
*I'm not counting Kianduatha's win in Libra for this purpose, because the UWGIM mod used in the game is custom-build to improve UW nations and we are looking at CBM cripples. (I did count Kientsensei's Oceania win though, because HW is a more global mod, improving all nations at least somewhat the same level)

Well five players is basically a blitz and many of the nations listed have blitz wins, so I can say that it won't count for this purpose.
Blitz wins will only count after I say that they do, which is when we get down to under 6 nations :P. Although at that point I should probably make a spin-off game that just had weak nations in selection. I think that there is demand for crippletastic games.

Ok, then the game is over. That's two nations out of the mix for CF3.
It's certainly possible this could have gone on for a long time. Our gem incomes are so closely matched it would be hard to get a decisive advantage. I thought it was most likely to occur if one of us managed to cast a powerful global the other couldn't dispel. But again with the similar gem incomes this wouldn't have been easy.
