A30 Avenger

Another possible/optional unit for the British OOB (obat07) is the Avenger. It is already in winspww2: spob07/ Unit 138. The details for the Avenger in winspww2 are slightly inaccurate though. It did not have a bow machine gun, but it did have a .303 Bren AAMG instead.

The Avenger was developed during WW2, but was not delivered until 1946. It briefly equipped two SP artillery battalions in Germany after the war. They would have been used against the Soviets if the Cold War had turned hot. The Avenger was withdrawn from service in November 1950 because it was regarded as surplus to requirements.

Anybody know what the stuff on the turret roof is supposed to do

The Avenger’s turret was open topped with a roof perched over it. The stuff on the roof is probably the two hatch doors open and pushed forward.

It does look vaguely Tigerish from the front. Very box-like.

Right from the second picture its clear hatches simply flip forward from the centre but they sit on a raised structure above the turret roof not flush with it presumably to allow a panoramic view even when buttoned up. Only other reason I can think of is Avenger crews were very heavy smokers or it was designed with warm climates in mind, nice sunroof.
