View Full Version : Scruntlefut2 - 2v2v2v2 team game - Ended - Victory for Arco+Dwarfs!
Sombre
January 18th, 2010, 06:02 PM
Hello. This game will be run using llamaserver. I am assured no llamas are actually served by this device, either in the Tennis or the You Got Served - Take It To The Streets sense.
Players: 4 x 2 players
Map: Threelake (with very slight modifications)
Age: Middle Era
Mods: CBM 1.6, streamers and standards
Mod Nations: Yes. You may pick from Skaven, Bretonnia, Ogres, Dwarfs, Tomb Kings, Lizardmen. But only three mod nations in total will be allowed
Diplomacy/Trading: Only within your team (you may still talk to and taunt other teams for their old fashioned clothing and sexual impotence)
Indies: No Indies decided
Research + other settings: Normal
Mercs: No
Graphs: Yes
Victory conditions: Fully take 5 caps, or win by consensus
This is intended to be a casual game. This means that while winning and competition are important, they are secondary to the fun. If you feel like you aren't having fun for whatever reason and it isn't going to change, you can sub out the game, or change your playstyle to keep things fun. At the end of the game awards will be given out for cool stuff that happened and I'll take you all out for pizza and ice cream.
Newbies: You can join this game and no-one will shout at you for not knowing everything or doing things the way they want you to. On the other hand, there are some fairly wacky settings here so if you're going to join, be prepared.
Average Joe dom3: This game was made with you in mind.
Veterans: You can also join this game, but if you want to flat out prove you're the best in a balanced test of skill then maybe skip this one because it's casual and has odd settings.
If you're interested please sign up below expressing whether you'd like indies as recruitables on or off and which Middle Era nation you would like to use.

Does this mean you're not finishing that update to Lizardmen anytime soon?(Even though it's a bunch of nerfs)
Also, I'd like to play Dwarves.

Tien Chi, please.
I'd also say that independents recruiting should be allowed - even if my nation pick doesn't need it. :)
Also, could you be persuaded to NOT use CBM? ;) Especially as it looks like some new players would be present?

Blasphemy! Why start them using the wrong settings? Also, why intentionally create a game with non-unique gem gens - its like you're asking for pain.
I'd play, but I really don't need to join any more games right now. Maybe in about a month when a few more games i'm in have ended or at least have ended for me.

My vote is keep independents. And definitely use CBM.

Oh, now it's blashemy!? Pray tell the poor heretic where in Holy Writ CBM is mentioned as Word of the Lord? :angel Or maybe you just shouldn't play Marignon so much? ;)
And why settings made by game developers are suddenly wrong? And CBM is the only right? Instead of, say, chrispetersen's balance mod?
As for what I am asking for is: at least some elements of economy; AoE weapons requiring research; etc. What I listed is the things I noted in the latest version, but there are others which logic escapes me. I agree with some of CBM's changes, but not with others. And I am absolutly not sure that authors of nation mods used kept CBM in mind as to what their nations should be balanced against - nor should they!

Well considering the mods in this case are those of Sombre and Burnsaber, I suspect that they did indeed have CBM in mind. Also, I would take squirrel's post with a heavy dose of hyperbole.

This is a CBM game, that setting isn't up for discussion. Indies are up for discussion though - so far seems like people want them.
All the mod nations available to pick from were made with CBM in mind.
First post updated.

Underwater nations are pickable btw, limited to only 1 in the game.
Edit: In fact balls to it, I'm picking atlantis. Atlantis hooooooooh!

I was in a hurry earlier and didn't think about the setting preferences:
-I partially agree on No Independents: I can't recall if it's doable or not through a mod or map commands, but would it be possible to allow only some of them, like some of the omnipresent nature mages, or the very rare populations. Honestly the main reason I like No Independents is to avoid the indiscriminated use of the human Commanders to ferry troops around or as decoys, thus making national troop leaders all but useless. So, if we could allow only some of them, that would be great, else I vote for no independents at all.
-About mercenaries: Why would you forbid them? I find them an integral part of the game, especially for getting started in paths a nation doesn't normally have. I vote for them to be on, if others agree.

This is partially negated by CBM itself, where independent commanders are made more costly and national ones cheaper. I can even find an in-game explanation for this... :D
So an additional change here isn't really necessary. And, on the other hand, not all nations have, say scouts. And said scouts are surely much more useful on the front line than marching all the way from your capital! :D
About mercenaries: Why would you forbid them? I find them an integral part of the game, especially for getting started in paths a nation doesn't normally have. I vote for them to be on, if others agree.
This I don't know and don't really care. They are fun, surely. But playing TC, I can live without them. Especially as with 8 players it would be quite difficult to secure the ones you need.
A question to Sombre: do I understand correctly that you will assign teams after all players will be ready? Or is it for players themselves to decide? Or something in between?
Sombre
January 19th, 2010, 01:15 PM
Mercs: I don't like mercs and don't think they add anything to the game. This setting isn't negotiable (too many negotiable settings slow everything down too much). I may well make games in the future where mercs are on, or negotiable, though. Not trying to be a tyrant, just smoothing the game creation stage :]
CBM and indies: People still don't hire national commanders with CBM on. They might hire slightly less indy commanders, but I doubt it. They definitely don't hire less scouts. It isn't really comparable with NI, where national commanders and scouts are both totally hireable (though perhaps only at certain points in the game).
NI setting: I love to play NI, so I think it's 2 for and 2 against currently (correct me if I missed one). In the event of a tie, it's NI. So anyone else with a strong preference should speak up regarding that now.
Teams: It might cause problems for teams to be entirely random but I assume most people don't mind that much who they team with, so it's 'somewhere in between'. If you want to team with someone else in the game and they want to team with you, announce that. For anyone left I'll just randomly assign the teams.

Jurri says he'd like NI setting on as well, so 3 yes to NI, 2 no so far. I await more feedback on that from other players, otherwise it's NI.
Jurri and I would like to team up since we both live on IRC. Normally I'd say that might be a bit strong, but our nations aren't too hot, so it's probably ok.

I just attached the combined mod to the first post.
I welcome suggestions for starting provinces on the threelake map. Though we're using a modified version, the only major change is that the impassable mountains can now be crossed via one of their provinces. I want team mates to start near each other.

Hmm, well, I did make a mod for exactly this purpose, so if this was a popular request it could be used. I'd suggest raising magic site settings if using that mod though, because it uses magic sites to add the indies back in.

Of course not! :D And I'll burn in hell.
By the way, I meant exactly what I said: I don't like WH Dwarves. For their playstyle of unmoved gunline, quite easy to use, quite difficult to do something about - unless you are 22-casting dice Tzeentch Chaos, or something as improbable! And for lack of alternative tactics, too. :)
As for Dwarves mod - well, they are in possible danger to attract players who like the style described above. On the other hand, Dominions have some methods of curtailing such. Mod itself has its good and bad features, of course. Ogres look like somewhat better implemented as mod for me, even though I don't like them in WH even more. :D

So you're 50/50 on whether you want to play? I'm kinda looking for more enthusiasm than that. It sounds like someone else might enjoy the slot more. Maybe I'm getting the wrong impression though so I'll ask again:

That's a good question. We may have to ask llama on that one. I'll have a scout around to see if I can finda similar problem and how it was resolved, also.

We had that in Dramatica, it was tied to Dwarfs sharing a nation number with some LA mod nation already up one the llamaserver, which made the server think that it was a different nation mod entirely.
I posted a fixed version, available here (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showpost.php?p=720059&postcount=50). It clahses with Arga Dis, but that shouldn't be a problem.
Sombre
January 25th, 2010, 09:48 AM
Ogres was running into the same problem. If I have to change all the nation numbers for the mod and map (to replace vanilla MA nations) I will, but it would probably be better as an overall llamaserver fix. Surely it renders singleage games impossible also?
Sombre
January 25th, 2010, 12:54 PM
What I'm going to do is recreate the game as Scruntlefut2 and set it to multi-age rather than middle age. That should work fine with the current combined mod if I understand this problem correctly.
You'll have to resubmit pretenders of course. I'll let you know when I've created the game and I'll delete the old one too.

Amonchakad
January 27th, 2010, 11:20 AM
It's most likely a problem with mod nations.
Sombre
January 27th, 2010, 02:39 PM
The game was set up to use the map "NI_Scruntlefut_Threelake" with the filename being "Scruntlefut_Threelake" so if it's asking for anything else that's a worrying error in and of itself. Other than the "Threelake.tga" of course, which you need to have.
Is anyone else having this problem with the map?
I definitely selected the combined mod and it appears as such on the llamaserver, but Jurri thinks the game itself may not be using the combined mod, which would lead to the errors we're seeing.
There's nothing wrong with the combined mod or the map, so it must be the way llamaserver is handling it. I'm confused as to why this problem is happening because plenty of mod nation games have run on llamaserver before, even using combined mods.
Sombre
January 27th, 2010, 03:44 PM
Ok, Jurri and I have gotten to the bottom of this problem and tested the solution.
Here's what you guys have to do.
1. Rename the file "Scruntlefut Combined Mod.dm" to "scruntlefut.dm"
2. Redo you pretender exactly as before, with this mod enabled (it obviously looks exactly the same as the previous mod) You may wish to clear the old pretender out of the newlords folder before doing this to avoid confusion.
3. Submit your new pretender to the game with this exact name: "Scruntlefut3"
That should all work fine.

Spaces in filenames are the biggest bane of the llamaserver. It has code to refuse to accept files with spaces in, which works when I test it, but apparently not for anyone else. I really should sit down and fix it one day, but the thing is I don't really ever sit down and concentrate at a computer at home before about 11pm these days, at which point I want to read the news and go to bed. The non-computer use is because I have put my computer in the lounge, which is generally full of distracting housemates.

Sloth is perfectly fine for skaven, though prod has its own advantages. Skaven are just generally a very difficult race, and having a horribly gimped teammate doesn't really help when fighting an early game powerhouse like the dwarfs.

They aren't, they're just beating your team up. Haven't done a thing to the other two teams.
I also don't think you're really in a position to judge, since literally any nation would have beaten you down, simply based on your expansion. Even MA Oceania could have walked amphibious troops over and left you on 0 provinces. You just need to have faster expansion than you did, in MP games.

Yeah, I'm doing fine in my other game- just only played this race once before in SP. And I lost my first 2x armies to independents.

Sorry for the delays, I've been delirious with a high fever the past 40 hours or so. Got my wife to postpone hosting. I should be fine to take a turn today.

I see Skaven have gone AI.
Will they ever survive past early game? They're 0 for 5 currently.

They did reasonably well in Dramatica. Top 3 nation until Baalz just won the game with insane bloodsaccing.
But, IMHO, they could a small boost to beef up their early game a bit. Having a poor early game is a bit of a "Mark of Doom" in MP game. See Maverni for a example what happens to a nation when it is widely know that it has poor early game.

Yep, I set myself AI after my capital was taken and I had 1 province left. I must admit that I hadn't a very good idea of what I was doing - I actually found the Skaven a very hard race to understand.

Only problem with that is the AI recruited mercs. Which is a little bit unfair on the dwarfs.
Naughty cheating AI. Didn't it read the game rules?

Well these are my first multi, and I haven't even played 3.0 much- played 2.0 a lot back in the day. So I'm just having fun. My other game I'm doing much better anyway, even if not close to a well oiled machine. I don't even remember which branch I need for the spell to mess with arrow fire in battles...sad.

Can we extend the clock to 36 hours? I am not sure how long I can keep fending off the models, adult film stars, and actresses who want to date me in order to get my turns in on time.

Well, just be sure they aren't Queens! Of course that assumes you mind a bit of masculinity in your "girlfriends". You should date fluffers. I hear they are excellent conversationalists.

I do have to say, even if I would have a good-ish army, for my people, at some time the dwarves would have toasted me.

Nah...I didn't have the production to take both you and Skaven if the both of you were actually working together/expanding/using real troops. Shinuyama if anything is one of the best nations to try and take down Dwarves with, since you have the high-attack high-damage Dai Bakemono and the incredibly high damage O-Bakemono to actually deal with me.
SnallTrippin
February 21st, 2010, 09:28 AM
...I had 15 of them do like 0 damage to your 20 rune guards.

February 21st, 2010, 09:47 AM
15 vs 20 is not even remotely close on a gold vs gold basis. If you had ~40, that would be much closer (and would quite possibly win, or at least do significant damage). Also the rune guards are cap only vs recruit-everywhere dai bakemono, so if you had mutiple forts it would be trivial to make many times the numbers of dai bakemono as the dwarves have runeguard.

Maybe 60v20. 40v20 I think is still no contest, but frankly this was my first multi and my other (That I was playing at the same time) is much more fun. First time I've actually had to set my tactics really, quite love it and look forward to more in the future and sucking less.

Can't compare sacreds and regular troops on a gold cost basis anyway. The bless is a big design cost.

Yep. By the way, I'm really appreciating the raiding--it's giving me a much better idea of what you can get away with/what you actually need to deal with PD. I especially like the 'one thug plus some support casters' idea.
Sombre
February 27th, 2010, 07:12 PM
Sadly atlantis doesn't really have the best raiding and dwarfs are really, really hard to raid. Autocurse PD, high damage AP stuff - magic weapons :[
Sorry for the long extension on this turn guys. I am moving stuff between computers and I'm not able to take a turn for another 12 hours or so. I thought it better to extend than to stale.

By the way I see you have crawled out of the sea to scavenge. Are you going to jump back in and wait to feed on whatever sinks to the bottom, or are you going to attack? Those Niefel flames look scary.
Some brave monkey mages allowed us to finally got revenge for the slaughter of our army at the battle of the flaming elephants.
I think being on defense is a big advantage. Not only do I have a good idea of what is coming, I get first casting turn. It would be nice to be able to go on the offensive for once though.

Yeah that was absolutely brutal--and if my Anvils had gotten even a single round to cast, I would've won that battle too.

Is this game over? It seems some people are still submitting turns. But as far as I know the Greek Dwarf team controls 5 capitals. If it is over, congratulations to the Greek Dwarves.

Whelp, I cleanly control 4 caps now...if Arcosephale held onto his, then I think we're done. At least this resulted in the rebalancing of Dwarfs to be more in line with...everyone else. Gone forever are the days like this last turn with 7 Anvils of Doom raining molten death on some poor monkeys. Ugh.

Yeah, I got pretty creamed on IrC as a result of this game (it was for a good reason though).
So umm. Yes. I'm sorry about the OP Dwarfs. I think I just got my "dwarf fanboy" attidude get the better of me when making the mod.
Note that even the newest version could use some fine-tuning with the costs and stuff, but I'll cross that bridge after I'm done with updating my other mods.
