I have a question. Is it possible to target buildings rather than units? I have tried with planes but they always seem to go after units.

No, it ain't, but you can z-Fire onto it, and target it with a plane if no one near he may drop bombs on the building, anyway, destroying buildings is just another way to improve enemy cover

Level bombers target the hex not units however better have in LOS or bomb run can be off by a bit. Fighter bombers no hard & fast rule I can find just had 2 make a pass in target rich enviroment both killed vehicles with gun & rockets first dropped its bombs second did not bother. To target a hex as in force a bombing run I find switching off the other weapons works.

Strike aircraft decide on targets on their own - you are simply telling the pilot the general area to look. He then decides what interests himself when he arrives, and selects an enemy (or friendly) unit at his whim or area fires as a strafe if there is nothing of interest.

Exception - if you target a bridge hex the plane tends to go for that.

Level bombers don't target any unit, they are a form of artillery (that is why they do not have TI RF etc), they determine an X,Y near where you specify and offload bombs there. A 1940s bomber at night will wander more than a 1990s bomber. (The bomber class was really only introduced for scenario use, for e.g the breakout from Normandy, or Vietnam 'arc-lights').

Ground units can use Z-fire on buildings or other hexes.
