Will different versions work together for PBEM?

I don't mean in the long run, will they even run the same save game file from a new PBEM game?
(meaning one has 4.5 and the other has 5)
Because one opponent isn't sure if he patched the game when he joined the PBEM game.

That's what I thought, but he claimed the patch didn't work properly the first time or something like that, and he forgot to tell me, or something like that.
