After downloading the two free versions, I was thinking buying a cd version (for op fire options).
Does cd screen resolution offers a big improvement ?
I still hesitate betwween winSPMBT(+ most popular ?: post numbers) or WinSPWW2( + long campaign).
Do yo think that the common software engine seems more apropriate to simulate ww2 era or modern era ?

Yes the CD does offer a big screen resolution improvement over the download version. The best thing about the additional resolution is that you have a larger strategic view of the map, able to see the relationship of more units.
The game engine was originally designed for WW2, but works great with MBT. I wouldn't base your descision on this.
I would base your decision on what period of military history and what battles and equipment you are interested in.
I think MBT is more popular than WW2 because of a lack of competition. There's quite a few WW2 wargames out there, but there really is no other modern era, top down, IGOUGO game.

Screen resolution offers a massive improvement if you play the game at all regulary that alone is worth buying the CD for. Op fire filter is more usefull in MBT in my view but buy the game you play most first should be your criteria.
Be warned though after you have bought it you will not play the other one till have bought it to as will realise just how bad the graphics were it is after all a 1970s resolution.

1152 (x864) game functions in full and windowed screen
1280 (x1024) game functions only in windowed screen
1600 (x1200) game functions only in windowed screen

As you say thats because your lap top does not support them, native resolution is 1440x900 higher resolutions exceed the 900 but it sounds like the next patch will supply more options hopefully with 1440x900 (950?) as its common.

Before you decide enough to play both games. I bought the ww2 and now I'm playing more PBEM with MBT. Ww2 time I played a lot so I decided to buy it. But now more use MBT.
One thing to consider besides the resolution is the number of slots they'll have to save PBEM games.
Try to play multiple games PBEM and see what you like best.
Besides the free versions are very comprehensive.
