I updated the list. Game is now full; apologies to Numahr and 13lackGu4rd who didn't make it in time, and thanks to everyone who joined- I did not expect that the game would fill up within 8 or so hours of me posting it!
Some of the other players have emailed me privately with time constraints this week. Therefore, I will aim to start the game probably on Friday. That should give us some time to create pretenders and decide on strategy.
Good luck, and enjoy the game!

Whoever just cast Storm in NY, quit it! Umbrella useless. Soo drenched! :P
In other news, I pestered Groundworm and my understanding is that he had some minor technical difficulties, but it sounds like they're pretty much resolved. I got the impression that he'll have the game up on Llamaserver shortly so we can start uploading our pretenders. I hope..?

FYI, for anyone who hasn't done one of these Llamaserver games before (ie. like me, since this is my first) there's a FAQ here on the Shrapnel forums on what to do:

Just got done reading it myself. :)

Dominions crashes when I try to load the trn file I was just sent. This is under MacOS 10.5.8. The trn file is in
/Users/MyUserName/dominions3/savedgames/MonkeyParadise
The only immediately obvious difference between the trn file I received and the ones saved by my SP games is that the one from llamaserver has extended attributes.
This is my first time playing with llamaserver, so the help of more experienced players would be appreciated to resolve this problem.
Thanks!
Dark Kitty

I am not familiar with MacOS but it is more or less based on Unix, the program trying to access a file it has no rights over might be shut down by the system? Does your file has the right rights and/or owner/group? (man chown/chmod/chgrp for more info)
mockingbird
July 16th, 2010, 05:05 PM
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think that's it, as it has the same permissions as all of my other saved games:
ls -alt@ late_marignon.trn
-rw-r--r-- 1 username 502 94922 Jul 16 13:58 late_marignon.trn
I removed (or so it seems) the extended attribute using
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine late_marignon.trn
I also tried grabbing the attachment again and just opening it directly with dominions, to no avail.

July 16th, 2010, 05:22 PM
Just to confirm, you're running the latest patch level (Dominions 3.24) with CBM 1.6 enabled (in the mod preferences screen), correct?
One thing you could try: Put up your own 2 player test game on Llamaserver with just you and an AI and see if it works. Try it with this map, and maybe try one with a different map. Or you could try a local game on your machine with this map (I hope it's not the map!).
Allium

Yeah, I found out when I tried to play my first turn that I'd forgotten to update to 3.24, so that's worth a check.

Sorry for the slacking on getting my 1st turn in. I'm travelling this weekend, and while I think I should be fine with the 24 hour timer I may end up using more of it than would otherwise be necessary for these quick starting turns.
I'll be back home Monday night (and will then need to look for new excuses for my slacking). :)

I notice that since the turn timer was increased to 36 hours, turns have been generated almost exactly every 36 hours. This is understandable every once in awhile, but for most of this game C'tis has been the last to submit their turn, and for just as long the turn has been submitted at the 36th hour.
I realize that we all have busy schedules and lives to attend to, but really? Waiting till the last minute every single turn is somewhat difficult to accept. Am I wrong in thinking this way?

I'm out of this game. Real life is not allowing me to continue. I've sent in the current turn.
I'd recommend looking for a sub my position seems quite strong. I'm not currently at war with anyone. Hard to say without graphs on but I haven't seen anything to suggest a major research deficit and my province count seems respectable. My pretenders still dead but he was only really there to turbocharge expansion and forge a few boosters I was able to trade for anyway.

I'm sorry to hear it, Bonfire, but life does come first. Hope everything is all right, and you've been a welcome part of a good game.

Did anyone else not receive the turn file this turn? I checked Llamaserver, which is the only reason I knew that the turn had cycled (so I requested a turn resend for myself). If anyone else hasn't received their turn yet, please remember that you can have Llamaserver resend the turnfile to you.

So we have reached the critical point in this game. Abysia has over 50 provinces, over a dozen forts, and is likely the lead in research. And that was before Abysia finished knocking over Midgard. I don't believe that any of the rest of us anywhere close to that.
My fellow Pretenders, we have two choices: either we band together NOW, while we have a chance to stop Abysia, or we each give up on the possibility of becoming Pantokrator. This is the stark reality of the situation.
Inindo
September 13th, 2010, 09:54 PM
What's a Pantokartor? Actually the rest of Midgard lands are already mostly spoken for by another nation. Interesting words though. To be fair 10 of those came the last 2 or so turns courtesy of Midard conquests after I managed to kill all the commanders of all his raiding forces and rout his leaderless skinshifters, besides, those 5 on the far coast bordering your lands are write offs since I will never be able to hold them against you once our war breaks out. I have to admit I do like castles in general, while you preferred to spend your gold bumping all your PD to 20, I spent mine on castles, helps to keep the heat in during the long winters. You yourself are hovering around 40 provinces a chunk of which also seem to have come the last 2 turns courtesy of Bogarus, no? And Tien chi is pretty big too just to be fair, although I'm not sure how big these days since my former scouts kept getting caught in the Bogarus-Tien Chi cross fire :P And don't hide all those Earth and Fire elemental kings you've summoned with your Forge lord god in that special province with what I'm guessing is bonus blood or nature site you have there. Not to mention I'm pretty sure you have most, if not all the demon lords as well since I don't have a single one. We shall just have to see if your Aegis/Crop of pain sickle wielding fallen angle can take my father Illearth in a death match!
mockingbird
September 13th, 2010, 10:56 PM
You can try to muddy the waters all you want in a graphs off game, but when it comes right down to it, the facts are the facts.
You have over 50 provinces and a dozen castles (that you just crushed Midgard, a reasonably advanced nation themselves, and grabbed over 10 provinces in the space of but a few turns hardly is a good argument for your harmlessness). I know that I only have 35 provinces including the ones I just obtained from the dying Bogarus, and by my count no one else in the game has much more than that. Which means you have half again as much in the way of resources (gold, gems, troop and mage production centers) as anyone else.
Anyone else with halfway decent scouting can verify that this is the truth.
My fellow pretenders, if you're not scared of Abysia you should be. Because the way things are going Abysia is just going to pick us off one by one and then turn around and steamroll those who thought to profit in the short term from its conquests.

According to another game admin who had to roll back, no one else needs to submit their turn and you can just force host one the person who needed to submit has their turn in, the other turns should still be in the server. Afterwords, make sure to delete the old .2h file in your directory before you open up the new .trn file, don't just overwrite over the old one. Otherwise, it's possible that weird stuff like commanders changing their magic paths do to a lack of sanity checking in the Dom3 server code.

Groundworm

Groundworm
October 2nd, 2010, 05:37 PM
Just let it pass. I'll try to be more diligent about the turn timer. Sorry, work was really rough the past few days.
That being said... there seems to be absolutely no interest on anyone's part in subbing for Jomon, and I'm not certain what to do about that.

Hi guys,
I have just received the turn file for Jomon and Groundworm has given me 48 hours to figure out my position. I'd appreciate if the current players, particulary my neighbors, could let me know what to expect from them (NAP, war, etc.). A summary of current events would also be a big help. Thanks.
mockingbird
October 3rd, 2010, 04:52 PM
I just woke up and found a message from four hours ago saying that MonkeyParadise was about to cycle in six hours.
I think we all, especially our new Jomon replacement, need more time than that!
Please extend the turn.
Hylobius
October 3rd, 2010, 05:53 PM
When I received the Jomon turn the message said that turns were due 22:10 GMT on Tuesday October 5.
Hylobius
October 3rd, 2010, 05:57 PM
It is a little awkward subbing into a game with binding diplomacy without being able to verify with the previous player what agreements are in place. My first inclination is to offer everyone a NAP-3.
Groundworm
October 4th, 2010, 01:43 AM
That's strange. Llamaserver agrees with Hylobius, that the next turn was due on Tues, Oct. 5. Nonetheless, I've extended the turn 48 hours beyond that, so everyone can feel free to take their time. I'll extend the turn farther if need be.
Hylobius, from my end: I've had no real diplomacy with Jomon at all this game.
Hylobius
October 5th, 2010, 11:53 AM
I have spoken with my neighbors and most of the rest of the players in the game. I will of course be honoring the NAPs that the previous player had in place. I have decided to promise not to attack anyone for 3 turns while I become more familiar with the position. This is not an offer of NAPs, just a three turn break where I will only be defending myself. Diplomatic chanels will of course be open during this time. I'll try and finish off my turn tonight.

Hrum
October 7th, 2010, 12:31 PM
It looks like Hylobius hasn't submitted the turn for Jomon yet, and at this point we've only got less than 6 hours until it's set to cycle.
Maybe we should extend the turn to give him a chance to submit his turn..?
What do you guys think?
Personally, I'd hate to see a sub come in and do us a favor by taking over Jomon for us and not get a chance to submit his first turn (that nation already had one stale while we were looking for a sub).
If we extend the turn another 24 hours, will that be enough time for you Hylo?
Hylobius
October 7th, 2010, 01:21 PM

Dear Fellow Monkey Appreciators:
Due to my travel schedule, I most likely will not be able to get my next turn in before sometime on Tuesday PST. I appreciate the offer, Inindo, but I don't think it would be a good idea for me to take over Abysia. For one, I think I have too much inside information to the other nations left in the game. More importantly, I don't think I have the time or the interest to assimilate your massive empire, which is also far more advanced in research and summoned units than anything I've ever played with in Dominions.

Excellent game, Inindo, and thank you for playing as long as possible. I will extend the current turn indefinitely while we look for a sub.

It's now been over a week that we're looking for a sub, and there has been absolutely no interest despite multiple bumps and pleas. I am not sure what to do about this. Any suggestions?

It really would be nice to finish this game somehow.

Sorry I haven't been posting much. Work got crazy busy, so while I've been sad that Inindo couldn't continue as Abysia (seriously GG, Dude), and that the game has been on hold while we (hopefully?) sort out a stand-in, the timing was kind of good for me what with stuff being nuts.
Given that Groundworm is out of this game as a player, I think he's been doing a fine job trying to track down a sub, but I guess it's probably hard to find new players out there who are willing to take over for this one. Abysia is so well established and the game is obviously drawing toward a close - I guess it isn't easy to step in and take over a nation that large and advanced, with large and advanced opponents.
Seems to me we have 3 options:
1. Keep waiting and searching for a new-ish player to sub for Abysia.
If choosing this option, we should probably choose a timelimit. And if we're going to do this one of the remaining players should probably take this over from Groundworm. He's done a fine job, but I don't think it would be right for us to expect him to continue to cast about looking for subs for us in a game in which he's no longer playing.
2. Accept non-newb subs (even vets?).
This could be rough for those that are at war with Abysia or might soon be (or, well, everyone, since Abysia has a commanding position with a decent chance of victory in the hands of a skilled newb, nevermind a vet). However, it does increase the likelihood that we could find a sub and avoid the 3rd option...
3. Set Abysia AI.
This option really has one main selling point: We get to go on with the game. No more waiting.
Of course, I still have a bit of a crazy week at work and in RL in general, so I'm cool with not making up our minds until next week. :)
What're your thoughts? Are there other options that I'm not thinking of? What're everyone's preferences?

Putting Abysia in the hands of a veteran would be pretty deadly. Perhaps we could lean on Groundworm or the other players who have been eliminated to pick up Abysia. Setting Abysia AI would be a last resort.

I considered taking over for Abysia, but I decided that it was something I just don't want to do. My apologies to the rest of you, but I'm not that experienced with the Dominions endgame. I'm reaching the endgame in another game I've been playing from the beginning, and it's fun but very taxing to my poor inferior brain. I can't imagine how I'd begin to assimilate a nation as big as Abysia from the ground up.
So, my apologies, but I must continue to decline. :(

I don't have any experience with CBM and with Abysia.
Will give it a try, would be a shame if the AI had to take over.
I send Groundworm the Email-Adress?

I'm very pleased that you're willing to step in and take a shot at this. I was beginning to resign myself to this game stagnating. I think we'll all need a little time to get up to speed with the game again, but you'll want to get the detailed briefing from Inindo if possible.
You know, so you can rule the world. Evil laugh sold separately.

Muahahaha! (?)
Seriously, Korwin, thanks for sub-ing for Abysia. Inindo did a great job of getting his nation into a dominating position and it would've been sad to see Abysia get taken over by the AI.
We all appreciate you helping us see this game through to the bitter end.
And now, I must go try to remember what the heck I was doing in this game...

I don't have a problem with reducing the cycle time, although I'd like it to be no less than 96 hours.
I'll probably still be the first one to submit a turn 95% of the time, though. ;)
Also, since I've never cast Astral Corruption before, I don't know whether you get to see the battles thus induced, but in case you missed it, you managed to cause my first Doom Horror attack in a multiplayer game.
Congratulations. :(

Correct?

I submitted my turn a couple of hours ago, and the turn apparently still hasn't cycled. And now it's occuring to me, maybe I was supposed to patch my Dom3 install to 3.26?
Does anyone know if patching is necessary to keep using Llamaserver, or can we keep using 3.24 since that's what this MonkeyParadise began with?
Allium
January 22nd, 2011, 01:01 AM
You do need to patch, but that shouldn't affect the turn you sent in:
Anyway:
- The server is now upgraded to 3.26. Hooray! This is an excellent patch for modding. :)
- You can send turns in using either version. You will get no problems either way.
- When you get new turns back from the server, you will only be able to open them with 3.26. If you try to open them using 3.24 then dominions will tell you to upgrade (like Executor said, I think).
- Basically it is impossible to do anything wrong. :)

Korwin

We are sad about that double standard employed by Tien Chi.
Forge of the Ancients, etc. from Marignon wasnt an reason to war?
I was only acting in self defence.
Anyway shouldnt have that war declaration have come before your attack?
(Did we have an harbor in that province? Anyway we will call it Pearl Province...)
Vengeance is on the way.
OOC: Looks like I'll be shortly on war footing with the rest of the world (except Mictlan). As second strongest nation (at least thats my impression)
Allium
January 22nd, 2011, 03:04 PM
Tien Chi has a single standard: Forge of the Ancients does not interfere with the actions of our mages. Arcane Corruption does.
If the declaration arrived before the attack, then it would not be a surprise, now would it?
(Actually, I was going to send it in game simultaneously with the attack, but, er, I forgot.)
Hylobius

A minor clarification, Jomon has terminated our NAP with Abysia, we have not declared war. However, I tend to agree with TC about those globals.
Korwin
January 23rd, 2011, 07:42 AM
Forge of the Ancients got dispelled by my Astral Corruption.
Astral Nexus by Marignon is still up. And if you think it doesnt hurt you in the long term, you are badly mistaken...
Since nobody dispelled those globals, I had to take desperate measures.
@Yomon if you are terminating the NAP, I see it as an declaration of war in X turns.
But to see the brighter side, hopefully I get more successes in Tien Chi than in Marignon :D
Allium
January 23rd, 2011, 06:30 PM
Oh, I'll agree Arcane Nexus is more powerful than Astral Corruption. But Astral Corruption is much more annoying.

Things have gotten somewhat crazy for me at work so 4 days might be a little rough for me. Would 5 or 6 days work?
I know it's not fair to you guys (specifically those of you who are really good about getting your turns in early) to have the game drag on like this, but I think 5 or 6 days would be a dramatic improvement on the 10 day cycle we've been running, while still giving people enough time to deal with our increasingly complex turns.
