I've played in 3 multiplayer Dominions games, so I still classify myself as pretty new. Trying to find people with similar amounts of experience. First-time players are welcome, as are people with a little more experience- say at most 10 MP games.
Era: late age
newbs only
8 players
mods: CBM 1.6
map: Shahrivar (no special sites)
disallowed nations: R'lyeh, Atlantis
site frequency: 45
score graphs off
hall of fame: 15 entries
renaming on
diplomacy is binding
Turns will initially be on a 24-hour timer, and will be increased as requested. Extensions will also be granted as needed (though hopefully not frequently).
1) Bogarus- Groundworm
2) Mictlan- mockingbird
3) Ermor- puntocom
4) C'tis- Allium
5) Pythium- Ragnars Wolves
6) Agartha- Fantomen
7) Caelum- Marmaduke
8) Man- camobeercan

Just a thought...if you only have 1 underwater nation, they have for the most part unrestricted expansion and the security of water. From what I understand, whenever this map is played (and it iS a GREAT map) there usually are no water nations allowed.
Just an opinion, your game.
Also, Thank you for having a game with CBM 1.6 and not 10 other new mods I know nothing about.

Welcome, everybody! I've updated the first post to include you all.
Ragnars Wolves- you raise a good point, and I appreciate you speaking your mind on it. I don't know if a water nation would be overpowered or not, but there is that possibility. And since Allium is considerate and agreeable enough to change to C'tis, this problem is solved. Thanks to you both.
mockingbird: I have linked the map in the first post as requested. And yes, I'm using llamaserver as the host.
I'm quite pleased at the people we've got involved in this game so far, and look forward to playing with you. :)

Uh, I don't think that's the right map file. The original is here: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com//attachment.php?attachmentid=6386&d=1214247273
I think this is the map file that's up on llamaserver as shahrivar_nosites, but as you have the original I don't think we actually need that since only the server looks at it:

Thanks for uploading that map file, Allium. I don't know why it crashed on mockingbird's machine when it worked on mine, but hopefully this solves the problem.

It was actually me who uploaded the sharival_nosites.map to llamaserver. If that's the one we're using, everyone needs a tga file named Shahrivar_Som.tga. You can just make a copy of the other sharivar tga and rename it.
Changing the path in the .map file on your own computer will only solve the problem for SP tests but not for the actual mp game, since it is the .map file on llamaserver that is used in that case.

So... I'm confused. I've got a working file of Shahrivar with no sites locally on my computer (actually, I have 2). But when I'm putting the game up on llamaserver, which map file do I need to use? I don't think the ones currently on llamaserver have the no-site version of Shahrivar.
Should I upload one of my copies that works to llamaserver?
Edit: never mind, I just noticed the Shahrivar: nosites map on llamaserver. Will that work?

You might not even start out near Ermor, there are 6 other players after all.
Uh, why are you posting as Grudgebringer?
Ragnars Wolves
September 5th, 2010, 04:36 PM
GrudgeBringer is my Stepdad, my wife and I live on his property in the guest house. We where over there and I was talking to him about changing my pick in my first MP game and he informed me that Abysia didn't have a LA nation.
Soooo, in case Morningstar got back in town and got his pretender in I just jumped on his computer and posted without thinking So I wouldn't hold up the game. And for the next question.....NO, he will not be helping me. In fact we have a $20dollar bet on how long I last in this game.
However, that does bring up a point and I guess I should have made it clear up front. The powers that be at Dom3 have approved it and if you ask anyone that knows GrudgeBringer, he is like a Palidin in a rpg game. NEVER breaks his word and plays the Lawful good to the max. ( I find it amusing, but he is well respected on here...check his friends list).
I have a different E-mail address but play off his computer by wireless. It is a strange situation, I can post on his comp but it comes up as GrudgeBringer. HOWEVER, because the turns are sent to MY comp on MY Gmail account, he can't see the turns and I can't do the turns from his comp. In other words we are seperate enities except for the fact that we are both logged in to Dom on the same account (so to speak) but have different E-mail address.
Hope that puts everyone at ease. It will be a Loooooog while before I try and take on the Old Man in the same game, I assure you.
If anyone has a problem or question you can PM me or for that matter PM him, like I said he ALWAYS takes the high road.:o

This is exactly why my stepdad didn't want me playing on his account by wireless.
First, I take offense that you don't believe me. Why would I lie? To play in a game with all new guys (except you who has 10 games by your own admission under your belt).
Second, I also take offense that you would think Grudgebringer would do that in the first place. You must not have played with him before to say that. And if you REALLY think this is some kind of evil plot so that he could play and win a game agianst new guys.....take it up with him (and then I'm SURE I will hear about it in no uncertain terms). Besides, if you know him you know he ALWAYS plays Arco.
If this brings a cloud over your game Groundworm, I apologize and will bow out. But your welcome to check with the people who run Dom as we had to clear it with them before we could do this (Annette I think was her name).

Easy, Ragnar... sounds to me like Fantomen was just giving you some good-natured ribbing.
Abysia does have a late age nation, Blood of Humans. But my advice is to pick one nation, and try to develop a strategy for it. Since you've chosen Pythium and it sounds like you've got some field testing done with them in single player, work with it and see what you can do.
You probably won't win the game, but you'll almost definitely learn something.

Sorry, I may be a might touchy as I had a rather 'long' conversation about playing this game with my stepdad and the ramifacations it could have on him before I joined this. He mentioned he knew of 2 sets of brothers playing but not on the same type hook up.
Only because Dom gave thier permission did he allow it and my stupidity of using his computer to leave a message never occured to me that it would show his name. NOW, I have to hear it from him also.
Sorry Fantoman if you where just messin with me or my dad and you guys are friends.
All I want to do is play the game, take my lumps and come back for more (but better prepared)/ Pythium is a neat nation for SP as I have found out. But I am not skilled enough yet to counter the counters (if that makes sense).
When your ready...let er rip

September 6th, 2010, 03:33 AM
I don't know about the GrudgeBringer/Ragnar thing (on the Internet nobody knows I'm a dog), but why is Pythium especially bad vs Ermor? Out of the box, they have level 2 priests with nature (no need for supplies) and solid melee troops to shield the priests while mass banishments take place.
I have yet to play my first MP game on this forum, but I was under the impression that in Dom3 the metagame replaces gameplay balance, i.e. everybody knows Ermor cannot be allowed to grow and gangs on him asap with armies of priests.

NO, I am going to stay Pythium (I stayed up toooooo late screwing around with it last night to change now), thanks for checking though.
And Fantoman, yes, you are right, it DID look and sound funny as I look back at it. I guess I was sensitive to the discussion I had with GB about this very thing and after screwing up and using his computer....
It was like this whole damn thing was scripted JUST the way he said he didn't want it to happen, and I was waiting for the other shoe to drop (or worse, he cut me off of his internet connection as I am in Grad school and money is REAL hard to come by right now). We discussed this last night and he said if you where serious you would have gone to him (as Sept somebody did on the Traitors game (which is the game he wanted me to start with) as this guy knew the IP address right off since GB has been on 2 winning teams in Noobs vs Vets).
He also said that from all he has heard, you were a good guy and told me to just be up front and things will work out and that I wouldn't be around long enough for them to even notice me (grrrrrrrrrrr).
Thanks for responding, we BOTH appreciate it.

Ragnars Wolves
September 6th, 2010, 06:21 PM
It wasn't me as I stayed with Pythium.
My folks are over for dinner and my dad is standing right over my shoulder. He said that in a game that he had played in a year or so ago, some new guy kept sending in a pretender (hijacking the game) thinking that all you had to do to play was send in the pretender without being accepted. He says that it happened 3 times before the right guy could get his in and the game started.
I don't have any idea if this is the case, but I have been on some gamesites where you just log into the game when they start one to play without saying anything, the first 5 or 8 (or whatever) that log in play. If it isn't Morningstar can you just kick it out and have him load?

"Något gick fel" is swedish and means "something went wrong", and it's the general error alert of dom3.
Regarding the map. There is nothing wrong with your .tga file except that it has the wrong name. You need to rename it exactly: Shahrivar_Som.tga

OK, remembering that I am not the most astute person when it comes to computers, I THINK I know what a TGA file is (or at least have seen it when D/L maps), but I have never (in my short career on here) had to CHANGE anything.
So I ask this, Do I go in and change the TGA on the map I got from the link on the first page (remember, I have D/L like 4 maps called Shawriver so this is important to tell me exactly which map to change)?
If so, is this the 'balanced map with preset starting positions?
Sorry if I seem a little afraid to touch anything, but it has been my expieriance that I tend to change things for the worse.

In your \dominions3\maps\ folder should be a file called Shahrivar Som.tga (and also one or more files called Shahrivar Som.map or something like that, but you don't need to touch them.) Make a copy of that file, and change the name of the copy to Shahrivar_Som.tga

Hi,
i downloaded the maps: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com//atta...6&d=1214247273 ,
and renamed the file "Shahrivar Som.tga" to "Shahrivar_Som.tga"
and "Shahrivar Som.map" to "Shahrivar_Som.map".
You tried that?
Fantomen
September 7th, 2010, 07:25 PM
OK, I am home and went in and changed the tga file (ONLY) on the map file called Sharivar Som.tga TO Shariver_Som.tga and it did not work.
Now, remember I have 4 different Shahrivar maps (2 from sombre and another one called balanced along with the one I just changed).
It did not work, but I also did not change any other file except the tga file.
ALL those Shahrivar tga:s are EXACTLY the same file. All you need to do is change the file name of any one of them to EXACTLY: Shahrivar_Som.tga
My guess is you simply spelled it wrong, just like you did in the post above.
Any .map files are completely irrelevant, you don't even need to have one when playing MP, just the tga.
Ragnars Wolves
September 7th, 2010, 08:45 PM
I also saw I misspelled Shahrivar in one of my posts so that isn't an issue (but thanks for pointing that out, it sure could have been).
Here is what I have done and the results.
1. I used the map on the front page as the prototype. I cut and pasted it into the map section, extrated and then took all the files out and left them free standing in the map file (as I do all the others).
2. I changed that one file and added the underscore EXACTLY as indicated but no luck. In fact just to check something after I changed it I went back in and tried to start a new game using all of the the Sharivar maps and it would not come up with the message "can't find Shahrivar Som.tga". So changing it messed up the rest of the maps.
SO, it seems somewhere along the line I have a choice as my computer is NOT accepting the change (and I had my wife looking over my shoulder to make sure I didn't make an error). I can either keep screwing around doing the same thing and expecting different results (which according to Einstein would mean I am insane).
OR, I can delete ALL my Shahrivar maps that I have played SP on and start over with one map (which I don't know that I trust the map on the first page to be that map).
OR, I can withdraw as I honestly don't want to delete all the maps I have. It seems that everyone else is ok except me and I am doing (I promise you) EXACTLY what Fantoman said to do. Problem is, I KNOW he knows what to do and somewhere along the line I am just screwing it up but for the life of me (and my wife who read his directions also) I can't get it to work.
I need to get away from this for 1/2 hour before I throw it out a window.
I will check back for a concensus in a few minutes.
Sorry guys for the holdup:mad:

All you have to do is change the name of the tga file you downloaded to Shahrivar_Som.tga . I had the same problem you did but that fixed it immediately, and it solves the problem with all possible versions of the Shahrivar map. All these complicated steps you're taking seem unnecessary.

Speaking of extensions, I will be going on a field trip to a 'Dig' in South America for part of my Grad school work in Anthropology starting Weds Sept 15th and will return Monday Sept 20th.
Obviously, because of the location in the jungle, I will not be able to get internet time and would ask for an extension for that period. I understand we are moving right along, but this was an unexpected opportunity (to be asked to go) and I need to take advantage of it.
If you don't or can't wait, I will try and find a sub. However, I am like Groundworm....TERRIBLE starting position, hit with a unrest even on turn 1 and just hit agian (unrest is now 68) with another. I will not quit on this game but have no delusions of of being a contender, and will try to use this game to learn something (and maybe poking a stick in simeones eye before I die).
So stales actually maight work in my favor.

Ragnar- wrong game. This isn't the game where my starting province was struck by massive unrest.
I'll postpone the game when you need. Let me know when you're leaving, and I'll delay things for that period.

Greetings Gentlemen, how goes the war!! I just thought I would drop by as I saw Ragnar using my comp agian and had to remind him to use his own (as he took about 10 pounds of food out of my fridge and headed home...sigh).
Thanks Fantoman for helping these guys out, I wish I would have had that in my first game. I lasted all of 19 turns as Marverni...I was like a sheep in a wolves game. We have a $20 dollar bet that he won't make turn 20. Don't let me down guys, I'll NEVER hear the end of it!!!
Have a great game...

Groundworm is going to help me get a sub for the next week while I am gone (Thank You!!).
However we have a Nation that has staled 3 out of the six turns and you might want to put it on hold to find a permanent sub fot him as the guys around him will hew him up. Chelms id the Nation and I don't know if he has some problems or just doesn't understand how important making every turn is.

Sigh. I hadn't realized that camobeercan had been staling. That's very annoying. Any suggestions?
I've made a separate thread looking for a permanent sub for him, and a temporary sub for Ragnar. Thanks for the heads-up, Ragnar. I wonder why I wasn't getting messages about the stale turns? Has anyone else noticed this?
Should I delay the game until we get this sorted out?

Is it possible to skip the turn on Saturday? Otherwise I would be looking for a temporary sub (LA Caelum). Otherwise I would stale.

Keep in mind it´s harder to find a sub as a new player, as later on you can rely on people you subbed for to return old favors(well, given you´ve been a nice and helpful guy)

I set myself to AI this turn. I have only 3 provinces left, two of which are currently under siege. And I will be dominion killed in another turn or two anyway. My pretender is dead, as are most of my mages. I held out for as long as I could, and my ghost king stuck it in Ermor's craw several times. :)
Congratulations to Ermor on waging an extremely successful war against me. You attacked me very early on, which was clearly the right thing to do, and there was little I could do to counter you at any point. Well done.
This is, incidentally, also the last time I play in a game with late age Ermor. I wanted to see what they were like, and I sure did.
Good luck to the rest of you!

November 8th, 2010, 07:29 PM
Well, watching some of the fights between Ermor and Mictlan (which Mictlan came to well-prepared but still lost), I'm beginning to think that they are. Also, Ermor's strength lies in the early game, which is when you attacked me. I put up the best fight I could, but I really can't think of a way I could have stopped you that early. It leads me to think that if you start off next to Ermor, you're at a much greater disadvantage than if you started off next to any other nation. That, for me, isn't fun.
Others may disagree, of course, but that's my take on it.
Still, well-fought. And thank you for the compliment, Marmaduke. :)

Hi there!
I finally set my nation to AI as well: i have only 2 provinces with 2 forts both of them under siege. I have no god, no mage, no commander and only one military unit (hawk) left. So i think its rather justified to go AI.
And at least i have the joy to not to be the first player who passed out :P
But serious i had a great time playing this MP game, althougt i finally was utterly deafeated i think provided some shocking moments to my opponent.
Great game, i like it!

I just meant that if you are between Eermor and Mictlan there is no way you won't be Dom killed unless you jump on someone right out of the shoot.
I had 4 priests preaching and was still getting more red candles every turn. The cruddy part was I JUST attacked and that was when the dom kicked in and the suprise on my face HAD to be hilarious. There was no one there...nada, no flags, no troops, no nothing but an X where my prophet killed a couple of mage's.
And of course a big blank area. Back to the drawing board, but I have had it with Pythium. I guess I just don't understand the nation.

Mockingbird,
I am really curious how many slaves you are sacrificing each turn? 50? 100? An what your original Dominion value was.
I don't think revealing it would have any effect on the game.
mockingbird
March 13th, 2011, 10:03 PM
I started with a Dominion 10 pretender intending a dominion push strategy all along.
It was really the fact that Ermor was in the game that caused me to go in that direction.
I think I'm sacrificing about 100 slaves/turn at this point in the game, although it was much less than that through most of the rest of it.
