So, what does this spell do, exactly? Grant manikins regen? Can I script it to cast at the START of a battle? Or, does it work more like healing and I have to wait until they get injured?
Any help is appreciated!

I don't know actually. But is it that hard to test this? Just make a temp game and try it. Then come back here and post the results.
Then, make an account at the wiki and add the results there: http://dom3.servegame.com/wiki/
Also: Which spell is this? Is it a nation specific spell? Which age etc. Did you mean the quick roots spell?
This one: http://dom3.servegame.com/wiki/Quick_Roots
Edit: wow, a bit harsh. Sorry about that. Welcom to the forum!

To be fair, this one's a little harder to test. Assuming he actually means Regrowth not Quick Roots, it's a 4th level spell, which means you either have to mod it or play long enough to actually research it. And he's new.
On the other hand, it would have been nice to know the actual name of the spell.
And the answer is in the manual.

Quick roots is fairly worthless. It's the initial buff you get for your vines.

Quick Roots is pretty much useless. Unless it is used to speed up a manikin elephant; who doesn't love an unbreakable size6 trampler who has 24 AP? :)
The battle-field version Puppet Mastery however is excellent. Every Carrion Lord is able to cast Puppet Mastery on round one, and it just feels awesome when most of your faster manikin (the dog and horse types) make contact with the enemy on round one even when the enemy cleverly tries to stay back to not be touched by the sleep vines :)
