Hello all,

I would like to try a game with special victory condition: players who destroys the most nation (be the first to successfully storm a capitol, only be the first count except when the legitimate owner retake his capital) win the game.

Mods:
CBM 1.6
End Game 1.1

Maps: depends on number of players (12 will be perfect), wraparound prefered.
Era: LA
Indies: 8
HoF: 15
renaming on
Graphs off
Random nations (I will be the innocent hand. Trust me. Hin, hin, hin). LA Ermor and UW not playable.
Research: Hard.
Diplo: Bah! But not forbiden.
Turn frequency: 24h until turn 20-30, then 48h until turn 50, 72h afterward. 3 consecutives stales => IA.
Gentlemen game: a VP/capital (total VP for winning will be nb of capitals +1), players will inform the others in this thread when their capital fall and by who. And don't give up!

Players:
Galou: Caelum
Danakh: Mictlan
Odeoderok: Midgard
Domenje: Arco
Olive: Abyssia
Hoplosternum: Utgard....1PV
Hylobius: Pangea
Brazouck: Ulm
Awund: Man
Zegc-ben: Bogarus
Corinthian: Agartha

Marignon was destroyed by Utgard.

Ok,

To make the victory condition a little bit clearer:

When you are the first to take an ennemy capitol, you gain 1 point for the duration of the game even if you lose it, no one could claim the point for this capitol no more (you are the one who had destroy these decadents people, who had rape their kitten, ate their women, smashed, burned, stamped on their so called artworks and enjoyed living in their beautifuls ruined palaces and despise their grammar and spelling)
Exception in the very unlikely case of the rightful owner retake his capitol, you lose the point and it is available for a new real Scourge of Nations.
The game end when it is mathematicaly impossible to beat the leader in number of points.

+1

I'll also be keeping an eye on this game and would be really interested in hearing how it plays out. Since the victory conditions are a nice twist on all the regular ones, and could certainly lead to some interesting strategic choices in game.

("ok, the scalp of that nation has been claimed, so lets mothball that entire area now and move eveything towards the next scalp").

I am not surprise, viewing your location...
Anyway, I count 1 little week for recrutment and another week for testing, so if one of your game is almost finished, feel free to come here.

Never try a game like that yet. The purpose is to have a relatively quick and entertaining game. Boring turtling is not reeally discouraged but it will be more difficult to win as time passes.
Note that the end game could be a real mess (heavily supporting a discrowned pretendant to get him retake his capitol so you could take it and gain the VP)

Galou
November 11th, 2010, 09:51 AM
Corinthian, you got Agartha.

12 players, that's fine. Recrutment is over. I will create the game on the Llamaserver at the beginning of the week. Until then, try your pretenders and help me choose a map.
Galadia, Urraparrand and IcyUrraparand appeal me (but the two last clearly advantage Caelum/flying units) or maybe Alexander. If everybody don't mind I think I will choose Galadia.

zegc-ben
November 11th, 2010, 10:58 AM
I have never played on it but isn't Galadia a bit too big with 14.75 land provinces by player plus 40 water provinces ?

And another small question : what would you think of using the latest CBM (1.7 instead of 1.6) ?

Galou
November 11th, 2010, 12:51 PM
For CBM 1.7, I don't like the hammer made unique especially as we play in LA (less gems).
But I didn't try it yet, just looked at the changes.

I don't know what is the average provinces/player here but i used to play within 15-20 range and often wars begin before turn 20 (I played mostly with mad men, some of them are there: Danakh, Brazouck, Olive, Narushima but don't worry, we couldn't stand each other). 15 provinces are not too much IMHO.

zegc-ben
November 11th, 2010, 02:06 PM
I haven't played much MP yet but it seems that here the average provinces/player is lower (10-15 maybe ?) so I guess 15 is just the right number :).

I have no opinion about what version of cbm to take (in fact I even think my stategy will be better with 1.6), I just felt the question had to be asked.

Brazouck
November 11th, 2010, 02:15 PM
15-20 gold is good, especially with indep at 8 IMHO

Hoplosternum
November 11th, 2010, 05:11 PM
Galadia looks good although I have never actually played on it. I always prefer a bit of space at the start. Alexanders fine too but a lot larger. After being given Utgard I am obviously a bit biased on the CBM as 1.7 weakens my power a lot as it hurts my blood magic, blood sacrificing and thugs and gives nothing in return. So I'd rather we stayed at 1.6 :p But it doesn't matter that much to me either way.

Galou

That's it! CBM 1.6 and everybody rush Utgard.:ghug:

Well, in fact, I think it will be more difficult for me to make something with LA Caelum without forging some costly boosters and heavy use of gems.

You think you got it bad? I was playing around with Agatha on your settings yesterday. And let me tell you, it was harsh! Normally Agatha is a nation that bunkers up and hope it can survive until it has enough spells for its mages to become useful. That and summon things.
The problem is that under these settings research is hard and magic sites uncommon!

I'm still in though. I've got a Plan. I hope. ;)

Galou
November 12th, 2010, 05:55 PM
Well..err..(damned, what did we say usually in this sort of case?)...er...the research thing is err...err..thematic! That's it, thematic:angel: . Fortunately, you still have your bunker, there is hope (though good luck if you want to go for a walk.). And I am sure you are happy to find a way to loose with panache.:D

Seriously here is the 2nd reason why I randomized the nations: nobody could claim the Nation he consider perfectly adapted to the setting. The first one is that I didn't want to choose mine (and I bitterly regret ).

V1.1's file is in the 7th post.

Corinthian
November 21st, 2010, 08:01 AM
Oh. Thanks! The revised version seem to use the same .tga file as the original and that was probably why the previous version still worked.

I read something about a map in the seventh post earlier in the thread. But I assumed it to be the seventh post in this thread.

Narushima
December 7th, 2010, 05:38 PM
This is bull****.
Hotmail, after I had received hundreds of messages from llamaserver, decided to put the last two or three of these in the spam folder.
I stalled because of that, just because I didn't bother to check it.

Galou

Utgard :)

Hoplosternum
December 13th, 2010, 06:09 PM
And thanks to my first opponent Narushima :) It could have gone either way. At one point my main army was cut off behind enemy lines and had taken a mauling from a tough PD. My main income province had been lost to the Count and his spies had just started causing problems. Marignon then moved his larger blocking army to cover his capital and my army escaped. After that, even though he chased me all the way home, I always thought I should win as I was getting closer to my reinforcements and my recruitable Thugs give me an advantage in a low magic world compared to his mages.

Narushima
December 13th, 2010, 07:20 PM
Well, once I was right next to your home province, I realised you had a serious edge, military-wise, compared to me, so I didn't know what to do. I lost my focus there.
And the fact that I lost two turns didn't help considering the scope of the game.
But still, that was well played.

Galou
December 14th, 2010, 04:45 AM

Galou
December 17th, 2010, 04:12 PM
No stale if you asked for a delay, we are not so barbaric.

zegc-ben

Looking closer, it seems like Midgard and Pangaea are actually at war with each other. So the capitol might just change hands again soon.

Remember to tell here who takes each capitol, killing a player doesn't count.

Hoplosternum
January 12th, 2011, 03:31 PM
That was Pangaea. Arco ran out of provinces while trying to take it back. And Van had help taking out those last provinces. Maybe your scouting net isn't quite as good as you think ;)

So I think the point goes to Pan.

I didn't think this changes even if Van takes arcos capital now. Only Arco could have taken it back enabling someone else to claim the point? I thought that was the whole point of the scoring. Otherwise you can simply play in cautious/turtling sort of way and as long as your end game is good win by taking over a large portion of the world.

Danakh
January 12th, 2011, 06:53 PM
Yes, as arco is dead, the point is definitely for Pangaea !

Also, whats up with the random events in this game? I took a luck/turmoil combo in order to compensate for the lack of magic sites on this map. And what do I get? Troglodytes, and 100+ water gems! Once I got four bad events in a single turn! Well I guess I've gotten a bit of gold to, but still.

Ooops. I just connected to the boards and found out I had received some PMs for this game. Some in january... Unfortunately, the mail address in my profile was an ancient one I'm not using anymore, so I didn't receive any notification and didn't connect...

Apologies to those I may have been unwillingly ignoring. :(

Dear friends,
After a bloody war, the army of Caelum has been defeated by the clownest pretender of the world, I named Bob Dole.
Althought we will fight to the bitter end and to the last feather, our marvellous blessed High Peaks will be soon pollute by the many dejections of mushrooms smellings agarthians. That is very sad and dirty.

To help us a very little in our last stand, we want to sell some of our shiny treasures:

The Krupp bracers
1 Dwarven hammer
some skulls mentor (the best war advisors, you should test them)

Make an offer by MP. We accept gems (especially air, astral and death), money or a little villa far from Agartha.

Goulabelle of Caelum.

@Agartha
You should really clean up you mess before causing some more : I have Chelms that spoil my water all over !

@Chelms
Why don't you avenge yourself by attacking Agartha instead of my poor bloody nation? I have cause far less trouble to you than them !

Corinthian
March 25th, 2011, 10:14 AM
Wait? Chelms is still causing troubles? How did they escape my cage? Oh yea, Caelum. CAELUM!!!

Anyway, he is probably trying to reestablish his empire were he think I can not attack him. But that is untrue. I can in fact attack underwater provinces. I got those capabilities.

March 30th, 2011, 11:05 AM
I wasn't trying anything, those were just the only few provinces I was able to grap easily. If you can finish me already I will finally be out of this game. How many turns is it now already that I'm hanging on to 1 (well, now 3) provinces?

Corinthian
March 30th, 2011, 06:07 PM
Well my troops are limited in number and my enemies many. It is easier to prioritize sending them against Caelum who is causing real damage to me, than it is to send them against Man whom is turtling in his last castle and refuse to come out. If you would only be more of a pain in the arse to me I would put more priority on killing you.

Awund
March 30th, 2011, 06:37 PM
I don't have any serious troops anymore, so coming out of the castle means a certain dead. I'll hang in there a little longer until you get bored of it and find a way to crack it.

Did you people know? The best unit in the game is Agarthas Iron Corpse. They are great. They can even beat F9W9S9 blessed Jaguar warriors.

If you cast Darkness...and Will of the fates....and Army of Lead...And Mass Flight...and outnumber the enemy two to one.

And do you know what the best part is?

They are immune to master enslave!

The more you know.

This is the value of prudent scouting. I saw what your pretender did in Arco so I built my armies to resist it. I probed the forts before I attacked them so I new what kind of opposition I would face. Rock-bag-scissors etc.

Hahahaha! Thats great! But there is one little problem with that plan. Your pestilent religion is not all that popular with people outside of your capitol and without faith there can be no fire! I am happy holding of my attack on your capitol for some time. I can always entertain myself by taking the lands your turtling has left unprotected.

As for why the oak? Well fires of such intensity needs high quality wood to burn well y'know.:D

April 25th, 2011, 07:12 AM
Not me :) Abyssia is fairly close to taking my Capital but I can make it costly for him. And Abyssia won't be strong enough to stop Agartha - who is only 2 from his capital anyway - as are you Mictlan! But neither of you have put Abyssia under any pressure to save me :(

I really like the victory conditions of this game. And had Vanheim not managed to retake his capital I think Mictlan may well have won even if his capital was eventually taken by Agartha. Abyssia's capital was very close to Mictlan. So even with Agartha overrunning Mictlan's Empire he had a chance of seizing it and winning as I don't think there would have been enough capitals left, especially if Abyssia took mine. But with Vanheim taking back his capital that will make an extra capital available (and reduce Mictlan by one).

If no one can stop Agartha though I am all for stopping now. While I have enjoyed the game, my game was over dozens of turns ago. And my last turns are likely to take a long time. I have many mages and communions/sabbaths to script for my capital defense. It ceased being fun a long time ago - I am only playing because I don't want to quit and scew the game. But my attacker can't win the game either and neither Agartha or Mictlan have chosen to try and seize my (or Abyssia's) Capitals so it all seems like a pointless waste of time if we are all just waiting for an inevitable Agartha win.

Due to the victory conditions a big crusade vs Agartha won't work (and that's good - too many games feature a mass gank of the leader by a bunch of cautious turtlers and this game has shown that needn't be the way).

So I say congratulations to Agartha. And lets call this one a win for Corinthian :)

I have been scouting Abysia quite a bit and his power is quite formidable. They have massive flying demon armies and bloodhunters in almost every province. But yea, because of the game rules punishing turtling, it is highly improbable that he will be able to win. The only way for him to win would be to somehow transport armies to the other side of the map to take Caelum/Midgards capitols.

In fact I think he realize this himself. You notice that he is not trying to siege your capitol? He is just building forts. Why is that? Its because of Mictlan. If Mictlan takes either Midgard or Caelum, and Abyssia takes Utgård then Mictlan has won. There would not be enough victory points left for anyone to get more of them than Mictlan.

As for mictlan, I thought his tactics strange for a while. Why did he not pursue blood more throughly? But then I realized his plan was to take Midgard/Caelum before anyone could think to stop him and that he was sacrificing future power to win in the present. This plan failed, but only barely. Caelum sure got a nice show. And what ever is up with Mictlan stealing my shoes. Who'd steal a dead mans favorite shoes anyway.:(

We could ignore the victory conditions and I could have a showdown with Aby. I have certainly been planning and building for such a war. But the Late Game is the least fun part of dominions imho. And it is doubly boring if you dont have any chance of winning. I would understand if no one else wanted to sit around and watch from the sidelines.

Weather this game is over is up to you guys.

Unless Abyssia concede the game, there are no in-game reasons to stop it (at least this turn: Agartha and Aby coud get the VP for Caelum, Midgard, Utgard and Mictlan's capitols).

...even if I would like to launch a new game.

Arg, I (Abysia) regularly checked the thread on Cyber boards - which is plain dead - but not this one.

In fact I think he realize this himself. You notice that he is not trying to siege your capitol? He is just building forts. Why is that?

Skrattis killed a lot of my devils in the first battles, an as there are certainly a lot of them in Jotun's capitol, I thought domkill would spare a lot of my troops and be not so much longer. I guess something went wrong. ;)

...even if I would like to launch a new game.

Oops, one more miscalculation, didn't think there was still Caelum's capitol to take (sorry Galou).

There's no way I can prevent Agartha from taking Caelum or Mictlan in the next few turns... after that, I can still fight to get Agartha's Capitol and have a triple even. Honestly, I don't think I stand a chance, especially after Agartha's latest global. But if everyone is OK to keep playing, I'm ready for more turns. :)

In fact my first war against bogarus wasn' very succesfull; launched too early, it cost me most of my magic research for 10-15 turns.
I have turtled then a few and jump on Pangaea when i have the opportunity for my second victory point

Then a long war against Mitgard started ... I though that taking every fort and province and the way would only give the capitol to Agartha so i just take Arco's city and them send my forces directly on Mitgard to take it.
A send a second force on Caelum to clear the way with the idea of teleporting my main defending army on it ... but learned the hard way that oracle can teleport but not cast astral travel :D
Migard was taken at high cost, reinforcement was not available due to the very long distance so I could not keep it (Agartha succesfully prevent me from taking surrounding fort) and I wasn't succesfull in Caelum

I almost not doing blood as I was thinking it would take me too much time and gold to rush with my nice triple blessed army :)

Thank you all for a most entertaining game. I really liked the rules. Especially the random nations/hard research combo. Both forced me to consider new tactics I would not otherwise have considered.

I personally think that Mictlan is the strongest nation in the Late Age and I was half certain that they would win the game when they attacked both Midgård and Pan at he same time. The reason I believe this is because the one other time that I have won a major Dominions game I was playing Mictlan. And once I had my blood economy up running I was mostly untouchable. The fact that Danakh chose to sideline blood for a rush was the thing that did him in. It would have worked against Midgård, but the fact is that my best Tartarian champions and my Grue, all could fight an arbitrary number of jaguar warriors and win. If Mictlan would have had access to spells like "Life for a Life" or "Claws of Coctytus", things would have been much harder for me.

The hardest war for me was probably the one against Caelum. In fact, this war was almost the opposite of the one against Mictlan. Against Mictlan I fought a bigger empire by using troops and methods he was weak against. Against Caelum I fought a smaller nation who used troops and tactics that *I* was weak against. Agartha simply aren't built to fight against Caelum and the only reason I won, was that when the war started, I had twice the amount of provinces and forts that he had. In fact, if Caelum had only attacked me about 3 turns earlier, before I had time to fully neutralize and digest Man, Caelum would probably have won.

And Galou. I apologize. I could not find a way to lose gracefully as we agreed I would. :)
