Hi folks, it´s been a while since I did any sort of multiplayer Dominions. Let´s change that, shall we?

I propose this:

A newbie game on Llamaserver, Vanilla, LA, magic sites raised to 40, score graphs off. 8-12 players, map to be decided depending on the number of players (cast your vote as you sign up!) If you are interested, post here choosing a nation and suggesting a map. Also, please vote if Ermor, R´lyeh or both should be banned.

I´ll be playing Marignon, and vote for neither Ermor or R´lyeh to be banned.
__________________________________________________ _______________________________

Players:

1. Patolixo - Marignon
2. Xanatos - Ermor
3. nrasch - Patala
4. 13lackGu4rd - Pythium
5. Mule Warrior - Atlantis
6. Colonial - Midgard
7. Corinthian - Agartha
8. P3D - Mictlan
9. mscfish = C'tis
10. gotchaaa - T'ien Ch'i
11. nerozero - Jomon
12. Kojusoki - Utgard

Hi hi. :)

I'd like to join please as Patala, Reign of the Nagas.

I've played one other MP game so far. :)

Also, I am on the Dom3 IRC channel as LeafyBits.

Ermor and R'lyeh are fine, though will be pretty tough for newbies. I strongly recommend to not use Vanilla but rather use the very popular CBM mod, perhaps along with EGM that is starting to be used often as well.

anyway, I'll try LA Pythium.

It's been a looong time since I last played, time to get back.

I'll take Atlantis, and I vote for no ban on R'lyeh and Ermor.

I recommend updating the first post to include peoples names/nation choices

in the event I cannot have Ermor, I'd like to reserve Gath.

Oh ya, might be a good idea to include a short description as to WHY ermor and RLYEH would be banned, since many of us are new, they might be so new they do not realize the implications of ermor and rlyeh, its not that those races are harder to kill, its just that you have to design a different strategy to kill them, and generally you gain very little for taking over their lands.

Hello boys.

Midguard, Por Favor.

This will be my first ever PBeM. I play some other TBS multi-player, though

Thanks for the heads up, Xanatos, I had forgotten of the players list in the OP.

Like Xanatos said, Ermor and Rlyeh are sometimes banned because of their "Scorched earth" nature, ruining parts of the world for the other players, and the fact that they play very differently from standard nations. I personally think that having at least one of them in the game is part of the apocalyptic charm and sense of urgency of the late age, with the pretenders trying to ascend to godhood before the world is destroyed and ruined by Ermor, the Dreamlands or the Carrion Woods. But I digress.

Regarding CBM, I am actually not too keen on the idea. If everyone absolutely insists that it must be used and playing vanilla makes baby Jesus cry, I can consider it. But this being a newbie game and all, I think most are worried about actually GETTING to the endgame before worrying about having a more balanced endgame. And I like my Dwarven Hammers, haha.

Also, what are your thoughts regarding the map? I am thinking of something with around 120 land provinces. Any suggestions?

Thanks for setting the game up and letting me join. :)

Any particulars about sending our pretender files in n' whatnot?

I am ok with Vanilla, and recommend 15ish provinces per player.

Hi there. Signing up as Agathar.

I for one don't mind Ermor. Atlantis can hopefully keep Ry'leth occupied.

CBM doesn't change Dwarven Hammers at all ;) it does remove gem gens, which are pretty newbie unfriendly. also, being a newbie game, it should teach us all how to get into real multiplayer games, which are all played in CBM. still, I don't mind if we remain in Vanilla, just saying the better choice would be to use CBM and get used to it ASAP, cause all other games out there(in these forums that is) are played with CBM in mind.

I'm good w. or w.out CBM. Xanatos and I played a friendly game the other night, and CBM 1.7 seemed sort of icky. The last MP game I had was CBM 1.6, which I enjoyed.

Anyhow, my $0.02. :)

it should be noted that CBM 1.7 DOES make hammers unique artifacts. but 1.6 seems to be better.

Given how easy it proved to be setting up a balanced map for multiplayer (so long as you dont move those squirrely white pixels), even though I will not be playing in this game I'd be happy to set up a balanced map for your game. Pick your map, tell me how many players and I'll make it happen.

I find that balanced start positions really add a lot to enjoyment of the game. Of course, who starts where will be random - this won't be a 'scenario' with pre-determined starts.

Colonial

It made dwarven hammers unique? christ, that CBM guy is really going overboard on the artistic licence, isn't he? :S

Isn't there already a unique item that is a super version of the dwarven hammer, that provides a 50% bonus or some such?

Xanatos

I agree, many of CBM's changes were unneeded.

The creation of Gem-generators was a flaw that might have needed to be fixed, or at least made harder to do by making them more expensive(which is what I would have done) but we are at the point now where hes tweaked things that threw balance off on other things, and now hes tweaking those things etc, there are many who believe vanilla was more balanced.

Updated the player list with Corinthian and P3D. Since we have 8 players now, I am going to keep the recruiting stage open until saturday morning, and we will go with the number of players we have then, up to the maximum of 12.

Attackdrone, I will probably take up your offer of providing a map with balanced starts for us, I will send a PM after we have a final number of players, thanks!

I just want to point that I have nothing against CBM (1.6, I need some convincing on 1.7). It's just that I really need to fiddle with it some more in SP before using it on a MP game.

As for the map, I am thinking of using Urraparrand, are there any objections?

P3D
November 12th, 2010, 01:57 AM
If you want to use Urraparand, I suggest the modified one, with more straits connections - and extra money.

May I suggest a slower research speed?

Patolixo
November 13th, 2010, 06:33 PM
Great, we have 12 players now, which means we are closed to new recruits and are officially setting up the game! Hooray!

P3D, maybe we can use a slower speed, but what would be the advantages of that?

As for the map, we will be using Urraparrrand with Harbors, as per P3D's suggestion: http://dom3.servegame.com/wiki/Urraparrand_with_harbors

We will also use 150% money because of the map.

Colonial
November 13th, 2010, 08:29 PM
good stuff.

Wouldn't mind normal research myself. but if you want it slow we could try that. never have...

I've got a pretender waiting for this game to pop up on llamaserver...

Bit crowded and there are a lot of crap provinces - interesting game.

13lackGu4rd
November 13th, 2010, 09:13 PM
I strongly suggest normal research, anything else will just be too confusing for new players. not to mention that most games are played with normal research, only a handful few use hard or even very hard research. also, what's the verdict on vanilla vs CBM(with or without EDM)?

nerozero
November 14th, 2010, 05:57 AM
I haven't tried the newest version of CBM, and it seems a bit drastic. But CBM does seem to be the most commonly used around here, not that it matters that much too me. Of course, Jomon gains a lot from CBM, so I guess I'm biased ;)

Kojusoki
November 14th, 2010, 06:35 AM
slow research and crap probinces will be a good combination for some of the nations, leaving others far behind. For example Emor or Ryleh or my Utgard. I just think we should play at normal so it will be most fair

Some work came up last night that took up much of my time, but I'll be able to get the map balanced for a 12-player start position tonight after I get back from my appointments.

Criteria:

I: Each start must have four adjacent land provinces.

II: Each start must have at least 3 provinces between it and other starts (4 if possible, but this map will be slightly crowded).

III: I'll make sure none of the starts are next to all wasteland or swamp provinces, or something equally undesirable.

Colonial
November 14th, 2010, 03:53 PM
sounds good. I kind of pity my neighbours if it is too crowded, my initial expansion seems painfully strong.

We will be looking at a monday/tuesday start then, I take it?

Patolixo is defunt on another game I'm in. which might explain why this one is going slow.

I could set this game up at llamaserver if you want to email me the map, attackdrone. might keep the game from loosing momentum...

Hey, did we all decide if this is CBM or Vanilla?

And if it is CBM, is it 1.6?

Thanks!

Made a new thread, with editable title and first post:

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?p=763591#post763591

if everyone could post something when they've visited it that would be ideal, to tell us when we have fully migrated our thread.

now to upload my pretender...
