So here we go again. Bears are known to live in caves.

Rules:
Age: Early
Player amount: 16+3
Map: Asia Twist (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showpost.php?p=649938).
Hosting schedule: 27h ~20turns, 36/48/more after that as requested.
Magic sites 60
Victory condition: Hold 1/3 caps (7 caps for 16+3) for 3 consecutive turns. Must be verified by a trustworthy person. Or every single remaining player conceding to the victory of a single god.
Machiavellian diplomacy. Backstab whoever you want, but don't expect them to like it - though I'd like to request that whatever happens in this game, stays in this game.
HoF-15 & Renaming on, as is normal.

Mods: CBM1.71
- Fixed CBM1.71 due recent dom3 patch available http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?p=779560

Don't bother with exploits like bogus orders/scout blocking. This should be easy enough to grasp.

All other modifiers normal.

Newbies are free to join. You only learn by playing. Though I'd like to request that you don't quit after first lost battle. If everything is hopeless (ie. enemy sieging your cap or you have very limited troops and few provinces left), you may go AI. Just don't dissappear from the game. Don't be an idiot.

Following Juffos' example @ KingsOfDrama, postponements (and diplomacy to ME) should be conducted through IRC (and also well in advance. I might be sleeping when the game is hosting). To find out how to use IRC, see here (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=33869).

Postponements/rollbacks will probably not happen unless something extremely drastic happens. National holidays are a good example of when we'll be going on a pause for a couple of days. Another is if/when someone goes missing and we must either get a sub or turn a nation AI. I you have a reasonable request for a reasonable extension, do ask me.

Nations:

Yeah, hopefully QM can come up with something this week. We won't probably have full nation list until thanksgiving is over anyway.

That being said, one more land nation and two water nations to go.

But if it can help I'm ok to switch from YOMI to R'LYEH !

And maybe we can start with only two undewater nations ?

I'll sign up as Atlantis to round out the water nations.

I haven't played with the underwater mod yet but I have just downloaded it. Initial impression is that it would be handy but I will play with it a bit before saying whether I would prefer it.

Quitti
November 23rd, 2010, 10:24 AM
Very well. If arnob changes to R'lyeh, we'll only need one land nation. We'll likely wait until thanksgiving is over anyway to see if QM can come up with next version of CBM and to give the people over in US time to catch up with their families without having to worry if this game starts.

Water nations seem very indifferent about uwgim. If you guys want it, tell it to me before I host the game, which'll happen on sunday or so. Otherwise I'll take your answer as a no.

I'll try to pester QM to get us a new version coming before the weekend if possible :)

I also changed the topic to make this thread easier to find. I hope no-one got too confused about it.

What version of the map are we using? the version I have (asia twist w/ ports v1.2) seems to have a number of bugs including japan having not very good expansion options (no circle) and some caps being NEXT to one another.

I like asia twist because everyone is coming from all directions. I hate it for the same reason.

Zeldor
November 23rd, 2010, 01:26 PM
Well, we are waiting for 1.8 or staying with 1.6? Not sure about 1.7, quite unbalanced. I may switch to Yomi then too.

Quitti
November 23rd, 2010, 05:44 PM
I'd prefer 1.7 over 1.6, but we'll wait and see what happens at least until the weekend, as it's thanksgiving in US this thursday as far as I know and some people will probably be busy going around.

We'll be using asia twist with preset starting positions - I believe it's the one first in the list @ llamaserver. And that one would be this (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showpost.php?p=649938). If there's any serious bugs/something in that map I should know of, let me know. It's worked well before.

edit: QM told me on IRC that he won't be able to get a new cbm out in few weeks. Kind of shame. I'm tempted to go meddle with it myself but I don't want another cbm 1.4xx fiasco.

Re: Map

that's the version I have, I think.

Someone more map savvy will have to verify it, but I have a game from that map where two caps were adjacent (253<-> 266)

Also the japan position seemed difficult to start in.

I will reinstall it and see if I still have problems. But it says 1.2

edit: (file sizes and dates were identical) can someone look at the map for the cap problems I describe

i think 1.8 is not coming for another few weeks, so its either 1.7 or 1.6, i personally prefer 1.7 because it moved hammer to const 8, i'd like to see how thats gonna change the game balance, might shift some tier 1 powerhouses to tier 2 and vice verse :)

i would imaging its gonna be very hard for nations such as mictlan to maintain a full blood economy due to the unique dousing rod which effectively reduce their blood income by 40%, not that they are not overpowered before. Interesting how strategy will evolve for heavy blood dependent nations

Shadrach
November 24th, 2010, 02:12 AM
Rabelais, 253 is not a fixed start, so the game you were in must not have used them. This game will, so there shouldn't be any problems with adjacent capitals.

The main disadvantage of starting positions like the one in Japan is the lack of neighboring provinces, which means that capitals there would have access to fewer resources. The map description explains that those starting positions have been given resource generating sites in some of the neighbors they do have, which should make the starting positions quite balanced.

So, we'll be using CBM1.7. If anyone wants to consider a mod nation, I can check them out and if they're not dwarf-overpowered, I can possibly allow them, as long as they do not conflict with CBM.

As its my first multiplayer game can I ask a couple of questions.

1) Does the server host every 27 hours or when everyone gets their turn files in?

2) Are there any restrictions on who you contact diplomatically i.e. do you have to have met them in game first?

Good luck every one!

1.If the admin enable "quick host" which is regularly, the server will host at once when it receive the last one's turn file.
But if someone don't send his turn file in time(now ,it's 27h),the server will host 27h after last hosting.
2.Look at this on the first page
"Machiavellian diplomacy. Backstab whoever you want, but don't expect them to like it - though I'd like to request that whatever happens in this game, stays in this game."
So,just do anything you want.

You don't have to have met someone in the game in order to message them, no. I guess you have to imagine that all the pretenders can detect and contact each other by some kind of crystal ball system.

Calahan
December 1st, 2010, 12:26 PM
You don't have to have met someone in the game in order to message them, no.
Hhhhmmmm, personally I wouldn't be too quick off the mark saying this (that "making contact before meeting in-game" is ok) is the accepted norm for games.

Early on in one of the Newbie games I am currently running, one of the players wasn't too happy about two of his neighbours chatting before they had met in-game, since as the game developed, these two players were also the same two neighbours who ended up rushing him. I looked into the complaint at the time, and concluded the original contact was more-or-less harmless. But at the same time I could certainly understand the player who got rushed feeling a bit aggrieved, as it appeared to him his two neighbour agreed to rush him just a few turns after the game had started, and well before they even got close to having in-game borders, or finding out where each other was on the map. Indeed, the rushed player hadn't even met one of his would-be rushers in-game at the time, which didn't help matters, as it only aided his opinion that one of his rushers might only have known about his cap location from the other rusher he had contact with pre-meeting in-game.

So again personally, in future newbie games I run I will likely have a rule that contact between players inside the first 15 turns must be limited to those you have in-game borders with, as I want to avoid unwanted drama in my newbie games. (although this particular game isn't a newbie game of course. So you can likely expect more 'advanced' settings on all options. But just thought I'd point out that I don't think llamabeast's quote should be automatically accepted as the standard norm on the "making contact before meeting in-game" issue for all games)

Quitti
December 1st, 2010, 07:55 PM
While Calahan has a point there, this game does not limit people from communicating with each other, no matter who the players are, have they met, and so on. Let the information flow freely!

Hiya all.Just a short note, it's a much longer story, but my toddler just got home so I'll have to be brief.

I've been ambivalent about this game for some time, mostly because Yomi (Zeldor) has spent the entire game trying to shake me down for territory in exchange for "peace". By which he meant pay him off not to dogpile me after Ulm declared war. Really just been a tiresome jerk about it. Constant nagging, threatening and self-justification. The friendly extorter who just can't bring himself to behave less unreasonably because of "the graphs". Really makes me dread his every diplo. He's also been in violation of our nominal NAP for almost the entire game. So I'm attacking him. I will probably lose because I've left it too long. But I encourage everyone else to attack him too, because he is an annoying jerk.

I gave Ulm a very generous peace treaty because he was very forthright in his reasons for declaring war, and admitted he was losing. Also I figured demonstration of generosity of spirit would piss Yomi off.

Agartha is attacking me as well (likely at Yomi's instigation) but I bear him no ill will beyond that due a noncommunicative neighbor who invades you. He won't get far.

Oh and since Yomi has been so concerned with graphs look at the research and castle stats. I will be tying up his army for the foreseeable. I encourage everyone to help prevent his magery/research lead from becoming insurmountable. Also he is a jerk, I assume not just to me. I'm not that special. But I'm enjoying the game more now that my only goal is to kill Yomi.

Hoping the rest of you are having fun too.

Nice attempt at doing some propaganda there. Quite poor though.

I guess everyone should know that TC is played by unhonourable leadership that does not respect NAPs. NAP that you signed and now you violated.

It's clear who is game leader. Ulm saw it too - and he was the only one brave enough to face you. Well, it's time for others to see it. Game leader that does not respect NAPs, insults players [ha, ha, let's laugh at ghoul31 and insult him - great diplomacy] and feels that he can do everything. Time to check it.

So if anyone wants to take down game leader - please contact me. If you have signed NAP with him join too - he does not respect them, so you will be next on his list. Let's fight arrogance and childish behavior. Let's kill TC.

But perhaps that's why you play the game, for the opportunity of exploitation and the mind****.

Plus you pull the classic Rovian shtick of throwing the exact same accusation back at the person who criticizes you. This isn't your first game. People have seen you pull this crap innumerable times before. I told you privately and now I'm saying publicly, that I would rather go down in flames than put up with this.

And that's the thing about Rove (and implicitly you?) everyone knows he lies, everyone knows he's a jerk and no one likes him or thinks he's an honorable person, even among those who agree with him politically.

Anyway if Ulm, or anyone wants to chime in about our respective characterizations they certainly may. The more light on this the better as far as I'm concerned.

And for the record, I didn't insult Agartha. I just said I didnt think his invasion would work out as well as he hoped.

I have no hopes for my invasion other than making someone else benefits from my throwing my chaff hordes against your flaming arrow bakemonos.

There will be other games. Let's hope you act differently in the next one.

See, you should really learn how to talk to people. We could have civilised chat, but you decided to pick a language like here, in last message. Hard to come to any agreement.

Sure, I wanted to make a deal. Deal good for me. I offered reasonable price. You had your own opinion. I did not say you are a jerk, because you don't to agree to my offer. I simply stated the facts. But it looks like my approach with telling the truth did not work. I doubt any would work - you are just too much focused on yourself.

So instead of organising smth with my neighbours, or helping someone fight me, or just trying to win the game you decided that the best solution is to violate NAP and attack me like that? And now you are saying you are the one with better approach to MP?

rabelais
January 28th, 2011, 04:39 PM
We have had a very very very long civilized chat. I even made you several offers to resolve your issues with my having multipath flying site searchers and having expanded in a straight line. This despite your ridiculous shakedown/harassment.

You have been in violation of our NAP for over 10 turns. You took 116 while the NAP was in effect. Abysia and others can verify this. My taking back the province you illegally stole does not constitute *my* violating the NAP.

Your offer was extortion.

You never simply state facts. You are the one who is cavalier about NAP's This is well known in the community. In any case you seem to think our NAP was ending this turn, even though I never received your cancellation notice.

But I will stipulate to that, particularly since it means I am free to actually take your territory, as opposed to taking mine back.

116 was always mine - and you confirmed that long time ago. So you have violated NAP and took my territory.

So let's see how people in the game feel about having superpower that does not respect any agreements and that cannot be trusted. You can tell a lot, but I have a reputation of always keeping my word and never breaking NAPs. Too bad some people have lower standards...

This is a game.So show your power in the battlefield.
Sign an NAP treaty and then extort the other when they are attacked is unhonorable.(although it is a strategy, especilally in this game within Machiavellian diplomacy)

Everything's allowed in this game (Except the extreme cheesy tactics like scout blocking and crap like that). I do not border either of Yomi or TC so I will not opportunize this moment.

Oh and llamaserver seems to have become upset. Maybe it's lover left it or something. Anyway, the game's due to host 10.40pm on TUESDAY now, even though the game page does not show it. At least that's what I've postponed it to (+36h). This is to give llama some time to fix his server - which is awesome work. If you got a few extra bucks/euros, donate them to him to help the incentive to keep the server up :)

Well, just much less time and much less consistent - preventing me from playing on the level that's expected from me. Too bad, I really like Yomi's potential with research like that :)

Zeldor, just stop with the constant lying and deception. It's tedious. If you wish to discuss my conduct, do it with me. I wasn't infuriated you refused my terms. I was infuriated you spent the whole game extorting me while having poached one of my provinces ... all while playing the victim.

I'm not suggesting your behavior was outside the scope of "Machiavellian Diplomacy" just that it was asinine and had sufficiently compromised my pleasure in the game that to restore it I had to focus exclusively on killing you. I bet that happens to you a lot.

Hi guys, I'll be going away tomorrow on a skiing trip, and won't be back until late sunday. I'll be able to send in the next turn, but after that I'll need an extension.

Seems sort of stupid to postpone the game just because of me, since I'm in no position to win anything, but I'll leave that up to you guys, if you want to put me AI or give me an extension then either will be just fine with me. I'd obviously prefer to play it out though.

nerozero, I don't think you should go AI or have to stale. At least you are getting your turns in on time, and have asked for an extension.

It would be nice to actually see the turn host however, what's up with the consecutive bumps to the timer? Do we need subs for R'lyeh, Sauro, and Atlantis because of multiple stales? I have not moved more aggressively because I don't like to take unfair advantage of this sort of thing, but my benevolence has limits. :D

Sauro wanted an extension, and it didn't seem like everyone wanted to submit their turn in time either. I'm giving them slightly more time to get the turns in. If nothing shows up, I'll ask someone to set people AI or sub for them.

nerozero: I'll try to make sure the game doesn't host more than once while you're gone. It'd still be nice to keep the game going. Depends a bit on how active those semi-away players seem to be.

I am sort of stepping in for Atlantis because it looks like a heroic last stand. I reserve the right to go AI at any time.

If anyone has diplomatic agreements with Atlantis, please let me know.

I assume Rlyeh and Oceania are both at war with me? If not, or if the owner of one of those powers would like to make peace, contact me.

Note that since this is a heroic last stand, i will try to hurt anyone who takes offensive action against my territories or my peoples. The former atlantis obviously had no clue what he was doing, but that doesn't leave me totally without teeth.

Quitti
April 14th, 2011, 02:59 AM
While I'm generally against house rules of indeterminate kind, I'll agree to that in this case.

If you cast infernal disease, to make the play fairer, be a gentleman and give an AI player 7 blood slaves. Sauromatia would work in this case at least. 7 is the intended cost in 1.7x CBM.

I cannot force this, and I will not check this. But it'd be fair play, as far as anything in dom3 can be considered fair play.

Your banelord with winged shoes always attack our commanders no matter where they are,on the front or on the rearmost,
even we set many troops on the battlefied and block the flying path. But your banelord could still attack the commanders.
Even when our commander cast phoniex pyre first, and then be attack by your banelord and blink to another position, between the commander and your banelord, there are still many troops, but your banelord with winged shoes still attack the commanders.

These things last out for many turns.

DO WE EVER HAVE SIGNED ANY NAP TREATY?(I have check the messages carefully, there is no words about it)

You libeled us lacking of honor.OK,Let me tell you what is the trueth. We have engaged with Yomi from long long ago, almost in the 10th Turn.Someday Yomi asked us for peace and attack sauro together.Abysia accepted yomi's suggetion and stop attacking with yomi.It keeps a long time until some turns ago(maybe 2 or 3 turns)

When we attack ctis, mic attack us,of course,we must fight back. But Yomi make it pretence, and declare war upon us.

Should we still keep your that "NAP"?How?We even don't kno how many turns of the NAP treay.

Sorry for that too many word of boring.
Just begin the war,Yomi!

mscfish, I see no point in continuing this dicussion other than to set the record straight.

You may recall that we traded a few "in game" messages in the begining when I had a SC or two sitting on top of your cap and a few other provinces. My offer, as I recall it, was to withdraw from your lands if you would do the same, and to help you against Sauro if you chose to invade him in exchange for a NAP. Your response was: "we agree to your proposal", or words to that effect. :)

If you do not have the same recollection, it's cool, as you said we're at war now. But I assure you that if I did not believe we had a NAP my "announcemnet" that I was helping Mictlan against you would have been a multi-pronged assault against your core lands rather than a post in the game thread. ;)

To those of you who may be entertaining a notion of watching Aby and Yomi weaken each other for a bit before pouching on one or both of us, you should strike Aby sooner, rather than later.

Unlike C'tis, who has fought valiantly against Aby alone for a very long time, and my attempt at a bit of good-natured role play aside, Aby is too strong for me. So, either suck it up and step up and fight him now, or declare him the victor. It will not take him long to roll me up.

Did you check your message carefully?

We don't want to make peace with ULM,but we need to tell everyone what is the truth that the users of ULM is a lier. And even at this moment,he is still lying.

Lolomo,CAREFULLY Check your two message sent in 12-14-2010.

Abysia don't care how many ones are there in the dogpile ,but we really look down on the behavior of ULM,and we will revange.

i think mscfish is finding out the hard way why most vets either dont sign NAP's or dont put much trust in them. it is just really dumb to assume someone will be nice to you and give you some kind of bull**** warning before they attack. and there is too much drama anyways

Aethyr
July 10th, 2011, 02:40 AM
NAPs have their place. How much trust one places in them (or should place in them) will always be situational, and really depends on the players involved. Drama? Definately. :)

LoloMo
July 10th, 2011, 07:30 AM
Abysia,

We've checked again, and true enough we did sign a NAP 7 months ago. Since then, we've never had any other communication, and that treaty was tucked 5 pages away.

You have to pardon our Shaman record keeper. He really doesn't like his job and instead of digging through hundreds of leather scrolls in his dark hut, he decided to oil and polish his antler headpiece instead. He has been replaced by his nephew, who hopefully will be more diligent.

So you have earned reprieve from the tiny but surprisingly terrible and feared nation of Ulm for this and the next turn. Our condolences to the dozen or so infantries we chased away. We will remove our troop from the one Abysian fort we have under siege. The silly metal head has an appointment with his optometrist anyway. We resume full scale unilateral devastating invasion in 2 turns. Unless of course you decided to just get on with the business of exacting vengeance on us immediately.

. it is just really dumb to assume someone will be nice to you and give you some kind of bull**** warning before they attack

Especially in the endgame.

On Other News, the Lizards, that's us, killed 10/11 Aby SCs (and 30 devils or so) on top of our cap without breaking a sweat last turn. Well, there was some sweating, but it froze off quickly in the chill auras. We think one Tartarian managed to escape, but for my quick count, the rest of the pile was worth couple of hundred blood slaves and a total of 735 gems worth of gear and SC chassises. I'm now in possession of some of that gear of course, maybe 200 gems worth of. Can't be arsed to count.

Feel free to exact your quick justice on Abysia. He still does have tons of SCs. I wonder where he gets all those gems - has someone been feeding him? Bad choice. And there's a pile of 200-ish storm demons around too.

So, shall you continue to play then or should we call it a game without a winner, or just set Aby to AI and, well, bugger off to wherever people want to. I'm pretty much done for and don't really care myself, except that if people want to finish it, I'll still be admining it unless someone else wants to take it over which I doubt. I've postponed the turn by 48h again just in case.

Aethyr

As you said, the larger question is what do you folks want to do?

LoloMo
July 21st, 2011, 11:19 PM
I"m ok with the new admin. I vote to play on. At the worst we can set Aby to AI, but we should wait at least a week more for a sub to materialize since Aby is the most powerful nation right now.

Quitti
July 23rd, 2011, 06:42 AM
I've once again postponed the turn by 48h, It's on due for wednesday now.

Setting aby AI is about the same as just calling the game. There'd be no point in it after that - the leading (province/gem -wise) nation set to AI pretty much kills the point. That's my opinion.

I'll PM the admin password to Aethyr in case I don't hear any complaints this weekend - It'll be easier to me, I don't really have much to play for in this game. I'll still be holding my cap for a while, but after that I'm toast, as if Abysia can't get it, then Ulm probably will.

I've added 72 hours to the timer to give it one last try to find a sub. If we can't find one in that time we might have to call the game.

I tell you what, since I'm down to one game at the moment, I can take over Abysia if you still need or want someone.

But I have a big project going through the weekend, so I wouldn't be able to do a turn until early next week.

So let me know if a sub is still wanted (if people are losing or have already lost interest, I probably shouldn't bother), and if waiting another 5-6 days to get going again is OK :)

LoloMo

Hopefully the TC and Marverni stales were incidental and not an indication of future intent? Guys, what can you tell us?

I know the TC player does not (apparently) frequent this forum much, but can be reached on IRC (which I do not frequent), perhaps someone can inquire with him?

@ TC, I also sent you an in game message last turn. Our deal re: 116 is hereby revoked as it was never fully commsumated on your part. Yomi shall now hold this province against the firery hordes of Abysia!

I'm the long gone Oceania player of this game (can't believe I'm still in this). Sorry about the stalling on my part, but I was unfortunately injured in that horrible explosion that happened in Oslo, Norway this summer (I'm ok now by the way). So I've had my mind elsewhere to be honest, and didn't even think about this until today. I guess I might as well be set to AI at this point, can't imagine that there's much left.

Time to specify the VC - from Quitti's initial post:

"Hold 1/3 caps (7 caps for 16+3) for 3 consecutive turns"

I've never been exactly clear on what exactly defines 'holding a cap' in these self regulated VC games. I presume it at least means being in control of (and not just besieging) the capitol's fortress, if there is one. Or does just controlling the province fulfill the VC (no need to actually storm the fortress - although that just seems too easy)?

If control of the capitol's fortress is necessary, is it also necessary to control the province as well? Or is holding the fort alone enough to count as control?

In games with established VP conditions (meaning VP locations built into the map), I'm pretty sure just controlling the cap fortress is enough to claim the VP.

Just wondering, cause, well, it's gettin' about that time... ;)

More specifically, holding the fort is *necessary* and *sufficient* to control the capital. The province itself doesn't matter for purposes of winning.

OK, I've got the password from Aethyr (sorry you have to go, and good luck with your computer issues!), and have added 24 hours to the clock, and can add more time if/as necessary.

Is it necessary? Abysia now controls 7 caps (its own, Arco, Marverni, Marignon, C'tis, Kailasa, and Hinnom). Ulm has me under siege at C'tis' old cap, but I'm fairly confident I can beat off any attempt to storm the place. I'd be interested to run one more turn just to find out though :)

Other than that, I'm fortifying all those caps, I'm still cranking out tarts and other SCs (Astral Corruption is a b*%#h, but Storm Demons make excellent bodyguards against Lesser and regular Horrors), I've got the Chalice, and 3 S5+ commanders able to wish it back if necessary. And now I've got Arcane Nexus up, just in case.

So what do folks think about continuing or calling it?
