Compatibility with Windows 7

Hi,

I've read some older threads on the subject yet now that I'm about to install Windows 7 I'd like to ask whether there are known standing issues inhibiting dominions from running correctly?

Hi WL,
I'm using the same copy of Dom3 from 2 XPs and Win7. As long as you DON'T install dom3 into Program Files of WIn7 where it thinks it can do whatever it wants, everything is fine. Sometimes win7 enters some sort of compatibility mode when I Alt-Tab often, but it ends when I exit dom.

no problems on my w7 netbook. though it isnt installed to program files.

generally you never want to install games to program files in vista or w7... windows gets fussy if programs change anything in program files, but most older games use their own directory for at least some stuff. AFAIK dominions doesn't use user directories at all so its just going to run into problems.

DON'T DO WHAT I DID. I copied the entire folder into a dom3 folder under program files. I did my turn. Sent in the turn file. When game hosted, I had turned in the old undone turn! Apparently the updated 2h file was hidden in a top secret location and not in the savegame folder!

So the advise was to copy and paste the whole dom3 directory into a folder under the Documents folder, and not to use the Program Files Folder at all.

Best advice I've found with regards installing programs on Windows 7 is to imagine you went away for the weekend, and while you were away you let your missis organise and store all of your belongings. Meaning that when you got back your missis could find absolutely anything you might want within seconds, but that you'd never manage to find it yourself if you looked for a thousand lifetimes.

So in short, my user guide for Windows 7 would be if you want to know where things are, and you want things to stay where you put them, then don't ever allow anything to get installed in the Program Files folder unless you have no choice.

I just copied and pasted the Dominions folder over on all 4 of my win 7 systems. I haven't had a problem with any of them.

Sounds like it :). For reference, I've copied mine to c:\dominions , c:\program files (x86)\ and to a secondary drive d:\games\ with no problems on 32 bit and 64 bit win7 systems.

its not actually a problem with w7 its a design philosophy really. the theory is that all user data should be in user folders rather than the program folders. the biggest advantage of this is easy of backup and compartmentalization. there are also some security advantages. but of course any program designed or written that modifies the program folder instead just doesnt work with this.

In my experience it's not a problem.

Just be aware that your mods, save data, and config files are stored in a separate location from the game files - usually something like C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Progr am Files (x86)\dominions3. The AppData folder will usually be hidden by default but you can type in the path to access it or just create a shortcut if you expect to be browsing to that folder often.

I recently installed windows 7 ultimate in my desktop and i´m having problesm with dom3.... i use dom3 in a flashdrive and it works normally in my winXP netbook, but when i try to play it on the recently installed win7 of my desktop all places where you have letters (menus, etc.) appear garbled with random letters.... any idea in how to solve it? i imagine it is something to do with compability with win7 as it works normally in my winxp netbook....

I run Windows 7 on both of my computers and I play dom3 on both of them. On my laptop, though, it's really weird: Everything except multiplayer games and mods is in program files, while those two things are under User/AppFiles/VirtualStore...It gets annoying having to navigate there each time I want to upload or save a multiplayer file or put in a mod, but other than that everything works fine.

solved the issue: forgot to update the graphics driver... i just left the one win7 autodetects... downloaded the most recent one from nvidia and now the problem is solved....
