Hey, all. This will be my second MP game; I'm currently involved in one that is just reaching turn 40, and it's been great fun (although I'm getting destroyed lol) except for one thing... tons of stale turns. One of our water players only took a couple of turns before staling like mad, and by the time we picked up on it, he had given the other water kingdom a walk in the park. There have been other problems with staling, so I'm trying to establish a game for noobies that gets around the main problem for such games, which is people who are trying the game out, don't like it or don't have the time for it, and just give up without having the decency to let the administrator know.

Therefor, I have two criteria for who is allowed to play this one... first, you have to be a noobie, with no more than five MP games played. Since I will be asked, I'll say it now; I'M NOT BUDGING ON THIS ONE LOL... sorry, but the learning curve on this game allows players with more than that to slaughter those with less skills. The second criteria is that you must have a record of getting at least 30 turns into a game without staling. So this won't be a game for first-timers. I am asking for verification of your non-staling status through one of the following methods: preferably, an administrator from one of your games can post (or email me) that you have indeed not been a flake. The other method is to have two players from one of those games "vouch" for you. EDIT--3rd (and probably easiest method... thanks to P3D for pointing this out) way is to just give me a link to a game on llamaserver, and I can check your staling status.

Here's the rest of the details:

Middle Age.

"Cradle of Dominions" map.

Turns start at 24 hours and will be extended liberally as needed.

Number of player: 10.

Non-standard settings: Score graphs disabled, 15 Hall-of-Fame, re-naming allowed.

EDIT: No mods... it's vanilla.

Diplomacy is "Word of Honor". By this, I just mean that you keep your agreements. You're normally free to invade someone without notice, but if you have three-turn non-aggression pact with someone, you're not.

Water races are only ok if there are two players playing them.

Hosting will be done via llamaserver. I'm not creating the game there yet, because if I do, there will be random people who sign up without meeting the criteria, and it's a pain in the butt to get rid of them. Once we have enough people, I'll create the game.

One other thing... this is probably an impossible thing to do, but it would be great if all of the players were good sports. Win-at-all-costs people aren't fun to play with, as they tend to explode when someone puts one over on them lol.

I'll be playing Abysia, so here's the list:

1. earwicker7--Abysia
2. Saros--Vanheim
3. Nosantee--Arcoscephale
4. Korwin--Bandar Log
5. Gweldorf--Marignon
6. adder83--Tien Chi
7. Sopita--Pythium--DEAD
8. Sephorin--Ashdod
9. jimbojones1971--Ermor
10. Numahr--Agartha--DEATH BY AI

Doesn't cradle of dominions only work with EA or is there a MA version of the map? Also is it vanilla?
[e]Oops nevermind I was thinking of the dawn of dominions map.
Ill take vanheim =)

You can check the staling data on llamaserver for any game. It is in the admin menu, but requires no pwd

Yes, it's vanilla.

Do you have someone who can vouch for you not staling? (or a link to a llamaserver game... see edit I'm about ready to make to the initial post). Sorry to be a Nazi about it, but I think it will really help with the game in the long run :)

You could also ask Valerius (game admin) if you want i'm sure he could vouch for me.

I'll definitely vouch for Saros. Crucible went 68 turns with a 30 hour hosting interval and he didn't stale once.

Dominion of the Den - Sauroatia (active)
Last Rites - Ermor (active)
Rock the Cradle - as Vanheim (dead)
Rock the Cradle - subbing Shinuyama (not yet dead)
Dominons of Denizens - Vanheim (active)
MonkeyParadise - subbing Abysia (active)

If we dont count the subbing, I'm at 4 games.
But would I be able/ready for another game?
(No stall in any game to date)

Before I need to search my soul for an answer,
how do you count Earwicker7?

Korwin, it hurts me to say this, because you are an AWESOME guy to play with, but I really want to keep it at three and under. If I say ok to four, then the next guy will want me to say ok to five, and before you know it, Gandalf Parker will be eating all of the players for breakfast lol.

I'll make you a deal... if we have problems finding enough players, I'll get back to you.

After my abmysal starting position in Rock the Cradle as Vanheim (I started in the middle of wastelands), I would like to say:

There is an Cradle-version with fixed starts on llamaserver.
(Hmm, if I had seen that, when I created the Rock the Cradle game on llamaserver...)
Looking further, there is more than one version with fixed starts allready on llamaserver.

Edit:
Another thing, if there are considerations of upping the site frequency I would not be unhappy and would loudly yell: Yeah! Uh I mean *imagine mad and enthusiastic monkey yelling*

How do the fixed starts work? I would have killed to have been in the wasteland, but on the other hand, some people might have seen that as an unfair advantage if Abyssia were to always start in favorable terrain.

I want to keep site frequency where it is... otherwise rainbow mages will have an unfair advantage.

Not trying to be overly difficult, but my current game ("Rock the Cradle") just had a person drop out today, so I'm a little paranoid right now ;)

In total it should be around 40 turns. I will PM some of the other player and hope they answer back.

A fact: I subb(ed/ing) two games. Normally subbed nations are left because their situation is bad...bad enough for somebody to leave it. So i m not leaving when times are hard.

Hi,
I am not sure if I qualify or not, but I am interested. I played 1 game in 2008 (Agouti) on llamaserver, but it took a long time and my wife and I had a baby, so haven't played a game since.
But the baby situation is more under control, and I would like to get back into this game. I think Agouti went about 75 turns before it was decided that it would be a 3 or 4 way draw, I can't recall.
Anyways, if accepted, I would like to be Mictlan.

No problem. All I vaguely remember was that I got into a war with Mictlan/Argatha, and as I was beating Argatha, Mictlan was killing someone else, and then once things were just about to get good, Mictlan went sim along with someone else, and everyone basically thought Niefel and TC were going to win.

It was on the 8 gates map.

So i understand the goal of trying to get everyone on the same page for being punctual.

If you are not able to fill your spots let me know. I'd like to get into multiplayer games but have only done SP so far.

I understand that you are looking for a track record but I just wanted to put my name out there in case you were not able to fill the other 2 spots.

I'm not flaky and will promise to take all of my turns as scheduled, but I also know that words on the internet don't mean much.

Thanks

I'm really wary about mods... is the game really that out of whack, or are the people modding it trying to make sure that their favorite nations don't lose as often? That's not an accusation, but a genuine question... I'm way too new to know the answer.

How drastic are the changes? I get your point about the exploits, but I think the other side is that maybe the changes are too much for someone who is a newbie to handle; in other words, is Abyssia going to play so differently that I might as well forget my MP and SP experience with them?

Well, it's something to think about... what does everyone else think? Either way, it would be great to have you, your record is stellar. Let me know :)

Saros
January 6th, 2011, 03:09 AM
Well CBM seems more popular than the base game. With the base game its essentially a rush to collect as many gem generators as possible (clams being the most popular) and then heading straight for a tartarian factory ASAP.
CBM has been around for ages and has almost become the standard mod for many many games, nearly all use it in some form or another.
All my MP games have been with CBM 1.6 and/or Endgame diversity mod (EDM) and I have to say that compared to the vanilla game they really do add quite a lot, more viable strategies and less micromanagement as well as a fair amount of balancing out all the really ridiculous stuff. A big change is making the gem generators unique. Several nations are rebalanced true but not usually major changes, lots of it seems to be focused on making weaker nations viable choices rather than making any particularly powerful.
CBM 1.7 is not what I would reccomend at this point as it is a major departure from what most people would expect. -no hammers and other weird things.

EDM is really good as well for giving alternatives for tartarians, they're still good but not the only option anymore. Its not a major mod it just adds a few lategame summons to give non astral or death nations a chance to get some SC's. It seems really well balanced to me.

So yeah CBM 1.6 and possibly EDM 1.1 would be mods I would support being used.
CBM 1.6 (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=43949)
EDM (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=45056)

Sephorin

I think Saros hit it right on the nose. There's certainly nothing wrong with vanilla, but from what I've seen, it tends to point every single player in the same direction for the endgame. There is also a large amount of micro management resulting from massing gem generators. CBM 1.7 would be what I recommend. The endgame diversity mod (EDM) is included in that.

Of course, CBM 1.6 plus EDM would work also. And so would vanilla! Ultimately, the choice is yours, earwicker. I guess the only thing I would add is: I have yet to see a game offered here (newbie or otherwise) that does not use CBM. But then I haven't been around very long.

I think I would enjoy playing in the game no matter what you choose. But the choice of mods (or no mods) would influence my nation pick and pretender design. (Note that you need to have the mods loaded before building your pretender because they affect the cost and composition of some of them.)

Here's the link for CBM 1.7 (which includes the EDM):

If we changed to CBM I would NOT play Bandar Log.
Not shure if I would play at all.

I would need time to read up on the changes CBM did do.
(Besides no GemGens, no DwarfenHammers)

EDM allone I would not mind, since (I think) there are extra units in this mod, but no changes to existing ones.

CBM 1.7 has some really really weird changes to it like agartha getting a free darkness casting with 20 PD. The no hammers also really needs a higher magic site setting to compensate for it. Blood nations also suffer badly from removal of sanguine dowsing rods which cuts into their slave income.

EDM by itself would be fine although I do really like the no gemgen's in CBM

edit:

EDM is essentially this, just a few more summons in various schools.

January 6th, 2011, 09:03 AM
For me to play vanilla or CBM+EDM is both ok. But i think also it depends on the people joining this game: very new players may havent collected experience with the CBM and thus it would be very unfair against them as the changes between vanilla and CBM are quite huge.

As stated before for me personally, vanilla or CBM+EDM is both ok but if the decision is made towards CBM i would vote for 1.6.

Saros
January 6th, 2011, 10:24 AM
I'm not too fussed to be honest although I do think EDM would be cool even with Vanilla just to diversify things a bit. Tartarians as the only viable non-unique SC is kinda dull. Also I wanna summon a Balrog Ember lord.

Okay, a vanilla free-for-all it is! Are we banning Ashdod? If not then I will take them. Otherwise, I will take Ermor.

Thanks, earwicker!

I know very little about which nations should be banned... can anyone come up with any reasons for banning anyone?

Bumping this to try to keep it at the top... only two more people and we're ready to go! If, for some reason, no more people come, we could probably swing eight players, but let's give it a little more time.

Better we should gang up on Ashdod. :p

There's no one kinder than the giants of Ashdod. We're like big fluffy sheep. We mill around making soft bleating noises and never bother anyone.

Pythium, though.... they have lots of nasty mages who mindhunt and soulslay. Bad for everyone.

Anything negative you have heard about Ashdod is just propaganda.

Hopefully we can get a couple of more people. :) I personally would prefer a smaller map if we will only have eight players. (Maybe Pargonos or Land of Ethereal Squirrels?)

I'd have absolutely no reservations of letting Numahr join any game I admin or play in in the future. He did indeed stale once, I can't even remember the reason, but I do remember it being very reasonable. Apart from that the couple of extension request for business trips and the like were nicely on time so I could plan things in advance, and he was accomodating in trying to play his turns early right before leaving and/or late right after returning to keep the game running smoothly. Also volunteered to assign starting locations on the map for the game start, and active in the game thread, so as far as 64 turns can tell I'd call him an exemplary player.

So, does that earn me the promised crate of beer Numahr?

If you want peace it is critical that you RESPOND.

Arcoscephale does not like musing in the dark, holding secrets and knowledge from others. Rather, we prefer to keep our neighbors and allies lit with knowledge and information

For this reason, Arcoscephale presents its latest work. A map of the known world! (Note: Flags do not signify capital)

In addition, some mumblings from the astrologers atop the highest mountains.

"Our scouts report that our expansion parties are finished. There is nowhere that remains to expand and we are beginning to feel the vice around us that is the nation of Bandar Log. Whom have cut us off from the entire unclaimed west and will certainly claim the port before us. As well the nation of T'ien'Chi that resides to our east and appears to have raced to keep us from riding to their position. We can only hope that the ones that lay to their east can lay waste and show them that focusing entirely on one cardinal sector was a poor idea. We are actively seeking who they are through many scouts so we may send messengers to work out deals should T'ien'Chi get greedy. Less so do we wish to know the owners of the northern realm. However if we can convince them from allowing Bandar to expand northernly it would only be a benefit to us"

"Furthermore, independant hostilites and power have raised. The remaining provinces that have yet to be annexed into the glory that is Arcoscephale are full of heavily armed knights or our own beasts of burden! Surely T'ien'Chi will claim the secondary port before we are able to crack the lands that harbour the elephants lest we disturb our mages. Perhaps we should seek those that live in the North East and ask them to set up a barricade."

"Economically and magically we grow. Our researchers and military increase each month and we've managed to attain many fertile lands. One stinks of death however and the population seems to be falling from no discenable cause. Our dominion fights with that of Bandar. We've yet to see a candle from T'ien'Chi. Within months we shall begin finding sites of magical power. Lucky we are, as we have found many gems through sheer luck without a single site found. Perhaps we shall use them to launch a surprise invasion on the independant lands bellow Bandar. They don't seem to care about them and have made no advance upon them. Why not teleport in our astrologers and mentally burn those that would oppose us there? Land is land after all..."

Sigh barbarian invasion next to my cap. Its not like I needed those resources or anything.

I think my favorite experience with absurd rolls on the RNG would be the time I was playing kailasa and sent 20 yaksha sacreds with a yaksha commander to take an indie province with 20 or so infantry and 6 archers. I was running a strong air bless (70% airshield) and that was the first thing I put up. Turn two a single arrow is fired that avoids the airshield and hits my commander for 6hp damage (out of 28). It then proceeds to give him the battle fright affliction and he promptly fails a morale check and runs away with the whole force =/

Agarthan mythology long predicted that from the Mountain Deeps, a new Force would rise, able to defeat Death itself, and that it would bring a new life to the crumbling, abandonned Halls.

I guess that Ermor was a bit too curious, and has just checked and confirmed the reality of the prophecy. :)

Edit: one of my other games just had an issue with the Llamaserver hosting too early. Result: a few stales. I think that may have been what happened with my stale turn. Beware to all wise Lords of this World.

The wild nations of Ermor and Vanheim have, in their infamy and jealousy, launched a vicious and coordinated attack to capture the Halls of the Oracles of Agartha and rape as many Pale Ones as they can. Our Golems will oppose a strong resistance to the barbarians. But we ask any civilized nation with a wish to maintain a reasonable balance of power (especially towards the already dominating Vanheim), to join us in the war ASAP.

We are purchasing more Earth gems, by the way.

Zend Kuh

The word co-ordinated implies a level of sophistication and competence to which I can only aspire :-) For the most part, I just plan to pour hordes of undead across the border until Zend Kuh and his Argathans get sick and tired of killing them and give up in disgust.

The nature of the disagreement between Ermor and Agartha can be summarised thus:

Ermor demanded Southern Agartha for the purposes of raising vast numbers of undead, as well as building a disneyland style theme park devoted to the joys of necromantically enhanced lifestyles.
Agartha politely declined, as Zend Kuh preferred to keep what was his rather than hand over territory to his greedy southern neighbor
Ermor attacked, which ended in dismal failure and frustration.
Not being overly bright, Ermor has now attacked again. Expect more spanking and general murder and mayhem to follow.

At this point, it is perhaps worth noting that key motivational motto of Democratic Centralist, First Consul of Ermor, is "if at first you don't succeed, raise more waves of undead and try it again."

jimbojones1971
January 27th, 2011, 02:02 AM
The first consul of Ermor, Democratic Centralist, is proud to announce the opening of our new theme park "Zombieland" in the territory formerly known as Southern Agartha.

"Zombieland" offers fun package deals for all the family! Bring your kids. Bring your wife. And above all, be sure to bring enough body-bags for everybody (or alternatively pick some themed ones up, signed by Democratic Centralist himself, at our amusement park shop - just next to the ticket stall as you enter).

We would like to extend our grateful thanks to Lord Zend Kuh for making all this possible, in particular for contributing the first batch of fresh bodies to kick start our "wheel of death" attraction.

I'm flexible with turn limits. Basically, when one of the players feels a need to increase the turn length, I reckon we ought to do it.

Due to a battle being on my side rather than his side I've got to wait a turn now before I can attack again. I should have been seiging one of his forts next turn, but that wont even be happening for 2 more now due to the DRN hating me. (Why did it even pick my side? 60 vs 150, derp lets have it on 150s side! It's like when you sent five units at me and it had the battle on my side when I sent out my entire 60+ army) DRN hates me this game.

I misscripted one of my communion masters with communion slave by accident which means my eight slaves didn't get reinvigoration. They fatigued out at turn 4 and I lost the battle along with 2 of them.

Basically this turn was a cluster ****. Next turn ain't looking much better either since it'll just be me waiting.

Korwin did a pretty good job on me (Sauromantia rampaging through the wilds of Hinnom) in my first game.

Learning from that experience, I am having even more fun as Ashdod in an all nations, all eras game. Its amazing how nice it feels to torch your tormentors temples and then run away as they chase you. :nana:

I lost 16 mages and 100 hoplites in the turn. He's sieging one of my forts too. And your cap ain't under siege anymore. Well, it is, but its just a scout lol. My mages on your side are cornered. If both of you just keep pushing a bit I'm sure you've got me haha.

I still can't believe T'ien'chi went about this the way he did... I mean... Assaulting Arco with traditional armies (90% archers at that!!!). That's insane, its expected I'd have had elephants which would slaughter them and would just trample. I expected his expectation that he didn't have and wen't anti-mage/general army.

Lesson learned. Just mass elephants in the beginning and slowly transition into mages. This game has been a huge boon to my learning that not everyone thinks about elephants from the start.

Massed archers are generally considered a far better counter to elephants than infantry as they all get to attack and elephants go down pretty quick with enough set on fire monsters. Armored hopolites on the other hand are almost missile immune thanks to shield + high prot.
Generally I find you want a squad of elephants (maybe a dozen) then the rest it more conventional units. That means the opponents is forced to counter the elephants at the expense of being able to fight your infantry.
Also don't forget the trick of putting hypnatists into elephant squads to boost their morale.

In other news it turns out I have to go away for four days (8th to 12th.) I will take a portable install and will do my best to get turns in but I don't know exactly if/when I will be able to.

Alright guys something big just occured in my life and I wont be able to continue this game. I'm terribly sorry but I've got to drop out as I no-longer have the time (and possibly the ability to access) for the game

I'll try to find a sub as quickly as I can.

Dude, discovering your true sexual orientation is NOT a reason to skip out on Dominions! ;)

Congrats on whatever it is.

Not really a lucky thing. I've decided to take a bit of a push in my life and have finalized my choice to enlist in the US Army. I'd been thinking about it for a while and have finally brought myself to do it. Being unemployed for almost a year and having almost no money helps make that push haha. Aparently a college degree doesn't make me qualified to even wash dishes or flip burgers in a common setting. Who'd have guessed?

I'm taking the ASVAB tomorrow. Going to try to get a nice high score so I can qualify for and enroll as a desk jockey somewhere over-seas and not get shot at.

As much i support the idea of getting a job/push ones life i was always suspicious towards the army. I would always try to find something else then join there....but its my personal opinion for you its maybe really the right thing to do.

Well then good luck! See you over-sea!

So what are our plans for finding a sub? I reckon we should put the game on hold until we find someone (or set the country to AI maybe?).

I posted a topic (Subs needed for three games!) that covers for all three. If interested you can go ahead and bump it. I should still be able to get in one or two more turns before if we can't find a sub quickly

As the initial intention was to have a game with players with a record of no staling....should a potential sub fullfill this requirement as well? Complicated i know....but for my experience subbed nations tend to be left more frequently (atlantis of Last Rites already has its 3rd or 4th player...)

Is llamaserver having issues again? I sent in my turn an hour ago, but it's not showing, and the last time it was updated was about six hours ago.

If we have the choice between two candidates, we should take the one with better history.
Since I dont think, we get that choise... Lets take whoever we can get ;)

Weird... unless I did a delayed hosting order while sleepwalking, and it somehow never went through until a few minutes ago, llamaserver just kicked back the turn by 16 hours. Agartha, do you need the extra time?

I wont be able to get to the turn today and would advise possibly extending it a day while a sub is still trying to be found. If I can't find one I'll have no real choice but to switch to AI which would give T'ien'chi a huge boon and possibly bring Bandar back into the game.

So, how goes the world for all the other nations in the game?

I am pleased to note that Ermor is experiencing an economic and cultural renaissance, fuelled by a surplus of undead labour.

War is a-brewin' with Marignon. It got to the point where I had to either turtle or expand, so I had to break our peace (with five turns notice, of course... I respect my treaties).

If anyone happens to be on their flank, now would be a good time to attack them.

With all that witch burning and suchlike, Marignon is clearly the main cause of global warming in this game. Taken together with their refusal to use an acceptable renewable source of energy (e.g. vast hordes of undead) despite the example of some of their neighbors, and we have no choice but to declare our interest in helping to horribly murder them. In a spirit of friendship and cooperation, of course - it is clearly in the long term best interest of the people of Marignon to be stabbed to death and then raised again as zombies.

Hey I am away for two days and will likely need an extension to make sure I don't miss a turn. I just sent in this turn and if the timer is 48h like I think I should be fine with just a 24h extension, hopefully I will get back in time but I don't want to stale out if I don't.

Well, if fighting Agartha's main army was like a near death experience involving getting kicked in the teeth by an angry horse and then run over by a tractor, fighting Marignon's turned out to be more like getting gently spanked with a wet lettuce by an elderly matron whilst drinking tea and discussing the weather.

As a consequence, I think it is fair to say that the unjust invasion of peace loving Ermor by the brutal witch burning bigots of Marignon has been successfully repulsed. Now for the counter attack! And possibly some more tea and wet lettuce. Mmmmm, lettuce.

(If I get time, I will post an account of the actual battle.)

Well, that was an interesting three months. My predecessor was involved in a two-front war -.- But the great nation of Arcoscephale is no stranger to in-fighting! We shall soon be victorious against those ascetic (or is it asiatic?) monkeys! But towards the barbarous empire of the east, perhaps we can work out a deal...

Or maybe not. I mean, really, five elements?! There's obviously only four! Well, unless you count the ether...

I'll return once I consult with my sages. It's tough being a philosopher-king.

Since Saros asked for a 24 hour extension, and my daughter just informed me that she needs my help on a project that is due tomorrow (she conveniently "didn't remember about it" until around the time I was going to start playing), I'm just going to delay this turn by 24 hours, because I probably won't be able to finish it until sometime tomorrow. If for some reason I am able to finish early, I'll go ahead and delay the next turn instead... does that work for you, Saros?
