Hi everyone,

I recently discovered the exciting world of Dominions 3. It was a good surprise to see that Linux is supported so I downloaded the demo and gave it a go. The demo installed perfectly and also started up but there's no music/sound whatsoever. I've been trying commandline switches --oss, --arts but to no avail. The game starts and runs well, music is checked in the options menu but I don't hear anything. Anyone have a clue? I'm running Lubuntu (Ubuntu 10.10 with Lxde).

Cheers & thanks!

The demo has never been updated and is quite old, that's why it doesn't have support for pulseaudio that Ubuntu uses. The full patched game has pulseaudio support and would probably work.

You should be able to get the OSS sound of the demo to work with pulseaudio though. Maybe you can try using padsp, like this:

padsp ./dom3 --oss

Dear Johan K,

First of all, thanks for the quick reply! I have installed the pulseaudio-utilities package and tried the command you suggested but to no avail. The game starts but with no sound whatsoever. It's a pity and I'm reluctant to spend 60 bucks on something I'm not 100% sure it'll work or not. Hopefully someone on this forum had a similar experience and was able to solve it.

cheers and best regards,

IMHO:

#1: Dom 3's music needs switching off after 5 minutes. You are not missing anything.

#2: You'll either really love the game or you won't. Sound won't be an issue. Try the demo.

Im afraid that I dont have a specific answer. I only run the linux version in text mode for hosting purposes.

But Im sure you can count on it not being a big problem with the purchased version.
The reason I think so is that:
A) its not a "linux supported" game. Its a Linux game. Windows and Mac are "supported" (ported to) from the Linux version
B) Its developed on Ubuntu
C) Johan K. is the guy who develops it

What kind of other applications on your system are using sound now?
