No. Not unless it is a defend/delay of course, or a shotgun meeter - then it is obvious from the V-hexes. But not so if it is a meeter with all neutral. Usually, you get to know which side of the map is yours by experience.

In most, but not all cases the actual geographical location of the opponents in relation to one another determines which side is left and right. Germany fights Russia, German on the left side. Germany fights France, Germany on the right side.

And as Andy said, after a few games you learn by experience.

Usually it goes by geography but you never know when its two REALLY random countries fighting. The U.S. (and South America) will almost always be the left and countries like Japan will be on the right.
